The Jaycees with the support of the local merchants began their aimual invitations to Santa last year and those who witnessed the parade will remember the throngs of children who went out to welcome Santa on his first public visit to the streets of Quesnel. With the continued support of the merchants, the Junior Chamber of Commerce hopes to continue this annual event. New Minimum Wage Order The Board of Industrial Relations has issued a new order effective December 20, which embraces the sawmill, lagging, woodworking and Christmas Tree industries. The new order requires that a minimum of $1.50 an hour be paid to workers in these industries and also that time and a half of the regular rate of pay be paid any hours worked over the eight hour day or any hours worked over the normal forty hours in one week. Further details of this order can be obtained from the Industrial Relations officer at The Department of Labour, 1600 Third Avenue, Prince George. Baker Memorial Hospital and treated for cuts and bruises before being released. The sole passenger of the other car, Robert Scott, suffered cuts and bruises but was not seriously injured in the mishap. RCMP estimate total damages to the two cars at $1,300, with most of the damage being done to the car driven by Merril Telford. Christmas Tree Sale on Weekend Christmas trees willbe sold this Friday and Saturday in downtown Quesnel and from door to door in the Johnston Subdivision by Scouts of the 5th Quesnel Group. Trees will be on sale on Friday night from 6:30p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the vacant lot opposite Stedman's Store on Reid Street and in the Super- Valu parking lot. Saturday afternoon from 1:30 p.m. they will be on sale at the same locations. Also on Saturday Scouts will be going from door to door in the Johnston Subdivision selling Christmas Trees. Weldwood Up 11^ For Period To Oct. 31 Weldwood of Canada's sales for the six months ended October 31 were $53,442,363, up 11 per cent from $48,085,715 in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, John Bene, president, announ- • ced today. Net profits, after estimated income taxes, were $1,752, 155, equal to 58 cents per common share, compared with$l, 885,052 or 62 cents per common share in the first half of fiscal 1965. "Earnings of the manufacturing and sales divisions were higher than in the same previous first half," Mr. Bene said. "But those from logging were depressed by increased stumpage fees and a skilled manpower shortage caused by heightened Industrial activity m B.C." In referring to the recently formed partnership between Weldwood and Price Brothers to operate a 750-ton a day pulp mill near Quesnel, B.C., Mr. Bene said it will be about five years before Weldwood's earnings are affected by the project. He said the B.C. government recently awarded Cariboo . Pulp and Paper Company Limited, a Weldwood subsidiary, Pulpwood Harvesting Licence No. 5 covering more than 6, 500 square miles in the Interior of the province. The mill will also utilize chips from Weldwood's Cariboo division plywood plant and sawmills, as well as from other lumber mills in the area. "Demand for our products was well sustained,'* he reported. "Plywood prices were relatively stable, although lumber prices were lower than a year ago." He said a $2 million expansion program at the Cariboo division plywood plant is nearing completion and a $1.5 million plywood plant under construction at Longlac, Ont., is expected to be in operation next March. Early in 1966, the company's west coast operations will have an additional source of softwood veneers, supplied under longterm contract by the new Kicking Horse Forest Products mill at Golden, B.C. "hidications are," he said, "that we shall continue to find a receptive market for the near-capacity output of our plywood facilities, and prospects for both domestic and export lumber sales are improving." New Girl Guides Enrolled Friday On December 3, 1st Quesnel Company Girl Guides of Canada held an enrollment in the activity room at Helen Dixon School. Twenty-five parents and visitors attended. After marching into horseshoe formation the Guides started their ceremonies with the Sussex Opening. Presentation of Proficiency Badges Immediately following. Patrol Leaders presented their recruits in groups and songs were rendered by the between each group enrollment. A candle-lighting ceremony followed, wherein a Guide recites one of the ten Guide Laws as she lights a candle. Pre-Christmas Piano Recital Held Monday Pupils of Mr. CjC. Halleran entertained parents and friends at a pre-Christmas piano recital held in the music room at Cariboo Junior High School Monday evening. Selections played were chosen by the individual pupils themselves and included everything fromBauchtoBerlin, Mr. Halleran explained. Those taking part in the entertaining evening were - Grade 3 - Darcy Lazzarin, Sherry Mitchell, Bonnie Joy Fraser, Dawn Campbell, Carol Jonas, Susan Williams, Lynn McKinnon, Bob Bracken^ iSnaron Nielsen, Debbie Bunz and Ron Powell. Grade 9 pupil Marjorie Webster, Grade 5 pupils Edmund Neufeld, Terry Lazzarin, Karen Floyd, Charlie Webster and Don Bracken and Grade 6 pupil Marjorie Watt also took part in the program. OPENING BONSPIEL The Wells Cur ling Club held their opening bonspiel on Friday, November 26, when fifteen rinks were in play. The winning rink in the A event was Herb Hadfield and the B event was won by Danny Bolt's rink. From all reports it was a very successful opening "Spiel". There were no representatives from Likely and 100 Mile House. There were 30 ladies who made the trip to Wells. After the meeting a turkey dinner was served to the visitors. Open Turkey Bonspiel The Wells Curling Club are holding an Open' Tm-key Bonspiel on Friday evening, December 10, play starts at 6 p.m. and the rinks will be limited to 24. There will be three events. SKI CLUB G.A. M.TONIGHT The Wells Ski Club will hold their General Annual Meeting on Thursday, December 9 at 8 p.m. in the Community Hall. There will be election of officers and general reports. Around Quesnel Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Griffith returned home last weekend from their six-week south sea cruise. Their cruise, which began at San Francisco, included visiting Fiju, Tahiti, Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand.
