ZONdErVAN EXEGETICAL COMMENTArY ON THE NEW TESTAMENT
James
CrAIG L. BLOMBErG ANd MArIAM J. KAMELL
CLINTON E. ArNOLd, GENErAL EdITOr
In this first volume of the ZECNT series, Craig L. Blomberg and Mariam J.
Kamell introduce readers to three key themes that dominate the letter: (1) trials
and temptations; (2) wisdom and speech, particularly with a view to obedience;
and (3) wealth and poverty. Tying these together, however, is the motif of singlemindedness,
a trait God consistently displays and one that therefore his people
should increasingly display. Readers may be surprised to see how the famous
passage on faith versus works actually emerges from the more central topic of
wealth and poverty.
Craig l. blomberg (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is distinguished professor
of New Testament at Denver Seminary. He is the author of seventeen books and
more than eighty articles in journals of multivolume works.
mariam J. Kamell is a PhD candidate in New Testament at the University of
St. Andrews under the direction of Richard Bauckham and Grant Macaskill. Her
dissertation focuses on soteriology in James and its relationship to earlier Jewish
wisdom literature.
GrANT r. OSBOrNE
CLINTON E. ArNOLd, GENErAL EdITOr
This second volume in the ZECNT series will help teachers, preachers, and
students proclaim the truths of Matthew to the church and our world. Written by
Grant Osborne, an accomplished Bible commentator known for his careful work
in hermeneutics, each unit begins with an exegetical outline and structural analysis,
noting that unit’s place in the developing story that Matthew communicates.
Consideration is also given to the style by which Matthew tells the story (inclusion,
repetition, symbolic language, irony, antitheses, etc.) to ascertain the way
he has colored the narrative. Exegesis details both syntax and history to unlock
the deep meaning of a passage. A standard feature in ZECNT commentaries, the
Theology in Application section presents aspects of Matthean theology in each
passage and develops the contextualization, helping build the bridge to carry the
message of Matthew for his day to our own.
grant r. osborne (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is professor of New
Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. His areas
of expertise include the Gospels, hermeneutics, and the book of Revelation. His
numerous publications include The Hermeneutical Spiral and commentaries on
Revelation, Romans, John, and Matthew.
