welcome
aboard!
The Jetstar team is excited
this month to celebrate our
100th aircraft.
Almost nine years ago, we
commenced Jetstar operations with
a fleet of 13 Boeing 737 aircraft.
These aircraft were phased out with
the introduction of what was to
become the backbone of our
short-haul operations across
Australia and the Asia-
Pacific region – the
Airbus A320.
We now operate
89 aircraft in
the A320 family
and 11 long-haul
A330 aircraft to 60
destinations in 16
countries and territories
across Asia-Pacific.
Many of the team who started
with Jetstar in its early days still
work for us today. No one in the
original team waving off our
inaugural flight from Newcastle
to Melbourne in 2004 could have
It’s exciting
what new
destinations we’ll
be announcing
Jayne Hrdlicka
Group CEO, Jetstar Airways
Jayne@jetstar.com
predicted that nearly nine years
later, we would be celebrating
inaugural Jetstar flights from
Tokyo to Oita and Nagoya.
We have 100 aircraft today;
100 more aircraft have been
ordered, and are on their way
over the coming years. That is a
lot of additional flights for you.
It is exciting to imagine what
new destinations we
will be announcing
in years to come as
Jetstar continues
to grow.
Flying made easy.
Avalon Airport is Melbourne’s easy way to fly. There’s no
freeway congestion, no expensive road tolls, no long queues,
but there is a comfortable passenger lounge and free kids
playroom. Our car park is only metres from the terminal, and
you’ll always find a spot. But most importantly, our airport is
like a home away from home. You could say we’re the airport
with less turbulence.
This Perth attraction hasn’t
If you can’t slot in a full day’s
dive while in Perth, the
Aquarium of Western Australia
(AQWA) is a great one-stop survey of
marine life, summing up the state’s
coastal and coral reef systems in over
40 live exhibits.
Covering the state from one end
to the other, each themed section
showcases different underwater
realms and their inhabitants, from
the Great Southern Coast’s curiouslooking
seadragons to the Perth
Coast’s drifting moon jellyfish and
beyond. AQWA is also home to
Australia’s largest underwater tunnel,
the Shipwreck Coast, where sharks,
turtles, stingrays and vibrant schools
of fish glide around you in 3 million
litres of Indian Ocean water.
Little ones will enjoy handling and
petting creatures like starfish at
AQWA Marmion Marine Park’s
Touch Pool and taking a close
peek at the occupants of Stingray
Bay. Those with extra time and
cash to spare can sign up for the
interactive Reefwalker tour, and
wade among the corals or snorkel
with nurse sharks in the Shipwreck
Coast aquarium.
The attraction will be celebrating
its Silver Jubilee with a treasure hunt
from 13 April to 7 May, when eagleeyed
visitors can stand a chance to win
a prize, including a 1kg silver bar, on
the gum ball
music festival
Ahead of Sydney’s bushland celebration of music, arts and
friendly vibes, artist manager and publicist Tracey Collier
Griffiths talks about the art of courting acts
As artist manager and
publicist for The Gum Ball
Festival, a weekend of camping,
music and arts in the Hunter
Valley, Tracey Collier Griffiths
leaves nothing to chance when
getting the details nailed
down tight.
Booking acts for the festival
isn’t always a straightforward
ball game. “Some come in quite
effortlessly; some take weeks.
The art is knowing what they’re
worth and making a compromise
for what we’re willing to pay, ”
says Griffiths. “You have to be
willing to walk away.”
English folk-rock duo Turin
Brakes and Australian blues
singer Mia Dyson top this year’s
bill, which ticks off genres from
hip hop to gothic rock. “We
chose to keep it really diverse –
above all, we look for quality and
they need to be kick-ass live,” says
Griffiths. “Turin Brakes are a
favourite of mine and we’re really
happy to have them on board.”
While working with a small
team to bring all the logistics
together can prove challenging,
Griffiths finds The Gum Ball’s
independent roots rewarding. “I
love what Gum Ball stands for –
a family-friendly festival that’s
not at all ‘scene-y’. People come
for, say, the blues and walk away
loving the hip hop,” she says.
