and if a small cloud around Besboro would move from north to
south, then he knows not to go out in the ocean to hunt oogruk.
Similarly, if the clouds above him move westward at a very slow
rate, then the weather would be good.
He grew up with the reindeer and would walk ten (10) miles from
Noo na choak (summer camp north of Jessie & Coal Mine creeks.
Noo na choak means a little piece of land). He was told to get
more supplies. Walking was his mode of transportation and his
most memorable walk was with his brother-in-law Clarence Towarak
Sr., and Raymond Asiiyuk Towarak. This walk happened
in November of 1950 from Bethel, Alaska to Unalakleet. They
arrived in January of 1951. Much respect is given to Clarence for
his leadership as he would use the stars and his watch for direction.
To survive food had to be rationed and strict orders from
Clarence had to be followed closely.
His other mode of transportation was dog mushing. His leader
Jumbo (& Jumbo’s mother Beauty) were close companions.
His message to the youth: “Stay busy without alcohol and
drugs.”
