Finding Our Voices
This winter, I was invited to give the Invocation at the
Martin Luther King Day breakfast. Dr. King’s birthday and our
Torah reading cycle always coincides in a wonderful way. Having
just experienced our Passover Seders and with the celebration
of freedom still in our minds, I share with you the words shared
that January day in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Rabbi Mackler “In the Jewish tradition, in our cycle of reading Hebrew
Scriptures, this time of year we read from the Book of Exodus
about the enslaved Israelites who cried out to God and their cries for justice were
heard. Indeed those moans and groans, that outrage from the young and old changed the
world. They gave hope and courage to a people, to a nation and those cries still move us
today, as we seek to repair the world. From those cries, came the cries of our prophets
for righteousness and freedom whose banner was lifted by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and
those like him who echoed these ancient calls that still beckon us today.
But it is not always easy for us to cry out. Often, we don’t have or cannot find
that voice. Often, we turn a deaf ear to the cries of others. Pride, selfishness, indifference,
ignorance these all silence us, deafen us. With our America freedom granted to us to
speak out against the inequalities we see before our eyes, we are saddled with the
responsibility as well as to answer the call of those who cry out themselves. Sadly, we
haven’t taken advantage of this opportunity enough in our lives.
All of us, young and old, must find our voice again to speak out for justice in our
nation – for equal rights, for human rights, for economic justice, civil liberties, for peace
and for real change. We must cry out, for there is much to cry about. As we recall the
memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr – as we honor his life and his passion and his cries
for justice, let us make a promise to ourselves to hear those cries regardless of race,
religion, nationality, orientation, gender, status or station in life. For only when we stop
and listen to the cries, can we then cry out for justice and compassion for all people in
the world. So we pray, Mekor HaChayim, Source of All Life,
May we listen to the voices and hear the cries of those who seek equality. May
we be their voice of courage.
May we listen to the voices and hear the cries of those who yearn for the freedoms
denied to them.
May we be their voice of strength.
May we listen to the voices and hear the cries of the children who still have no
voice of their own. May we be their voice in the silence.
May we listen to the voices and hear the cries of those suffering unimaginable
horrors.
May we be their voice of reason and conscience.
May we listen to the voices and hear the cries of those who have the courage to
survive and start their lives anew. May we be their voice of support and hope.
And so, Dear God, help us make their voices our voices, as we cry out to those
who will listen, as we join our voices with others, increasing the chorus, as we work
together for the day when the world has no choice but to listen and act, no choice but
to repair and love.
Ken Yehi Ratzon - Be this Gods will. Amen.

Get on Board
If you haven’t marked your calendar, do so now. The ninth Temple Arts Festival (TAF) will begin on
April 20, 2013.
TAF is our annual fundraiser, and the only fundraiser that we have. It is a gallery-style, juried fine
art and jewelry show. This year, more than 50 artists and jewelers from 22 states were selected to
participate, and most of the artists are new to TAF.
This year’s chairs are Leah Berman, Barbara Davis, Leslie Freedman, Rae & Bruce Hirsch, Mary Jones, Robb
McCluskey, Suzanne Schulman, Lisa & Stephen Small and Barbara Speller. Our Honorary Chair is Phyllis Alper.
Although it ends only twenty-four hours after it begins, the event is absolutely action packed. Okay, maybe it is
not action packed, but it is exciting, entertaining, and down right fun. Throw food and drink into the mix, and I cannot
imagine why anyone would want to be any place else.
Each TAF is the culmination of more than eight months of study, planning, and preparation, involving hundreds of
volunteers. Not only does it generate welcome revenue for the Temple, but also allows us to showcase our facility to the
hundreds of visitors from outside the Jewish community who attend the show.
Whether you are there to buy or only view, it is a great place and time to relax, enjoy the offerings, and spend time
with your friends and family. If you cannot attend, but make a contribution, your entire gift is a tax-deductible donation
to the Temple. And if you decide to buy something, a portion of your purchase price is a tax-deductible contribution.
This year, the art forms will include painting, glass, photography, fiber, multi-media images, ceramic, wood, metal
sculpture, and jewelry. There will be sufficient variety to accommodate most tastes, and a wide range of price points to
accommodate most budgets.
Much of the success of the arts festival can be attributed to the unique and distinctive quality of the offerings,
which are not typically available in Nashville. Moreover, the large variety of art media under one roof gives attendees a
rare opportunity to shop and compare prices in one place before making a purchase.
