Banned by Franco for having no religious significance, then
reinstated in the 1970s for almost exactly the same reason,
La Tomatina sees the good people of Buñol, about 100km
north of Alicante, worshipping the saints in their own special
way – by pelting the hell out of each other with thousands of
pieces of the eponymous (rotten) fruit. Well, it takes all
sorts… particularly when there are 50,000 believers bussed
in to join the food-flinging fun. The resulting scenes of
red, pip-smeared revelry could have come straight
from a horror film: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
perhaps, or The Devil Wears Passata.
