breathtaking vistas in the<br />
spring to stunning foliage in the fall,<br />
<strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong> has it all.<br />
Predominantly rural but overwhelmingly<br />
charming, a trip to <strong>Greene</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> is a return to simpler times.<br />
Generations call this land home and<br />
are proud of its rich agricultural and<br />
coal mining history. Outdoor recreation<br />
is also a key part of <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s<br />
appeal, offering dozens of activities<br />
and facilities to keep the young – and<br />
the young at heart – at play.<br />
Located in the southwestern corner<br />
of Pennsylvania, <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
GREENE COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE<br />
is approximately one hour south of<br />
Pittsburgh, with Interstate 79 running<br />
through the central portion of<br />
the county. The county is bordered<br />
to the south by West Virginia, and<br />
the Monongahela River borders<br />
<strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong> to the east, creating<br />
a collection of river towns<br />
and communities.<br />
In addition to numerous historical<br />
sites, integral elements of<br />
<strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s heritage include<br />
its seven covered bridges (Carmichaels,<br />
Cox Farm, King, Scott,<br />
Shriver, White, and Woods), most<br />
of which are more than 100 years<br />
old. The Carmichaels and White<br />
bridges are two of the 10 sites<br />
across <strong>Greene</strong> and Washington<br />
counties that participate in the annual<br />
Covered Bridge Festival, held<br />
every September.<br />
<strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong> is also home to<br />
a dozen Mail Pouch barns (an early-1900’s<br />
advertising campaign for<br />
Mail Pouch Tobacco) and a dozen<br />
general stores, offering one-stop<br />
shopping for residents in the county’s<br />
outlying areas.<br />
Celebrating <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong>’s farming<br />
industry is the main focus behind<br />
agricultural tourism, or agritourism, a<br />
unique promotion of the county’s most<br />
natural resources. Among the county’s<br />
keynote annual events are the <strong>Greene</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> and Jacktown fairs, taking<br />
place each summer.<br />
Coal has been king in <strong>Greene</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> for decades, and the Bituminous<br />
Coal Show held every August is<br />
one way the area marks this valued<br />
piece of its identity. <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
contains five underground coal mines,<br />
which produce more than half of all<br />
coal mined underground in Pennsylvania.<br />
The county is also located<br />
above the Marcellus Shale natural<br />
gas reserves.<br />
In addition to mining, healthcare<br />
and education are two other top industries<br />
in <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Five school<br />
districts, one private university, and<br />
one community college ensure that<br />
residents can be educated from kindergarten<br />
through a master’s or doctoral<br />
degree, all within the county. One hospital<br />
and several healthcare clinics are<br />
also located within <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong>.<br />
The chief governing officials of the<br />
county are the three-person board of<br />
commissioners, elected every four<br />
years. <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong> contains 26<br />
municipalities – 20 townships and<br />
six boroughs – and the county seat is<br />
Waynesburg Borough. <strong>Greene</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
was formed in 1796.
