As one unhappy, alwaies wept,<br />

And to the walls fhee made her mone j 40<br />

That fhee mould ftill defire in vaine<br />

The thing, fhe never mull obtaine.<br />

And thus in griefe fhee fpent the night,<br />

Till twinkling ftarres the fkye were fled,<br />

And Phoebus, with his glittering light, 45<br />

Through mifly cloudes appeared red ;<br />

Then tidings came to her anon,<br />

That all the Trojan fhipps were gone.<br />

And then the queene againfl her life<br />

Did arme her heart as hard as flone, 50<br />

Yet, ere fhe bared the bloody knife,<br />

In woefull wife fhee made her mone ;<br />

And, rolling on her carefull bed,<br />

With fighes and fob*, thefe words fhee fed :<br />

O wretched Dido queene ! quoth fhee,<br />

I fee thy end approacheth neare ;<br />

For he is fled away from thee,<br />

Whom thou didil love and h<strong>old</strong> fo deare<br />

What is he gone, and paffed bye ?<br />

O heart, prepare thyfelf to dye. 6©<br />

In vaine thou pleadit I fhould forbeare,<br />

And flay my hand from bloody ftroke<br />

Thee, treacherous heart, I mufl not fpare,<br />

Which fettered me in Cupids yoke.<br />
