FOR MEN AND MICE
What's that old saying about the best
laid plans of mice and men?
Whatever, it applies to this homecoming
afternoon of football between Wyoming's
perennially rugged Cowboys and
the Utah Redskins.
While Bill Meek's Utes have acquired
their "passing personality" by design
more than anything else, Wyoming on
the other hand, came to be the WAC's
leading passing unit by necessity.
Although Frosty Franklin operates out
of the Wyoming backfield and is one of
the conference's better runners, the
Pokes' rushing attack has left quite a bit
to be desired this season.
So first year coach Fritz Shumur
turned to Gary Fox to get the passing
game in gear. And that he has done,
passing Utah's Scooter Longmire to become
the leading thrower in the WAC.
With Longmire putting the ball airborne
42 times last week, a school record,
and Fox leading the conference in
passing, do you think we'll see some
aerial artistry today?
CAN'T FAULT DEFENSE
If you haven't heard yet, it's worth
repeating: Utah's defense played well
enough to win against Arizona last week.
Best evidence for such a statement comes
from looking at the grades Ute defensive
athletes scored after coaches ajudged the
films.
Utah coaches might agree that the
defensive unit has played better. It would
have enhanced their performance somewhat
if they had scored or if they had
blocked a kick. But, the defense did just
about all the things expected of it.
Defensive linemen—Ron Rydalch, Pete
Michinock and Bob Fratto—all did quite
well. In fact, Fratto, once a South High
great, graded out at over 80 percent
which is extremely unusual.
Although it may be a kiss of death to
mention it, the defense of Jim LaRue,
Gene Epley and Jeff Fries has not been
scored on in about seven or eight quarters.
Last year the "D" went 14 consecutive
quarters without yielding a TD.
POKES HAVE IMPROVED
Wyoming's 3 - 4 record to date includes
wins over South Dakota, Colorado
State and Arizona and an extremely
strong showing in a 19 - 23 loss at the
Air Force Academy. Losses have come at
the hands of Colorado (13-56), Air Force,
BYU (17-25) and Texas-El Paso last
week (7-12).
Discouragement following the BYU
loss has now probably turned into anger
after that 12 - 7 game against UTEP.
"The loss to BYU was a tough comedown,"
said Fritz Shumur just before
taking the field against UTEP last Saturday.
"But we did have our best offensive
output of the fall (444 yards) mainly
on the fine throwing of Gary Fox. (Fox
hit 19 of 35 for 335 yards and a touchdown,
breaking a school record of 305
yards he set the week before against
Arizona.)
Continued Shumur: "The receiving of
Scott Freeman (6 for 140 and a TD),
Jerry Gadlin (6 for 131) and Ken Hustad
(4 for 31) was most encouraging in the
BYU game."
The malfunction of the running game,
even with fullback Steve Brown returned
from an injury, really hurt Wyoming
against BYU. Shumur said he would
work the team heavily to round out the
running game for the UTEP.
The Pokes' may have attempted to
perfect their running attack but it was
not effective against Texas-El Paso.
Now, they may be ready to get away
from it more and more and rely on what
goes best: the pass.
WYOMING REPORT
In the way of an inside look at the
Cowboys, during the past four weeks the
team has run out of 22 different formations.
As mentioned, the running game has
been bogged down of late and passing
has become a more predominant weapon
than most had expected.
Fox is predominantly a drop back
type quarterback, he doesn't move
around much, and he'll do little optioning.
Texas-El Paso found out fast they
could run against the Wyoming defense,
although the score (12-7) might indicate
the Miners didn't exactly dismantle
Wyoming's defense. The point is, UTEP
threw only 10 times, completing eight.
Utah, obviously, will plan to throw more
often but would settle for that good a
percentage.
How well Ron Rydalch, Pete Michinock
and Bob Fratto and company can pressure
Fox will make a difference this
afternoon. Against UTEP, and in most
of their games, Wyoming has gotten fine
pass protection.
