Dear students, partners, supporters and friends of the SCE, The SCE looks back on ten successful years of teaching entrepreneurship and establishing a start-up culture at Munich University of Applied Sciences. It was an exciting and eventful anniversary year, as 2012 showed the way forward into our next decade. Having been one of three German institutions recognised as start-up universities in the summer 2011, the principal focus in 2012 was on pursuing and achieving our ambitious goals in promoting start-ups. I am extremely pleased at how many of our objectives we were able to achieve this year. In the area of qualification, we are now incorporating several new and unprecedented teaching techniques into our educational concept. Thus as of recently, real projects are being systematically woven into curricula and completion criteria, which provide networking opportunities for professors, businesses and students. page 6 Students enrolled at MUAS are thus being forged into entrepreneurial leaders by increasing the level of practice-oriented, interdisciplinary teamwork and solution-focused project work in seminars and internships. Our new Innovation Camp compact course held up in the mountains is a great success as well. The year 2012 was a year of superlatives in terms of recognition, successes and funding for our start-up support programme. Three start-up teams received EXIST start-up grants, and two received research transfers. Two start-ups received co-financing from the High-Tech Start-up Fund, while some teams found private investors. In addition, all of our teams got a new facility at our own university incubator at Lothstrasse 21!
In the area of research, SCE and MUAS jointly hosted the 18th International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation, attended by more than 200 leading international researchers, practitioners and decision makers. And we look forward to many other exciting activities. With EU support we established a Europe-wide ‘teachthe-teacher‘ programme for entrepreneurship professors, in collaboration with five international partners. Over the next few years we will thus be playing a role in shaping European entrepreneurship teacher training in specific ways. Our regional network is very important to us. Accordingly, we will be expanding our joint activities with the Social Entrepreneurship Academy, which in 2012 was named “Location of the Year” in the Germany – Land of Ideas competition, together with our three Munich university partners. page 7 Our joint certificate programme and Global Entrepreneurship Summer School are key drivers of innovation. All these achievements, successes and awards would not have been possible without you! All of you contributed to our success, as course participants, corporate partners, start-up founders, sponsors, professors and donors. We thank you for your interest, support and commitment, and look forward to working on many more exciting projects with you. Klaus Sailer and the SCE team FOREWORD