The Gum Ball Festival is on 25
& 26 April. thegumball.com.au
This modern take on the traditional
Japanese okonomiyaki
(savoury pancake) is easy
to prepare at home
ingredients
60g ready-made okonomiyaki
batter mix (available at
supermarkets)
5g grated yam
200g finely sliced cabbage
10g prawn-flavoured tempura fried
pieces (made from tempura batter,
available at supermarkets)
3g spring onion
1 egg
3g grated red ginger
5g lard
30g okonomiyaki sauce
90g frozen, ready-made gyoza
(about 5 small gyozas)
½ brinjal (sliced into semi-circles)
½ tomato (sliced into semi-circles)
20g pesto sauce
finely chopped red shiso leaves
This recipe is contributed by chef
Hirama Kennosuke from Kangeki
Tanuki, an okonomiyaki specialist
restaurant in Shinsaibashi, Osaka.
Visit the restaurant’s two outlets
method
1 Fry the frozen gyoza for 5 minutes
on one side in a hot frying pan until
golden brown.
2 Mix okonomiyaki batter, grated
yam, finely sliced cabbage, tempura
pieces, spring onion, egg and grated
red ginger, introducing air into the
mixture while doing so.
3 On a pre-heated hot plate or pan,
lay out half of the mixture in a 25cm
by 10cm rectangular shape. Cook for
5 minutes.
4 At the same time, arrange gyoza
on top and cover it with the rest of
the mixture.
5 After 5 minutes, flip the halfcooked
modanyaki over and cook
for another 5 minutes.
6 On another hot plate or pan, fry
the brinjal and tomato in lard.
7 Cut the modanyaki in half along
its length, showing the gyoza.
8 Apply okonomiyaki sauce
generously over the surface of the
modanyaki and garnish with the
brinjal, tomato, pesto sauce and
chopped red shiso leaves on top.
A brace of new wiener outlets
indicate that hot dogs are the
next big thing in bespoke snacks
There’s a growing wave of
wiener aficionados making
gourmet dogs for dinner.
Those looking for the newly opened
Soda Factory in Sydney will find
themselves at Bobby’s Boss Dogs, a
bright, tiny takeaway. Open the door
of its vintage Coke machine and
you’ll enter a moody cocktail-andlive-music
space.
While co-owner Graham Cordery
admits the tiny hot dog space is
meant to be a “cheesy” front, he’s
taking the franks seriously. “We’re
trying to raise the bar for what
people’s impressions are for a hot
dog in Sydney,” he says. “We make
them ourselves.” That includes
versions like the Fats Domino, a
pork dog with gumbo and cheese,
and the Mob Dog, a pork and fennel
sausage with roast capsicum and
onion and fresh chilli.
It’s just part of a string of gourmet
Enjoy the flavours of Cuba
during cocktail hour
Havana Bar is tucked inside two
historic Te Aro workingmen’s
cottages on Wigan Street,
Wellington. The space has evolved
over its 10-year history, from a tiny
haunt frequented by locals
to an award-winning bar and
tapas restaurant.
“We are inspired by the colours
and culture of Cuba, embracing
the country’s rum, cigars, food
and music,” says Holly Gulliver,
Havana Bar’s general manager. “We
focus on providing high-quality
beverages and food in an easygoing,
unpretentious atmosphere.
Everyone is welcome in our house.”
One of Havana Bar’s signature
cocktails is the Lemongrass Reviver,
giving a contemporary Asian twist
to their drinks menu. Holly says:
“This drink will refresh you and
replenish your energy levels. We
use quite earthy ingredients [bison
grass vodka, good-quality ginseng
with fresh ginger and lemongrass]
to create a healthy cocktail. It
is delicious!”
lemongrass
reviver recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
» 30ml Zubrowka
(bison grass vodka)
» 15ml Lillet Blanc
» 10ml Chinese ginseng
» 15ml Rose’s lime cordial
» 30ml cloudy apple juice
» Half a stalk of fresh lemongrass
» 2 thumbs of fresh ginger
METHOD:
Slice ginger and lemongrass, and
muddle in a Boston glass until the
aromas are released. Add all other
ingredients, fill glass to the brim with
ice and shake hard. Double-strain
into a chilled martini glass and
garnish with a lemongrass shard.