UTAH
HEAD
COACH
BILL
MEEK
Every time Bill Meek has taken over
a collegiate football program, it has
been at low ebb.
And he has built each of the four
schools he has coached into winners.
Meek, the distinguished looking
former football and baseball star at
the University of Tennessee, begins his
fourth year this season as director of
Utah's ever-rising football fortunes.
Fast Success at Utah
Won-lost records of 8-2 and 6-4 the
past two years have reintroduced Redskin
fans to the winning football they
had become familiar with in the past.
Meek's 8-2 season in 1969 won him
WAC "Coach of the Year" honors.
Utah football under Meek is now
built firmly on a foundation of a strong,
robust freshman football program. Utah
frosh teams have not lost a game since
Meek's first year (1968) and have been
defeated but once since he took over
at Utah.
That strong frosh base seems to have
the Utes, again this season, right in
the thick of the WAC title race.
Ran West Point's Offense
For two years prior to his appointment
as Utah's 10th head football
coach in January of 1968, he was in
complete charge of offensive planning
for U.S. Military Academy teams under
Tom Cahill.
Meek put heavy emphasis on the
forward pass and installed an outside
running attack. The two changes not
only added more interest for the spectator,
but had a great deal to do with
Army's 8-2 seasons those two years.
After attaining the rank of captain in
the U.S. Army during the second World
War, he entered the coaching profession
as an assistant at the University
of Maryland (1947-50.)
Revamped KSU Football
He then spent four years (1951-54)
as head coach at Kansas Stale University
and during that time he completely
revamped the Wildcat program.
When he took over at K-State, the
team had won only one conference game
in 10 years and had lost 28 games in
a row. Meek transformed KSU into a
serious contender for the Big Eight
title and had records of 6-3-1 and 7-3
his final two years.
The next two years (1955-56) Meek
shot some life into the University of
Houston program, winning the Missouri
Valley Conference championship
in 1956. For his efforts he was named
MVC Coach of the Year in 1956.
Meek spent five years (1957-61) as
head coach at Southern Methodist University
of the football-conscious Southwest
Conference, where he coached
quarterback Don Meredith.
Five Years in Pros
In 1961 Meek moved into the professional
football ranks where he saent
five years with the Dallas Cowboys and
the Denver Broncos. He was Director
of Player Personnel and offensive backfield
coach for Denver and was an
assistant coach and scout with Dallas
before going to West Point in 1966.
A 1943 graduate of Tennessee, where
he quarterbacked the championship Vol
teams of 1940 and 1942, Bill led the
team to a 27-4-1 record. He was later
invited to play in the 1943 Chicago
All-Star game.
A native of Birmingham, Alabama,
the 48-year old Meek and his wife
Beverly have four children: Phillip,
Gary, Forrest Marie and Christina.

COMING NEXT TO UTE STADIUM
Nov. 13: USU's Aggies
Chuck Mills' Utah State Aggies, Utah's leading candidate
for surprise team of the year, invades Ute Stadium Nov. 13
for the Redskins' final home game.
That morning, incidentally, new head basketball coach
Bill Foster will host the first ever "Meet the Team" day in
the Sports and Special Events Center.
The 1971-72 basketball
Redskins, a team which
promises to be full of surprises,
will be introduced
beginning at 10:15 a.m. and
Foster will put his "new
look" squad thru some drills
for the assembled fans.
There will be time for a
leisurely lunch before the
big Aggie-Redskin football
game at 1:30 p.m.
But what about the football
game?
Utah's revitalized performance
of late and the Aggies'
unusual strength during the
first half of this season is
quickly making this the
"Game of the Year" in the L_ *
state.
Tony Adams, the Unlver- BOB WICKS
sity of Texas transfer who Best in the West?
took over the quarterbacking
duties for the Aggies last season as a sophomore, has been
given a great deal of credit for Ag success to now.
