The history of the Lloyd W The Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH lookes back to a history of more than 150 years. The predecessor was established in 1857 as the “Technischer Betrieb” by the renowned shipping line Norddeutscher Lloyd, has existed in its pres ent location for more than 100 years. In 1872 the State of Bremen decided to build a third harbour basin – the “Kaiserhafen” – with its own sea lock. This lock, the so called “Kleine Kaiserschleuse”, was completed in 1 1876. In 1879 the island created between the connecting lock and the “Kaiserschleuse” became the home of the “Technischer Betrieb” in Bremerhaven. In 1886 there were 636 men employed in mechanical engineer - ing and 425 in hull engineering. In 1889, due to the constantly increasing size and number of ships, it was decided to build an extension north of the “Kaiserhafen”, along with a new lock (todays “Kaiserschleuse”) and a dry dock with a dock basin. The “Kaiserdock I”, the largest dock in the world at the time with a length of 215 metres, was ready for inauguration by 1897 and was put into service by the “Technischer Betrieb” in 1899. The first ship to drydock there was the “Prinz-Regent-Luitpold” on September 8 th , 1899. This was the year of the foundation of the present Lloyd Werft. The age of the large express liners that competed for the “Blue Ribbon” was still to come. Norddeutscher Lloyd based its shipyard in the maritime town of Bremerhaven because it was the centre for overseas trade and passenger voyages. The majority of cross ings to America started or ended in Bremerhaven. It was only logical that Norddeutscher Lloyd should use this advantageous position and in so doing it found the support of the free trade town of Bremen. On May 31 st , 1913 the “Kaiserdock II” was inaugerated. With a usable length of 260 metres and a width of 35 metres it was “Europe’s largest dry dock”. Between 1936 and 1938 the “Kaiserdock II” was extended to 335 metres. With the building of the “Kaiserdock II” the Norddeutsche Lloyd spared its passenger ships the need to travel to distant shipyards and it could guarantee excellent service under its own care. In this way they succeded to secure and build upon their market share in the ever increas ing market for shorter overseas passages. The yard made its breakthrough in 1979 with the conversion of the famous liner “France” into the SS “Norway”. This liner, with its elegant and pleasing lines, had been laying in a french harbour for five years. The order for the conversion of this old “Musikdampfer” into a modern cruise liner designed to cater to, and meet the specific requirements of a mainly american cli- entel, was placed by the Norwegian Caribbean Line (NCL – today’s Norwegian Cruise Line). The Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven fulfilled the contract in the highest quality in 33 weeks to the full satisfaction of the client. From this point on the Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven was one of the yards that set world standards of performance in cruise liner conversions. Their reputation became firmly established in the following years by some extraordinary performances. The crowning moment in their eventful history was surely the conversion of the RMS “Queen Elizabeth 2”, which was completed on April 25 th , 1987, after exactly 179 days. 4 5 After the bankruptcy of Bremer Vulkan in 1996, Lloyd Werft soon established itself as an independent company and has since secured a remarkable market share in the modernisation and conversion of passenger vessels and ferries. In addition to this, Lloyd Werft has extended its activities into the new building sector, with the hulls being built elsewhere and then towed to Bremerhaven for outfitting. This system had been introduced for famous projects such as Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun, Pride of America or lately the first two dockships for Combilift ApS. Recently and in light of the significant market development and prosperous outlook, Lloyd Werft is penetrating the Yacht business sector with one Yacht currently under production. In 2006, the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri – Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. and the stateowned BIG Bremer-Investitions-Gesell - schaft mbH became new shareholders in Lloyd Werft by way of a capital increase, giving Lloyd Werft additional reputation and solid shareholding background. Based on the solid know-how of its work - force, flexible working, persistant rational - ization, outsourcing and partnership alli - ances, the Lloyd Werft has been able to maintain competitive prices for its work. The yard’s facilities also enable it to send mobile teams of craftsmen anywhere in the world.
