In this election season, we are bombarded
with competing claims about
future spending for defense, Medicare,
Medicade, Social Security, and other
government programs. However, there
is an immediate need today – the proper nutrition of many
seniors in our community. These seniors find it difficult to
worry about long range sustainability of programs when they
are hungry today.
The effects of aging are many. Some individuals lose their
mobility and are confined to a wheel chair. Others lose their
eyesight and can no longer prepare meals. Some can no longer
operate an automobile and consequently cannot shop for food.
MACOA works to meet the nutrition and socialization needs
of seniors in our community. Our popular Meals On Wheels
(MOW) program serves over 365 seniors a hot, nutritious meal
delivered to their home by a friendly volunteer five days per
week. While a lot of seniors are fortunate to have family nearby
to assist with their needs, others are not so fortunate. To these
seniors, the meal each day may make it possible for them to
remain in their home.
But the hot, nutritious meal they receive each day is only a
part of the MOW support system. The delivery of the meal
by a friendly volunteer means the welfare of each senior is
checked each day. This visit by our MOW volunteer provides
more than a hot meal. It provides an opportunity for the senior
to have personal contact with a caring individual. Socialization
is as important to well being as nutrition. Being isolated
and alone can lead to depression and despair. Most MOW
clients anticipate the friendly volunteer as much as they do the
meal. The volunteer provides a personal link to the outside
world.
Proper nutrition and isolation are great concerns for many
seniors. MOW helps meet these concerns in your community.
However, many more are on waiting lists for meals than
receive them each day. And the demographics reflect a
growing problem. As our community ages, we are faced with
increasing needs.
You can help MACOA meet these needs. Our MOW
volunteers serve faithfully. Some deliver meals once a month.
Others deliver once a week. Some businesses encourage their
employees to participate. Financial support is also essential
to maintain this service. The average home delivered meal
costs about $4.50. A $1,000 donation will purchase the food
for one senior for one year. But, any amount will make a
difference. You can mail donations to 115 East Jefferson
Notes from
the Chair
By Jan Ellis
Chair, Board of Directors
The <strong>Montgomery</strong> <strong>Area</strong> <strong>Council</strong> On Aging has served the seniors in
the river region since 1972. We offer many programs, but Meals On
Wheels is our flagship. We are currently serving 366 seniors a hot meal,
five days a week. Sadly to say, we have another 352 people on our waiting
list. We would love to add more routes in order to reach these seniors, but
we need your donations to make this a reality. Once we begin offering a
daily meal, we need to be assured, financially, of sustaining that
commitment. We also provide 110 meals a day to four senior nutrition
centers in the area. Last month churches, restaurants and individuals
donated more than 1,800 frozen meals to MACOA for clients to pick up
at our office. Approximately 250 seniors come by and pick up bags of
five to six meals once a week. We also have a great need for more of these
frozen meals. No one is guaranteed a meal; we can only give out as many
as we receive from our wonderful volunteers.
These daily meals are a source of much needed nutrition, as well as
daily contact with a caring volunteer. The majority of our clients were
self-sufficient and productive their entire life; many now need our help
to continue living alone at home. Many need our help to keep from just
being hungry.
Volunteers and financial contributions have always been the back-
MAcOA/summer 2012 “Your Heart Will Understand!”
bone of our program. Meals On Wheels could not operate one day
without this unselfish support. Volunteers not only deliver meals, but
also, perhaps even more importantly, show concern, love and
compassion to our seniors. Frequently the volunteer may be the only
person the senior sees all day, providing human contact and a safety
net, particularly for those living alone.
Some comments from our seniors about the volunteers who
deliver their meals include:
“The time they give to me and their smiles are the best part of my whole day.”
“I tell them they are angels on wheels.”
“I don’t know what I’d done without them and my daily meal.
I can't cook for myself and nobody comes over to cook for me.”
“They don’t just deliver a meal, they deliver a friendship.”
How many of us can ever say we’ve ever been really hungry, have ever
been totally alone or even just forgotten? Please find a place in your
heart to help MACOA keep the wheels rolling as efficiently as possible
and allow us to serve even more seniors in our community. You can do
this by taking action today:
DONATE: Your dollar goes a long way to help hungry seniors stay
healthy and independent.
VOLUNTEER: Consider delivering meals or assisting in frozen meal
preparation.
RAISE AWARENESS: Share MACOA’s mission with others to help
broaden our base of supporters. Our seniors deserve our love and
generosity. We owe them a pledge of support.
