McClary. <strong>The</strong>n he moved back<br />
to Cooper County to live with<br />
Ray <strong>and</strong> Ray’s family for 14<br />
years. <strong>John</strong>’s daughter-in-law<br />
Stella <strong>and</strong> his gr<strong>and</strong>son Clinton<br />
both speak very highly of him,<br />
generally describing him as a<br />
“fine old man” who was friendly,<br />
kind, considerate <strong>and</strong> helpful.<br />
He was good to Stella <strong>and</strong><br />
helped her with chores around<br />
the house. He taught Clinton to<br />
“clean off that hoe <strong>and</strong> shovel<br />
<strong>and</strong> put them away. When you<br />
want to use them again they will<br />
be ready.”<br />
<strong>John</strong>, Ray <strong>and</strong> the boys<br />
didn’t go to church much, but<br />
<strong>John</strong> was baptized when he was<br />
78 years old. When Ray left the<br />
family Stella could not afford to<br />
keep <strong>John</strong>, so <strong>John</strong> stayed with<br />
Everett <strong>and</strong> Will, dying at Will’s<br />
home in 1943.<br />
<strong>The</strong> father of Mary Nancy<br />
Brownfield, Jonas Jonas Brownfield,<br />
Brownfield,<br />
was born 12 Nov. 1820 in<br />
Augusta County, Virginia. He<br />
married Jael K. Collins on 11<br />
July 1845 in Cooper County.<br />
She was born in 1819 <strong>and</strong> died<br />
in Oct. 1887. Jonas migrated<br />
with his parents, <strong>John</strong><br />
Brownfiled <strong>and</strong> Susan Fauber<br />
Brownfield to Tazewell <strong>and</strong><br />
Woodford Counties in Illinois,<br />
then into Pettis County, Missouri<br />
in 1838. Jonas <strong>and</strong> Jael had five<br />
children: Susan Francis<br />
(“Fannie”); Mary Nancy<br />
(Nannie); James Fanklin, Gideon<br />
A. <strong>and</strong> Augustus. Jonas may have<br />
served in the Civil War with his<br />
<strong>John</strong> Robert McClary (second from left) <strong>and</strong> his sons Everett, Charley, Will, George, Ray<br />
brothers. Jael was his midwife.<br />
Abraham “Abe” Brownfield,<br />
Jonas’s half brother, was the<br />
father of Stella Ida Brownfield,<br />
Bert’s paternal gr<strong>and</strong>mother. As<br />
Jonas was the gr<strong>and</strong>father of Ray<br />
McClary <strong>and</strong> Abe was the father<br />
of Ray’s wife, Stella Brownfield<br />
McClary, Nancy McClary’s<br />
great-great-great-great gr<strong>and</strong>father<br />
<strong>John</strong> Brownfield <strong>and</strong> her greatgreat-great<br />
gr<strong>and</strong>father <strong>John</strong><br />
Brownfield were the same<br />

1829 in Augusta County, Va. She<br />
was born in 1801 in Augusta<br />
County, Va. She died on 3 Mar<br />
1859 in Pettis County, Mo.<br />

<strong>John</strong> Brownfield served in<br />
the War of 1812. He married<br />
twice <strong>and</strong> had 16 children.<br />
His first wife, Susannah<br />

Fauber Fauber was born in 1793 in<br />
Augusta County, Va. She died in<br />
Mar 1828 in Augusta County, Va.<br />
<strong>The</strong> children <strong>by</strong> his wife<br />
Susannah Fauber were: Elizabeth,<br />
<strong>John</strong> J., Thomas, Christian,<br />
Jonas (see above), Susan,<br />
Daniel, Catherine <strong>and</strong> Joel.<br />
<strong>The</strong> children <strong>by</strong> his second<br />
wife Catherine Shover were:<br />
Jonathan, Rebecca, David,<br />
Martin, Abraham (Abe),<br />
Gideon, <strong>and</strong> Samuel. In 1832 he<br />
moved with 14 children, his two<br />
brothers <strong>and</strong> their families from<br />
Virginia to Illinois, <strong>and</strong> in 1838<br />
to Pettis County in west central<br />
Missouri.<br />
<strong>The</strong> descendants of <strong>John</strong><br />
Brownfield (1791-1851) are<br />
documented in an 800-pagemanuscript<br />
compiled in the late<br />
1980s, with much of the on-site<br />
cemetery research being done <strong>by</strong><br />
Clinton McClary. As of this<br />
writing, Bert McClary is in<br />
possesion of a bound copy of<br />
this volume.