Ed Giles, a 210-pound senior from Long Beach, Calif.,
was USU's second leading rusher last season and has set the
pace for Aggie runners this season.
John "Do it all" Strycula and Bob Wicks, one of the
nation's fine receivers, were high school teammates in the
Monrovia, Calif., area and during the past three years have
done a lot for USU football.
Dave Cox, a senior offensive guard from Lombard, 111.,
and defensive lineman Steve Coupee, a San Diego, Calif.,
senior, have the ability to match the best Utah has seen this
season.
One of the real interesting man-to-man battles during
the Aggie-Utah game will materialize in the center of the
line.
Pete Michinock, a strong candidate for All-WAC honors
at middle guard on defense, will go against Utah State's fine
center, Al Faccinto, a 225-pounder from Las Vegas.
Said Mills pre-season: "We expect to be a more solid
team this year with several experienced lettermen and starters
returning."
Mills, personally, will be attempting to get his head above
water for his short history against Utah.
Since 1967, his first year in Logan, Mills has split the
four games he's coached against the Redskins. But the
Aggies haven't beaten Utah since 1968, Bill Meek's first year
in Salt Lake City.
Redskin Basketball 71/72
With Utah's 'Foster Kids'
New University of Utah basketball
coach Bill Foster has an Indian Uprising
in the making ... he hopes.
Excitingly energetic and unusually accomplished
for his forty years, Foster
takes over one of the nation's three or
four finest collegiate basketball programs
from Jack Gardner. "The Fox" retired
last spring following 18 years of distinguished
service at Utah.
Foster, a member of the board of directors
of the nation's basketball coaches'
association, comes to Utah after eight
years of success at Rutgers (New Jersey)
University.
Recognized as one of the nation's
brightest young basketball coaches, Foster
is fourth in line to assume the presidency
of the national coaches' group.
During his eight-year period at Rutgers,
Bill molded the Scarlet Knights
into one of the East's most respected
units. His record during that time was
120-75.
Two of his Rutgers teams made appearances
in the National Invitational
Tournament in New York; the 1967
squad finished third in the prestigious
NIT.
(Prior to his stay at Rutgers, Bill had
a sparkling 45-11 mark in three years
as head coach at Pennsylvania's Bloomsburg
State.)
Foster's fine national reputation; his
record in the past and his love of fast
break basketball qualified him as the
man to shape Utah's hoop destiny.
In other words, the Runnin' Redskins
are going to keep on Runnin'!
Foundation of the 1971-72 Redskin
machine will be guard Eddie Trail and
forward John Dearman. They are the
only two returnees with what could be
called veteran qualifications.
Another important factor — the development
of some redshirts and/or transfers
— could really buoy Utah's hopes
this season.
Guard-forward Scot Jones (UCLA);
center Jay Vaughn (New York U.) and
big 6-10 Mark Soderburg (Kentucky)
are the transfers.
And the new coach, with assistants
Jerry Pimm and Lou Goetz, is looking
with an open mind at prospects from
last year's frosh club.
Leading frosh scorer Tim Cockett
(17.7) will be joined by center Charlie
Whiting, guard Tyrone Medley and forwards
Doug Kline and Terry Gardner.
Foster has some more experience
available in "double quick" Jimmy
Wright, Dan Cowan, Larry Green and
Jim Sorenson. All were on the squad a
year ago.
A Super Fan for Fred Graves
If, by some gross oversight, Freddie
Graves does not make the concensus All-
American squad this fall, somebody had
better have some fast explanations ready
for Eric Johnson.
After two years, Eric has probably
lost a great deal of his patience with
the "experts" who select the mythical
teams.
But, such is the life of the founder,
self-proclaimed president and charter
member of the "Fred Graves Admiration
Society."
