. Time Activity Activity 1.2: Risk Continuum Section 1: What is HIV and AIDS? Activity Outline Objective: At the end of the activity, the participants know modes of HIV transmission. Duration/Timing: 35 minutes Materials/Resources: Annex 4 PowerPoint presentation or pictures depicting activities, 3 signs with high-risk, low-risk and no-risk. (You can also use the information below to make your own PPT). 5 minutes Split the group into 3 smaller groups and give each group a sign (high risk, low risk, no risk). 30 minutes 1. Introduce activity. When you show each picture, give groups a minute to decide whether the activity is high risk, low risk or no risk of transmission. 2. Call time. Ask groups to shout out the answer. If there are two answers being given, ask participants to explain. Correct any myths or incorrect information. 3. Explain to the group that behaviour change is very complex. It is not just about eliminating risk but reducing risk too. For example, reducing the number of sexual partners you have. If you have multiple concurrent partners, you are at greater risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, which puts you at risk of HIV infection. 20
Sexual Activities and HIV risk No risk of HIV Low risk of HIV High risk of HIV Description: These are sexual activities with no risk of HIV transmission because the activities do not involve semen, vaginal fluid and blood in any way. Examples include: Massage Hugging Masturbating yourself Body-to-body rubbing (not involving the genitals) Talking sexy Sexy dancing Sharing sexual fantasies Body kissing Washing together Using sex toys without sharing them Description: These are sexual activities which involve semen, vaginal fluids or blood but people take care to prevent any of these fluids from getting onto the thin, wet or broken skin of another person. These activities not 100% risk free because condoms can break, there may be breaks in the skin and people may not manage to completely avoid getting fluid onto the genitals. Examples include: Masturbating each other (cover cuts on hands and wash after playing before you touch your own genitals). Open mouth kissing (do not do this if either of you have bleeding gums and or sores in the mouth). Vaginal intercourse with a condom. Anal intercourse with a condom and water-based lubricant. Oral sex is kissing or licking each other’s genitals.
