3 rd XI – Round 1 v Highton Yet another season starts with promise and hope for the 3rds. Looking for redemption after getting knocked out of the finals by the Heat last year we had a star studded line up with Pugs, Borat and Tony Scott adding some class for the first game. The bottom oval at Highton has a newly laid pitch that was much better than the sandpaper we played on last season. Skipper Waz won the toss and elected to bowl just in case this new pitch threw up a few surprises. Raj and Scotty opened the bowling and kept the Heat batsmen at bay when Scotty got one to jag back and bowl his first victim. Soon enough Scotty got another one caught behind to have the Heat reeling at 2/12 off 6 overs. Tony and JD got into the action soon enough, both getting wickets early to keep the pressure on the Heat who were 4/56 off 22 overs. Dropped catches to Tim and Scotty didn’t help the cause but the Heat still stumbled to be 7/93 and under the pump. A late revival by their number 9 & 10 batsmen got their score up to a respectable 161 which would prove to be costly in the end for the Eagles. A quick mention to the skipper who bowled a hat-trick of wides in one over that went for about 10 or 11 balls! A very strong batting line up gave the Eagles plenty of confidence to chase the runs down. Borat and JD got us off to a good start scoring runs at will early, Borat hitting a couple of big sixes and JD spanking anything that was slightly short. The boys were cruising until Borat skied one to be out for 26. Tony Scott came in but didn’t last long, also skying a ball with the pitch just holding up a touch. The Eagles were still well placed at 2/55 off only 16 overs. Pugs came in no. 4 but got bowled for only 3. Tim replaced him and tried to get things going with JD but unfortunately JD was caught at short cover for a well made 44. Waz came to the middle with the Eagles at 4/94 off 26 overs and went out just as quick in what was the first of quick wickets to fall. Tim followed after being bowled for a shocking 7 runs, Simmo tried hard for 15 after running Footy out for 3. Scotty skied one to be out for 1 run and Harby got the first duck of the year as the Eagles lost 6/21 to crash and burn to be all out for 123 off 34 overs. What a golden opportunity lost. Much more batting discipline required for next week against St Peters. 4 th XI – Round 1 v Highton Played at Lakeside oval Title – Waurn Ponds maul Highton in season opener Waurn Ponds 155/9 (40 overs) Chethan Raj 35, David Basham 20 Highton 101/10 (39.4 overs) (Harshil Desai 4/15, Darpan Chapaneri 2/7) Coming in with partial preparation Waurn Ponds had to push hard to start up the season opener thanks to fantastic support from all team members. Waurn Ponds captain won the toss and decided to bat first. David Basham playing his first game for 4ths after a long time and Yashu, leading run scorer for last year started proceedings for us. Bash opened his account with a six over midwicket. Both Bash and Yashu provided what could be described as a perfect start with amassing 40 runs in first 10 overs. Yashu perished first falling to a loose shot. Apoorva looked solid during his short stay at the crease but hit one straight to short mid wicket fielder. Mr. Dependable Pranav then joined Bash who was adjudged LBW to a spinning delivery dipping on him and hitting leg stump. Jai then joined Pranav and they steadied the ship for a while. Jai played some risky strokes and departed just when he was looking like getting in to his groove. Brad Green was the next man in to accompany Pranav. Pranav started playing some nice strokes and showed some urgency to get some quick runs. However he too ended up top edging a pull shot to deep square leg who was followed by Bradley hitting one straight to the point fielder. Manthan who was promoted up the order then provided perfect support to Chethan Raj who was by far the best batsman for us playing some orthodox and unorthodox strokes helping us set up a respectable total on the board. Lusty joined Chethan Raj as Manthan departed. Lusty too provided good support to Chethan Raj rotating strike regularly. Lusty also accelerated at the end helping us pass the 150 mark. We ended up making 155 which was quite a good effort considering the first game of the season thanks to a hard working 35 from Chethan Raj, some good 20 s from Basham, Yashu, Pranav & Jai. Chasing in excess of 150 for a season opener was never going to be an easy task for the Highton boys. Skipper Harshil who was bowling with a sore shoulder started proceedings with Manthan. We were off to a great start as Harshil soon started to send down those wild off cutters and in swinging Yorkers. Highton were in a spot of bother with both opening bowlers bowling to a tight wicket-to-wicket line. It was almost as good as over for them at 4 wickets for 10 runs at the end of first 10 overs. Harshil was the destroyer in chief who was supported well by Manthan who bowled a great spell without much luck. Highton were never able to recover from a poor start however a solid rearguard action from their lower middle order saw them pass the 100 run mark. Bradley Green, Darpan, Manthan in his later spell and Pranav chipped in with wickets to help us reduce Highton at 101 before completing their legitimate quota of 40 overs. In the end it was fairly decent effort where every one contributed with good display of bowling provided by some excellent ground fielding and support through out. One thing I would like every one to keep in mind will be dropping catches as we could catch only 2 of about 5 chances thrown at us, which could be really costly in crunch games. Hopefully we will be back in to it as the season progresses.
