Season 2010-2011 EDITION TWO
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
AFTER a trying off-season it was great to finally get out on the ground and
play some decent cricket.
The club enjoyed its best start to a season in three years, chalking up two
wins from our four matches against Highton.
Before anyone pipes up, yes we are notoriously slow starters.
Training numbers have picked up considerably and everyone has reacted
positively to the slightly challenging conditions we face this year.In a bid to
keep everyone together for Tuesday night training, we have decided to have
one session a week a Belmont Common. The Common has quality nets and a
good centre wicket, which will ensure everyone enjoys a solid hit out.
Sadly, we weren’t able to put our good work into practice after wet weather
conspired against round two.
However, there’s plenty of on and off field action to come.
Off the field, forthcoming social events include ladies, sponsors and past
players day on November 6 and the reverse raffle on November 20.
If you haven't received reverse raffle tickets to sell or buy, please see Porty.
He'll hook you up.
Cheers,
Tony Aloi - for being himself.
Dags - for getting kicked out of the Ocean Grove Golf Club for being too loud during the Grand
to crack the shits and attempt to walk to the Barwon Heads Pub!
Tim - for getting smashed at a golf day and then coming home and spewing in the kitchen sink
about 1 metre from where his lovely wife was sitting
MATCH REPORTS
1 st XI – Round 1 v Highton
AFTER considerable rain and a rather protective curator put in his two bob's worth, play looked
unlikely in our first game of the season. Thankfully, the protective one's views that we would
wreck his pitch square were completely disregarded and we sent the Heat in to bat on a green
top.
New skip Coxy ambled in for his first spell as an Eagle and after he was whipped into a drain for
four off the second ball of the afternoon by his opposite number Young, things didn't look great.
However, an over-excited Young tried to repeat the dose off the very next ball, albeit a much
better one, and was on his way for four.
Holz and Walton played and missed and generally annoyed us as the Heat scored at about four
an over before Cox struck again, taking a very special caught and bowled to have the home side
2-32. A wayward Roy then found his range to have Walton heading back to the sheds a short
time later.
Hallam and Gretgrix then indulged in some rather agricultural batting to push the score to 60.
Doggy provided some inspiring work of his own, sending a beamer four feet over the batsman's
head in his first over and attempting a run out after falling over in his delivery stride.
He quickly found his rhythm and combined with Porty to rip through the Highton batting line-up,
as the Heat crumbled from 3-60 to 6-64 in a matter of minutes.
The carnage continued as Porty exposed a clear lack of bounce to snare a match best 4-16,
while Doggy bowled well to finish with 3-23 as we rolled the pre-match favourites for 93.
Roy, promoted to the top of the order, played like a man with something important on as he
thrashed the Heat attack to all parts of the ground before tea. A six over cover-point and
numerous boundaries kept the board ticking over before he departed for 45, with the score on
51.
Skeney looked the goods with the blade and it appeared set for an easy win, until a mid-innings
flurry of wickets led to some nervous moments. The prez joined Skeney at 6-74 as Highton
finally found some yap and the pair set to work on blunting some very good bowling. An assured
looking Skene patiently waited for his ball, while Daffy seemed to have Breeny in knots.
Mercifully, Young removed Daff from the attack and brought himself on.
Dibbly dobblers were much more appealing to Breen, who avoided becoming the fifth Eagle not
to trouble the scorers. From there, the runs flowed and a 35-run stand between Skeney (32) and
Breeny (19 not out) delivered the first points of the season.
Four ducks means there's a bit to work on but overall it was great to get a win on the board in
round one.
2 nd XI – Round 1 v Highton
The defence of the premiership began with a familiar foe in the shape of last year’s grand final
opponents Highton. It was a vastly different second XI that took the field for round one, with just
four of the premiership eleven (or 5 of the 12 if you count Waco) taking to the field.
On a typically flat East Belmont deck, the coin fell kindly for us as we made first use of the pitch.
Parkesy was joined at the top of the order by a welcome returnee to regular cricket (or so we
thought at that stage) in the form of Tim Hilditch. Things started well enough and it was
something or a surprise when Rob departed, leaving the captain to do his best to bore everyone
into submission for the next couple of hours. Two more quick wickets followed as first Tim (21)
and then Beamer (1), left us wobbling slightly at 3/41. Jimmy joined me in the centre and
continued his recent good form against Highton, and together we set about building a decent
target. We got past 100, and Jimmy to 50 although not without surviving a stellar attempt to run
him out by yours truly. At 116 the partnership was broken, Jim starting the season in fine style
with 52. Largely due to my lack of scoring, Malav came in next as we attempted to up the run
rate.
This was assisted when I went for 26 shortly afterwards, and some tidy cameos from Malav (17),
Tony Aloi (10), and newcomer Nandi saw us reach the reasonable total of 172, bowled out off
the last ball of the innings.
Defending a moderate target, a good start was essential, and Malav provided it in the first over,
knocking over Dodds for a duck with a brilliant delivery. Unfortunately after that we let them get
away, as some loose bowling and good batting saw them reach nearly 100 before Gerry came
back to break the partnership. 5 runs later we struck again as Robbie Parkes’ excellent spell was
rewarded with his first wicket. Rob was again the man to strike next as Tony pulled off a
stumping, and his third wicket left them at 5/139 and we were right in it. Rob completed his ten
overs with the excellent figures of 3/46, and had given us a sniff.
This got larger when Malav struck in consecutive balls to leave them 7/155. Unfortunately for us,
this was his last over, and he finished with 3/28. Beamer came on and did a great job, picking up
the wicket of their skipper with just 5 needed, but in the end we couldn’t quite pull it off.