The Client The Volunteer and The Board Member
Donald Jones picks up a set of
<strong>Area</strong> <strong>Council</strong> on
Aging for his elderly aunt who
can't cook for herself.
"My auntie is real sick," Jones
said. Jones just signed up for
MACOA’s Frozen Food program
and is able to make a
$10 donation on her behalf.
But there are hundreds of seniors
in <strong>Montgomery</strong> who do
not have the money or the
family to help prepare food.
"Our elders do not have to go
hungry. They shouldn't go
hungry," Jones said.
But 17% of Alabama seniors
face the threat of hunger; the
6th highest in the country according
to the National Meals
on Wheels Research Foundation.
MACOA feeds 365 seniors
hot meals five days a week.
However, almost 400 elderly
people remain on a waiting
list to receive meals or are
outside Meals On Wheels current
delivery areas. Many of
these waiting seniors come to
the MACOA office every
week to pick up frozen meals
to sustain them.
Earlier this year the frozen meal supply became severely understocked.
Without hesitation, board members Barbara Duke and Sieu
Tang Wood began working to refill the store of frozen meals. Mrs.
Duke began preparing frozen meals herself from home. With hard
work and a little ingenuity, Mrs. Duke cooked, packaged and delivered
over 100 frozen meals in April alone.
Sieu Tang Wood gave our frozen meals program the shot in the arm
that it needed to stay alive. MACOA is proud to have board members
and friends that not only support events and board meetings, but actually
get their hands dirty to make feeding the elderly a reality and not a
dream. Mrs. Duke and Mrs. Wood saw a need and acted swiftly to rectify
the problem.
Mrs. Wood contacted her friend and restaurateur Chang Kai Lin for
help. Mr. Lin owns Rooster’s Country Buffet. He agreed to donate food
each day to MACOA. Mrs. Wood and her husband, Bill Wood, and
many of Tang’s Alterations employees worked tirelessly to package
that food into hundreds of frozen meals trays. The first month, Mr.
Wood delivered over 370 frozen meals to the MACOA office. Through
their devotion and generosity, Mr. Lin and Mr. and Mrs. Wood have
continued to provide 300 to 400 meals each month for a total of over
1,500 since the beginning of the year. Nearly 300 elderly clients procured
a week’s worth of frozen meals per month because of the all the
extra meals provided.
MACOA cannot serve its clients
without the support and generosity
of local businesses, restaurants and the
dedication of its board members.
This assistance allows senior
citizens to stay in their own homes;
retaining their dignity and independence.
Why Should I be an RSVP Volunteer?
Every six months, RSVP programs report to the Federal government on the progress of their volunteer
efforts and how these efforts impact their communities. The reports include the number of volunteers, how
many hours they serve, and where they serve. These reports allow the governments to see where needs are and
how volunteers are meeting these needs. This helps keep up the flow of federal funds to support volunteer efforts.
Another reason is that it is good for your health! Volunteers agree that volunteering makes them feel
physically healthier and less stressed. Volunteering corresponds with higher levels of life satisfaction, including
a greater sense of meaning and purpose and causes one to be more optimistic.
The RSVP project, sponsored by MACOA, covers Autauga, Coosa, Elmore, Tallapoosa, and <strong>Montgomery</strong>
Counties. For more information on volunteering contact:
RSVP bids a fond farewell to Linda McLemore,
coordinator of <strong>Montgomery</strong> County. Linda had a
great rapport with her volunteers and she will be
missed. She has been replaced by long time staff
member Pam Goodwin who has served as the
coordinator in Autauga County for the
last 12 years. Pam will be serving both counties.
Pam is known for her work with the Yellow Dot
Program and the Autauga Water Festival. She also
developed the frozen meals program in Prattville and
provides over 700 meals each month. Pam’s hours
will be: Monday, Friday and every other Thursday in the Prattville
office (334-365-1007); Tuesday, Wednesday and every other
Thursday in the <strong>Montgomery</strong> office (334-265-9204).
Coosa County Coordinator Christine Harrell is retiring
to keep her new granddaughter after serving
four years in the Rockford office. She is best known
for her work with the adult literacy program, the Governor’s
Task Force for Strengthening Alabama Families,
and the development of two Neighborhood
Watch programs in the county. She also contributes a basket of
Christine’s Homemade Goodies to the Culinary Caper’s Silent Auction
and the Swinging Fore Seniors Golf Tournament. We are happy
to say that Christine will continue to be an RSVP volunteer. Interviews
are being scheduled for her replacement. If you have questions
please feel free to contact the main office at 334-265-9204.
