Upcoming Nonprofit Events in North County

At Interfaith Community Services, we know
there is amazing work for good being done every
day right here in the towns and neighborhoods
of North County. This work is being done by
hundreds of nonprofit organizations, by faith
communities, and even by for-profit businesses
who want to utilize their resources to make a
positive difference in people’s lives.
We think this is real news, and we think it isn’t
reported often enough in mainstream media
outlets, so we wanted to create a publication
dedicated to putting these stories front and
center.
We’ve also noticed lots of people aren’t aware
of the resources that exist for getting help.
Chances are you know a family struggling to
make ends meet, or a senior fighting to get by
on a tiny, fixed income. Or perhaps you know a
person suffering from mental illness, addiction,
or disability. Maybe you are that person in
need. If so, we wanted to create a resource that
would provide information about where and
how people can get the help they need.
Lastly, we know from over 30 years worth of
experience that North County is filled with
incredibly generous
people who want to give
back. So we also wanted
to create a resource that
would inspire people to
get involved in great, local
causes.
We tried to imagine a publication that would
begin to address these needs, and this is what
we came up with: Welcome to the Interfaith
Community Connector, a monthly newsmagazine
dedicated to the good being done in
North County.
Interfaith publishes this little paper, but as
you’ll soon discover, it isn’t all about us. We see
the Community Connector as a collaborative
space for a growing partnership that is brewing
among hundreds of nonprofits, congregations,
and businesses throughout North County, all
joining together to strengthen our community.
We think the stories and opportunities coming
Relocating Recovery
Over the past 16 years, Escondido Community
Sobering Services has helped change the lives of
many individuals struggling with alcohol and/or
drug problems.
Now, though, the program is in jeopardy. A collaboration
by center operator Interfaith Community
Services and Tri-City Medical Center to
relocate the center from its current location to a
site along State Route 78 fell through in April. Interfaith
now faces an Aug. 15 deadline from the
city of Escondido to vacate its present location
at 401 N. Spruce St. in Escondido.
Unless Tri-City, or another partner, or the community
as a whole steps forward quickly with a
viable site for the center, a very real possibility
exists that the program will end in August, at
least temporarily, said Craig Jones, associate director
for Interfaith Community Services.
“The question for the citizens of North County
is whether this program is worth it for them,”
stated Jones. “Having people not on the street,
troubling families and businesses, having a place
to go in a safe, secure setting with the advantage
of engagement so they can solve their addiction
challenge: Is it worth it to the community?”
Residents at ECSS gather for weekly house meeting
After 16 years, Escondido Community Sobering Services
is searching for a new home by Jeff Frank
It was certainly worth it for Escondido resident
Lori Neil, 42. Neil was in pretty dire straits when
she checked into the center in December 2008.
Eighteen years of consistent meth use left her
carrying about 110 pounds on her 5-foot-7
frame. She was practically bald, with just the
remnants of a bad Mohawk haircut on her scalp.
Her cheeks were hollow and her teeth were all
missing.
“I looked like somebody out of a concentration
camp,” Neil recalled.

On probation, Neil was under orders to find a
residential treatment program after deliberately
failing three drug tests in a cry for help. Lacking
financial resources, she was turned away by several
programs. Then her parole officer suggested
the Escondido sobering center.
Interfaith Community Services opened ECSS
in July 1997 in conjunction with the city of Escondido,
the police department, Palomar Medical
Center and The Fellowship Center, with additional
funding from the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development.
The design was to provide police a place to drop
off intoxicated individuals rather than booking
them into the Vista Detention Facility or taking
them to the Palomar Medical Center emergency
room. A little more than a year later, Interfaith
received a large grant from HUD that helped
fund an expansion of the Spruce Street building
to house a shelter and residential substanceabuse
rehabilitation program.
In the years since, thousands of individuals have
“slept it off” on one of the center’s 10 sobering
mats, while many more have completed the rehab
program. Savings to the city of Escondido, its
police department and Palomar Medical Center
have been substantial.
In 2009, ICS compiled a cost-value estimate of
the sobering center and calculated a savings to
the community of at least $615,000 for the year.
Police annually bring more than 100 intoxicated
individuals to the sobering mats. A similar number
of inebriated patients are released to the
center from the Palomar emergency room. More
than 900 individuals used ECSS services in 2012,
with 110 participating in the rehabilitation program
during the 2011-12 fiscal year.
“If we could take everyone (intoxicated) to the
sobering center, we would be saving a lot of time
and money,” Escondido Police Capt. Mike Loarie
said in an interview earlier this year.