It was quite close, but our poor start in the field was probably a deciding factor. Not so much not
picking up wickets, but their run rate was around 5 an over after 15, not allowing us to build
pressure. Another 20 runs, or one more over from Malav and we might have won it.
Nonetheless, plenty to be positive about as Highton are a good side, and we were probably
slightly under strength. St Peters this week weather permitting and hopefully our season will be
off and running.
3 rd XI – Round 1 v Highton
Yet another season starts with promise and hope for the 3rds. Looking for redemption after
getting knocked out of the finals by the Heat last year we had a star studded line up with Pugs,
Borat and Tony Scott adding some class for the first game. The bottom oval at Highton has a
newly laid pitch that was much better than the sandpaper we played on last season.
Skipper Waz won the toss and elected to bowl just in case this new pitch threw up a few
surprises. Raj and Scotty opened the bowling and kept the Heat batsmen at bay when Scotty got
one to jag back and bowl his first victim. Soon enough Scotty got another one caught behind to
have the Heat reeling at 2/12 off 6 overs. Tony and JD got into the action soon enough, both
getting wickets early to keep the pressure on the Heat who were 4/56 off 22 overs. Dropped
catches to Tim and Scotty didn’t help the cause but the Heat still stumbled to be 7/93 and under
the pump. A late revival by their number 9 & 10 batsmen got their score up to a respectable 161
which would prove to be costly in the end for the Eagles. A quick mention to the skipper who
bowled a hat-trick of wides in one over that went for about 10 or 11 balls!
A very strong batting line up gave the Eagles plenty of confidence to chase the runs down. Borat
and JD got us off to a good start scoring runs at will early, Borat hitting a couple of big sixes and
JD spanking anything that was slightly short. The boys were cruising until Borat skied one to be
out for 26. Tony Scott came in but didn’t last long, also skying a ball with the pitch just holding up
a touch. The Eagles were still well placed at 2/55 off only 16 overs. Pugs came in no. 4 but got
bowled for only 3. Tim replaced him and tried to get things going with JD but unfortunately JD
was caught at short cover for a well made 44. Waz came to the middle with the Eagles at 4/94
off 26 overs and went out just as quick in what was the first of quick wickets to fall. Tim followed
after being bowled for a shocking 7 runs, Simmo tried hard for 15 after running Footy out for 3.
Scotty skied one to be out for 1 run and Harby got the first duck of the year as the Eagles lost
6/21 to crash and burn to be all out for 123 off 34 overs. What a golden opportunity lost.
Much more batting discipline required for next week against St Peters.
A Club where ALL kids get a fair go
4 th XI – Round 1 v Highton
Played at Lakeside oval
Title – Waurn Ponds maul Highton in season opener
Waurn Ponds 155/9 (40 overs) Chethan Raj 35, David Basham 20
Highton 101/10 (39.4 overs) (Harshil Desai 4/15, Darpan Chapaneri 2/7)
Coming in with partial preparation Waurn Ponds had to push hard to start up the season opener thanks
to fantastic support from all team members.
Waurn Ponds captain won the toss and decided to bat first. David Basham playing his first game for 4ths
after a long time and Yashu, leading run scorer for last year started proceedings for us. Bash opened his
account with a six over midwicket. Both Bash and Yashu provided what could be described as a perfect
start with amassing 40 runs in first 10 overs. Yashu perished first falling to a loose shot. Apoorva looked
solid during his short stay at the crease but hit one straight to short mid wicket fielder. Mr. Dependable
Pranav then joined Bash who was adjudged LBW to a spinning delivery dipping on him and hitting leg
stump.
Jai then joined Pranav and they steadied the ship for a while. Jai played some risky strokes and
departed just when he was looking like getting in to his groove. Brad Green was the next man in to
accompany Pranav. Pranav started playing some nice strokes and showed some urgency to get some
quick runs. However he too ended up top edging a pull shot to deep square leg who was followed by
Bradley hitting one straight to the point fielder. Manthan who was promoted up the order then provided
perfect support to Chethan Raj who was by far the best batsman for us playing some orthodox and
unorthodox strokes helping us set up a respectable total on the board. Lusty joined Chethan Raj as
Manthan departed. Lusty too provided good support to Chethan Raj rotating strike regularly. Lusty also
accelerated at the end helping us pass the 150 mark. We ended up making 155 which was quite a good
effort considering the first game of the season thanks to a hard working 35 from Chethan Raj, some
good 20 s from Basham, Yashu, Pranav & Jai.
Chasing in excess of 150 for a season opener was never going to be an easy task for the Highton boys.
Skipper Harshil who was bowling with a sore shoulder started proceedings with Manthan. We were off to
a great start as Harshil soon started to send down those wild off cutters and in swinging Yorkers.
Highton were in a spot of bother with both opening bowlers bowling to a tight wicket-to-wicket line. It was
almost as good as over for them at 4 wickets for 10 runs at the end of first 10 overs. Harshil was the
destroyer in chief who was supported well by Manthan who bowled a great spell without much luck.
Highton were never able to recover from a poor start however a solid rearguard action from their lower
middle order saw them pass the 100 run mark. Bradley Green, Darpan, Manthan in his later spell and
Pranav chipped in with wickets to help us reduce Highton at 101 before completing their legitimate quota
of 40 overs. In the end it was fairly decent effort where every one contributed with good display of
bowling provided by some excellent ground fielding and support through out.
One thing I would like every one to keep in mind will be dropping catches as we could catch only 2 of
about 5 chances thrown at us, which could be really costly in crunch games. Hopefully we will be back in
to it as the season progresses.