Now 12 years old, Eric was born into
a dyed-in-the-wool family of Redskin
boosters, anyway. His mom, Carolyn,
was once a staff writer for the Salt Lake
Tribune and now pounds a mean typewriter
as secretary for the Ute Sports
Information Bureau. Eric's dad, Earl,
travels to games with the TJtes regularly.
It became apparent earlier this year
that Eric's interest in Fred Graves and
his football ability is more than a passing
fascination.
Eric, fullback for the Cottonwood
Colts, twisted his coach's arm and finally
got permission to wear number 47
... that's Fred Graves' number.
During an art class at school, Eric
made a ceramic figure of a football player,
donned in Utah's crimson and white
and wearing ... you guessed it... number
47.
During the first part of this season
Eric presented the figure to Graves, and
the Los Angeles, Calif, senior was so
impressed he promised to be sure and
see one of Eric's games before the season
ended.
Eric is following Fred now for the
third year and was probably as happy
about Graves' being moved to the outside
as Fred was himself.
"I had always wanted to play as an
outside receiver," said Fred, "but there
weren't too many good chances to do it
until this year. As a sophomore and a
junior in high school at Verbum Dei, I
played outside. Then, as a senior, we
had some personnel problems and I had
to play quarterback.
"Jim Hanifan, who coached receivers
here at Utah for a couple of years, was
in California recruiting when he saw me
in a game. I guess he liked the way I
looked and, since he thought I could
gain some weight, he talked to me about
coming to Utah to play.
"In high school I was a real terror...
all 5-9, 148 pounds of me," said Fred.
"I had a few colleges talk to me besides
Utah. Tommy Prothbro, who was
at UCLA as head coach at the time, told
me I should go to a junior college for
awhile, to give me a chance to get
bigger.
13 Redskin Football
Eric Johnson, Fred Graves' number one fan, presents Freddie
with ceramic figure depicting No. 47 in action.
"So, at first, I hadn't planned to come
here to school. I had pretty much narrowed
my choices down to either Santa
Monica JC, or Southern Cal or Arizona
State.
"Arizona State had recruited me and
a friend of mine, Reggie Eccles. During
our senior years, I threw quite a bit to
Reggie since he was the split end on
Our 72 wagon tailgates go up, down, sideways, slideways and one even disappears.
We've got five different kinds of wagons. One
for every kind of wagon buyer.
Wagons with different kinds of tailgates
especially designed for convenience. Including one
that vanishes—the window into the roof, the gate
under the floor. Out of sight. Out of your way.
Wagons that seat four, six, eight, nine or as
MmTWV
many as twelve. If you like, our Sportvan can
even be converted to sleep up to six. We're serious
when we say we want
your 1972 Chevrolet
wagon to be the Chevrolet
very best wagon
you ever owned.
Pictured at Crown Point near Portland, Oregon are (clockwise) our Sportvan, Suburban, Vega, Chevrolet wagon and Chetelle wagon.
Chevrolet. Building a
better way to see the U.SA

UTAH TESTS POKES IN HOMECOMING CONTEST
(Continued from page 3)
In short, to win this afternoon Utah
must contain Wyoming's passing attack
and put some points of its own on the
board.
FIFTH DOWN-ISMS
"The Fifth Down," the official publication
of the Football Writers Association
of America has got to be one of the
great trade journals of our time. And,
while it is oriented to happenings related
to the gridiron, some of the best material
in the magazine has nothing to do
with football.
How about this one, which appeared
in the October issue:
Owner of crossroads store in South
Carolina was appointed postmaster. For
six months not one piece of mail left
the town. Postal authorities wrote to
inquire why.
They received this terse explanation:
"The bag ain't full yet."
FAIR CATCH
Coach John McKay, Southern Cal,
says he's tired of hearing Bear Bryant
talk about poverty he knew as a farm
boy in Arkansas, peddling vegetables on
a wagon, etc. McKay tells of his own
grim childhood in West Virginia's hills:
"We kids never had enough to eat.