RSVP WANTS YOU!
What is RSVP?
RSVP stands for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. It is a part of
a family of national service programs under the umbrella of Senior Corps. The
purpose of RSVP is to link the skills, knowledge, and experience of a volunteer
with identified needs in the community and to provide rewarding opportunities
for seniors.
Any person 55 years of age or older who is willing to volunteer on a regular
basis is eligible for membership. The amount of service can vary. The average number of hours served is
about four hours per week. There are no dues or membership fees.
“Your Heart Will Understand!”
The National Association
for Black
Veterans, Inc. (NAB-
VETS) is a membership
organization charged to
address issues concerning
black and other minority
veterans. This mission also includes
advocacy for youth and families, community involvement
to help create positive lifestyles for veterans,
and the empowerment of low income and
minority veterans and civilians. In keeping with
their mission the chapter of NABVETS in Autauga
County has formed a partnership with the
Autauga County Extension Service, sponsor of the
local 4-H Program, to help low income children
participate in 4-H.
Once agriculturally focused, today’s 4-H
concentrates on healthy living, science, engineering
and technology programs. The main focus of
these volunteers will be to raise funds to send children
to camps and on field trips and to purchase
supplies and materials for 4-H contests. Volunteers
also plan to judge these contests. If you are
TWO IMPORTANT ELECTIONS UPCOMING IN ALABAMA
By: Reese McKinney, Judge of Probate, <strong>Montgomery</strong> County
There are two important elections on the horizon in the State of Alabama. The 2012 General Election
on November 6th probably comes as no surprise to most people because of the constant media attention on
the Presidential candidates. In Alabama, however, there is a special statewide constitutional amendment election
that will be held on September 18th. In each of these elections, it is important for you to know your responsibilities
as a voter and exercise your right to vote.
As the Chief Election Official for <strong>Montgomery</strong> County, I do not advocate for one side of an issue or for a
particular candidate, but I do encourage strong voter participation in all elections. Furthermore, I understand
that the requirements and deadlines related to each election may cause confusion for some voters. With that
understanding and a desire to see strong voter participation, I would like to provide you with some important
information and dates for the upcoming elections.
Points to Remember for Voter Registration: In order to vote in any election, you must be registered to
vote at the physical address where you reside. If your address has changed since you last registered to vote,
you must update your voter registration record to reflect the change. You may register to vote at the Board of
Registrars or at any Probate Tag & License Office. You may also download a voter registration form at
Points to Remember for Absentee Voting: If you will be absent from the county on Election Day, or otherwise
unable to vote at your assigned polling place, please take advantage of the opportunity for absentee
voting. We strive to make the absentee voting process simple and user-friendly. Please note, however, that
there are important deadlines for applying for an absentee ballot and returning a voted absentee ballot.
Our trips are guaranteed the lowest price and best value in the industry! The greatest way
to travel with your friends. Twenty-four hour tour guides and all details pre-arranged.
One thing that sets us apart from other senior centers in the area is the amount of travel we offer... see the list
above for our offerings. When you receive this issue of <strong>Highl</strong><strong>ights</strong> we’ll just have returned from a tour of Ireland, the
fifth international tour hosted by Archibald since I arrived here a little more than three years ago.
Another thing that sets us apart is the amount of volunteerism at the Archibald Center. I am particularly grateful because
if I had remained in my school career, I would have been stuck in my administrative office and probably not
traveled very much at all. One thing about school I’ve been reminded of recently is the community service and volunteerism
requirements most schools have.
What brought this to mind is the effort at the Archibald Center to prepare frozen meals for the MACOA frozen meals
program. Our Archibald volunteers have produced many hundreds of meals so far, thanks to members who come in
Thursday mornings to work in the kitchen and those who generously donate money or food to the project. For many
of you who stop by from time to time it is obvious that on many days the office and telephone are handled by volunteers.
Other volunteers may be less obvious but all of our classes and activities are taught or headed by volunteers.
To me, the presence and even the dependence on volunteers prevents the Archibald Center from becoming an exclusive
club. Even though we have a non-manditory membership fee, the ownership of the center really belongs to
those folks who take it upon themselves to bring their interest and skills to others by offering a class or organizing an
activity. If you have an idea in mind to lead a class or group, please give me a call. It is also a community service to
participate in an activity here.
