THE fish friers REVIEW 4 News National Fish & Chip Awards 2012: Latest finalist announcements Several more category finalists have been announced since the last issue of the Fish Friers Review. Independent Takeaway Fish & Chip Shop Ten of the UK’s best fish and chip shops are celebrating making it through to the final of this year’s National Fish & Chip Awards 2012 after being named the Independent Takeaway Fish & Chip Shop of the Year in their respective regions. The final 10 places were hard earned after an unannounced visit from industry judges. Shops were assessed on a wide variety of judging criteria including; product quality, customer service, food preparation procedures, hygiene, innovation, staff training and development, promotional activity and approaches to sustainable sourcing. The national finalists are: Scotland: The Bay, Stonehaven Wales: Crispy Cod, Mid Glamorgan Northern Ireland: Pit Stop, Kilkeel North East: Quayside, Whitby, North Yorkshire North West: Seniors, Thornton, Lancashire Midlands: The Big Fish, Stratford Upon Avon Eastern: Linfords, Market Deeping London & South East: Seafare, Guildford Central & South: Wigmore Fish & Chips, Luton South West: Hanbury’s, Babbacombe Young Fish Frier of the Year The judging has now been completed to reveal the 5 Young Friers who have made it through to the final of this year’s Young Fish Frier of the Year competition, sponsored by Drywite and NFFF. Following shop visits by the competition judges, the final 5, in alphabetical order are as follows Carlyn Johnson, Frankies Fish and Chips, Shetland Cori Standing, Fish and Chips @ 149, Bridlington Dean Chappelhow, Angel Lane Chippie, Penrith Sean Lloyd, Richardson’s Fish Bar, Fleetwood Zohaib Hussain, Zero Plus Fish Bar, Cardiff Impressed with the high standard, competition judge and NFFF vice-president Mark Drummond commented, "This year’s competition has been one of the closest ever, with an exceptionally high standard making it a very close call to judge." For exclusive interviews with the 5 finalists see pg 28 or visit www.youngfriers.com New £50 note now in circulation You may be aware from recent media coverage that the Bank of England introduced a new-style £50 note in to circulation on 2 November 2011. The key points are: The new-style £50 note featuring Matthew Boulton & James Watt entered circulation on Wednesday 2 November 2011. From 2 November 2011 the new-style £50 note will co-circulate with the current £50 note, featuring Sir John Houblon, until further notice. Multiple Fish & Chip operator Issue 8 December 2011 Finalists for the Best Multiple Fish & Chip Operator Award category have been announced after being judged on standards in business, retail and commitment to customer service. Fish’n’Chick’n of England The Frying Squad of Northern Ireland The Ashvale Restaurant of Scotland Sponsored by Unique Seafood Limited, the event is open to multiple fish and chip retailers with four or more outlets and judges businesses at both head office and store level, taking into account the standard of sustainability, commercial awareness and staff training levels. Nikki Hawkins, foodservice and events manager at Seafish, said: “The UK’s fish and chip shops are a national institution and this network of national retailers have been recognised for their highly professional attitude to business expansion and the quality of their staff, setting a great example across the industry.” Richard Corrigan announced as 2012 host Three times winner of the Great British Menu, Richard Corrigan has been unveiled as the face of the National Fish & Chip Awards 2012. The celebrated chef, who has recently appeared on screens on Channel 4’s Cookery School, will host the ceremony in January in London. He will also help publicise the event throughout the UK.