WHAT IS IT?
Cumulus Shiraz 2010 ($35, from
independent bottle shops or online).
WHY IS IT SPECIAL?
This shiraz is handmade by senior
winemaker Debbie Lauritz and
the winemaking team at Cumulus Estate Wines in
Orange, New South Wales.
“Orange benefits from the ancient volcanic soils
created by Mount Canobolas, and we have some of
the highest vineyards in Australia,” says Debbie.
HOW DOES IT TASTE?
It has an aroma of black cherry and exotic
spices, which are joined on the palate by dark
chocolate and plum. Oak maturation gives depth,
complexity and spice to the lingering fruit finish.
WHAT TO PAIR IT WITH:
“Most red meat or game dishes,” says Debbie.
at scenic Taupo, NZ, home of the
water-touch bungy jump
A moment ago I was standing in
line, waiting to buy a ticket. Nobody
forced me to bungy jump – I
foolishly volunteered. Getting cold
feet is common for jumpers, but it
rarely takes place in the ticket booth.
A grinning instructor fits me with
all manner of straps and cords. I
guess I’d be smiling too, if I didn’t
have to plummet 47 metres. Instead of
easing my doubts, the safety harness
accelerates them to fever pitch.
“One, two, three… Go!,” says the
instructor, smirking. Terror roots me
to the spot, as all my instincts beg
me not to jump. I inhale the brisk
mountain air. I bend at the knees,
planning to nosedive as I’ve
been instructed.
Before I know it, I’m scrambling
about in a mid-air doggy paddle
as my body braces for an impact
that just doesn’t come. Instead of
speeding up as I had predicted, time
slows to a devastating halt.
As I begin to enjoy my freefall
descent, I’m suddenly jerked back up.
The rush of blood to my head forces
me to close my eyes. Reeling up
and down like a yo-yo in the clouds,
it takes the self-dubbed “search
and rescue” team several attempts
before I can grab hold of the steel
rod they’re frantically waving at me
and lower myself into their dinghy.
A quick paddle back to dry land and
I’m high-fiving everyone in sight.
Q: Why is hiking so good
for you?
A: All our leg muscles get a full
workout when we walk. Our core
muscles are engaged and muscles
associated with our cardiovascular
system get a gentle but healthy rev-up.
Q: hoW do i improve fitness
for an epic hike?
A: A brisk 30-minute walk daily
will see your fitness improve and
is a good start. Then move to
40 minutes, then 60, preferably
incorporating as much up and down
as possible.
Q: any hot tips for hikes in
australia and nZ?
A: The Larapinta Trail traversing
the West MacDonell ranges is an
epic hike. The newest development
is on Tasmania’s Tasman
Peninsula with the Three Capes
Track, the portion incorporating
Fortescue Bay to Cape Huay being
recently upgraded and opened.
In New Zealand, don’t miss
combining the Routeburn Track
with the Hollyford Track, taking
you from near Queenstown over
the main divide to the West Coast.
It was June in Melbourne, and
we were seriously yearning
for the sun. For us, that would
normally mean somewhere in South-
East Asia. But this time my husband
and I were travelling with our three
eldest children – who are 5, 7 and
8 – so for peace of mind, we sought
out a destination guaranteeing firstworld
comforts like potable tap water
alongside the usual room service
and white towels.
So we decided on Hawaii, and
the island of Oahu. North Shore
came first – it was semi-rural, as we
discovered when we hired a car and
set off on our many day trips. There
were shrimp farms everywhere, and
we bought lunch from food trucks
parked at the side of the road. We
embarked on a quest to find the
move, an hour or so down the
highway to Waikiki and its strip of
American enticements (Victoria’s
worked out better. Not only that, but
our hotel – a time-honoured beauty
known as The Royal Hawaiian –
shared an enormous waterslide with
the property next door, which the
children adored.
The significance of this cannot be
Maybe that’s why I agreed to go
We want all our designs to be
innovative and exciting as well
What’s a major jewellery trend
this year that your label is
looking to capitalise on?
