Unlike conventional conservation methods, the
DAUERHOLZ process involves an entirely innovative
concept which is particularly effective:
protecting the wood right through to the internal
core. After all, DAUERHOLZ is not merely coated
with a few millimetres of surface protection
typical of superficial wood protection methods.
Innovative and forward-looking
Wood from sustainable forest management – enhanced by a
patented method – Made in Germany
15-year guarantee
Wood lives! DAUERHOLZ lives on!
Instead, it is possible to impregnate the entire
tree trunk with wax as far as the inner core. Not
even the occasional formation of cracks after
several years represents a target for moisture
and wood-destroying fungi or parasites as the
wax which entirely fills the internal wood cells
acts like protective armour.
Our ecologically sustainable use of wood as a raw material is, of course, PEFC*-certified.
* PEFC is the largest institution for safeguarding and marketing sustainable forest management by means of an independent certification system. Wood and
wood products bearing the PEFC seal verifiably originate in ecologically, economically and socially-sustainable forest management.

TEChNICAL dATA ShEET
1. Introduction
1.1 General
With the development of the DAUERHOLZ process, it has been possible
for the first time to modify indigenous wood in such a way that it exceeds
all other standard indigenous woods and even many tropical woods as
regards durability and dimensional stability in outdoor applications without
making any compromises in terms of strength. Full impregnation of
wood with non-toxic wax through to the core ensures very good hydrophobicity
(water-repellent impregnation) of the material. Combined with
the low equilibrium moisture content of DAUERHOLZ, the basis of life for
wood-destroying organisms (fungi, insects) is thereby eliminated.
1.2 The DAUERHOLZ manufacturing process
The basic material for the production of DAUERHOLZ is sawn timber from
native woods, especially Scotch pine. In accordance with a preconditioning
process exactly co-ordinated to the patented DAUERHOLZ process
followed by drying, the wood is impregnated with a liquid wax inside
an autoclave. This is followed by a defined post-conditioning process for
formulating the equilibrium moisture content and consistent wax distribution
inside the wood. The treated wood then runs through the usual
processing steps such as sawing, planing and profiling.
2. DAUERHOLZ features
2.1 DAUERHOLZ dimensional stability
The DAUERHOLZ process significantly reduces the equilibrium moisture
content. DAUERHOLZ is supplied with an average residual moisture of
approx. 10 %. Thanks to the considerable hydrophobicity (water-repellent
impregnation) of DAUERHOLZ, its swell and shrinkage properties
are significantly reduced. As indicated in Fig. 1, the water absorption
and therefore dimensional changes are reduced over the comparison
period by more than 60 % when compared to untreated wood. Accordingly,
DAUERHOLZ products do not display the deformations (splitting,
warping) typical of changes in wood moisture or only in minimum and
insignificant form.
2.2 Laying DAUERHOLZ decking
DAUERHOLZ recommends proceeding as follows:
• 5 mm spacing between planks which are 90 or 115 mm wide, 6 mm
between planks which are 130 mm wide and 7 mm spacing between
planks which are 140 or 145 mm wide.
• The base should be laid with max. 40 cm (plank thickness = 21 mm),
max. 50 cm (25 mm) or max. 80 cm (42 mm) spacing.
• The screws must be made of stainless steel.
• All holes should be pre-bored and then countersunk.
• Decking should be laid at an incline of approx. 1% away from buildings
2.3 DAUERHOLZ durability
Following initial screening tests, DAUERHOLZ durability complies with
class 1 (very durable) in accordance with the EN 350-1 and EN 350-2
standards. DAUERHOLZ thereby achieves or even exceeds most tropical
woods in terms of durability, e.g. bangkirai. Even with permanent ground
contact or persistent water (hazard class 4), protection is provided
against wood-destroying organisms. This means that there are practically
no limits to the possible applications in outdoor areas.
2.4 DAUERHOLZ appearance and weathering resistance
The natural colour of DAUERHOLZ complies with that of untreated wood.