The center was there when Neil needed it. After
the suggestion from her parole officer, Neil
spoke with case manager Kimberly Platt.
“I didn’t want her to be rejected one more time,”
said Platt, who opened the door of the center to
Neil, who made the best of her new opportunity.
Moving into a room with eight other women, Neil
dove right in to the social-model rehabilitation
program based on the 12-step tradition. Daily
sobriety meetings are mixed with meditation
sessions, anger management, and relapse-prevention
classes, sessions
on spirituality, hourlong
walks and other recreation
activities. Each resident is
also responsible for doing
chores at the center.
Neil is one of many successful
graduates of ECSS, having determined
early in her stay that that “I’m going to suck the
life out of this program for all it’s worth.”
That she did. She rebuilt her self-esteem, took
advantage of job search and employment skills
classes and eventually applied for and received
a grant that allowed her to fulfill a lifelong desire
to be a truck driver. She completed driving
school in December 2009. Four months later she
was hired by NK Towing in Escondido as a tow
truck driver, earning rave reviews from her boss.
“She’s just perfect in every which way,” said
Amir Iravani, owner of NK Towing and Roadside
Services, Inc. in a 2012 interview. “Customers
love her. She’s very efficient, very professional,
always on time, always asking to do something
extra.” (Neil was laid off in mid-April when a
background check turned up some unresolved
issues from her days as a meth addict. She anticipates
being hired back when the court issues
are cleared.)
“The purpose of the program is to give clients
the skills and ability to establish and maintain
long-term sobriety,” said Patti Hamic-Christensen,
program manager for addiction and recovery
services at Interfaith. “The counterpart is the sobering
mats meant to help people become clean
and sober so they can make better decisions for
choosing their lifestyle.”
Interfaith has sought a new site for the center
for nearly two years. The city of Escondido requested
that that the Spruce Street building be
vacated as far back as 2011, when there was talk
of building a minor-league baseball stadium in
the area.
Interfaith
Communty Connector
That deadline was extended after the stadium
project fell through, most recently to Aug. 15,
giving ICS more time to find another location for
the program. But the city still wants to use the
land on which the center is located to help spur
economic and business
development
in the area.
Thousands of individuals
have “slept it off” on one
of the center’s 10 sobering
mats, while many more have
completed the rehab program.
Interfaith hopes to
find a site for a new
center somewhere
between Escondido
and Oceanside, allowing police officers and sheriff’s
deputies from all of North County to transport
individuals arrested for alcohol and drug
intoxication. It would also provide better access
to the Vista Jail, where 13,859 people were
booked for drug and alcohol related charges in
2012. Released inebriates could more easily be
transported to the sobering center and its accompanying
counseling, perhaps helping some
of those individuals begin a journey to sobriety,
Jones said.
Without a new location, Interfaith would have no
choice but to close the center in August, leaving
no sobering mat option in North County. “(Intoxicated
individuals) would wind up on corners, in
jails and hospitals and all the places you don’t
want to see them around,” commented Patti
Hamic-Christensen, Manager of ECSS. “There are
a lot of people whose journey to recovery started
here in all walks of life. You could probably
say thousands.”
Neil is one.
“I have nothing but good to say about them. I
believe ECSS gave me the foundation to change
my life. I can’t imagine the city without it only
because it has been here for so long,” she said.
“(Without it) I would have been back in jail, definitely,
and back on the streets.”
‘Ways to
Work’ offers
opportunities
For Car
ownership
by Suzanne Colbry
Imagine life without a car. How would you get
to work? If you have kids, how do you get them
to school? How do you manage the many of the
day-to-day tasks we tend to take for granted,
like grocery shopping or family visits?
For many of the families who come to the
Community Resource Center in Encinitas, this is
a reality. But Ways to Work, a national program
providing affordable auto loans to low-income
individuals, is now available in North County
through Community Resource Center. Ways to
Work provides qualifying individuals with the
keys to a car, and keys to a better life.
“This program is a game changer for working
individuals trying to make it in our community,”
says Senior Director of Client Services, Filipa
Rios. “Owning a car not only opens the door
to better work-related opportunities, but less
time on the bus also means more time with
family. Community Resource Center is thrilled
about being one of the newest agents for Ways
to Work.”
Community Resource Center is the only North
County agency offering the nationwide Ways
to Work program, which provides eligible
individuals with affordable automobile loans,
referrals to low-cost insurance, financial
literacy education, credit repair, and other
services. Beyond connecting working families
with affordable loans, the Ways to Work
program provides supportive services that
help ensure loan recipients have the tools to
succeed. “It’s one thing to qualify someone
for a loan, and another thing to make sure that
the person receiving the loan understands the
responsibility that goes with it,” explains Rios.
