FRONTLINES FRONTLINE Rock art The state of California recently spent $10 million on a giant rock. The 8m-high lump is an art installation by Michael Heizer. Levitated Mass is on permanent display on a 140m long metal beam at the LA County Museum of Art. Heizer fi rst envisaged the work in the 1960s, but only recently found the right rock. It’s one of the largest monoliths to be moved since ancient times, and weighs about as much as 300 Fiat Puntos. See lacma.org. SCENERY 12 Holland Herald The slow lane Best foot forward Idea ■ Easy-going groceries Invention ■ Shoe with soul Guide dogs may soon be out of a job; a new shoe called Le Chal (‘take me there’ in Hindi), has been developed to help blind people navigate. It uses a smart phone’s GPS and compass to point the wearer in the right direction via vibrations in the sole. There is also a proximity sensor, signalling upcoming obstacles. It was designed by Anirudh Sharma and is currently being tested, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of companionship. See anirudh.me. Most expensive photo Photography ■ World record A picture speaks a thousand words and, in this case, costs millions: $4.3 million, to be exact. Rhine II by photographer Andreas Gursky recently became the world’s most expensive photo when it was auctioned by Christie’s in New York. Why so expensive, the world wondered? For a start, it’s huge; three metres wide. But that still works out at over $1 million per metre, hardly a bargain. Apparently, the section of river portrayed is home to a giant power plant, so a spot of clever digital trickery was required to achieve the empty end result. There’s time for small talk and you can wait your turn in a comfortable armchair. Is this great service or a clever marketing ploy? Aalto University is monitoring the pilot project. Maybe it’ll catch on. Instead of escaping to a tropical island, why not just get out some extra warm woollens and embrace what winter has to offer, like Copenhagen’s Wondercool festival.
