herein prejudices the right of the governors, the headteacher or the
PART 1: SCHOOL PROSPECTUS:
Why this school?
Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important responsibilities for
a parent/carer. Although this prospectus can not possibly convey the full atmosphere of
care, excitement for learning and excellence that we foster, hopefully you will find the
information that you need to help you to make that choice.
Reception children taking part in
the ‘Experience Easter’ project.
We are proud of our reputation as a friendly,
caring school, with high expectations of both
achievement and behaviour. This spirit is fostered
through the relationship between home, church
and school and we strive to promote the values of
our Christian faith throughout daily life. Visitors
to the school comment on the happy learning
environment and sense of purpose and
commitment demonstrated by staff and pupils.
The ethos of the school and the standard of
learning and teaching are extremely important
to us and are given high priority in our
management decisions.
Whilst focusing on high standards of attainment, we
are fully committed to the provision of a broad and balanced curriculum, offering a wide
range of opportunities and using both tried and tested and creative methods of learning
and teaching. We pride ourselves on our capability to provide opportunities for individual
children, taking personal learning styles into account. The strong partnerships between
governors, staff, children, parents, our churches and the local community contribute to
the achievements, the facilities and the forward thinking approach of the school
Bowdon Church School is one of the highest performing primary schools nationally but the
success of our pupils in national tests and as they move on to secondary schools presents
only a narrow view of the experiences offered here. We are equally proud of our fully
inclusive approach to children with special needs, of the numbers of children opting to be
involved in sport, the creative and performing arts, our work in the community and our
promotion of a healthy way of life.
In order to fully appreciate the standards and the opportunities offered by a Primary
Education at Bowdon Church School, the staff and governors warmly invite all prospective
parents to visit us and see the school in action for themselves. To arrange a visit, please
telephone the school office on 0161 928 8907.
Historical Background
Originally founded in 1533 to be “a grammar school
for the education of the poor of Bowdon” on a
site in Richmond Road, the school was rebuilt in
1670 with further additions in 1806. It was
replaced in November 1969 by the existing
purpose-built school on a green-field site in Grange
Road, financed jointly by the Local Education
Authority and St Mary’s Parish Church, Bowdon. In
2003 a number of events took place to celebrate
the school’s 450 th anniversary.
Our Vision
The aim of Bowdon Church of England Primary
School is to provide, “the opportunity for all
children to achieve their full potential in a caring and secure Christian atmosphere”.
In order to achieve this we work with parents/carers and children’s services to support
the Every Child Matters outcomes of: Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a
Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well-Being. Using the security of our
Christian faith we intend to promote an ethos of caring for ourselves, caring for one
another and caring for our world.
Our vision is to provide an inclusive, stimulating environment for learning, with strong
links with our churches and at the centre of the community. We will use a creative
approach to present a wide and balanced curriculum full of opportunity and excitement.
We offer high quality of learning and teaching, high standards of safety and behaviour, a
wide ranging programme of extra-curricular activities and the opportunity for every
child to be regarded as unique. In addition to a mastery of key skills every child will
experience the comfort of knowledge of the Christian Faith and values, along with an
understanding and respect for those of others. Our responsibility to the community
involves provision for activities involving all, as well as the sharing of good practice and
facilities and the development of national and international links.
Curriculum:
The Primary Curriculum is recently undergone several changes and for the first time in
many years, the school has the opportunity to design a curriculum specifically tailored
for our children, and this local community, this includes learning specific skills used in
secondary school entrance tests. Whilst placing emphasis on the core skills of Literacy
(English), Numeracy (Maths) and ICT; the skills of independent learning, investigation
and technical capability are nurtured to enhance knowledge. The school uses a creative,
cross curricular approach to thoroughly prepare the pupils for their transition to
Secondary School and to stimulate an enthusiasm for learning.
The curriculum is grouped into subjects, including Religious Education. ICT, Building
Towards a Sustainable Future and Life Skills; these are incorporated into the planning
for each topic. The development of the
school’s Modern Foreign Language
provision and our links with schools in this
country and around the world are also
given priority. Currently either French or
Spanish are taught weekly (depending
upon which year group your child is in),
with taster sessions in other languages
and a German club for Y6 children. The
school has recently attained the full
International School Award, a real
achievement.