Mama would cook everything she could
scrape up. We had one meal a day and
we were hungry all the time. We had a
hound dog. Mama loved that dog. She
saved things for him. We kids would
hide near the door when Mama threw
scraps to the dog. That way we supple
smart. Every time Mama threw out a
bone he'd signal for a fair catch."
NEWSPAPERS CONTRIBUTION
John Mooney and Hack Miller will
enjoy this one:
Woman's Club was discussing TV and
its effect on life in America.
"Do you think TV will eventually replace
newspapers?" a lady asked.
"Don't be silly," another replied. "How
would you get a TV set in the bottom
of a parakeet cage?"
A WINNING WAY
Jeff Jespersen and his undefeated frosh
footballers have had this week to count
their many blessings after running their
undefeated string to 12 straight games,
which spans three years.
The Papooses drew a bye this week
and will finish up the season the following
two Fridays at home against Utah
State and Brigham Young.
They're 2-0 right now.
The frosh came away, somehow, with
a 21-18 win Saturday night in Grand
Junction over an extremely hard-nosed
Mesa College team. It was Mesa's second
loss at home in six years . .. both to the
Redskin frosh.
"It was a brutal, brutal game," said
Jespersen. "We had two kids go to the
hospital, but, fortunately they're not hurt
as bad as we thought.
"Our coaches really felt proud of the
effort our players gave us. It's hard to
believe, but for most of the night at
It's a Great Day
"Our defensive unit played about as
well as we could ever expect them to. A
couple of our linebackers, Steve Lyman
and Rick Edge, played superb football.
Lyman's 40-yard interception return
early in the game set up our first score.
And a fumble recovery set up our third
TD."
The frosh scored first on a six-yard
Lyle Lavarias run and Ted Tomlinson
added the first of three extra points. Lavarias
spotted halfback Bryan Pringle
later from about 10 yards out and the
frosh led 14 - 0.
Later the frosh were caught for the
first of two safeties and Mesa scored on
a long pass to make it 14 - 9. Then the
frosh converted following the fumble recovery
when Homer Warner threw to
tight end Fred Hobbs. Mesa added a
second safety and culminated a long
drive to make the score 21-18 with
more than six minutes remaining.
"They shut off our running game after
the first quarter and that forced us to
pass," said Jespersen. "It seemed as if
we were punting out of the end zone all
night. We got the ball six times inside
our own seven yard line."
"But like I said, our defense really
rose to the occasion and played attacking
football."
Grant Gertsch, Tom Roberts and Dave
Dudley; middle guard Joe Ingersoll and
"Like I said, he felt I would be able
to gain some weight and that would
enhance my chances to play. Well, my
freshman year I got all the way up to
155 pounds. As a sophomore I weighed
165 and last year I was about 170
pounds.
"I went on a protein program that
Walt Deland, our trainer, gave me. It
wasn't too long before I weighed 191
pounds. But I couldn't keep it on, so
now I weigh about 175," said Graves.
It probably would have made little
difference the past few years if Fred
41 Redskin Football
Graves had been 6-4, 230. He's done
quite a job for Utah's football program.
Freddie has the distinction few former
Utah footballers can claim: he has
started every varsity game since he's
been at Utah. Including today's Wyoming
game, that's 27 ball games!
Before last week's Arizona game in
Tucson, Fred had scored seven TDs in
his three years at Utah. He averaged
4.6 and 4.1 yards a carry as a halfback
the past two years and he had a 48-yard
run last year against Texas-El Paso.
"I would say my two best games at
Utah were both last year against UTEP
and Arizona," said Graves. "I gained
more than 100 yards in both of those
games."
Statistics, if nothing else, prove the
worth of Fred's move to a split receiver
position this year. Thru his first two
seasons, Fred caught 29 passes for 294
yards. Going into the Arizona game he
had snagged 21 passes for 198 yards.
And that's after only five games. An
impressive national ranking goes with
those statistics.
