Outreach Sponsors Needed
We appeal to the community to help sponsor The Shul’s outreach
efforts. We will be distributing 600 Chanukah packages to
hospitals, nursing homes and private families in advance of
Chanukah. The kits come with candles, a menorah, dreidls and
chocolate gelt. True costs are $2,870 total. Any amount of
sponsorship will help offset our costs. The families love receiving
this from The Shul and we appreciate the participation of our
community members in helping fulfill this mitzvah and helping
to light up the world!
Appeal: Help Mend a Heart
Our Mom, Maureen Waters, Malka bas Chava, is fighting for
her life. On Friday, November 27th, she was rushed to
Broward General Medical Center CVICU due to a sudden,
unidentified infection which has severely weakened her
heart. She is in critical condition with only 10% of her heart
working on it's own. Maureen is a firm believer in prayer and
asked us to tell everyone we know to pray for her. She needs
a tidal wave of SUPPORT, in any way, shape or form. Time is
extremely sensitive and every minute that goes by, she is
fighting. Please share this website www.mendaheart.com
with everyone you know and help us mend our mother's
heart. You never think it could happen to you, but it's
happening to us right now.
Tina Myerson, who is a very close friend of Maureen’s sister,
forwarded this message to The Shul.
Letters to The Shul
Mr. Abe Stein shares his memories of December 7,
1941 and the historic attack on Pearl Harbor:
With a War going on in Europe and Hitler taking over country
after country, there was talk about having a Draft. I was living
in Florida. Instead of waiting to be drafted, I decided to join
the U.S Army which I did in Miami during November 1940. The
recruiting Sergeant asked me what interests I had and I told
him that I was interested in Medicine. He assigned me to the
U.S. Army Medical Dept. Asked where I wanted to go, I saw a
huge sign showing Hawaii and pointed to it, and that is where
I ended up in January 1941.
I was assigned to the Schofield Barracks Station Hospital. We
had 11 months of peace.
On December 6th I worked till midnight. I was fast asleep
when my bed started to shake. Without opening my eyes I
said, “Don't bother me! I am off today!" Then it shook again
and I was ready to bop someone when I saw that all of the
soldiers were running out to the balcony. The clock showed
7:55AM and it was December 7th 1941. I also ran out onto the
balcony and saw the planes coming in. We did not see the red
circles and thought they were our planes. I asked, “Why are
they doing maneuvers on Sunday? Why are they using live
bullets? Our guys are falling left and right!!”
An announcement over the loud speaker commanded all
soldiers off duty to report to the Hospital. I do not remember
if I was helping in the Emergency room or the Operating room
when we asked the Colonel (the Doctor) why he was cursing
and he said, "The Japanese just bombed the H- - L out of us".
Tears started to flow, we thought that would be the end of our
lives.
The Japanese planes destroyed The Wheeler Air Base that was
attached to our Army Base. One of our pilots did get off the
ground and was shot down by the enemy planes and I went
out with the ambulance to get him. He was still alive but badly
wounded. The Japanese planes destroyed all of the Air Bases
and then went to the naval base called Pearl Harbour and
destroyed many of our battleships.
I will stop here as I do not want to use up all of the pages in
our weekly magazine.
Now you know why December 7th is very important to me.
Hopefully one day I will be able to share my story of "Landing
on The Beach in Normandy."
Thank you for letting the Old Soldier give you a little History.