In addition to a rich and exciting cycle of
cross-curricular topics in each year group,
throughout the year the school undertakes
Experiencing a French Café
during ‘International Day’
whole school topics lasting a day or a week. This enables us to have a very creative
approach and to facilitate the social mixing of different age groups. The learning taking
place during these sessions is outstanding and it is a highly stimulating environment for
all ages. Examples of whole school topics are: an International Day, Art Days, Science
Days, Sports Week and Creative Weeks. Each year group also enhances their learning
with a wide range of visits and visitors.
Implementing the School Curriculum
The Governors’ Learning, Teaching and School Development Committee meets termly to
ensure that each area of learning has a current policy, that all aspects of the New
Primary Curriculum are included and that the school is progressing towards the aims of
the School Development Plan. A team of teachers and teaching assistants operate each
area of learning and review teachers’ plans to ensure that coverage of essential skills and
knowledge is thorough and that creative learning methods are being used.
Bowdon Church School Prospectus 2012/13 Page 3
Organisation:
There are 440 children in the school organised into 15 classes (6 infant, 9 junior). Each
new year group of 60 is divided into two classes (there are currently three classes in
Year 5). The two teachers plan together and ensure that both classes follow the same
exciting curriculum during the year. Within each class children are placed in groups
according to their ability for certain subjects and in mixed ability groups for others.
and stimulating learning and teaching aid.
All classes are connected to a
computer network with tightly
controlled internet and email
access, using a purpose built
ICT Suite and two mobile
laptop suites. The school also
links into to virtual learning
opportunities for the pupils to
access from hom. All
classrooms are fitted with
interactive whiteboards which
are invaluable as an exciting
Assessment and Reporting to Parents
All children are regularly assessed by the class teacher who sets individual targets for
them. From the moment that they enter the school their progress is tracked and
reported to the Senior Management Team. The gifted and talented, highly able and
children who may need more challenge or support are identified and individual
programmes created for them. If children are not making satisfactory progress they
may be identified for extra help, either in small groups or individually. Children with
suspected learning difficulties will be assessed either by the Special Needs Leader or by
professionals from the Local Authority. Parents are kept informed about their child’s
progress with a written annual report, at parents’ evenings twice a year and other
informal meetings as requested by parents/carers or the class teacher. Parents are
encouraged to talk to the class teacher if they have any concerns. At ages 7 and 11 all
children currently take part in national tests (SATs) which assess their progress against
local and national averages. Aspects of this system are under review and are to be
replaced by standardised and moderated Teacher Assessment.
The staff and governors of the school are constantly checking that the education
provided for the children is broad, balanced and relevant to their needs. It is equally
important that the learning environment is stimulating and expectations of performance
and behaviour are high. As a part of the relationship between school/parents and the
children’s learning, homework is given where appropriate and the policy for this is
available from the website or the school office.
Homework
An emphasis on reading skills begins the
Infant homework, with spellings and maths
introduced and increased during Y1 and Y2.
All children are given a reading book to take
home and parents are encouraged to hear
their child read as often as possible and to
share other books at home.
The amount and range of homework will
increase as each child moves up the school.
Homework is set every week in the Juniors,
with spellings and times tables a vital part of this in the Lower Juniors. In the case of
written homework, parents are asked to encourage their child to take a pride in the
content and neatness of their work. Further details are included in the Homework Policy
on the school website.
Religious Affiliation
The school is a fully aided Church of England school with a
Trust Deed dated 1553 which states that the education
provided is to be according to the doctrines of the
Church of England. There is a collective act of worship
every day and all the children are taken to services held
in St Mary’s or St. Luke’s Churches during school hours on
special occasions. There is a school Carol Service, Harvest
Festival and an Easter Service held at St. Mary’s.
However, as a local community school we recognise that
some of our families have other faith backgrounds and
they are therefore not expected to pray in a Christian
Church, should they prefer not to. All pupils attend
assemblies and the content is relevant to all main faiths,
it includes values and moral behaviour. Pupils receive
much of the information required for the running of a school
Experience Easter at
during assemblies and we prefer the children to attend, however, pupils may be withdrawn
if it is thought appropriate. Children may also be withdrawn from RE lessons if
appropriate, after discussion with the class teacher.
Sex Education
The governors have decided that the school should offer a programme of sex education
“appropriate to the age and knowledge of the pupils, and which will be presented within a
moral, family-orientated and Christian framework”. This will be included in an overall
programme of health education within Science and PHSE and not taught as a separate
subject. Parents may see the teaching materials for themselves if they wish to do so.