There will be two significant additions to the show this year. One is the addition of art-related activities for
children on Sunday afternoon. This will allow parents some free time to enjoy the art. The second will be the presence
of several food trucks. So, if you want to snack or eat lunch, you will have a variety of food options to choose from.
Be sure also to look for this year’s top awards, named the Sylvia Hyman Prizes, in honor of Sylvia Hyman’s many
contributions to TAF. Our judge is Jochen Wierich, Curator of Art for the Cheekwood Museum of Art.
The festivities will begin with the Connoisseurs’ Cocktail Hour at 5:00 PM Saturday afternoon, April 20, 2013.
The Collectors’ Cocktail Hour starts at 5:30 PM, followed by the Patrons’ Dinner Party at 6:30 PM. If you attend any of
these events, your total admission price can be used toward the purchase of art. Starting at 8:00 PM, admission is $15
per person, and includes drinks and desserts. Sunday hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00PM, and admission is free.
I hope that you will be able to attend and enjoy what should be another memorable affair.
--
Just a few days ago I mumbled various words into
my pillow as we changed back to daylight savings time.
The rain was pouring down and the bright lights from
steady traffic followed me until I reached The Temple’s
parking lot. What I could have done with an extra hour
of sleep! Then it dawned on me that warmer weather
would be here before we knew it. Passover (early this
year) would be approaching in a few weeks, and the
sounds and colors of spring would once again be visible.
Our children could play outside until their parents picked
them up in the evenings and the sun would still be lighting
the sky.
At Temple Preschool, springtime is a magical
experience. Special field trips are planned by our older
classes, gardens are planned and planted so that we can
once again taste the various specialties of “home grown”
vegetables and herbs. Our younger classes take nature
walks at the Belle Meade Mansion and enjoy picnics
outside. The sounds of birds are heard in these beautiful
surroundings and the lush shades of green are visible
everywhere. Flowers are in full bloom and we bring a
little bit of our exquisite environment inside the school
as we prepare for our own model Seder.
This year our model Seder was held on Wednesday,
March 20 th at 9:30 a.m. in our all purpose “big room.”
Our children decorated the tables with the scenes from
the holiday and nature - branches of green leaves, homemade
flowers, or brightly colored streamers. Placemats
and napkin holders were evident everywhere, as well as
the traditional plates of matzah, boiled eggs, sliced apples,
salt water, and a touch of horseradish. Rabbi Mackler
and Cantor Fishbein led our child-appropriate service
and songs were sung as we recounted the story of the
Jewish people as they triumph over being slaves in Egypt
to their eventual march to freedom. This interactive story
continues to be one of the highlights of our year and, just
as it is celebrated as a special family event at home, we
wish to convey that feeling at our school. Many of our
parents and grandparents help prepare and clean up from
our Seder. Our children help us by finding something
“green” on their plates and even tasting the salt water by
dipping parsley. Our teachers, of course, were on hand
to help us do everything from pouring extra cups of juice
and hiding the afikoman, to assisting the children with
their decorations.
Speaking of family fun events, please mark your
calendars now for the Temple Preschool Family Fun Day
which will be held on Sunday afternoon May 5 th , from
3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. There will be train rides, art activities,
music, snacks and tons of fun. From our family to yours,
we wish you “Happy Spring!”

Social Action
Youth Villages
Each month we highlight an organization which receives funds through the Temple’s Social Action Allocations.
Youth Villages helps Tennessee’s most vulnerable young people develop the capabilities necessary to live
independently. After spending years in the foster care system, these youth are now turning 18 years old, have virtually
no family or support systems and are making the huge transition into adulthood.
Funding from Social Action Allocations helps to provide services which include initial help with housing related
items, medical/dental expenses, food, hygiene needs, furniture, setting up housekeeping, job appropriate clothing, gas
or bus passes, educational costs, infant/children’s clothing and equipment. As their basic physical needs are met, these
youth will have a better chance to improve their emotional and mental health as they experience a positive new
beginning as participants in Transitional Living program.
Keep those pull tAbs coming in!
On January 27 th , students from the Religious School took one very heavy box to
Ronald McDonald House, which will sell the metal to help them provide the comfort
and care they offer to families of seriously ill or injured children receiving
medical treatment at Nashville area hospitals.
As a result, one of the students, Harrison Halprin, volunteered to take over emptying the
container and delivering the tabs as his Bar Mitzvah project.
Please place your pull tabs from soda, beverage and soup cans into the container
located by the Presidents’ photos near the Chapel.