DAUERHOLZ PUR (unoiled surface) or, on request, DAUERHOLZ PLUS
with oiled surface are supplied ex works. Thanks to the DAUERSCHÖN +
wood oil used, the oiled variant is attributed an individual colour and additional
UV protection.
2.5 DAUERHOLZ hardness / strength
Depending on the density of the initial material, DAUERHOLZ pine has
an average density of 700 to 800 kg / m³. Laboratory tests have confirmed
that strength increases by up to 30 % (see Table 1) via full impregnation
with wax and when compared to untreated wood (compressive strength
longitudinal and transverse to grain direction). Average surface hardness
also increases by approx. 30 %. The strength losses often observed
in thermally-modified wood (so-called thermo-wood) do not affect
DAUERHOLZ at all.
2.6 DAUERHOLZ flammability / fire performance
DAUERHOLZ has been tested as regards its fire performance values in accordance
with DIN 4102-1. Test results have established that DAUERHOLZ
complies with the requirements of building material class B2 and can be
regarded as having normal flammable properties. In the event of a fire,
DAUERHOLZ can be extinguished using all standard fire extinguishing
agents, albeit preferably powder or foam.
2.7 DAUERHOLZ non-slip properties
Patio decking made of DAUERHOLZ has been tested to DIN 51130 (working
areas with increased risk of slipping) and DIN 51097 (wet barefoot areas)
in terms of its non-slip properties. On the basis of the test results obtained,
DAUERHOLZ flooring can be allocated to evaluation groups R 11 to R 12
in accordance with the specifications outlined in DIN 51130 and evaluation
groups B to C as per DIN 51097 as well as displacement class V6.

DAUERHOLZ flooring – independent of its profiles – is therefore also eminently
suitable for areas with an increased risk of slipping and / or wet
barefoot areas.
2.8 DAUERHOLZ environmental compatibility / emissions
DAUERHOLZ solely comprises indigenous wood and wax. DAUERHOLZ
does not contain any substances subject to marking or toxicity. No polluting
substances or waste arise during the production of DAUERHOLZ.
The wax used for hydrophobicity (water-repellent impregnation) merely
comprises carbon and hydrogen, is very hard and pure, odourless and
tasteless, insoluble in almost all substances (e. g. water but also sulphuric
acid and nitric acid) and can not be mixed with water. It complies
with the guidelines for use in the foodstuffs industry (e. g. as cheese rind
or in the manufacture of jellybabies or lipstick). The wax melting point is
approx. > 80 ° C with the result that DAUERHOLZ does not display any wax
emissions, even at extremely high surface temperatures.
2.9 Sawing / Planing / Boring DAUERHOLZ
DAUERHOLZ can be processed using all standard wood-planing tools,
whereby tool wear is somewhat less than in the case of untreated wood.
Depending on the processing intensity, the wax content in the wood can
cause deposits on tools and machinery after some time which are easily
removed using normal cleaning baths or resin removers. Owing to the
wax content in the material, manual or automatic grinding of DAUERHOLZ
is not possible with grinding belts or grinding tools and / or causes extensive
wear on the part of grinding equipment.
3. Surface treatment
DAUERSCHÖN + wood oil
On account of its wax content, DAUERHOLZ may only be coated using the
suitable surface materials approved for this purpose by DAUERHOLZ AG.
The wood is UV-protected thanks to the DAUERSCHÖN + wood oil used
for the initial coating. DAUERHOLZ also recommends annual application
of DAUERSCHÖN + to retain the original shade of wood. Coloured coating
materials can not be used on account of their poor adhesive properties.
4. Joining
4.1 Screwing / Nailing / Clamping DAUERHOLZ
DAUERHOLZ can be easily joined with nails, screws and clamps. As a
general rule, splitting strength is approx. 30 % higher than in the case of
untreated wood with the result that joins are also possible near the edge.
Nevertheless, we recommend pre-boring the material for screw diameters
> 3 mm. DAUERHOLZ displays neutral features as regards joining
elements, i.e. it does not promote corrosion. The use of stainless steel
joining elements is however recommended in outdoor applications as
only they comply with the long service life represented by DAUERHOLZ.