Performing Arts
We are very proud of the high standard of music and performing arts at the school.
As well as singing and music making in class, there are opportunities for children to
receive private tuition from our peripatetic music teachers for cello, violin, guitar,
French Horn, Cornet, Trombone and Tenor Horn; many children reach an exceptional
standard.
Choir performance – ‘Sound of Music’
Sports
There is a programme of Physical
Education throughout the school that
ensures our children experience a range
of different sports and generally improve
their fitness and sporting ability. The
school has been award the Activemark
Advanced for an exceptional standard of
sports delivery. There are school teams
in a range of sports (recently this has
included football, netball, tag rugby,
athletics, Kwik cricket, hockey, cross
country running and lacrosse) which
Children may begin to play the recorder in year 3 and
continue in year 4. The Upper Juniors are encouraged
to join a recorder group. Also flourishing is choral
training with two choirs for Lower and Upper Juniors.
In addition to their school performances, the choirs
play a major part in our community involvement singing
for charity and community events – including
performances on BBC Radio 2, Piccadilly Radio and
BBC1.
Specialist dance and drama lessons are a part of the
school timetable and thriving Performing Arts Clubs
take place after school.
North West Pop Lacrosse Champions 2010
and on to the National Finals!
compete in various inter-school competitions and have been very successful in past years.
Year 3 pupils also have swimming lessons. Football, netball, hockey and lacrosse are
played during the winter months. Athletics, cross-country, rounders, tennis and Kwikcricket
are enjoyed in the summer. We employ specialist sports coaches to deliver one
hour of lessons for each class throughout the school each week, making use of the aquaturf
facilities at the Bowdon Club. All other PE and sports training is carried out by
school staff. Sports Days for all pupils are held in the summer term. All year 6 pupils
attend tennis lessons at a local club and throughout the year and groups visit a local
special school to support the pupils during PE lessons. The school provides a wide range
of extra curricular sporting activities, including netball, football, lacrosse, rugby, tri-
Special Educational Needs.
Children are taught according to their ability. However, if it is felt that any child has
special education needs, we follow the guidelines laid down in the Code of Practice on the
Identification and Assessment of Special Needs. Liaison with parents is always sought in
such cases and before a child is placed on the special needs
register. A full Special Educational Needs Policy is available
for inspection in school. The school employs 2 full time
Reception assistants and 16 other full and part time high
quality Teaching Assistants to support the special needs of the
children
Y5 Residential Activity Holiday
School Visits
Where appropriate, visits are made to places of educational
interest to support topic work. Voluntary financial
contributions are requested from parents to make this
possible. Year 6 children are taken to the Isle of Man for a
week every summer and Year 5 children spend part of a week
at an IT and outward bounds centre.
Charging for School Activities
The governors have agreed that it is appropriate to ask
parents for voluntary contributions to enable certain
activities to take place. However, no child will be
prevented from taking part, in situations where making a
contribution is difficult for the family. Some extracurricular
activities are provided by outside
organisations and for this a fee will be payable to the
organisation concerned.
Parental Links
Parents are encouraged to visit the school prior to their child’s admission. Following
admission, the headteacher and staff are available for consultation by appointment or
more informally if just a quick meeting is required. We strive to operate an open door
policy, despite the restrictions of Safeguarding. Ideally, if
parents/carers have an urgent problem they should telephone or
write for an immediate meeting. Regular consultation evenings
are held for the parents/carers of all children and year group
meetings are held to give information when required e.g.
Secondary Transition meeting. A Parent/Carer questionnaire is
sent out each year so that successes can be consolidated and
suggestions made for further development.
We aim to work with parents/carers as much as possible and
understand the common anxieties felt. If you have any
concerns, please contact us straight away. It is helpful for us to know if anything at
home may be unsettling your child; we can then offer advice and support or can just be
aware that the child may not be at their best.
Transition from Nursery
Meetings for Reception parents take place in June (before
they start) and in September/October for further
information about the settling in process and their day,
uniform, school dinners etc. The children follow a well
established settling in process. During the summer term
they visit three times, with increasing independence. For
the first three days of the autumn term the children
attend just on day, so that there are only ten children in
their class for that first key day and they can be given
plenty of attention.
All reception children are assessed throughout the
important Foundation Stage. Parental input is a vital and
welcome part of this process and parents/carers receive
detailed feedback on their child’s assessment.