Gene Dahlquist, the Redskins' receivers
coach who has tutored some good
ones including Ed "The Flea" Bell of the
N. Y. Jets, gives his impressions of
Graves: "Freddie didn't get off to the
start he wanted or the start we expected
of him this season.
"But now he's one of the top two or
three in the conference and we know
he has a fine potential to catch a lot
more passes. He's a good receiver because
he gets off the line quickly, gets
into his patterns fast and runs good
routes."
U Meeting Demand for Therapists
There are currently 12,000 practicing
physical therapists in the United States
and, according to an official of the
American Hospital Association, the figure
must be doubled within the next
two years to meet national needs.
Because of the increasing shortage of
trained physical therapists, the University
of Utah has launched the only college
program between Denver and the
West Coast which leads to a bachelor
degree in physical therapy. Now in its
third year, it is already running at capacity.
This year 83 students applied, but only
24 could be accepted. Program director
Dr. John Krogh says 24 students can be
accommodated in both the junior and
senior years, but he believes the number
will increase as additional training
arrangements are developed with local
hospitals and clinics.
Last month the U physical therapy
program was officially approved by the
Council on Medical Education, in collaboration
with the American Physical
Therapy Association. Dr. Krogh said the
U applied for accreditation last fall. The
American Medical Association and the
American Physical Therapy Association
sent an evaluation team to the campus
in February to evaluate curriculum, instructors,
clinical affiliations and facultystudent
ratio. The decision to award accreditation
was based on their recommendations.
The comprehensive two-year program
was developed jointly by the College of
Health, Physical Education and Recreation
and the College of Medicine to "give
An important factor in its establishment
was access to rehabilitation patients
at the campus-based University
with long-term illnesses such as spinal
cord lesions and arthritis; stroke patients;
and also those persons suffering
from less serious ailments such as whiplash,
qualifying the program for accreditation.
"Most schools don't have this," he points
out. "It gives us the advantage in Utah."
Dr. Krogh explained that the physical
therapist teaches the amputee how to
use his new limb and the spinal-injured
patient how to use a wheelchair. He assists
the stroke patient to walk with a
brace, aids a patient after surgery to
gain motion and strength in a leg, and
helps the palsied child to walk.
The curriculum is imposing. Students
take classes in anatomy, neurology, kinesiology
and clinical medicine. Other
courses teach them how to use elec
An innovation in the U program is
a summer internship required of all
years. "Students spend 40 hours a week
clinics under the direction of a registered
physical therapist. It takes dedication,
but it gives students two uninterrupted
years of education and training
for entry into a rapidly expanding
Ute Stadium Information
Rudiments of what is now known as Ute Stadium, site of ad'
home football games for the University of Utah Redskins, were
completed in 1927.
Constant improvements and remodeling projects since that
time have made Ute Stadium one of the finest in the West.
With a seating capacity of more than 30,000, Ute Stadium is a
timber and concrete structure with dirt fill. Styled in a horseshoe
fashion, the stadium contains a modern all-weather track which
encircles the playing field. The open south end of the stadium
is beautifully landscaped.
When utilized for non-athletic events, the stadium (because
of the round seating arrangement on the north end) is frequently
referred to as "Stadium Bowl."
The seats in the north end were built in 1947. A major remodeling
project was completed in 1966 which saw the installation
of over 5,000 new chair type seals.
A new press box was included in the remodeling. The functional
new one-level press complex runs between both 25-yard
lines on the west side of the stadium.
A 1946 addition to the stadium included the installation of
108 1500-watt narrow beam floodlights for night games. The
lights are 100 feet above the level of the playing field with 18
lights on each of six towers. Each tower also has four lights to
illuminate stadium seats. Each of the 108 floodlights is focused
on a different spot on the playing field.
The Utah-Utah State game in 1966 drew the largest crowd
ever to the stadium (32,438).
Utah defeated Colorado Mines, 44-6, in the first game in tht
Ute Stadium.
