BIBLIOGRAPHY OF
BRITISH AND
AMERICAN TRAVEL
IN ITALY TO i860
For three hundred years it was expected of the educated Briton
that he should spend some time on the continent of Europe, at
best to absorb its civilizing influence, at worst to keep pace with
fashion or to convince himself that home, after all, was best.
The Italian part of the tour was by far the most important. The
traveller expected to spend at least ten months in the peninsula
and to visit all its historic cities, from the Alps to Rome and
Naples. After the downfall of Napoleon the travelling British
outnumbered all others combined. They were now joined by
tourists from America, enthusiastic visitors who viewed the Old
World with clear eyes and fresh minds.
The literary record of these three centuries of travel is of
uneven quality. It has never been fully exploited or even assessed.
This bibliography attempts to record any work which could
provide the student of social history with valuable source material.
It includes first-hand accounts of Italy by travellers from Great
Britain and by European authors writing in English; guidebooks;
the more important English translations of similar works
written in other languages; and some references to diaries, letters
and journals published in autobiographies and elsewhere.
A Supplement to The Oxford
English Dictionary
Volume II: H-N
Edited by R. W. Burchfield
This second volume of the Supplement to the O.E.D. contains about 13,000 main
words divided into some 22,000 senses. There are a little under 8,000 defined
combinations within the articles and just over 5,000 undefined combinations. The
illustrative quotations number 125,000. It replaces the corresponding part o the
1933 Supplement, and it continues the record of the English language in the last
hundred years. The Supplement will be completed in two further volumes, and it is
hoped to issue them at intervals of not more than three years. £22
A Bibliography of George Berkeley,
Bishop of Cloyne
His Works and His Critics in the Eighteenth Century
Geoffrey Keynes
This is the first of the Soho Bibliographies to appear since O.U.P. took over this
distinguished series from Hart-Davis MacGibbon in 1975. It comprises full
bibliographical descriptions of every edition published in Berkeley's lifetime of all
the major and minor works, an historical introduction, and clear summaries of the
complicated publishing history of Berkeley's work. £12
Gerard Manley Hopkins
A Comprehensive Bibliography
Tom Dunne
This bibliography, more comprehensive than any hitherto published, fills a
recognized gap in the bibliography of English literature. It provides a complete list
of all Hopkins's writings, including much new material, with full bibliographical
descriptions of primary works. Illustrated £17-50
Early Children's Books and their
Illustration
Gerald Gottlieb
This book shows by word and by picture how and where children's literature
originated and which kinds of stories were chosen for children and by children over
the centuries. 'A very handsome volume and like so many of the sources it
reproduces, a constant pleasure to read.'—The Times Literary Supplement £15
THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY. Offers of papers to be read before the Society and inquiries
as to British or Foreign Membership should be directed to R. J. ROBERTS, The Bodleian Library, Oxford
OXi 3BG; as to American Membership, to W. H. BOND, Harvard College Library, Cambridge, Mass.
Correspondence concerning The Ubrary and offers of contribution! should be directed to the Editor,
PETER DAVEON, Department of English, St. David's University College, Lampeter, Cardiganshire
SA48 7ED. A list of the publications of the Society may be obtained on application by letter to the
Secretary of the Bibliographical Society, at The Bodleian library, Oxford OXi 3BG, to whom also
members should write for any books they wish to buy. British and Foreign subscriptions should be sent
to the Society's Hon. Treasurer, R. A. CHRISTOPHERS, The British Library, London WCiB 3DG;
American subscriptions to FRANKLIN B. WILLIAMS, Jr., 724 N. Emerson St., Arlington, Virginia 13203.
The Joint Honorary Secretaries of the Bibliographical Society are: R. J. ROBERTS, The Bodleian
Library, Oxford OXi 3BG, MRS. MTRJAM FOOT, Department of Printed Books, The British Library,
Great Russell Street, London WCiB 3DG.
Prospective contributors are advised that there is a considerable number of articles awaiting publication.
The publication of long articles is particularly likely to be subject to delay. Owing to sharply
rising costs it has now become necessary for a portion of the cost of resetting authorial changes made
at the proof stage to be charged to contributors, should these changes be deemed by the editor to be
unreasonable. Articles have been tentatively allocated to issues up to March 1978.
BOOKS FOR REVIEW should be sent to PETER DAVBON, Department of Fngiiih, St. David's
University College, Lampeter, Cardiganshire SA48 7ED. Publishers and others are, however, requested
to note that the space in The Library available for reviews is small, and that only books of a definitely
bibliographical character can be noticed fully. Brief, mainly descriptive notes will be published of all
relevant books received which cannot be given a full-length review. The Library does not deal with
the technique of modern library administration.
ADVERTISEMENTS. Inquiries should be addressed to M. J. O'DONOCHUB, Department of Printed
Books, The British Library, London WCiB 3DG.
SUBSCRIPTIONS. It is now possible for members paying the standard rate of United Kingdom
income tax and not already trying relief on their subscriptions to pay subscriptions by a seven-year
covenant, thus enabling the Society to recover the income tax paid by the member. Details and forms
of deed of covenant are available from the Hon. Treasurer, British Library, London WCiB 3DG.