Colour – in all its glory! This year
rose-gold accents and faceted
pieces such as large linked
necklaces and intricately patterned
is raw and urban, with an injection
of leather cuffs for 2013.
Timeless, elegant and unique
are words I’d use to describe the
Innerpower collections.
What’s a major jewellery trend
this year that your label is looking
to capitalise on?
This year’s focus is very much on
personalised jewellery. Our new
interchangeable pendants and
I adore the interchangeable
Aussie actress Rose Byrne has a starring role in the uproarious
In person, Rose Byrne looks very
young – far younger than her 33
years. She is tiny, very slim, all
coltish legs, gamine and fresh faced.
She jumps up when I walk into the
room, and as good as blushes.
“I’m not happy talking about
myself,” she says. “I just… I’m happy
talking about my work, but I’m not
really into revealing everything
about me.” She gives a short laugh
and a grin. “There’s not much to
know about me, anyway.”
I’m not sure that’s strictly true.
It might well be the case that this
Australian actress had somehow
stealthily slipped under the radar,
despite being in blockbusters such
as Troy (she played Briseis) and
X-Men: First Class. All that has
changed, however, since Byrne
starred in the 2011 box-office hit
Bridesmaids as the uptight, beautiful
Helen – the nemesis of the main
character, Annie, played by Kristen
Wiig (who also wrote the film).
It was pretty hard to warm to
Helen, I say to Byrne. “I know,”
she says, her hands going to her
face. “When I read for Helen in my
audition I knew I wanted to play her
because she’s just so kind of awful,
but then… you end up feeling sorry
for her. She’s actually quite sad in
some ways.”
Bridesmaids was a comedy and, as
such, a departure for Byrne. Before
that she was best known for her
role in the television drama series
Damages alongside Glenn Close.
“I find myself
drawn to
things that make
me laugh”
“I’ve always wanted to do
comedy,” insists Byrne. “I find
myself drawn to things that make
me laugh, and it was such a great
opportunity. When I was young,
that’s what I imagined I would do –
be in comedies and hopefully make
people laugh.”
Her star turn as Helen brought
her to the attention of the British
director Dan Mazer, who cast her
in his romantic comedy I Give It
a Year. Byrne plays Nat, the newly
married wife of Rafe Spall’s Josh.
They have, essentially, married in
haste and to the wrong people.
“Dan has subverted the romantic
comedy so that it plays in reverse,”
says Byrne. “Rafe and I have just got
married, but we’ve got together for
the wrong reasons. My character is
glossy and sophisticated, and she is
looking for stability, which she finds
in Rafe’s character. But he’s not the
one for her, and vice versa.”
It’s a hard trick to pull off, to build
a film around the disintegration of
a once-romantic relationship rather
than the traditional uplifting tale of
boy-meets-girl.
“It was certainly difficult when
two people get on as well as Rafe
and I do,” she says, laughing. “It was
really hard to play someone who
was falling out of love with a person
I really, really like. We had to pull
off something difficult – the viewer
has to root for the failure of their
relationship. And it had to
be funny!”
There is light at the end of the
tunnel, though. “Well,” she says,
“it’s a comedy, so there are two
other people who are better suited
to Nat and Josh.” One of them is
fellow Aussie Simon Baker, of The
Mentalist.
“He is so
good looking,
isn’t he?”
says Byrne,
widening her
premiere » altitude
eyes. “They are much better suited
and I had a great time with him, too.”
Before I met Byrne, Mazer told me
she was his first choice for the film.
“I saw her in Bridesmaids,” he said,
“and I was told that in the scene where
she and Kristen Wiig are outbidding
each other to be the bride’s best friend
[Annie and Helen take turns leaping
on to the stage, with ever more
gushing speeches about the bride at
a party], Rose had improvised most
of it. She has a real comic touch. I
was delighted when she read the
script and said she was interested
in playing Nat. She’s so good in it –
beautiful, cool and very funny.”
Byrne grew up in the Sydney
suburb of Balmain. Her parents –
Jane, a primary school teacher, and
Robin, a statistician – lived what
Byrne calls “an ordinary life”. “I had
a great childhood,” she says. “We
all hung out and it was very relaxed
and easy going.”
