Tucker-Auliye Ties Knot, but………….
by H. Oyoumick
Above, Unalakleet Magistrate Heidi Erickson performs a court wedding.
l. to r. Vernon Auliye, Verna Auliye, Mischa Tucker, & Lonnie
Ivanoff (not pictured, but present was Sue Dick.)
Verna (Chickie) Aquileia, daughter of
Pat Bahr, and Mischa Tucker (Mash),
son of the late Ahnungrharuk, exchanged
vows on November 23, 2005
at his home. The bride's Maid-of-
Honor was Sue Dick and the Best-Man
was Lonnie Ivanoff. The occasion was
humble and sweet. Marriage came
quickly for the two and the newly weds
were very happy with the process behind
them.
When asked if he (Mischa) was on
“pins and needles”, his was uncertain to
the cliché. He obviously was getting
very nervous as 2 pm came closer and
closer. He was on the phone reminding
members of his wedding to come and
that his anxieties were building when
the time was dawning on them.
“What’s love got to do with it?” asked
Mischa. “Everything”, replies Chickie.
This event had rumors going around
town that it was just a dream, but the
two were determined and willing to
spend their lives together as husband
and wife.
Vernon was there to “give” away
Chickie, but Heidi did not have that
portion on her list. The reception
shortly followed and a few locals came
to celebrate. Few gifts were given and
the occasion ended with many smiles
from the new bride.
Our congratulations to Mischa and
Chickie. May you have many anniversaries.
Stella & Roger Weds
An impressive ceremonial marriage
between a Unalakleet bride and her
Kaltag groom occurred on January 14,
2006 in Unalakleet. The wedding was
conducted by Covenant’s Pastor Joel
Oyoumick and held at the Stanton
Oyoumick gymnasium. What was most
interesting was the support the couple
got from people along the Yukon and
from the Norton Sound communities.
The festivities included a fiddling band
from the Yukon and evening events that
went to the wee hours into the evening.
Roger and Ditta were on cloud nine
even if the weather was clear and even
if the date of the wedding was days
away.
The garments were made by Yvonne
Sarren and this high-lighted the decorations
shown in the old Covenant gym.
Alex Solomon Jr and his wife, Irene (Kaltag) and Mary Rose Agnes, Dora
Nickoli, and Albert Nickoli are pictured observing the wedding.
(Mary Ettaneglaska, Roger’s mother, wanted to attend but she was afraid to
travel. She is 85 years young.)
Best man was Patrick Medros Sr. and
Ida Demoski was the bride’s maid.
The flower girls were Josephine
Nicholas and Julie Semaken. Louisa
Paniptchuk, Elizabeth McQuesten, and
Loretta Ivanoff were bride’s maid;
Ricky Nickoli, Bones (Harris Jr.)
Ivanoff , and Darold Semaken were
the groom’s men.
The ring bearer was Darold Semaken
Jr. The ushers were Earvin Ivanoff
and Francis Ivanoff (Boy).
Singing for the couple were Beebee
Katchatag and Tony Sarren. They sang
and played their guitar.
The couple would like to thank Heidi
Erickson ,Yvonne Ivanoff, and Elizabeth
(Tiny girl) Paniptchuk. Much help
to the following: The Covenant Church
and NSHC clinic helped with chairs
and set-up; Brett Hanson helped with
the instruments and setting up the instruments
at the memorial hall; Huda
helped with chaperone and “sergeant at
down the aisle.
arms” at the dance; Aurora Johnson for
the pamphlet; and Louisa for planning.
Nulato and Kaltag fiddlers came to play
for the reception. The community
helped with the fare and housing.