“We require loan recipients to attend financial
education classes, and meet regularly with
a loan manager to make sure they prioritize
expenses and make payments on time.”
‘Ways to Work” client receives key to her new car
Local employers are encouraged to have
their Human Resource departments contact
Community Resource Center to arrange for a
presentation or to obtain program literature.
“We want as many qualified applicants in our
community to know about this as possible,”
says Rios. “Local companies are very good
at finding ways to support their staff, and
Community Resource Center is eager to help
with that process.”
Ways to Work is a unique community
development financial institution based in
Milwaukee, WI. Through a network of loan
offices across the country, Ways to Work
provides financial education and small, shortterm,
low-interest loans to working families
with challenging credit histories. Nonprofit
agencies that operate the program are members
of the Alliance for Children and Families, a
sister company to Ways to Work. The Ways
to Work program - offered through both the
Community Resource Center in North County,
and Jewish Family Service south of SR 56 -
receives major support from the United Way
of San Diego County, The Leichtag Foundation,
and Walmart Foundation.
What Ways to Work Provides
through Community Resource
Center?
• Auto Purchase or Refinance Loans: Up to
$6,000 at an 8% rate, from 24-30 months
depending on amount of loan.
• Financial Education: Potential applicants
must participate in a class to become
familiar with types of bank accounts, loan
requirements and credit as well as the
impact of credit scores on their financial
lives.
• One-on-one Assistance: A CRC Loan
Manager helps applicants create a realistic
budget to help them achieve their financial
goals as well as develop strategies for
improving and maintaining their credit
scores. Throughout the term of the
loan, the Loan Manager also regularly
contacts borrowers to offer assistance
with their monthly budgeting and provide
connections to other community resources
if needed.
• Credit Repair – CRC Loan Manger will
periodically review the borrower’s credit
scores with them with the goal of improving
scores for the future.
oceanside Community Garden
Grows More than Food
by Abby Weglarz
The Gardens at North River Road, operated
by North County Community Services, is
planted on the property of Shepherd of the
Valley Lutheran Church in Oceanside, CA.
Groundbreaking on the site happened in
2010, and since then it has transformed from
an empty lot to a productive garden space!
The Gardens at North River Road applies
two community garden models on one site.
It demonstrates the “classic” community
garden model on the southern half of the
garden; here, households rent garden beds
to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs
for their own use. On the northern half of
the garden, volunteers help to grow food for
others in the community, not for themselves.
In the southern garden with rented garden
beds, there are currently 21 households
renting a total of 44 beds. Each bed is about
three feet wide by 20 feet long, and costs
$25 per year to rent. The cost of the bed
rental includes space, water, and occasionally
mulch, seeds, or other materials when they
are available. Gardeners are responsible for
weeding, watering, planting, and maintaining
their garden space. Most gardeners have
installed their own wood frame raised bed;
others garden directly in ground. Gardeners
grow a wide variety of plants, from artichoke
to zucchini.
Just one year ago, the garden was still striving
to get each bed rented. With word of mouth
and other exposure, there are now over 10
households on the waitlist to rent beds!
This waitlist clearly demonstrates there is a
demand for more community gardens in North
County San Diego!
North County Community Services operates
seven affordable preschools for low to
moderate income families. On the northern
half of the garden, there are 33 garden
beds that are used to grow food for these
preschools. Community volunteers make this
happen, growing about 3000 pounds of food
every year for these seven preschools. The
food grown is incorporated into the lunches
and snacks served at the preschools. This
would not be possible without tremendous
volunteer effort, and support, to the tune of
2,388 hours in 2012!
The Gardens at North River Road provides
an avenue for community involvement for
many different groups and individuals. The
volunteer base that supports the garden is
very broad. Corporations that want to give
back to the community by doing a one-time, or
annual, service project can schedule volunteer
events at the garden for their employees.
Dozens of corporations have helped in the
garden this way; the biggest events to date
include Genetech, Life Technologies, BOMA,
Eagle Creek, and prAna.
North County Community Services also
partners with other nonprofit groups to bring
volunteers to the garden. By partnering with
local nonprofits ROADS and Employment and
Community Options, the garden provides
developmentally challenged adults with a
Interfaith
Communty Connector
local teens harvesting vegetables at The Gardens
meaningful way to be active and contribute to
their community. These volunteers may have
trouble finding employment, but find plenty
of work planting, weeding, watering, and
sifting compost.