No one in her family acted, so
where did she get the bug? She
thinks for a second.
“I don’t know. I was always into
it… I think it was because I was the
youngest of four children and I
wanted people to notice me.”
57
58
She says she was fortunate that
her parents were supportive of her
choice to be an actress. “It was all
very new [to them] but they were
happy for me to do it. It makes such
a difference when that happens. I’ve
met people whose parents weren’t
supportive, and it’s debilitating.”
Byrne started acting when she was
eight, starring in a film called Dallas
Doll at 13. It took a film called Two
Hands to really put her on the map
– while her co-star would soon go on
to achieve worldwide fame. “I acted
with Heath Ledger.” She looks sad
when she says the late actor’s name.
After that, there was a small role
in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack
of the Clones and then Troy
in 2004. It was her first
real blockbuster
experience. “Troy
was something
else,” she says.
“There were so
many of us – and
the budget! It
was really wild!”
She also had a love
scene with Brad Pitt,
who played Achilles.
She laughs when I ask
about it. “It was a long time ago.”
Now she lives in New York. “I just
enjoy my life,” she says. “That’s my
new challenge.” Does she want to do
more comedy? “Absolutely!” she says.
Her aim now is to take more time
out for herself. “I may have to!” she
says. “I don’t have anything on the
horizon right now.” She’s being
characteristically modest: there
are at least four films coming up,
including The Turning – based on
short stories by Tim Winton – and
Insidious: Chapter 2,
which are now filming,
and a rumoured return to
the X-Men franchise.
“I am very determined,” Byrne
says. “I do have fun, but a lot of my
adult life has been about work. I
know that needs to change. I need
to feel less intense about it so… we’ll
see what happens!”
Rose Byrne is starring in I Give
“This is never going to work,” I think
to myself as I survey the group.
Between the eight of us, we range in
age from 16 to 70-plus, and none of
us have any rafting experience.
It’s been a dry summer and the
water’s low, so the first day is mainly
spent carrying our boats along the
two rafts, we quickly learn to work
as teams and I’m surprised at how
efficient we are by the time the first
of our wilderness campsites comes
into view.
Rafting the Franklin River begins
the next day. I soon lose track of
time as we live and breathe this
wild stretch of Tasmanian water. We
depend on each other to negotiate
tricky sections of rapids, and
everyone is bumped from the raft at
The chill of winter has finally
subsided, and there really
is no better time to visit
Japan. On big race days, Kyoto
Racecourse offers kids the chance
to get close to the horses. Start off
by saddling up for a short (and very
gentle) ride offered around a small
circuit – a thrilling experience they
won’t forget in a hurry. Horse-cart
rides are also available, as well as
a playground with a large, horsethemed
bouncy castle. You can
Stroll through the many
cherry treeS, let the kids
loose in the taiyo-no-hiroba
play area
catch the racehorses in action while
you’re here too, so settle down on
the lawns beside the track and
cheer on the gee-gees as they come
galloping by. Kyoto Racecourse
has events most weekends, and the
next major meeting is the Tenno
Sho on 28 April. With an affordable
admission fee of just ¥200 (AU$2),
you can’t go wrong with a day at the
races, Japan style.
Take a break from Osaka’s
concrete jungle and head for the
greenery of Osaka Castle Park.
Here, you can take a stroll through
the many cherry trees, explore
Nishinomaru Garden, let the kids
loose in the Taiyo-no-hiroba play
area and visit majestic Osaka
Castle. Founded 400 years ago,
a succession of wars and fires
destroyed the castle’s original
buildings and towers, so the
structure you see today is actually
a replica. But what the modern-day
castle lacks in authenticity, it makes
up for in grandeur. Inside the main
tower you’ll find a museum that
chronicles the castle’s turbulent
history. Kids can have fun dressing
up in historical costumes, while
you marvel at spectacular views
across the city from the top-floor
observation deck.
The city’s newest attraction is
Kyoto Aquarium. It has nine special
areas, including the Penguin, Sea
Animals and Ocean zones, as well
as the “Rivers of Kyoto” exhibition,
which includes fish and plant
dedicated to the creation of Cup
package it and take it home to enjoy.
