Sub-regional Clinic Named Anikkan Inuit Iluaqutaat

NSHC celebrates Name
Dignitaries and many locals from Unalakleet
help celebrate the naming of the subregional
clinic in Unalakleet.
Below, Helen Pootoogooluk, Acting CEO
for Norton Sound Health Corporation
(NSHC) addresses the naming ceremony at
the sub-regional clinic located in Unalak-
leet. The newly named Anikkan Inuit
Iluaqutaat means “Ruth L. Johnson Place
for Healing.” The name Anikkan is her
Eskimo name and this was a special day
for her and the region.
Ruth was described as a quiet and softspoken
Inupiaq, and yet had stern desire to
improve the welfare and wellness of her
people. Her advocacy role, while lobbying
for health-related facilities, was precise
and an earful to the lawmakers.
Ruth Johnson served on the health board
early in her life and continues to maintain
a strong foundation for the people she
loved. Her tactical style of advocacy apparently
created funding sources to eventually
trickle to Norton Sound.
As a mother of many, Ruth cherished her
role as a mother and continues to stir her
grandchildren towards
success and
determination.
Simon Bekoalook

that a correct recognition