The garden also works with nonprofit
organizations that serve youth, including
Teen Volunteers in Action, Tariq Khamisa
Foundation, and Kids Korps. These programs
bring youth into the garden. The community
service experience, connection with nature,
and team building these projects provide are
very valuable for youth participants. Especially
when youth volunteers are able to return to
the garden and see the progress of their work
growing, they walk away with both a sense of
accomplishment and ability to affect positive
change. If you would like to volunteer or get
on the community garden wait-list, please
contact North County Community Services.
Coordinator. She can be contact by phone at 760-
Free Choir teaches Kids
to explore their Artistic
side While Making a
Difference by Pam Allen
Kids and music? Yes, please - cause I’m huge
fan of both. And the combination is dynamic.
When my husband Andy and I opened Coastal
Music Studios last September, we wanted to
find a way to give back to the community right
from the start. As a former teacher, I knew
many schools were cutting extra curricular
music programs, so offering a free choir for
students in the area seemed like a great way to
do our part by reaching out to the community
with the arts.
So we kicked off the North County Children’s
Choir last fall and were blown away on the very
first night of rehearsal when 72 kids showed
up! In the eight months since, 106 North County
kids have participated by singing in our choir.
These incredible kids have performed at local
North Coast Church canceled all church services
for an entire weekend April 27-28 in an epic
effort to unleash compassion on North County
through 250 community improvement projects
throughout the area.
“Church is about so much more than what
happens inside our church walls,” said Charlie
Bradshaw, North Coast Church executive pastor.
“It’s about following Jesus’ example to live out
our faith in tangible ways. We want to be the
events including, most recently, the Oceanside
Green Fair.
We loved the idea of the Green Fair - an effort
by the City of Oceanside to raise awareness
about environmental concerns - so we jumped
at the chance to participate when the City
asked our choir to perform. On April 27th, at
the pier Amphitheater, our kids had a blast
singing “What A Wonderful World”, “Beauty
In The World”, “Man In The Mirror” and
“Conviction Of The Heart”.
Earlier in the year, the choir was also invited
to perform with the San Diego Interfaith
Choir & Orchestra at the California Center
modern-day hands and feet of Jesus in our
community.”
About 7,000 volunteers from North Coast
Church rolled up their sleeves to collectively
complete approximately $1.5 million in
billable labor at parks, public schools, homeless
shelters and community centers.
Oceanside’s Libby Lake was quickly identified
as a neighborhood the church wanted to
encourage.
“The young girl who died in the latest shooting
was one of our teens,” said Jimmy Sigueroa,
coordinator for Project REACH for teens at the
Libby Lake Resource Center. “It really affected
us, and the teens want to respond in a positive
way. This service day comes at just the right
time.”
The teens in his program will work alongside
North Coast volunteers Saturday morning to
paint the Center’s teen room. They will also
build desks for the community computer room
Interfaith
Communty Connector
for the Arts in Escondido. Proceeds from that
event were donated to Interfaith Community
Services to help people struggling with
hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Our kids
stood bravely on that massive stage with a full
orchestra and sang to an audience of nearly
900.
I really love directing this choir. I’ve always
felt that few things in the world are as moving
as hearing kids sing passionately. They sing
like they live - raw, and from their very souls.
It’s a privilege to help these kids realize their
artistic potential and use their voices to make
a difference in their community and their
world.
North County Children’s Choir performing at Pier Plaza Amphitheater
I’m certain they are making a difference in
mine.
Pam Allen is the director of the The North
County Children’s Choir. The Choir is free for
all kids ages seven through fourteen (and a few
super-dedicated, mildly squiggly and glowing
six-year-olds!). To learn more about the choir
go to www.NorthCountyChildrensChoir.com
where the kids work on homework, job resumes
and college applications.
“I’m so happy my kids will be working with
North Coast,” Sigueroa said.”This shows people
care about these kids and want to invest in their
future. The kids are really excited about taking
ownership of this.”
Similar projects are planned for every corner of
North County San Diego, from Camp Pendleton
to Escondido’s Aster Street, the Carlsbad
Barrio and beyond. In addition to construction,
landscaping and painting, light-duty projects
included encouragement for local seniors,
a spa day for 100 low-income women and a
Gigantic Garage Sale to help fund the Weekend
of Service.
This is the fourth Weekend of Service for
North Coast, which is a biannual event. North
Coast is a multi-site church with about 9,000
attending weekend services at campuses in
Vista, Carlsbad and Fallbrook.
