Dear Friends,
It is our pleasure to present to you The
Advocacy Center’s Annual Report for
2011: Creating a World that Works for
Everyone.
The Advocacy Center is committed
to helping individuals, families, and
communities create positive change,
whether it is improved educational
outcomes, enhanced employability, reduced family stresses
or more inclusive communities. Our support takes many
forms. However, our goal is always the same: to empower
people with disabilities and their families to realize their
goals and to enrich communities to be able to support and
value all individuals. Together, we can create a world that
works for everyone.
In this report, you’ll see examples of how we support people
in realizing their dreams and making positive changes.
Stefanie Boise wants to work. Her service coordinator at
The Advocacy Center helped her obtain adaptive technology
she needs to do that. Grisel Gonzalez wants her daughter
to achieve in school so she can be successful in life. Support
from The Advocacy Center empowered Grisel to be more
effective in her daughter’s educational planning, so she can
access proper educational services. D Chen learned valuable
skills as a TIES student volunteer, supporting a peer who has
disabilities. As a result, the community is able to witness
what someone with a disability is capable of every time they
see D and his friend Nick Schaertel working out at the gym.
In the words of Nick’s mom, Maria, “Nick’s involvement
gives community members the opportunity to welcome and
embrace him …. to say to each other, ‘We want you here. We
are happier and stronger when we are together.’ ”
Indeed, we are stronger together. Thank you for the part you
played in supporting our mission in 2011. We look forward to
continuing to work together with you to create positive change.
All the best,
Change
When asked what is most important to her, Stefanie
Boise replied, “My independence. I only ask for help
when I have to.” A strong advocate for herself, Stefanie lives
in her own apartment and is very active in her community.
She describes Diane Porcelli, her service coordinator from
The Advocacy Center, as “awesome,” someone who is there
for her when Stefanie needs her.
One thing Stefanie needed help with was being able to
use the computer, because available mouse-driven and
voice recognition systems did not work with her physical
limitations. Diane found a mouth-driven mouse system,
and now Stefanie regularly uses her computer. “I need it to
be employable,” she commented.
Stefanie’s next step is to work as an Advocate and
Mentor for The Advocacy Center’s Creating a Life
After High School series. In that role, she will be
encouraging teens to advocate for themselves and
to create positive change.
Grisel Gonzalez is glad that she met Maritza Cubi of
The Advocacy Center at a workshop that Maritza
presented in collaboration with Hillside Family of Agencies
and Ibero-American Action League. With Maritza’s advice
and coaching, Grisel was able to obtain an evaluation
for her 11-year-old daughter, Alenis. The evaluation
recommended a change in services for Alenis, and Grisel is
looking forward to her daughter receiving the support she
needs to succeed in school. “I am very grateful to Maritza,”
she commented, “thanks to her, I was able to learn about
my rights and the supports available for my daughter.”
With information and encouragement from The
Advocacy Center, Grisel is securing the support her
daughter needs to learn and to flourish. Alenis is on
her way to a successful future.
Providing Education Online
Webinars proved to be a successful way to provide information to people in a
way that is convenient for them. The Advocacy Center hosted its first webinar in
collaboration with Westchester Independent Living Center and Littman Krooks,
LLP. The topic was transition; 53 people participated. Our second webinar, on
Response to Intervention (RTI), drew 45 participants.
Parents as Transition Helpers
The Advocacy Center’s Family-School Partnership piloted a series of PATH
(Parents as Transition Helpers) conferences in a variety of locations. The
conferences provided tools and information to help parents work with their
children to plan their futures.
Parent Training & Information Center to Continue its Work
The United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education
Programs, awarded The Advocacy Center $524,874 for its Parent Training and
Information Center, which serves all of New York State outside the five boroughs
of New York City. The award is expected to continue annually for the next four
years. Congresswoman Louise Slaughter notified The Advocacy Center of the
grant. “I am delighted that The Advocacy Center has been recognized and will
be able to continue their programming for parents of children with disabilities,”
said Slaughter. “They have a proven track record of helping tens of thousands of
parents of children with a wide range of disabilities.”
Nick Schaertel works out in his high school’s weight
room every Monday with his friend, D Chen. As a
volunteer for TIES (Together Including Every Student),
D received training from The Advocacy Center’s Kathy
Costello on how to effectively support individuals with
disabilities in recreational activities. When asked what he
likes about being a TIES volunteer, D said, “I normally
come to work out anyway. Now I have a friend to do
it with.” He added that volunteering has helped him
develop communication and interpersonal skills that will
help him in other areas of his life.
Maria Schaertel, Nick’s mother, notes how the
whole community benefits from TIES: “Nick’s
involvement gives community members the
opportunity to welcome and embrace him. It helps
to fill the basic human need to extend ourselves to
others, to say to each other, ‘We want you here. We
are happier and stronger when we are together.’”
