City Manager WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS REPORT FEBRUARY 22, 2013 • Mayor Albers presented the Sallie Jones Elementary “A Leader In Me Lighthouse School” proclamation at a student assembly on February 15. Council Members Cavanaugh, Devine and Freeland, Police Chief, School Resource Officers along with Charlotte County School Board Commissioners Miller, Vincent and Swift participated in the ceremony. • Now that final accounting has been completed, approximately $12,000 will be donated for the Veterans Fountain project at Laishley Park from proceeds left over after all invoices are paid for the 125 th City Anniversary celebration. Vice Mayor Keesling chaired the event committee. • Based on the most recent financial projections of Infrastructure Sales Surtax (ISS) revenues and expenditures through December 31, 2014, approximately $1 million will be available for previously unfunded projects. City Council prioritized the following additional projects be undertaken: Public Works/Utilities Campus roof renovation Citywide fleet/equipment needs Laishley Park drainage & irrigation Corto Andre/Boca Grande drainage Council consensus was to complete the remaining harborwalk improvements (Gilchrist to Fishermen’s Village) as a total project if the ISS program gets extended beyond 2014. • The City will not pursue institution of a fire service fee based on discussion at the February 20 Council meeting. Charging such a fee to religious institutions, non profits and those homestead property owners currently exempt from paying property taxes under state law did not outweigh the costs to enact such a fee, the negative impact it would have on current statutorily exempted properties and would have resulted in a reduced incentive for properties to annex into the City. • City Council approved a lease agreement with the Charlotte County YMCA to continue management of the Bayfront Center through March 2015, with an opportunity for two, one year renewals. Included in the agreement are plans to initiate a comprehensive sailing program for youth, adults and those with special needs. The “Y” plans to partner with the Boaters Alliance, TEAM Punta Gorda and consulting services from Englewood Sailing associates to bring programs to Punta Gorda. More announcements will be forthcoming as the sailing initiative evolves. • The Punta Gorda Historical Mural Society dedicated the first of four murals depicting historical sports memorabilia at the Punta Gorda Club. The sculling mural can be seen as you drive along US 41. Mayor Albers, Council Members Freeland, Cavanaugh & Devine, and City Manager were in attendance. • Reminder - City will be assisting our community with a Spring Clean-Up Event. Code Compliance will provide a dumpster for public use at Lot# 82 on Ida Avenue. This FREE service will be available February 25 - March 18, 2013. Please take advantage of this event by discarding all rubbish, debris and non-hazardous materials. No appliances, concrete, paints or chemical please!
