words: ZuhArA YusoFF june ROLL OUt tHe FUn tHe magic masteR We chat with illusionist cosentino who is set to take us on a magical journey during the adelaide cabaret festival What can you tell us about the shoW? Audiences will see up-close magic and illusions, all projected onto screens where they can scrutinise the magic. The show is all about audience participation which means we get people up on stage, we read their minds, we predict the future. Who Were your inspirations When creating the shoW? Harry Houdini has always inspired me — my audience always sees me do big stunts and escapes. I wanted to show a different side of me so this show is all about my dexterity and personality. It's perfect for cabaret. Why did you become an illusionist? My first interest in magic came from reading magic books in the library at school — it was more of a selfinterest that inspired me. I found that I was really good at something. I'd tried sports and instruments but was never great at them; magic was different. David Copperfield inspired me to take my hobby to a career level. When I was 12, I sat in the front row at events /// profiles /// food /// drinks /// places /// sTYle his show at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. He wasn't just a magician — he was a rock star! I realised at that moment that magic was much bigger than what I'd been reading about in books. Last year my audition for Australia's Got Talent was on the same stage at the Regent Theatre. This year, I was able to stand in Copperfield's shoes and become a rock star myself when I had my own show on the same stage! hoW does your shoW fit into the cabaret genre? The best thing about cabaret is that it's a real reflection of the arts. The people there are artists from a huge range of genres — from actors to comedians and painters. It's great to be among so many talented people who are genuine artists. Kate Ceberano (artistic director) has made this year dark and intriguing, from the promo videos to the program, and I feel that I sit very comfortably within this. The Adelaide Cabaret Festival is on from 8-23 June at various venues. Tickets at 131 246. 005