Being a member of a line dancing class is lending support to other line dancers. Joining an exercise class is helping
others to be less self-conscious about exercising and offering social support to others who many have few social outlets.
Look at our calendar and make a commitment to spend some time here and get to know other members.
The Archibald Center means a lot to many folks in the <strong>Montgomery</strong> area.
Culinary Caper
The Culinary Caper has become a well-known community event. The eighteenth annual Caper, held on Sunday, March 4,
lived up to its reputation. Once again, nearly 300 fortunate diners enjoyed delicious dishes prepared and served by some of the area’s
finest chefs coordinated by Al Steineker of the Kings Table Catering. Servers assisting the chefs were community volunteers coordinated
by Deborah and Jason Manasco. The silent auction and $1000 shopping spree drawing provided extra attractions for Caper
guests. The 2012 Culinary Caper was indeed a success! MACOA is pleased that the Culinary Caper raised nearly $50,000. This will
help ensure that seniors continue to receive programs and services so vital to their well-being. For many, the Meals On Wheels program
enables them to retain the dignity and independence of living in their own home.
STACIA BAILEY
Receives Award
from the Alabama
Gerontological Society
Local Montgomerian Stacia Bailey received
the Professional Award from the Alabama Gerontological
Society (AGS) at the AGS annual Awards
Luncheon held at the Westin Hotel in Huntsville on
Thursday, April 12, 2012.
The Alabama Gerontological Society is a
non-profit membership organization devoted to improving
the well-being of older persons throughout
Alabama. Each year the AGS Awards Committee
“Your Heart Will Understand!”
MACOA Board member Sam Johnson, Senior Services
Director Mary Margaret Kyser, and Executive
Director Rick Heinzman are shown with Stacia
as she accepted her award.
selects and recognizes individuals and organizations throughout the State of Alabama for their outstanding
contributions on behalf of older Alabamians.
Stacia Bailey was nominated by the <strong>Montgomery</strong> <strong>Area</strong> <strong>Council</strong> On Aging. The AGS Professional
Award is given to an individual employed in the field of aging in recognition of exceptional efforts
“above and beyond” the scope of their job description or duties in enhancing the lives of older
Alabamians. Stacia has been an employee in MACOA’s Meals On Wheels program for seven years.
She has been an outstanding member of the MACOA team. In her tenure at MACOA, Stacia has
been intertwined in many of our seniors’ lives, through delivering meals and when necessary, checking
on a needy client when they cannot be reached. Mrs. Bailey is known for developing relationships
with her clients and volunteers as well. She is known for her pleasant and most congenial
personality with a smile that can light up a room. Her clients and volunteers look forward to interaction
with her. Mrs. Bailey has pure respect and sincerity that she exudes to all of the people she
comes in contact with in her daily life.
Over the last seven years Stacia has driven thousands of miles and delivered thousands of
meals throughout the area. She is always willing to pitch in whether it is in Meals On Wheels or anything
involving seniors in our organization. Her most notable and ongoing service has been with Mr.
David Hart, a frozen meals client who would walk over a mile to get his frozen meals weekly. When it
appeared that Mr. Hart was experiencing more and more trouble with this task, Stacia stepped in and
gave him rides home or simply took the meals to his home. It was at that time that Stacia became
aware of the horrific conditions in which Mr. Hart was living. His home was full of mold and mildew.
The roof leaked and the landlord absolutely ignored his request for maintenance. Of course Mrs. Bailey
immediately came back to the office and began to search for a new place for Mr. Hart to live. She
put his name on dozens of senior housing lists and helped him fill out all of the appropriate paper
work. Mr. Hart now lives in a lovely modern apartment building that has a library, one of Mr. Harts favorite
past times.
It took one person taking an extra interest and offering a hand. MACOA is very fortunate to
have such a caring individual in its organization. Stacia Bailey and Mr. Hart are the epitome of what
MACOA is all about.
Because of her dedicated interest in helping senior citizens maintain their independence and
lead healthier, more satisfying lives through the programs of MACOA, Stacia is most deserving of the
2012 Alabama Gerontological Society Professional Award.
MACOA is the largest private nonprofit corporation in the <strong>Montgomery</strong> area dedicated solely to
serving senior citizens. Since 1972, MACOA's purpose has been to assist senior citizens by providing
services to promote independent living, by offering opportunities to enhance quality of life, and by increasing
community awareness of senior issues.
