Dan Ornsby Dan has been riding motorcycles since the age of 10 and on the road and racetrack since the age of 15. Over the years, Dan has owned more bikes than could be listed on one page and his current road bike is a 2008 Suzuki GSX 1400. His passion for motorcycling extends beyond the road to the racetrack. Following in his father’s footsteps, he has been racing competitively for the past Simon Davenport Simon has been with the Timaru District Council for over 20 years, during which time he has mostly been doing traffic and transportation engineering. However during the past several years he has had a strong focus and passion for targeted road safety engineering. Steve Cantwell Steve Cantwell grew up familiar with the unsealed roads of rural Northland before attending studies at the University of Waikato in Hamilton. He received a BSocSci(hon) in Cognitive Science with an emphasis on cognitive and physiological psychology, and an MSocSci(hon) investigating the speed adaptation of young novice drivers to common New Zealand road environments. After several years in Wellington, he returned to Waikato to continue investigating young drivers’ behaviour as a Research Assistant, and more recently entering into a doctoral program under the supervision of Dr. Robert Isler and Dr. Nicola Starkey. 15 years in different disciplines, from dirt track speedway to road racing. In 2008 he completed his instructor’s endorsement and gained employment with a commercial driving school. In May 2010, Dan branched out and started his own motorcycle training school. He teaches complete beginners through to experienced riders on road and also race training. His on road training focuses on improving skills, but equally as important, defensive riding techniques. In his presentation to this year’s forum, he will talk about practices in day to day land transport activities. He will also take us on a visual tour around his patch, showing examples of ‘the detail making the difference’. His thesis focuses on understanding the development and maturation of higherlevel driving skills in young persons, and the potential for novel training interventions based upon higher-level skills to be implemented as part of driver education throughout New Zealand. Steve will be discussing the speed adaptation behaviour of young novice drivers compared to older more experienced drivers, how this is related to pre-frontal maturation, attitudinal and individual differences, and hazard awareness, and ways in which young drivers can become safer road users through the strategic use of higher-level training interventions in conjunction with community based road safety initiatives.
