don’t like art. “I want to open up
contemporary art to people who
don’t necessarily think they’re
interested,” says the curator of Art
Month Sydney.
To that end, she’s put together
a program that includes not only
exhibits in 100 galleries around
town, but also talks, dinners, and
even workshops in everything
from life drawing to making
jewellery from found objects.
Highlights include “Two
Generations” at Damien Minton
Gallery (12–26 March). The oldest,
most infl uential contemporary art
gallery in China, Red Gate Gallery,
has curated this exhibition, which
combines the work of 11 of the
gallery’s senior artists. Each artist
has nominated an emerging artist
they admire, whose work is also
included in the exhibition.
On 14 March, businessman Pat
Corrigan will display highlights
from his private collection of
indigenous art — it’s one of
Australia’s fi nest. There’ll be a
diff erent kind of art market on
17 March, 10am to 2pm, when
artists sell whatever they want out
of vintage suitcases: their work,
creative bric-a-brac, or anything
else they fancy.

Think that art goes down better with a
drink? Head along to Art at Night, taking
place in six arts precincts across the city:
Paddington/Woollahra, Rozelle/Balmain,
Waterloo/Alexandria, Darlinghurst/East
Sydney, Chippendale/Redfern, and Surry
Hills. On Thursday and Friday nights, take
a DIY tour of the galleries in your precinct
between 6–8pm, then head for the local Art
Bar for DJs and performances.
Not sure what artists are on about?
Then catch a Conversations session, where
artists sit down and “talk about how they
work, why they work,” explains Eliza.
There’ll also be talks on Art Buying 101
and Collecting Asian Art, and chats with
key fi gures in the art world, including
John Kaldor, who has sponsored major
contemporary art projects.
One of last year’s biggest successes was
the Art Cycle, where participants explore
local galleries on two wheels. This year,
there’ll be an Art Cycle each weekend
during Art Month.