Bowdon Church School Prospectus 2012/13 Page 8
Parental involvement
Similar meetings will take place with year 2 and 6 parents to explain how the National
Tests (SATs) will operate and with year 5 parents to discuss admission arrangements for
secondary schools. Other meetings will be held to discuss particular matters with parents
as and when they are needed. The headteacher holds an annual meeting of the Parents’
Forum where issues can be raised and contributions to the vision and strategic planning of
the school can be made.
Parents are always welcome at school productions and at special festivals and services
held jointly with St. Mary’s Church. The school tries to involve parents in as many school
based events as possible. In addition to individual parents helping with school trips and
with activities in school, parent groups also run the toddler group on a Thursday morning,
a gardening club, enterprise projects and School Council projects.
School PTA
The school has an extremely active PTA who are involved in community events and
essential fund-raising activities for the school. Many parents/carers and members of
staff are involved in the various events and have a lot of fun in the process: Balls, fairs,
quiz night, treasure hunt, car boot sales, Good As New sales, themed evenings and they
play a vital role in our school community. Please see their website
www.bowdoncspta.org.uk for further details.
Governing Body
The Governing Body of the school is
drawn from committed volunteers in the
community. There are representatives
from the church, the diocese, the Local
Authority, staff and parents. The main
Governing Body meets three or four
times a year, holding committee
meetings for the various teams e.g.
finance, personnel, learning and
teaching, building – when required. The
Governing Body plays a vital part in the
running of the school.
Pupil Voice
The Senior Management Team and the Governing
Body value input form all stakeholders, including the
pupils and a Pupil Questionnaire is carried out each
year. The School Council makes suggestions and
feeds into the strategic planning of the school. They
also carry out surveys and assist us with the
introduction of new strategies. Each class from Y2
upwards has two representatives and the Council is
led by the Head and Deputy Head girl and boy, under
the supervision of a senior member of staff.
Y5 whole class trumpet lesson
Suggestion boxes in the classrooms give all children
the opportunity to feedback their ideas or concerns. The Eco-Club is also involved in
future planning and they aim to work to improve the
Sustainability of the school.
Complaints Procedure
Occasionally a parent may have a specific issue they wish
to discuss. A quiet word with a teacher, the headteacher
or the parent governor is usually all that is needed if a
problem arises concerning your child. It is nearly always
possible to find a solution without going through any
formal procedures. However, if parents feel that a problem has not been resolved that
way, they can ask for a more formal meeting with the headteacher or can write with their
complaint.
Parents have a formal right of complaint if they feel that a governing body or the Local
Education Authority is not fulfilling its duties with regard to the curriculum, religious
education or worship. Copies of a document giving details of the complaints procedure
are available from the Education Offices.
Safeguarding and Child Protection
The school will take any reasonable action to
ensure the safety of its pupils and our policy
follows the Trafford and national guidelines.
In cases where the school has reason to be
concerned that a child may be subject to ill
treatment, neglect or abuse, staff have no
alternative but to follow Trafford Area
Committees Guide - “Child in Need” and
inform the social services of their concern. A
Exciting Winter weather
Protection Policies are available to parents on
request. The school also has policies for antibullying
and behaviour.
Transfer to Secondary School
The school is committed to helping parents/carers to choose the school that will offer
the best approach for their child and we have links with a very wide range of schools in
Trafford, in other local authorities and in the independent sector. Children from the
school transfer and adjust extremely well to the secondary school system. The secondary
schools comment on how well prepared the children are for the style of learning found in
most schools. The school works closely with all feeder secondary schools both before the
children move to their new schools and then afterwards to ensure that they have settled
in successfully. We run a Year 7 club, where the children can feed back their
experiences, in order for them to touch base with us and their previous classmates and to
inform our preparations with the current Year 6 group. We continue this contact
informally when required and see many of the children again when they apply for work
experience here.
Bowdon C.E. Primary School
Admissions Policy for September 2013
Bowdon C. E. Primary School is a Voluntary Aided School where the Governing Body is the
Admissions Authority. Decisions about admission to the school are made by the School
Governors, not the Local Education Authority or the headteacher. The Governors publish a
brochure to help parents to decide on their choice of schools and to give other important
information about our school. Please look at this carefully before applying for admission.
As an Anglican Church Aided School, RE, collective worship and the whole ethos of the school
are based on the teachings of the Church of England.
The following policy has been agreed by the Governing Body for admissions to the school after
September 1 st 2013 and applies to all classes at the school. The policy is published in the
school prospectus and on the website and follows the latest Government legislation regarding
admissions.