Though the exhibits’ explanations
After a six-hour bus ride from
Hanoi, we arrive in Ha Giang City. I
call a local named Nam to rent some
motorbikes and, not long after, my
travel mates and I hit the road.
With wind biting at our legs, we
drive past Quan Ba’s “Heaven Gate”
– the gateway to Dong Van Plateau.
Stretching out before us is a vast
emerald-green carpet of terraced
paddy fields. Rivers zigzag through
narrow canyons. Rugged limestone
mountains dwarf shabby houses.
I feel a sense of panic as
we swerve through the road’s
hairpin bends, but the further
from civilisation we get, the more
fascinating everything becomes and
I soon relax. Piles of jagged rocks
are stacked along the roadside. Hill
tribes use them to make homes and
fences, and they fill every possible
gap in the rocks with maize seeds.
During harvest time, women’s sacks
Families trade it for rice and other
necessities, and use it to brew wine.
We decide to spend the night
in a cheap hotel in Dong Van,
then breakfast on biscuits left
over from our bus trip. The hotel
staff kindly offer us Shan tea, a Ha
Giang delicacy, to wash them down.
Fortified, we saddle up and head
to Lung Cu, where a giant tower
stands as an emblem of Vietnamese
sovereignty. From Lung Cu we ride
to Meo Vac and with each corner,
the landscape changes. Between
Dong Van and Meo Vac, sunshine
bounces off the mountains and a
double rainbow comes into view.
In town, we ride past old men
wearing black trousers and berets,
and tribal women in fluffy dresses
huddled together in big groups to
share the weight of heavy loads. We
stop and overhear a group of women
chatting about a market in Meo Vac
tomorrow, so we quickly change our
plans and stay the night to catch it.
When we wake, the town is
shrouded in a thick mist. The
market is in full swing when
we arrive, heaving with stalls of
fresh produce. Pigs are strapped
to the back of dusty motorbikes;
green cabbages spill out onto the
pavement and jars of honey are
snapped up as quickly as they are
put on sale. Local men congregate
to quaff DIY corn spirits and puff
on bamboo pipes. When the chaos
starts to die down, we set off for Ha
Giang City.
A few hours later, exhausted and
covered in dust, we stop and swim
in a river. With only a few kilometres
left to drive, we stumble across
a rest stop, where we are greeted
with an ice-cold beer and possibly
the most beautiful view on Earth
– miles and miles of lush rolling
hills, glistening in the evening light.
It’s our last chance to absorb the
dreamlike landscape before taking
the night bus back to Hanoi.
sudoku
Grab a pencil, put on your thinking cap and join the craze!
The objective of sudoku is to fill in
the missing squares so that each
row, column and 3x3 box contains
the numbers 1 through to 9. To get
you started, here are a few tactics…
Scan each horizontal and vertical
band consisting of three 3x3 boxes.
It’s often easiest to start in a spot
with the most numbers already
given. If you can find the same
number in two rows, you know
that number must be in the third
6
9 2 7 3
7 2 5 9
2 3 6
3 4 1
8 4 1
8 1 7 6
2 9 1 4
7
(the same goes for columns). Now
see which intersecting rows and
columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This
method is called slicing and dicing.)
Some sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of
individual squares. Once you have
a few numbers filled in, you may
also find it handy to jot down a list
of missing numbers for each row,
column and box.
Myanmar’s street children are
getting a helping hand
Yangon train station bustles
with commuters rushing to
catch the next train, while
vendors navigate the platforms
selling snacks and drinks. Among
the daily commotion, hardly anyone
notices the street children weaving
in and out of the crowd, collecting
the empty water bottles left behind.
For these children, the train station
is their means of survival and
competition is fierce.
Fifteen-year-old Phyo used to be
one of these children. Phyo’s family
lives in a village over two hours from
Yangon. When Phyo’s father had a
stroke and could no longer work,
there was not enough income to
support Phyo and his three sisters.
Phyo decided to run away to the
city in search of work. However, he
could not find a job, so he collected
plastic bottles at the train station to
earn money.
