DIE Tzaneen streek is vandeesweek amptelik 

as rampgebied verklaar nadat frats vloede 

miljoene rande se skade in die hele streek 

aangerig het. 

Die sluise het Vrydag goed oopgemaak en 

swaar reën het nege plaasdamme in die Letsitele 

omgewing laat meegee. 

Verskeie dele daar was van die buitewêreld 

afgesny nadat paaie oorstroom het. 

Die huis van Hannes en Elize Fourie op hul 

plaas, Matuma in die Laparisa omgewing was 

geheel en al onder water. Van hulle meubels 

het in die Letabarivier afgespoel en groot 

doringbome wat voor die huis was, is weg. 

Hulle was nie daar toe dit gebeur het nie en 

dié groot skok het Sondag op hulle gewag. 

Die bruggie by die Tzaneendam was ook 

Sondag onder vloed en het groot toeskouers 

waarde geniet. 

Die laagwaterbruggie by Broedersstroomdrift, 

Ledzee is ook gesluit. 

Brûe oor die Hlangana, Nwanedzi en Groot 

Letabariviere was onder vloed en was gesluit 

vir ‘n aantal ure. 

Die pad na die Strydomtonnel was ook 

gesluit. 

By Dap Naudedam is daar 132mm gemeet 

en staan die dam op 105.60%. 

By Haenerstburg is daar 129.80mm gemeet 

en staan die Ebenezerdam op 101.06%. 

Tzaneen het op plekke meer as 200mm 

gemeet en die damvlak staan op 103.81%. 

Magoebaskloof omgewing het 167.70mm 

gemeet en die dam daar staan op102.95%.

Joint operation 

responds to rain 

FOLLOWING heavy rainfall experienced over 

parts of the Letsitele/Taganashoek/Eiland area 

early on Saturday morning, a Joint Operational 

Centre (JOC) was convened by the Mopani 

District Municipality Disaster Management 

Centre. 

This JOC comprised members from, amongst 

others, Disaster Management (local and district), 

Department of Water Affairs, Mopani Fire 

Services, Emergency Medical Services, SAPS, 

Traffic and Technical Services from the Mopani 

District Municipality. From this JOC, a joint 

and informed decision could be made on how 

best to proceed as information regarding the 

flooding started to filter in. 

Bridges over the Hlangana, Nwanedzi and 

Great Letaba rivers were flooded and closed to 

traffic for several hours. These bridges were 

later opened again once they had been 

deemed safe by an engineer after the water 

levels had subsided. 

At the same time, the Olifants River came 

down heavily in flood, peaking at an estimated 

1 800 cubic metres per second through Mica at 

about 12:00 on Saturday. 

The Letsitele River reported a reading of 256 

cubic metres per second on Saturday morning, 

whilst the reading for the Letaba River at Letaba 

Ranch showed a flow of 1 006 cubic metres per 

second on Saturday afternoon. 

No loss of human life was reported and there 

were isolated cases where people were temporarily 

cut off by the flooded rivers. 

Indications are that there is a possibility of 

more heavy rainfall today and tomorrow due to 

tropical moisture which is in circulation. Mo-

road conditions and potholes which have

Suspects steal weapons, 

attack neighbour 

WEAPONS stolen from a farm in 

the California area on Sunday 

were used in an attack on a 

neighbouring farm that same 

evening. 

Gerhard van den Ende returned 

home at about 19:00 when he 

saw that his house had been 

broken into. He found his domestic 

worker tied up in her living 

quarters, who told him that she 

had been attacked by four men at 

about 17:00. One was wielding 

an axe and three had pangas. 

Almost nothing was stolen from 

his home, but his safe had been 

broken into and his weapons 

stolen. He phoned the Letsitele 

police who arrived soon after to 

take their statements. 

While the police were still at his 

house, van den Ende’s neighbour 

MEMBERS of the community are 

warned about criminals impersonating 

police officials who prey 

on unsuspecting victims. 

Provincial police spokesperson, 

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale 

Ramatseba, said the phony police 

officials target people withdrawing 

money from banks. 

He said bank clients will be 

approached by the suspects pretending 

to be members of the 

South African Police Service, 

after being shown fraudulent police 

appointment cards. 

The victims would then be requested 

to hand over the money 

they withdrew on the pretext that 

it is being checked as it is suspected 

to have been stolen. 

The suspects then pretend to 

phoned to tell him that Fritz Jacobs, 

another neighbour, had been 

attacked. 