School Applications for September 2013
For admission to reception classes in September 2012, parents will need to complete two
forms if they are applying under criteria 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 & 8 of the school’s admission policy.
The first form is the Trafford Primary/Infant Application Form which is available from the school
office or can be downloaded from Trafford M B C website and must be received at Trafford by
the date published in the Local Authority co-ordinated Admissions scheme (January 2013). This
form is used to record parent’s preferences and other information that will be used by Trafford
to allocate places to children. The school’s planned admission number is 60.
If you include Bowdon C. E. Primary School as one of your preferences on this form your child
will be added to the list which is sent to the school to be put into rank order using the agreed
over-subscription policy. The school will not be told where it has been placed on the preference
form and so this information will not be used in deciding the rank order. If Bowdon C of E
Primary School is your preferred school, then you must place it first on the preference form.
The second form is the school’s Additional Admissions Information Form where parents must
complete all sections in order for the school to place the applications into rank order according
to the agreed over-subscription policy. This rank order will then be used by Trafford to offer
places at the school. Applications for reception children should be received by the date
published in the Local Authority’s co-ordinated scheme ( January 2013).
It is the duty of Governors to comply with class size limits at Key Stage One. Parents who are
not offered a place for their child have the right of appeal under the 1998 Education Act and an
Independent Appeals Panel has been set up specifically for this purpose. To exercise the right
of appeal contact the Legal and Democratic Services Team, Town Hall, Talbot Road, Stretford,
M32 0YT, telephone number 0161 912 4221, to obtain an appeal form.
Bowdon Church School Prospectus 2012/13 Page 15
A waiting list is kept for each year group throughout the academic year. If the school is asked
to admit a pupil outside the normal admission round, under the Fair Access Protocol that child
has priority over pupils on the waiting list. For Reception places the waiting list is kept until the
end of the autumn term.
‘In Year’ and late applications will be administered by Bowdon Church School admissions
team. For ‘In year’ and late applications received outside the normal admissions round, if
places are available then children qualifying under the published criteria will be admitted. If
there are places available but more applicants than places then the published oversubscription
criteria will be applied.
The Governing Body of Bowdon C. E. Primary School reserves the right to withdraw the offer
of a school place where false evidence is received in relation to sibling connections or
permanent place of residence.
If parents are applying for more than one place in any year group (e.g. for twins, triplets or
children from other multiple births), subject to government legislation, should only one child be
offered a place using the Oversubscription Policy, the Governors will always try to offer places
to the other children. However, due to infant class size initiatives, this may not be possible in all
cases. A random allocation overseen by someone independent of the school will be used to
decide which child is offered a place and parents informed of their right of appeal for the other
child/ren.
All children with birthdays from 1 September 2008 until August 2009 are eligible to be admitted
in September 2013. Parents must contact the headteacher on application before considering
deferring their child’s application to the school. Bowdon C.E. Primary School will hold a
deferred place in a reception class up to the beginning of the term after the child’s fifth birthday
and not beyond.
Home address refers to the child’s permanent home at the proposed date of admission. ‘Home’
is defined as where a child wakes up in the morning before attending school. Where a child
lives with parents with equal shared responsibility, the Governors will use the address of the
parent whose residence falls within catchment, (if both residencies are in catchment, the
nearest address to school, using property co-ordinates provided through a combination of the
Trafford Local Land and Property Gazetteer (BS7666) and Royal Mail Postal Address
Information will be used).
* 3 5 *7
*
Where more than one application for admission fulfils the same criterion, the priority for
admission will be determined by the shortest distance between the front door of the child’s
residence (including flats) to the main entrance of the school as measured using property
co-ordinates provided through a combination of the Trafford Local Land and Property
Gazetteer (BS7666) and Royal Mail Postal Address Information.
attendance at church’ it is sufficient for just one parent/carer to attend.
People moving into the parish who are able to support their application
demonstrating their leadership roles in their Anglican Church can also be
considered.
A Christian denomination is a church listed on the “Churches Together”
website (www.churches-together.net).
School Appeals
If you are not successful in gaining a place for your child and feel that fair
process has not been applied, you have the right to an appeal which will be
heard by an independent panel.
Appeals for this school are managed by Trafford admissions and further
information may be found on the Trafford website.
From September 2013 all in year admissions (i.e. those for other years than
children just starting school) will be managed by the school.
