don’t like art. “I want to open up<br />

contemporary art to people who<br />

don’t necessarily think they’re<br />

interested,” says the curator of Art<br />

Month Sydney.<br />

To that end, she’s put together<br />

a program that includes not only<br />

exhibits in 100 galleries around<br />

town, but also talks, dinners, and<br />

even workshops in everything<br />

from life drawing to making<br />

jewellery from found objects.<br />

Highlights include “Two<br />

Generations” at Damien Minton<br />

Gallery (12–26 March). The oldest,<br />

most infl uential contemporary art<br />

gallery in China, Red Gate Gallery,<br />

has curated this exhibition, which<br />

combines the work of 11 of the<br />

gallery’s senior artists. Each artist<br />

has nominated an emerging artist<br />

they admire, whose work is also<br />

included in the exhibition.<br />

On 14 March, businessman Pat<br />

Corrigan will display highlights<br />

from his private collection of<br />

indigenous art — it’s one of<br />

Australia’s fi nest. There’ll be a<br />

diff erent kind of art market on<br />

17 March, 10am to 2pm, when<br />

artists sell whatever they want out<br />

of vintage suitcases: their work,<br />

creative bric-a-brac, or anything<br />

else they fancy.<br />

Think that art goes down better with a<br />

drink? Head along to Art at Night, taking<br />

place in six arts precincts across the city:<br />

Paddington/Woollahra, Rozelle/Balmain,<br />

Waterloo/Alexandria, Darlinghurst/East<br />

Sydney, Chippendale/Redfern, and Surry<br />

Hills. On Thursday and Friday nights, take<br />

a DIY tour of the galleries in your precinct<br />

between 6–8pm, then head for the local Art<br />

Bar for DJs and performances.<br />

Not sure what artists are on about?<br />

Then catch a Conversations session, where<br />

artists sit down and “talk about how they<br />

work, why they work,” explains Eliza.<br />

There’ll also be talks on Art Buying 101<br />

and Collecting Asian Art, and chats with<br />

key fi gures in the art world, including<br />

John Kaldor, who has sponsored major<br />

contemporary art projects.<br />

One of last year’s biggest successes was<br />

the Art Cycle, where participants explore<br />

local galleries on two wheels. This year,<br />

there’ll be an Art Cycle each weekend<br />

during Art Month.