Nor does the use of compressed air clamping devices present a problem
although we do recommend the use of resin-coated expanding clips or
screw nails as only these guarantee the requisite pull resistance and we
also recommend advance testing under real application conditions.
4.2 Gluing DAUERHOLZ
DAUERHOLZ can only be glued using special adhesives. We recommend
Purbond HB S309 polyurethane glue. This recommendation does not
however release the user from his obligation to confirm the suitability of
adhesives for the respective application by means of independent testing.
PVAC glues are not generally suitable for gluing DAUERHOLZ.
5. Storage and transport
5.1 Trade and building site
DAUERHOLZ is a high-quality end product for outdoor applications. The
transport packaging supplied in the factory is also of the same high quality.
It is intended to protect the products from dirt and dust during transport
as well as facilitate easy and safe transport. It does not however
represent protection from mechanical damage, e. g. by forklift equipment.
On the building site, the packaging foil should not be removed until
shortly before the products are required. Owing to their very smooth surface,
DAUERHOLZ products tend to slide inside the packaging. For this
reason, loads must be suitably secured on the truck and packages must
display multiple bindings. DAUERHOLZ is not a hazardous substance and
is not therefore subject to any type of marking.
6. General
6.1 General safety and industrial safety
During processing and treatment, DAUERHOLZ is subject to the same
professional liability association safety specifications as untreated
wood. This applies for both personal safety equipment during machine
handling and the chip extraction process. On very smooth floors (e. g.
industrial floors made of hardened concrete), DAUERHOLZ chips can
represent an increased risk of slipping (similar to that of MDF dust). In
such cases, we recommend the use of non-slip mats in the machine
operating area.
6.2 PEFC certification
DAUERHOLZ production and therefore the actual products were certified
in accordance with the PEFC Standard within the framework of the audit
performed on 11 September 2009. DAUERHOLZ only uses wood from
PEFC-certified stocks.
6.3 DAUERHOLZ recycling/disposal
DAUERHOLZ is classified as a bio-mass in accordance with § 2 of the
Bio-mass Directive dated 21 June 2001. Accordingly, energetic application
in a simple (< 1 MW heat input) or formal (> 1 MW heat input) firing
installation subject to approval is possible at all times in accordance with
the German Clean Air Act. In line with the Waste Index Directive dated 1
May 2005, DAUERHOLZ and/or products manufactured from DAUERHOLZ
involve non-toxic treated used wood and are as such classified with the
030105 waste code and 03 specification. The Waste Wood Ordinance
dated 15 August 2002 classifies DAUERHOLZ as waste wood category
A II (treated used wood without halogens or wood protection agents
featuring an extensive wood content). DAUERHOLZ does not therefore
represent waste subject to any particular monitoring processes and can
be exploited as both a material and in terms of energy.
Always use the same type of wood for the base and patio decking.
For 21 mm decking (thickness), we recommend 40 cm
spacing between the DAUERHOLZ base planks and max. 50 cm
for 25 mm decking. 42 mm decking permits maximum spacing
of 80 cm.
Please ensure surface water drainage by forming an incline
towards the wood grooves and away from the building. The
incline should be at least 1 per cent – otherwise water after rainfall
can pool on the surface for disproportionately long periods
when laid horizontally. This can encourage the formation of algae
and discoloration on the surface. In any case, waterlogging under
the base must be avoided. The use of spot supports (e.g. made
of stone or Isopats) extends the life cycle of your patio.
DAUERHOLZ is impregnated with wax through to the core.
When cutting DAUERHOLZ decking, the chips incurred can form
a slippery film on surfaces owing to the wax contained therein.
Avoid slipping by cutting decking in a separate, less-frequented
area (e.g. lawn).
DAUERHOLZ is very stable – please pre-drill decking wood. We
recommend using V2A stainless steel screws. Other screws of
inferior quality can cause discolouration of the wood. Please
use two stainless steel screws for each contact point on all
DAUERHOLZ decking when securing decking to the base. The
space between screws and the edge of decking wood should
be 20 to 25 mm while screws should be positioned 5 to 10 cm
from the end of each plank.
