Winter/Spring 2012

“Yoga aims at controlling the
mind and its modifications. Yoga is a
perfect practical system of self-control.
It is an exact science. It can help
you attain healthy and flexible body
and mind, ethical perfection, perfect
concentration and serenity of mind.
“Yoga is eternal life in the soul or
spirit. Yoga transmutes a person
into divinity. Yoga brings a message
of hope to the forlorn, joy to the
depressed, strength to the weak and
knowledge to the ignorant. Yoga is
the secret key to opening the realms of
eternal bliss and deep, abiding peace. “
- Swami Sivananda
“Tasmaat Yogi Bhava!” -Therefore, be
Thou a Yogi! -Bhagavad Gita
Swami Sivananda
1887 – 1963
One of the greatest saints of modern times, and the
strength behind the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers,
Swami Sivananda’s teachings are a synthesis of all
the formal paths of yoga. He trained many exceptional
disciples in yoga and Vedanta — among
them, Swami Vishnudevananda, whom he sent to
the West in order to spread the teachings of yoga.
He authored many books on Yoga and Vedanta.
Swami Vishnudevananda
1927 – 1993
A disciple of Swami Sivananda and founder of the International
Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, he is a world
renowned authority on Hatha and Raja Yoga and author of
‘The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga’ and ‘Meditation
and Mantras’. Swamiji synthesized the ancient wisdom
of yoga into five points that could be incorporated into
a modern lifestyle to provide the foundation for healthy
living.

February 20, Mahasivaratri - Celebrated
at the Yoga Ranch, see website for
details www.sivananda.org/yogaranch
Join us on this special occassion for an all
night workshop for Lord Siva, the aspect
of the Divine which destroys the old and
negative to make way for new creation.
We will celebrate with pujas and Akhanda
Kirtan (continuous chanting) of “Om Namah
Sivaya” and end with a feast at 6am.
What is Mahasivaratri?
Sivaratri, ‘the night of Siva’, falls on the
13th or 14th day of the dark half of Phalgun
(February-March). This is a festival in honor
of Lord Siva who was married to Parvati on
this day. Ceremonies include a strict fast,
an all night vigil, and worship of the Siva
Lingam by washing it every three hours with
milk, honey, rose water, etc. whilst chanting
of the mantra Om Namah Sivaya continues.
