Opening night gala
stand up guys • World premiere
Director: Fisher Stevens
Stand Up Guys stars Academy Award ® winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan
Arkin in a tough but touching action comedy as retired gangsters who reunite for one epic
last night. Val (Pacino) is released from prison after serving twenty-eight years for refusing
to give up one of his close criminal associates. His best friend Doc (Walken) is there to
pick him up, and the two soon reteam with another old pal, Hirsch (Arkin). Their bond is
as strong as ever, and the three reflect on freedom lost and gained, loyalties ebbed and
flowed, and days of glory gone by. And despite their age, their capacity for mayhem is still
very much alive and well; bullets fly as they make a hilariously valiant effort to compensate
for the decades of crime, drugs and sex they’ve missed. But one of the friends is keeping
a dangerous secret; he’s been put in an impossible quandary by a former mob boss, and
his time to find an acceptable alternative is running out. As the sun rises on the guys’
legendary reunion, their position becomes more and more desperate and they finally
confront their past once and for all. 94 min. See page 47 for ticket info.
How We educate
students teachers
Cinema/Chicago and the 48th Chicago International Film Festival bring more
than 5,000 Chicago Public School students into theaters for Education Outreach
Screenings during the Festival and throughout the school year.
These screenings cover a wide variety of genres, including foreign cinema,
documentaries, local productions, and international new releases. Films are chosen
that relate to the CPS curriculum, exposing students to films from other cultures,
other languages, and complex and engaging subjects.
Prior to each screening, Cinema/Chicago provides study guides to prepare
teachers and students for the content and concepts of the film, ensuring that the
discussion regarding the film can take place long after the students have left the
theater. Following each screening, students meet special guests—directors, actors,
producers, critics, documentary subjects—and are able to ask questions pertaining
to the screening. These discussions elevate students from passive audience
members to engaged participants. Students are asked to write essays on the film,
bringing their critical-thinking skills into play as they begin to look at film narratives,
construction and visuals.
The goal of the Education Outreach Screenings is to give students from across
the city and of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to view one-of-a-kind films
from around the world. Because Chicago Public Schools have limited financial
resources to provide students with field trip experiences, Cinema/Chicago
provides buses, theaters, films, speakers, study guides, and teacher support
entirely free of charge.
Media technology is advancing at an
ever-increasing pace, and the rate at
which students are bombarded with
images, sounds, and information can
be daunting. Media literacy is the
ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and
communicate information gathered from
these sources.
Cinema/Chicago’s Teachers Institute
Media Literacy Training Program, with the
support of the Polk Brothers Foundation,
is a series of workshops designed to
aid CPS educators in bringing new
perspectives to curriculum development
and classroom study through the use
of film and other media. The Teachers
Institute is led by renowned film and
media professionals and professors.
Through interactive workshops, the
Teachers Institute gives educators the
opportunity to increase their awareness
of the impact of media on the lives of
their students and to connect media
literacy concepts and art education to
Illinois learning standards.

young filmmakers support
The CineYouth Festival celebrates the work of filmmakers 21 years old and younger,
highlighting the creativity of the next generation of filmmakers.
The two-day CineYouth Festival features public screenings of officially selected films,
hands-on production workshops, and networking opportunities for participating
filmmakers. Winning CineYouth films are shown during the Chicago International Film
Festival at the CineYouth “Best of the Fest” screening (p. 34).
For eight years, Cinema/Chicago has showcased the talent of young filmmakers with
the nationally recognized CineYouth Festival. Cinema/Chicago is proud to host a
youth film festival that not only honors the hard work and creativity of
young filmmakers but also provides a positive educational
environment for participants.
Entries for the 2013 CineYouth Festival are accepted
from December 1, 2012 – March 15, 2013.
