November 12 to December 16,1926, Mif proposed "Theses on <strong>the</strong> Problems<br />
of Ch<strong>in</strong>a." The <strong>the</strong>ses submitted by Mif conta<strong>in</strong>ed more mistakes<br />
<strong>and</strong> errors than any of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r reports. Stal<strong>in</strong> considered Mifs suggestion<br />
that Soviets should be organized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese countryside<br />
to be especially <strong>in</strong>appropriate. But Mif did not fall <strong>in</strong>to disfavor on<br />
account of his proposal.<br />
Mif was not one to stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern build<strong>in</strong>g. On <strong>the</strong> contrary,<br />
he made frequent trips to Ch<strong>in</strong>a. One trip that I know about was his<br />
trip to Ch<strong>in</strong>a prior to <strong>the</strong> Seventh Plenum of <strong>the</strong> ECCI <strong>in</strong> November,<br />
1926. The apparent purpose of this trip was to assist <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communists<br />
<strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up Communist Party schools. Moreover, <strong>in</strong> March<br />
or April of 1927, Mif, accompanied by his favorite student, Ch'en Shaoyu,<br />
went to Hankow to take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fifth National Congress of <strong>the</strong><br />
CCP which was held on April 27, 1927. After tak<strong>in</strong>g part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
congress, he returned to <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union <strong>in</strong> August of <strong>the</strong> same year.<br />
At that time all <strong>the</strong> students of <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong> were tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a summer vacation at Trasovka, a resort not far from <strong>Moscow</strong>. One<br />
day Mif <strong>and</strong> Ch'en Shao-yu came to <strong>the</strong> resort to report on <strong>the</strong>ir recent<br />
trip to Ch<strong>in</strong>a <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> state of <strong>the</strong> Wuhan government. Mif despaired<br />
over <strong>the</strong> wor<strong>sen</strong><strong>in</strong>g situation of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution, <strong>and</strong> his neversmil<strong>in</strong>g<br />
face seemed more serious than ever. What he told us made us<br />
quite uneasy. Everyone was quiet, yet deep <strong>in</strong> our hearts we were<br />
greatly perturbed. F<strong>in</strong>ally Mif f<strong>in</strong>ished his speech <strong>and</strong> walked out<br />
amidst polite applause. It was a very depress<strong>in</strong>g experience.<br />
Even though <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese revolution, was slid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a period of<br />
decl<strong>in</strong>e, Mifs good fortune was <strong>in</strong> no way affected. Towards <strong>the</strong> end of<br />
1927 he was promoted to <strong>the</strong> directorship of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Section of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Com<strong>in</strong>tern <strong>and</strong> shortly after that, as I have already mentioned, he<br />
was promoted to <strong>the</strong> rectorship of <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>. He was<br />
also entrusted with organiz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Sixth National Congress of <strong>the</strong><br />
CCP, which was held <strong>in</strong> a suburb of <strong>Moscow</strong> <strong>in</strong> June, 1928.<br />
However, trouble was brew<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>, which<br />
was quite disturb<strong>in</strong>g to Mif, for compla<strong>in</strong>ts were showered upon him<br />
from all sides. The Party dispute at <strong>the</strong> university put him on especially<br />
bad terms with <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Communist repre<strong>sen</strong>tatives to <strong>the</strong><br />
Com<strong>in</strong>tern, Ch'u Ch'iu-pai <strong>in</strong> particular. Unwill<strong>in</strong>g to bear <strong>the</strong> burdens<br />
of <strong>Sun</strong> <strong>Yat</strong>-<strong>sen</strong> <strong>University</strong>, he asked to be relieved of his job as rector<br />
