processing, structure, properties, performance and process control. Analytical, experimental, and numerical studies

are supported, including novel processing methods for any materials system (metals, polymers, ceramics, hybrids,

composites, etc.). Proposed research should include the consideration of cost, performance, and feasibility of scaleup,

as appropriate.

NSF: Designing Materials to Revolutionize and Engineer our Future

The NSF Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) and Engineering (ENG) Directorates invested a total of just

over $12 million for 22 grants in support of 14 distinct DMREF projects intended to yield a range of new

developments, including new lightweight yet rigid polymers; highly durable, multi-layered materials for aircraft engines

and power plants; new data storage technology based on spin electronics; composites for converting heat to

electricity; novel designer glasses; membranes that function as well as biological counterparts; new techniques to

develop exceptionally hard coatings; and many others.

Univ Southampton optimiza la fortaleza de las nanofibras de vidrio

The discovery that silica nanofibers are more resilient when their size is decreased has resulted in creation of the

strongest, lightest-weight silica nanowires ever created. The findings could transform the aviation, marine and

security industries. Weight for weight, silica nanowires are 15 times stronger than high-strength steel and 10 times

stronger than conventional GRP (glass reinforced plastic), said University of Southampton professor Sir David Payne,

who recently received a knighthood from the Queen for his service to photonics.

high level of turbulent skin-friction occurring, e.g., on the surface of an aircraft, is responsible for excess fuel

consumption and increased carbon emissions. The environmental, political, and economic pressure to improve fuel

efficiency and reduce carbon emissions associated with transportation means that reducing turbulent skin-friction

drag is a pressing engineering problem.

Our ambition is to probe the strength of second phases in multiphase metal alloys and composites, meaning of hard

particles added to strengthen a metal, or alternatively of brittle inclusions that weaken it. Such phases are ubiquitous

in structural metals; yet not much is known of the microstructural features that govern their strength. The underlying

hypothesis of this project is that defects that limit the strength of such hard second phases can be identified and then

altered by processing.

Tribological properties of lubricant additives of Fe, Cu and Co

nanoparticles

Tribological investigations were performed on mineral oil containing Fe, Cu and Co nanoparticles and their

combinations. The tribological tests showed that each set of nanoparticles significantly reduced the friction coefficient

and wear (up to 1.5 times) of friction pairs. The use of Cu nanoparticles provides the most effective reduction of

friction and wear in each combination of nanoparticles.

Antifogging coatings with hydrophilic or even superhydrophilic wetting behavior have received significant attention

due to their ability to reduce light scattering by film-like condensation. However, under aggressive fogging conditions,

these surfaces may exhibit frost formation or excess and nonuniform water condensation, which results in poor

optical performance of the coating.

Investigations on mechanical properties of A356 nanocomposites

Mechanical properties of A356 nano and micro composites are compared in this work. These are fabricated by

reinforcing nano and micro silicon carbide (SiC) particles of sizes 34 nm and 125 µm respectively. The nanoparticles

are produced by high energy ball milling for reinforcement and micro particles are procured from Silcarb industries,

Bangalore, India. Synthesis techniques chosen for nano and micro composite fabrication are ultrasonic cavitation

assisted dispersion and stir casting.

We demonstrate a magnetic technique for assembling bidisperse and tridisperse colloidal particle fluids into a variety

of complex structures with dimensionality ranging from 0-D (rings) to 1-D (chains) to 2-D (tiles). Compared with prior

work on bidisperse particles that are commensurate in size, here we explore the assembly of different sized particles,

and we show that due to packing constraints, new particle structures can be realized experimentally.

It has been claimed that graphene growth on copper by chemical vapor deposition is dominated by crystallization

from the surface initially supersaturated with carbon adatoms, which implies that the growth is independent of

hydrocarbon addition after the nucleation phase. Here, we present an alternative growth model based on our

observations that oppose this claim.

ruptured upon spin-coating. Three different CPBs were synthesized, having a methacrylate backbone, carrying

branches of poly[oligo(ethylene glycol)methacrylate] (POEGMA), POEGMA-block-poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl

methacrylate] (POEGMA-b-PDMAEMA), and POEGMA-block-poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl

trimethylammoniumiodide] (POEGMA-b-PMETAI).