Jacobs was watching television 

when he heard a noise outside his 

house just after 21:00. He went to 

investigate the matter, taking his 

firearm with him. 

Later investigation showed that 

at least three people were outside 

his house when he was fired 

upon. Jacobs returned fire and the 

assailants fled. 

The police, van den Ende and 

the Letsitele farm watch arrived 

on the scene. 

Jacobs found a weapon in his 

garden on Monday morning, and 

informed van den Ende who then 

positively identified it as one of 

his. 

Police were apparently unable 

to comment on the incident.

A NEW rose, bred by Ludwig’s Roses, has been named after 

Tzaneener Rita Heim. 

Rita inspires new rose breed 

RITA is fabulous. Rita Heim of 

Tzaneen is the inspiration behind 

the name of a new rose bred by 

Ludwig's Roses - Fabulous Rita. 

The rose was bred in February 

2010 by Ludwig’s and the idea 

behind the naming of the rose was 

initiated by Rita’s grandson who 

also happens to think that Rita is 

indeed Fabulous. 

Rita and her husband Julius 

moved to Tzaneen about 50 years 

ago, and Rita started her cut 

flower nursery on their farm soon 

afterwards, about the same time 

Ludwig opened his now famous 

n u r s e r y. 

Rita chose him as her supplier, 

and also looked to him for advice. 

Their friendship blossomed. 

And as friends do, Rita decided 

to visit her old friend Ludwig 

earlier this month. A coincidence, 

as Ludwig had planned on inviting 

her for a secret special 

occasion. 

Rita arrived on January 9 and it 

looked as though Ludwig’s Roses 

was hosting a party. 

Rita was asked to sit 

at the head of the 

table. She was confused 

but obliged. 

The announcement 

was made: Ludwig 

has named a new 

rose after Rita: Fabulous 

Rita. 

Rita is still stunned 

after nearly two 

weeks, and says that 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

it was the last thing she expected. 

Rita explained: “What an honour. 

It felt as though I was being 

knighted.” 

She insists however that the 

name Fabulous Rita refers to the 

rose, and not to her, although 

Ludwig confessed to her that it 

was she who proved to him that 

roses can successfully be grown 

in Tzaneen’s challenging climate. 

The rose is a soft creamy colour, 

with hints of peach and pink. 

Large, soft petals create a handful 

of flower that will complement 

any garden. Not to mention its 

powerful scent.

excitement of Fabulous Rita and 

offers warm congratulations to an 

old friend. Howard and Di Blight

Bakery still in business 

RUMOURS regarding the possible closure of 

the Sasko bakery in Tzaneen have been doing 

the rounds lately. 

Fortunately these rumours are, for the moment, 

merely exaggerated hearsay. 

According to Pioneer Foods, the company 

under whose umbrella Sasko Bakeries falls, the 

employees at Sasko Tzaneen were merely 

consulted regarding the possibility that shutting 

down the production wing could come 

into consideration. 

In the event that such a closure would be 

considered, talks would first be held with the 

employees and a strategy formulated. 

This possibility also only affects the production 

wing - the depot and delivery services 

would still remain active in the event of such a 

closure. 

For the time being, no closures are definitively 

planned and business is going on as 

usual - one loaf at a time.

DIE Suid-Afrikaanse Avokadokwekers 

vereniging se jaarlikse navorsingsimposium 

word vanjaar op 17 Februarie 2011 by 

Tzaneen Country Lodge gehou. 

Dit is 'n bietjie van 'n verandering aangesien 

tot en met 2010 die SAAGA simposium by 

die Magoebaskloof Hotel gehou is. 

Daar word ongeveer 200 boere en ander 

rolspelers in die industrie by dié gewilde 

geleentheid verwag. Voorafbesprekings sal 

weer gedoen moet word, maar probeer maar 

op die dag van die simposium registreer as

on January 8 when Tinyiko Manganyi from 

Giyani married her longtime boyfriend Mark

om marktoegang te bewerkstellig en die vordering 

met die proses. 

" Entomologie: Die ontwikkeling van ‘n 

voorspellingsmodel vir die beheer van 

avokado besies, IPM vir kokosneutbesies op 

avokados, en ‘n voorlopige verslag oor die 

vordering met kouebehandeling-navorsing op 

Bactrocera invadens (BI) in Kenya. 

