America as a single man of 21<br />
in 1865. On his arrival, he<br />
studied for the priesthood in<br />
Baltimore. <strong>The</strong> following<br />
summer he visited relatives in<br />
Seneca Falls in upstate New<br />
York. Before he left, he fell<br />
sway to the charms of his<br />
eventual wife, Mary Ann<br />
Magill, who was a 16-year-old<br />
housekeeper at the St. Patrick’s<br />
Church parish rectory. After they<br />
were married, Bernard <strong>and</strong> Mary<br />
Ann <strong>and</strong> their family lived<br />
primarily in the Seneca Falls/<br />
Utica area of upstate NY. While<br />
on a job assignment in Baltimore,<br />
MD, in 1879, he contracted<br />
tuberculosis <strong>and</strong> died<br />
there at age 35. He is buried in<br />
Seneca Falls, New York.<br />
We have many sources of<br />
information about Bernard<br />
James <strong>Callan</strong>, <strong>and</strong> will feature a<br />
entire chapter on him later in<br />
this book. <strong>The</strong>se sources include<br />
James died in 1887. Her Rhode<br />
Isl<strong>and</strong> death record of 1921<br />
shows that she was then living in<br />
Providence at the home of her<br />
niece, Maria <strong>Callan</strong> Walker.<br />
(This home at 6 Atkins St.,<br />
known in this branch of the<br />
family as the <strong>Callan</strong> home, was<br />
originally purchased in 1904 <strong>by</strong><br />
Mary’s brother, Philip <strong>Callan</strong>. It<br />
continued to be occupied <strong>by</strong><br />
<strong><strong>Callan</strong>s</strong> until the death of Philip’s<br />
son, James, in 1945.)<br />
Mary is buried in St. Ann’s<br />
Cemetery, Cranston, Rhode<br />
Isl<strong>and</strong>, alongside her brother<br />
Philip, his wife Catherine, two of<br />
St. Joseph’s Church.<br />

in 1862. Details are lacking on <strong>by</strong> <strong>Callan</strong> descendants Terry<br />