“I felt scared and sad. I missed
home,” Phyo says. “At home I slept
soundly and warmly. I don’t like
sleeping on the streets,” he says.
Phyo struggled for survival for
more than a month until he came
across a World Vision project,
supported by StarKids, which is
working to protect and care for
vulnerable street kids and working
children in Myanmar.
“World Vision staff invited me
to come to the drop-in centre,” says
Phyo. World Vision then arranged for
Phyo to return home to his family.
“I can’t even tell you how I felt
when I saw him again,” says Daw
Maw, Phyo’s mother. “I’m so happy
and thankful my son came home
safely,” she says.
World Vision also supported
Phyo’s family to start a small
business selling groceries. “I will go
back to school if we can save some
money,” says Phyo. “And if that’s not
possible I will learn a profession,
like repairing cars.”
I will go back
to school if we
can save some
money… if not I’ll
learn a profession
Words: Therese Johnson Photos: Khaing Min hToo/World Vision

streets of Yangon, Phyo has been
In January, as part of the Australian
Open action, Jetstar team members
had a StarKids Tennis Day fundraiser
(left). Staff were lucky to have Fred
Stolle, a former French and US Open
winner, as Master of Ceremonies.
The afternoon was spent enjoying
a knockabout with professional
coaches. Women’s Tennis Association
(WTA) champion Jelena Jankovic also
made a special appearance. It was a
fun day for all, with proceeds from
gold coin donations and raffle prizes
going towards supporting special
Q: How did
you become a
Jetstar pilot?
A: I started my
flying career on
the Sunshine
Coast at the age of 14, flying a
Skyfox ultralight at weekends while
I finished school. I then attained
my Private and Commercial Pilot
licence. After gaining some further
experience I progressed to flying
twin-engine aircraft in the Torres
Strait and transporting the mail
throughout Cape York Peninsula, in
Far North Queensland. During this
time I also successfully completed
my Air Transport Pilot licence, which
allows you to fly larger aircraft.
Beginning with Jetstar was a
whole new, exciting experience. I
completed my A320 endorsement
at Oxford Aviation Academy
in Gatwick, UK, allowing me to
experience the A320 in action as I
was engaged in simulator training.
Top three bars
The Ballarat Trading Co is my usual
watering hole. If I were to stray from
my local, it would be for a cocktail at
The Bunker or a quiet drink with tapas
at Atlas.
Best day trip from the city
Take a coach, cruise or fly to Milford
Sound. All of them are perfect ways to
see all aspects of this stunning fjord.
Best place for
outdoor exercise
The Remarkables mountains are a big
year-round playground for walkers,
skiers, snowboarders and bikers.
Most beautiful view in
your city
If you feel the need to scope
out panoramic views, walk up
Queenstown Hill. There’s a cool
sculpture up there called the Basket
of Dreams.
Recommend a
“secret” spot
Skippers Canyon is remote
gorgeousness – a velvet blanket of
landscape steeped in history. Take
your lunch and preferably your car.
Things to do that make
you look like a local
Don’t look twice at a celebrity, and walk
around Lake Hayes anti-clockwise.
Top three bars
Check out the Tiki Bar at Alfred &
Constance and the effortlessly cool
Sixes & Sevens, which are both in
Fortitude Valley. Glide around the
CityCat to Matt Moran’s new venture
Riverbar & Kitchen for a relaxed vibe
and a stunning view of the Story Bridge.
Top three places to catch
a live band
Head to Lock ’n’ Load in West End for
laid-back tunes, or listen to smooth
jazz at The Bowery. If you’re young
and looking for fun, try Kerbside.
Best place for
outdoor exercise
Riverlife Adventure Centre offers a
diverse choice of outdoor activities,
from rock climbing to rollerblading,
at the spectacular Kangaroo Point
cliffs. On Friday nights, they do a
great Paddle & Prawns experience on
the Brisbane River, which provides a
different perspective of the River City.
Most beautiful view in
your city
Enjoy a sensational view of the
Brisbane River and Story Bridge with
a glass of champagne from Mr & Mrs
G Riverbar, a stylish bar at Riverside.
Best cheap dining
My favourite for cheap eats is The
a big group of friends. The owner,
for years.