Die effek van vlermuise op die beheer van 

stinkbesies. Daar gaan ook gepraat word ook 

die moontlike voordele van feromone in die 

toekomstige beheer van stinkbesies 

" Patologie: Die evaluering van deklae op 

die kwaliteit, opbrengs en voedingswaarde, 

en die evaluering van ultra-lae volume toedienings 

van swamdoders vir die beheer van 

avokado siektes en die toetsing van ‘n nuwe 

"pulsfog" masjien. 

Die formele praatjies sal afgesluit word met 

'n kort opsomming van die vordering met die 

SAAGA navorsingsprojekte deur prof John 

Bower, tegniese direkteur van SAAGA. 

Die verrigtinge sal weer afgesluit word met 

'n heerlike braai. Hierdie geleentheid is 'n 

moet vir elke avokado produsent, so moenie

THE three hospices of Tzaneen signed a 

Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, 

a giant leap for the provision of palliative care 

in the area. Edwin Motupa from Care4Life and 

Dr Petro Smit from Hospice Tzaneen gathering 

around Antoinette Schutte of CHoiCe 

Trust as she places the final signature on the 

agreement which will guarantee effective coverage 

of palliative services to all. 

Hospices sign MOU 

A GIANT leap for the provision of palliative 

care in Tzaneen took place on Thursday with 

the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding 

(MOU) between the three Hospices 

of Tzaneen. 

Care4Life, CHoiCe Trust and Tzaneen Hospice 

came together to sign a contract to pledge 

their commitment to cooperation between 

them for the benefit of patients in need of 

palliative care and their family members. 

The MOU addressed issues such as raising 

awareness, fundraising, maintaining professional 

conduct, the respect for geographical 

boundaries and cooperation for purposes of 

referrals. 

The hospices are committed to ‘sharing the 

care', a slogan shared by the Hospice Palliative 

Care Association of South Africa. 

Palliative care is an approach that places the 

quality of life of patients and their families

the prevention and 

relief of suffering by 

early intervention, assessment 

and treatment 

of pain and other 

problems, the patient 

and their families 

are viewed in a 

holistic manner in 

which their physical,

of the MOU was a 

positive shift towards 

increasing cooperation 

and thereby improving 

the range of 

palliative care services 

offered to patients 

and their family 

members in this 

area.

Helpende Hand Vroue in Aksie tak het Maandagaand 

plaasgevind. 

Dr Maryn Botha, die nasionale voorsitter, en 

Vena Strauss, die nasionale organiseerder en 

sekretaresse, het die klublede en belangstellendes 

toegespreek. 

Helpende Hand Vroue in Aksie het ontstaan 

uit die nasionale Dames Aktueel organisasie 

wat by Solidariteit aangesluit het en hande met 

die bestaande Helpende Hand organisasie 

gevat het. Sodoende het die organisasie meer 

steun agter hulle saak. 

Hulle hoofdoel is steeds om geestelike en 

kulturele armmoede te identifiseer en aan te 

spreek. Hulle werk deur opheffing en bemagtiging, 

en glo om eerder ‘n visstok as ‘n vis 

vir iemand te gee. 

Opvoeding is opleiding sê Botha, en die 

organisasie het reeds opleidings projekte op 

die been om te help om die Afrikaner volk te 

bemagtig. 

Botha vind dit ontstellend dat slegs 2% van 

Afrikaner vroue in Suid-Afrika aan vroue organisasies 

behoort, en hoop om deur 

Helpende Hand Vroue in Aksie die syfer te laat 

styg.

Aksie in Julie 2010, is vele ander projekte ook 

op die been gebring. Dit sluit in hulle kosblikkie 

projek, waardeur behoeftige kleuters 

gevoed word, en die skooltassie projek, 

waardeur behoeftige graad 1 leerders met ‘n 

skooltassie, skoolbenodighede, en sodoende 

hulle waardigheid hulle skoolloopbaan kan 

afskop. 

Vroue in Aksie het ook ‘n beursfonds en 

navorsingsprojekte wat hulle aanpak. Hulle 

huidige ondersoek is na die dissiplineringstrategieë 

van ouers van vier- tot ses-jarige 

kinders. 

Die Tzaneen tak is self reeds besig met hulle 

eie inisiatiewe. Dit sluit in die saamstelling van 

‘n databasis van alle trauma beraders in 

Tzaneen, asook ‘n databasis van werklose 

persone, behoeftige kleuters en graad 1’s. 

Die tak gaan ook hand aan hand met die 

ProGroup Foundation werk om ‘n traumakamer 

volledig toe te rus. Hulle gaan ook 

nou saam werk met die SAVF en die verskillende 

kerk denominasies. 