A sunken screw head acts like a funnel for rainwater. Water
can pool there for particularly long periods of time. Such funnels
can also swiftly accumulate dirt, algae and fungi deposits
which can lead to discoloration of the wood after only a short
time. The screw heads should therefore be flush with the wooden
surface.

Protecting your
wooden patio
Fig. 9: You will have many years
of pleasure if your DAUERHOLZ
patio is installed properly.
Depending on the respective width of DAUERHOLZ decking, the
installation join should be selected as follows:
90 mm 5 mm 6 mm
115 mm 5 mm 6 mm
130 mm 6 mm 7 mm
140 mm 7 mm 8 mm
145 mm 7 mm 8 mm
The spacing between joins where decking meets should be at
least 3 mm.
Please note that many securing systems specify spacing between
joins which is too tight and therefore not suitable for securing
DAUERHOLZ. We recommend the DAUERFIX installation system
for concealed securing. This system has been especially co-ordinated
for working with DAUERHOLZ decking. DAUERFIX is exclusively
aligned towards decking which is min. 25 mm thick.
As a general rule, the following applies: wax impregnation ensures
durability of the wood. You can however change the colour
of DAUERHOLZ after installation, whereby you can choose between
eight different DAUERSCHÖN + colours. In order to retain
your chosen colour over several years, you should treat the wood
before and after the season using DAUERSCHÖN + oil. Please use
our DAUERFRISCH brightener to refresh grey DAUERHOLZ. Please
only use DAUERHOLZ products for maintenance. They have been
specially developed for waxed wood. If you wish to clean the patio,
please do not use a high-pressure cleaner – the soft spray of a
water hose is sufficient.
Soiling of the wood by metal and stonework (angle grinding, drilling,
polishing) can cause discoloration when combined with water
(reaction between iron and tanning agents). This reaction is visible
in the form of dark spots on the wood (not only on DAUERHOLZ).
Abrasion caused by angle grinding discs can also affect the wood
(e.g. passed on through work clothing) where it can cause colour
reactions. Ideally, woodwork is performed after all other tasks have
been completed. If this is not possible, the patio should be covered
over. Please exercise care when handling lawn fertiliser which can
also contain iron oxides while garden furniture and accessories
made of iron can also cause stains.
These tips have been listed in good faith. These instructions do not assert any claims as regards topicality, integrity or exclusivity.

dAuERhOLZ – GuARANTEEd GOOd ANd
hARMLESS FOR MAN ANd hIS ENVIRONMENT
We provide a 15-year guarantee on all products
leaving our factory. Because we know from experience
that DAUERHOLZ does what it promises
to do. And because we have convinced the
leading experts in wood protection research of
the advantages associated with DAUERHOLZ.
What‘s more, we repeatedly subject ourselves
to the rules of voluntary self-regulation: although
extensive tests and quality checks have
long proven that DAUERHOLZ complies with
maximum requirements, we continually examine
its quality in collaboration with leading material
testing facilities specialising in wood protection.
That‘s why DAUERHOLZ is guaranteed good.
What is unusual about the DAUERHOLZ method
is its use of wax preservation. Wax is the
primary component of the solution in which the
wood is saturated – a product with no odour or
taste which is used as a component of candles,
ointments and creams as well as in the
food packaging industry. We do not make any
compromises when it comes to selecting the
wood: our products are exclusively made from
wood which has received a so-called PEFC*
certificate, i.e. proving its origin in sustainable
forest management, whereby we only trade
in indigenous wood which grows fast and is
not endangered, e.g. pine. Our special preservation
method attributes these ecologicallycompatible
types of wood the features which
make them a real alternative to tropical wood.
Furthermore, we offer a convincing alternative
to the popular modified woods and wooden
materials currently available for use in outdoor
applications.

GuARANTEE
Guarantee for authorized sales areas of DAUERHOLZ AG
On account of their particular manufacturing process, DAUERHOLZ products
are uniquely resistant to typical environmental factors. Apart from
the statutory warranty claims, DAUERHOLZ AG also grants a 15-year
durability guarantee (for private applications), starting with the date on
which the DAUERHOLZ product is sold to the end consumer.
