Daley than the welfare of Chicago children. So it was with happiness that the Mayor officiated at various pool dedications in Chicago neighborhoods when nine new pools were opened this summer. Supt. James B. Conlisk, Jr. also attended many of the pool dedications There are over 20 swimming pools available for use during the summer months. Activity at the pools is supervised and lifeguards are on duty. Many pools were the scene of special events this summer. For example, the pool right next to the 13th (Wood St.) District station was the setting for a water festival complete with competitive swimming, a band and refreshments. Mayor Richard J. Daley was on hand this summer to dedicate a new swimming pool in the 9th District at 35th and Lowe Street,
DID YOU KNOW that it takes: • Two pints of blood to produce one double unit of cryoprecipitate; • Five pints of blood to produce one unit (bottle) of Cortland concentrate; and • Five pints of blood to produce one unit (bottle) of Hyland concentrate? Each blood concentrate unit costs from $21 to $30. The above set of facts about blood concentrates and their costs probably does not affect or even interest most people or most police officers like you. But it does affect Sgt. Robert Faust, administrative assistant to the Chief of Traffic, and his family. The Fausts have two children: a girl, Suzanne, 8; and a boy, Bobby, 12. Bobby is a hemophiliac. That means he can roll over in his sleep and start bleeding and it won't stop. A cut, a scratch, a good bump on the arm can start a flow of blood that can't be stopped without an immediate transfusion to make the blood clot. If Bobby goes for two weeks without a transfusion, the family counts itself lucky. However, he could run into problems and need daily transfusions for up to 30 days or more. An average transfusion takes: • Three double units of cryo-precipitate, or • Three bottles of Cortland concentrate, or • Three bottles of Hyland concentrate (Repeated hemorrhages within the same joints such as knee, ankle or elbow require double the above amounts.) You don't have to be an accountant or use a computer to see that the Faust family medical bills must be high. Not that they haven't received help in the last 11 years, for they have. Ever since they discovered Bobby was a hemophiliac when he was nine months old, they have been continually asking anyone who's healthy-family, friends, neighbors, parishioners-to donate blood for their son since they must replace all the blood he uses. Members of St. Pascal's parish, of which they are members, have held five donor sessions for the Fausts in the A PLEA FOR BLOOD past seven years. The Chicago Police Department sponsored a donor session in November, 1968 at which Faust collected 132 pints of blood. Since then, Faust estimates they have used over $10,000 worth of blood. Bobby, a bright seventh-grader at St. Pascal's, has missed very little school. He is hospitalized on the average about three or four times a year. Frequently he must use crutches due to numerous knee and ankle hemorrhages which make his joints swell. Since his mother is able to give him transfusions as needed at home, his school attendance is fairly stable. He missed only about a month last year. When he does miss, the school cooperates by sending his work home to him. There has been great progress in the treatment of hemophilia. Years ago, a transfusion was pumped in, drop by drop. Now a syringe injection of a concentrate takes about 60 seconds. Adult hemophiliacs are able to treat themselves much as diabetics do. But the older Bobby gets, his increased weight and increased physical activity require more injections to increase the clotting ability of his blood. Although Faust belongs to the blood donor plans of both the Department and the Chicago Patrolman's Association, Bobby is not eligible for blood through them, due to his disease. Faust himself gives a pint of blood a month for Bobby. It is a long, hard struggle. The Fausts have received help. "Thank God for the parish and the Police Department," said Sgt. Faust. But they still need more blood-continually, inexorably, as the days and weeks and months pass by. It is really very simple. Bobby needs blood to live. You can help the Fausts help Bobby live an "almost normal" life by giving just a pint of your blood. The Chicago Police Department is going to sponsor another blood drive for Bobby in October.