Vele ander projekte is ook in die pyplyn, en 

die tak hoop om ‘n ‘n dryfkrag agter die opbou 

van ‘n nasie te word.

A VISITOR from Switzerland joined hands with the Letaba Rotary 

Club and worked as a student at the Rooikoppies Primary School. 

Priska Zahner organised a function with games and gifts for the

THE Letaba Rotary Club donated a Computyper to Rooikoppies 

Primary School on Friday. The Computyper has four workstations 

and teaches learners to use a computer keyboard and to type. The 

four stations can communicate with each other via typed messages. 

The principal of Rooikoppies, Beauty Kgatla, would like to 

thank the Letaba Rotary Club for their kind donation. "The skills 

they will learn will help them, not only at Rooikoppies, but also at

EDUCARE Primary welcomes four new teachers: Cheryl Couzens 

(assistant teacher Gr 1), Susannah Cole-Hamilton (Gr 1), Stella 

Oosthuizen-Rossouw (Gr R) and Corné Perkins (Gr 5). 

THE Foundation Phase learners at Educare Primary now have much 

more to look forward to at school. Game donated many toys to the 

school recently to keep the Foundation learners entertained and 

educated throughout the day. Some of the new learners with their new

IT WAS a blissful day for the Grade R learners of Tiny Tots Pre-school 

when they graduated last December. They had a colourful day filled 

with fun and laughter. Looking smart in their graduation gowns is the

Primary School in December. 

THESE learners made both their teachers and parents proud when they 

graduated from Kideo Pre-school last December. The headmistress of

12000 voet uit 'n PAC750XL registrasie nommer ZS-BLU 

bo die pragtige Paradysstrand in die Oos-Kaap gespring. 

Bosman en Ruan was gelukkig genoeg om 'n tweede 

sprong te kon meemaak. So ver bekend is Ruan 

Hanaczeck-Kruger die jongste persoon in Suid Afrika wat

DAAR was gesing, gespring, gegooi en gehardloop 

by Ben Vorster op Vrydag, 14 Januarie. 

Met die reën wat tydelik opgehou het, kon 

die Vossies hulle jaarlikse Interhuisatletiekbyeenkoms 

hou. 

Atlete het mekaar van die eerste skoot af 

opdraende gegee op die baan. 

Deelname was uitstekend met talle items wat 

twee of meer uitdunne nodig gehad het. 

Die 0/19 seuns se 100m wedloop het selfs 

sewe uitdunne gehad. 

Die dag het verskeie hoogtepunte opgelewer, 

met 9 rekords wat in die stof gebyt het:

over 20 year’s experience in the field and is

THE new owner/manager of the "Fit Freaks" at 

Merensky High School’s gym is Jaco Hansen. 

Jaco has been in the fitness and gym industry 

for the last 20 years and is a qualified personal 

trainer and lifestyle consultant. 

He was a national and international gymnast 

and competed for Great Britain. 

He travelled for 10 years around the world, 

teaching and training fitness instructors for 

cruise lines and was involved in planning and 

setting up a number of new gyms on cruise 

ships. 

Jaco loves to help and to work with people 

and his sense for adventure made him a Fear 

Factor Live champion in Orlando Florida. 

He is also a master trainer in spinning and 

loves to teach classes where people "sweat and 

suffer…" 

Jaco is also a motivational speaker and as the 

new manager of the Fit Freaks - Merensky 

Gym, he is looking forward to teach, learn from 

and inform young and old about living and 

enjoying a healthy lifestyle.

EERSTE! Lou-Maré Geldenhuys, graad 12leerling 

van Hoërskool Ben Vorster, het die 

afgelope naweek aan die interprovinsiale 

tweekamp-kampioenskap deelgeneem as verteenwoordiger 

van die Limpopo provinsie. 

Die streke wat deelgeneem het was:

BMC matrics excel 

THE Grade 12 class of 2010 at Blue Mountain 

College (BMC) performed exceptionally well 

and were able to achieve a pass rate of 

100%. 

The learners applied themselves diligently to 

their work through the year and were supported 

by the dedicated teaching team at 

BMC. 

Due to the very good academic opportunities 

and the pleasant learning environment, 

all the learners were able to achieve the 

required levels for either a Bachelor's or 

Diploma pass. 

The class managed to obtain 80% or more for 

21 % of all their subjects. Kevin Delsouiller 

achieved four distinctions and Rebekah Peniel 

achieved three distinctions. 