This guarantee exclusively covers defects which are attributable to decay
or wood-destroying fungi as well as material or production errors. If such
defects arise within the 15-year guarantee period, the DAUERHOLZ product
will be replaced or repaired at the discretion of DAUERHOLZ AG. More extensive
claims arising from this guarantee shall be excluded. The guarantee
claims must be asserted directly to DAUERHOLZ AG and must be accompanied
by the original purchase receipt indicating the date of sale.
DAUERHOLZ AG also grants each consumer as defined by § 13 of the
German Civil Code (BGB) including each natural person concluding a
contract which can not be counted as a commercial or self-employed
activity a goodwill promise within the framework of this guarantee. In the
event of the defect outlined above arising within the 15-year guarantee
period, not only the respective DAUERHOLZ product will be replaced or
repaired but the costs directly associated with such repairs or replacement
will also be borne as well as the costs of reproducing the original
designated condition of the DAUERHOLZ product.
Our goodwill promise can only be availed of if the respective customer
has registered with DAUERHOLZ AG. To register, please complete the
guarantee card provided along with a copy of the purchase receipt and
submit to DAUERHOLZ AG (address: Dauerholz AG, Hamburg Branch Office,
Frankenstraße 18–20, 20097 Hamburg, Germany) within four weeks
of purchase. The goodwill promise shall only apply for DAUERHOLZ products
purchased or used in Germany, Austria or Switzerland.
DAUERHOLZ AG or a third party commissioned by DAUERHOLZ AG shall
have the right to comply with the guarantee claims after inspection.
Guarantee conditions
The guarantee shall only apply when the general terms and conditions
as well as the following items are observed and implemented exactly:
• The DAUERHOLZ installation instructions must be followed (available
at www.dauerholz.com or by phone: +49 (0)40 23644 899-0).
• DAUERHOLZ components which are visibly defective or damaged prior
to installation may not be installed. DAUERHOLZ components must be
inspected and checked on completion. Any defects must be eliminated
immediately. Decking must be secured to the base using stainless steel
screws, whereby the decking must be pre-drilled and the drill channel
sunk. Proper sinking of screws and/or screw heads must be ensured.
All DAUERHOLZ components must be protected during transport, proces
sing and storage so as to prevent any damage. Timely (annual) inspection
of the surfaces and repairs of minor damage must be carried out.
Restrictions
The following items are excluded from the guarantee:
• Violation of any guarantee conditions
• Damage incurred by inappropriate installation of DAUERHOLZ products
• Incorrect application and violation of designated usage of DAUER-
HOLZ products. DAUERHOLZ is eminently suitable for outdoor, soil and
water applications thanks to its unique features making it resistant to
wood-destroying organisms. Designated use of DAUERHOLZ does not
however include use as supporting components. As a purely precautionary
measure, please note that DAUERHOLZ may not be processed
in the vicinity of naked flames. For applications in seawater or salt water,
please consult DAUERHOLZ AG as regards individual applications;
confirmation by DAUERHOLZ AG shall only be binding when supplied
in written form.
• On account of the special manufacturing process, DAUERHOLZ products
may display signs of „leakage“. Extreme and prolonged sunlight
can cause the protective wax (paraffin) contained in DAUERHOLZ
products to liquefy somewhat at the surface. This does not however
impair the longevity, durability or stability of DAUERHOLZ products.
• Natural properties of wood as a natural material such as natural swelling
and shrinkage as the wood absorbs and dissipates liquid, minor
distortion and fracturing, dry and grain cracks, natural veins and knots
(not on the visible side), resin discharge, minor unevenness in the
wood as well as smaller plane knocks arising on account of the various
surface qualities of raw wood.
• Typical wear
• Transport and assembly as well as expenses incurred by any subsequent
damage
• Damage attributable to the base material used, e.g. construction errors
causing increased moisture inside the wood
• Changes in colour
• Algae and/or fungal growth on the wood surface provided that the durability
of the wood is not impaired
• Damage attributable to forces majeures (e.g. hailstones), mechanical
effects, building moisture or similar circumstances
