“More precise than ever”
Offering a blend of modernity, tradition
and technology performance, the Microtor
UG 100 is a calibre automatically wound
and inspired by the legendary Calibre UG 66
created in 1966.
Two years of research and development
went into making this new COSC-certified
self-winding calibre. Composed of parts
produced according to extremely stringent
Team and Baselworld 2007
The name of Universal Genève stands for
the first reversible watches, the first wrist
chronographs as well as the double-pushpiece
chronograph system.
Universal Genève is above all a story of
longevity and horological passion. A recognised
player on the Swiss watch scene since
1894 and settled since 1917 in the Geneva
area, the brand is a force to be reckoned
within the industry. After establishing a carefully
targeted presence in Asia, particularly in
Japan and Hong Kong, Universal Genève is
pursuing its expansion in Europe.
While Baselworld 2006 symbolically heralded
the return of Universal Genève to the
forefront of the watchmaking stage, this new
performance was chiefly determined by a
major teamwork effort.
Within the current Swiss watch industry,
where a brand’s survival depends on increasingly
restrictive competitive factors,
Universal Genève offers models merging elegance,
modernity and hand craftsmanship.
These values are eloquently illustrated in the
latest timepieces presented in 2006 such as
the Microrotor UG 100, the Okeanos Compax
or the Okeanos Aero-Compax.
Remaining loyal to its original values while
demonstrating a sense of modern aesthetics:
such is the philosophy of this prestigious historical
brand.Focusing on excellence is the
primary goal of Universal Genève today.
produced in 1966, the Microtor UG
emblematic model endowed with a distinctive
identity that is entirely faithful to
the brand’s original values.
Merging modernity, tradition and
It is equipped with a hand-wound 12hour
a stylised depiction of the night sky, with
an undulating zone around the rim serving
as an elegant counterpoint. The
hand-polished hour-markers as well as
the hour and minute hands are crafted
in 18-carat gold, while the large
seconds hand is in blued steel, a sure
this movement is hand-decorated in harmony
with the finest watchmaking gradations.
Questions to Vincent Lapaire,
CEO, Universal Genève
How is Universal Genève doing at the
moment?
Considerable effort has been expended
on enhancing brand visibility and
this is starting to bear fruit. Universal
Genève has returned to its original
values and the public recognises the
fundamental stage.
2007: A distinctly
horological collection
The models to be unveiled at Baselworld
this year confirm the renewal process that
Universal Genève has been experiencing
over the past two years.
With an exclusive men’s watch interpreted
in two different versions- one of them
featuring a sporting chic appearance and
Which suppliers do you work with?
Exclusively with the finest Swiss suppliers.
These are talented craftsmen who
work with passionate dedication to provide
high-quality products, thus enabling
us to meet the demands of an ever more
demanding clientele.
What are your current objectives in
Europe?
Our primary goal is to bring the brand
back to its original birthplace, meaning
Switzerland. In a second phase, we will
focus our attention developing the traditional
markets such as Germany, Italy,
France and Spain-on all of which
Universal Genève has been successful in
the past.
Which is your special favourite within
the Universal Genève collection, and
why?
Beyond any doubt, the Microtor UG
100, representing a perfect alliance between
traditional watchmaking and timeless
aesthetics.
the other more understated classic lines -
Universal Genève will be presenting a distinctly
horological collection. In keeping with
the spirit of the brand’s legendary models,
the 2007 collection will offer a series of
modern and contemporary timepieces that
will delight enthusiasts of fine mechanical
What do you see as the spirit of the new
2007 collection?
More masculine and more characteristic
of the Universal Genève historical
models such as the Polerouter or the
Compax. The appearance of dials and
hands with Superluminova, as well as
calfskin straps, will give the watches a
more sporty, youthful appearance.
If you had to describe this 2007 collection
in comparison to last year’s?
It is even more refined, since we have
resized the watch cases, streamlined the
bezels, lengthened the lugs and increased
the curve of the sapphire crystals so
as to further improve the ergonomic
comfort and flowing lines of the watches.
Have you already set a specific goal for
2008?
We have been working since 2005 on
a major development based on the
Microtor technology, which we hope to
see taking shape in 2008.
watches. Two new chronographs will also
round off this new men’s collection.
Women will also be in the spotlight in
Basel this year, since Universal Genève is
promising some stunning surprises with a
gem-set jewellery variation of the exquisitely
elegant Anthea model.
At Baselworld 2007, the Universal
Genève booth will be located in the
famous “Hall of Desires”. While the actual
spot is the same as 2006, the size of the
booth itself bears no comparison, since
Universal Genève will spread over a 96
than the previous year, and comprise
two levels. Four presentation rooms on
the upper floor will provide space for the