"Well done for a very successful and blessed 

year. We wish the 2011 BMC Grade 12 group 

every success and blessing for their final year at

TZANEEN Ringbalklub se dames span het uitstekend presteer deur verlede jaar tydens die klubkampioenskap as die top 

span in Suid Afrika aangewys te word. Die klub is ook as die beste klub in SA aangewys en het daarna in November

Mile in March 

START unpacking those bathing suits and 

swimming goggles because it is almost time for 

the annual Ebenezer Mile. 

The popular Ebenezer Mile will be held on 

March 20. 

The venue, as always, will be the yacht club 

at Ebenezer Dam. 

There will once again be the popular Mile 

swim with races for males and females, each 

with three separate age categories and generous 

prizes. A 3 000m race will also be 

held.

Marathon klub skop 2011 af 

DIE Tzaneen Marathon Klub het op 11 Januarie 

met ‘ n komitee vergadering afgeskop. 

Die klub het verskeie projekte wat aangepak 

gaan word. Een hiervan is om wedlope aan te 

bied. 

Die eerste daarvan op 9 April nl die Tzaneen 

om die Dam 4-in-1. Dit sluit in die 50km ultra 

om die dam, 'n 21,1km, 'n 10km en 'n 5km 

wedloop. 

Die maak van advertensie pamflette is al in 

proses sodat daar vroegtydig met die bekendmaking 

van die wedlope in die provinsie, 

asook aangrensende provinsies, begin kan 

word. 

Die volgende stel wedlope word op 3 

September aangebied, maar meer daaroor sal 

in 'n later stadium bekend gemaak word. Die 

wedlope word natuurlik onder die reëls van 

ASA en die Limpopo provinsie aangebied. 

Nog 'n projek wat vanjaar baie aandag gaan 

geniet is die bou van 'n klubhuis. Die komitee 

en lede van die klub het al verlede jaar, tydens 

die algemene jaarvergadering, in beginsel 

goedkeuring gegee vir die bou van 'n klub-

Die kompetisie vind weer eens 

op die plaas, Bangani by die bekende 

Manjelaandam op Mooketsi 

plaas. 

Dié dam is nou 100% vol en 

slegs 300 kaartjies is beskikbaar. 

‘n Halwe bees en ‘n Extreme 

koelboks ter waarde van R4 000 

sal aan die hengelaar gaan wat die 

swaarste kurper vang. 

Daar sal pryse vir die eerste 20 

swaarste kurpers wees. Verskeie 

gelukkige trekkings sal ook na 

afloop van die kompetisie plaasvind. 

Die persoon moet teenwoordig 

wees om hiervoor in aanmerking 

te kom. 

Slegs kurpers sal geweeg word. 

Manjelaandam se oewer is tans 

mooi skoon en daar kan enige 

plek reg rondom gehengel word. 

Die dam is ongeveer 30 km 

vanaf Modjadjiskloof. Daar word 

vanaf die Modjadjiskloofpad 

afgedraai op die R81 Giyanipad 

huis. Die terrein is reeds geïdentifiseer en die 

planne is byna klaar. Hulle kort nog net ‘n paar 

handtekeninge om dit goedgekeur te kry en 

kan hulle met die bouwerk begin. 

Die winste wat uit die aanbied van die 

wedlope verkry word, asook skenkings en 

borge sal vir die doel aangewend word. 

Almal wat belangstel om by die klub aan te 

sluit, kan met Nick Serfontein by 082 554 7690 

kontak maak om ‘n lisensie nommer te bekom. 

Die jaarfooi is R150 per persoon. 

Die Saterdag oggend "club runs" het op 15 

Januarie afgeskop, maar as gevolg van die baie 

reën is dit vir die dag gekanselleer. Hopelik sal 

die afskop die Saterdag kan begin. 

Die wegspringplek is by Hoërskool Ben 

Vorster en dit begin nou, in die somer, om 

05:00 vir 05:15. ‘Moet nie bekommerd wees 

dat hulle vir u gaan weghardloop nie, want 

daar word voorsiening gemaak vir ervare hardlopers 

sowel as beginners.’ 

Indien daar nog verdere navrae is, kan dit 

aan Christie Bouwer by 083 667 7709 gerig 

word.

junior of dames afdeling nie. Slegs 

twee visstokke per hengelaar toegelaat. 

Almal wat by die inskrywingspunt 

in gaan moet betaal. Geen 

nie-hengelaars of gaste word toegelaat 

nie. Geen bote of kanos 

word toegelaat nie. 

Slegs vars kurpers en wat tipies 

van dié dam is sal geweeg word.
