FAMILY ALTERNATIVES TO VIOLENCE 6 Mercy Center’s Family Alternatives to Violence Programs work to strengthen vulnerable families and to counteract the cycle of violence prevalent in our neighborhood. Through our Parenting and Anger Management courses, Mercy Center teaches over 300 women and men effective, non-violent ways for parents to communicate with their children. These courses are often the first steps taken by many parents to improve their lives. Proven Programming Our classes use an effective curriculum called Active Parenting. The curriculum incorporates a text book and videos, and is delivered during 11 weekly sessions, led by staff and volunteers. Our testing shows that students in our classes learn new knowledge about parenting, and new skills to communicate with their children, breaking the cycle of violence in their families. “I feel like a new person. I learned how to treat my children in order to interact with them in a better way. I am applying the lessons that I learned in the classes to everyday situations in my life, and I see a total change”. -Recent Parenting class graduate 20 Years of Teaching Non-Violence Parenting classes were one of the first offerings at Mercy Center when we opened our doors, and have long been an extension of our commitment to spreading non-violence in our community. Our offerings in this area have grown as we’ve recognized the need for specialized classes in Spanish and for teen parents.
All classes are offered free of charge. We accommodate the many varied schedules and languages of our participants by offering at least one day, one evening, one English, and one Spanish section of both Parenting and Anger Management over the course of the year. We also offer a parenting class specifically for teen parents. “I learned to treat my children with respect, to not yell and scream, and now they respect me.” - Parenting class graduate Did You Know? Reports of child abuse and neglect are 88% higher in our neighborhood of Mott Haven than the rest of New York City. “The most important lesson I learned is that change is a process.
