MaXaM 

More than a century of history: In 1872 Alfred Nobel and 

a group of Spanish industrialists established the first dynamite 

plant in Spain, which was to be a precursor to MAXAM. Now 

and for more than a hundred years, MAXAM´s commitment 

has been to supply its clients in the mining and construction 

industries with a full range of safe and high quality blasting 

products and services. 

Worldwide: The companies in the MAXAM group work 

together to supply products to all major markets worldwide, 

where only reliable and high quality products are acceptable. 

MAXAM, international distribution network ensures timely 

delivery to the most remote locations. 

MAXAM DANTEX South Africa (Pty) Ltd was formed in 

October 1987 when the Company took over the Rand Leases 

Mine Site formally occupied by National Explosives (Pty) 

Limited. In 1998 the name of the Company changed to show 

the involvement of our major shareholder to UEE-Dantex 

Explosives (Pty) Limited. 

In 2006 the company was renamed as 

MAXAM DANTEX South Africa (Pty) Ltd. 

MaNuFacturINg FacIlItIes 

MAXAM DANTEX South Africa (Pty) Ltd has its 

manufacturing installation located at Rand Leases Mine 

property, Main Reef Road, Roodeport, conveniently located 

in a nonsensitive area of the city that also has convenient 

access to the main roads around Johannesburg. 

MAXAM DANTEX South Africa (Pty) Ltd manufactures 

five different families of explosives: 

• DANFO: ANFO, packed in 25 kg bags suitable for local or 

export use. 

• PERMITTED EXPLOSIVES: one of MAXAM DANTEX 

SOUTh AFRICA’s competencies is in the manufacture of 

permitted explosives, leading the South African market for this 

type of product. Our company manufactures mainly 2 types 

of products, SEAMEX and MAGEX suitable for all coal mining 

conditions. 

• KUBELA: Unique high-energy low-water gel widely 

employed for blasting under wet or dry conditions with 

improved results. Its stiffness recalls the solid feel and easy 

loading of dynamites. KUBELA is supplied in a complete and 

comprehensive range of energies, diameters and lengths. 

• RIOFLEX & RIOFLEX iMALTA: This bulk explosive 

represents the latest development in bulk technology, 

with proven successful results in both underground 

(RIOFLEX iMALTA) and open pit environment, compared 

to normal emulsions.

coMPaNY ProFIle 

Pumping Units: RIOFLEX iMALTA is supplied in combination 

with a pumping unit, either self propelled or dependant on a 

mine utility vehicle, as per clients’ request. Our current fleet 

includes different types of self propelled units, cassettes and a 

significant number of stoping units, the last mentioned being a 

miniature version of a cassette. The Company also distributes 

explosives accessories such as relays, shock tube, detonators, 

capped fuse and igniter cord, detonating cord, etc. Additionally 

the company manufactures and supplies Mono Methyl Amine 

Nitrate and hexamine Nitrate, basic raw materials for the 

manufacturing of other explosives.

MAXAM DANTEX South Africa (Pty) Ltd stringent quality 

control of raw materials, processes and systems results in 

products of exceptional quality. MAXAM has been granted ISO 

9000 quality certification and we can affirm that MAXAM has 

more quality certifications than any other explosives producer in 

the world. 

In September 1990 MAXAM DANTEX South Africa 

(Pty) Ltd was successful in attaining SABS 0157 through the 

implementation of the Quality Management System, we have 

undergone our bi annual assessment audits which also saw the 

Quality Management System evolve over the years and MAXAM 

DANTEX South Africa is currently certified ISO 9001-2008.

Rioflex is taking over the market with major success 

stories to tell. The word Rioflex iMAlTA® means “energy”. 

Features and benefits

Uses

Properties 

in order to evaluate bulk explosives, it is worth going 

through the main characteristics of the different types 

present in the market. Bulk explosives today are 

dominated by three different families of explosives, 

namely Anfo, emulsions and Water gels. in general 

terms, the following characteristics apply to the Water 

gel families such as Rioflex: 

• High energy content (Rioflex 3,00 MJ/kg) 

• low water content (~10%). Better use of explosive 

energy as less water (inert) needs to be heated to the 

explosion temperature (~2500 K) 

• uses high energy water soluble fuels 

• 100% Water resistant. Rioflex is cross linked in the 

borehole which renders it resistant to dynamic ground 

water in boreholes and stemming contamination 

• Totally pumpable. Makes possible a consistent 

displacement of the borehole water interface by 

loading from the bottom up 

• uniform performance irrespective of water presence in 

the boreholes 

• universal bulk explosive for wet/dry conditions. Makes 

it possible to drill expanded patterns consistently, 

irrespective of weather conditions

BARRel® is a cap sensitive cartridge 

water gel explosive for use in general 

smooth blasting operations. it is 

completely waterproof and can be used 

for shaft sinking as well as in horizontal

kuBela ® 

Riogel® is available in three different grades namely 

KuBelA® 420, 60 and 40 which are all dry gel explosives. 

Riogel® has a solid feel and is easy to load much 

like dynamites but has the advantage of safety, high 

performance and pleasant working conditions like water 

gels. All dry gel explosives do not contain nitro glycerine. 

KuBelA® is developed from water gels and gives the 

customer all that it has come to rely on namely: 

• no headaches 

• low blasting fumes 

• low sensitivity to accidental detonation and high 

performance. 

Rigidity of the product means: easy loading, improved 

up-hole charging, less overcharging and reduced fumes in 

stoping operations.

MAgex® is a new ultra high-energy permitted water gel explosive for 

use in underground coal mines. it complies with all the requirements 

of the SABS permitted explosives specification. MAgex® is suitable 

for blasting the toughest coal, high seams and dykes. its coal-breaking 

power exceeds that of the most powerful permitted dynamites. it offers

Sequencing system for use in

Detonating cord relays are used to 

sequence blastholes with one another, 

connecting them to the detonating cord 

placed inside them, or on the trunkline, 

providing proper sequencing that 

covers most work needs. it is designed 

symmetrically and is two-way, allowing 

easy connections. 

The detonating cord is fixed inside the 

relay with a series of tightening wedges 

connected to the main body of the relay, 

which facilitates use. 

The element is housed inside a red or 

yellow plastic body which specifies its

rIocord detonating cord 

INITIATION 

Riocord must be initiated by an octuple-strengh detonator or using 

another detonating cord. Recommended connections explained on the 

intruction sheet should always be followed. 

it is essential that the detonating cord be checked to ensure that it is dry 

at the initiation location. 

rIocord

Normal and reinforced detonating cord, 

for use in mining, quarries, construction 

and seismic prospection industries 

Riocord is a flexible detonating cord with 

a core made of an explosive material 

(peTn). it detonates at an approximate 

speed of 7,500 m/s. 

APPLICATIONS 

Riocord can be used both to initiate 

nitroglycerine-based explosives or 

boosters. it can also be used as 

a trunkline to initiate non-electric 

detonators. its use along with 

microdelay relays, makes it possible 

to define a wide variety of sequencing 

projects. 

permissible Riocord is manufactured 

with 6 g/m and a coating that includes 

a delay agent in its composition making 

it suitable for using in interior coal 

mining. 

Riocord is manufactured in both 

standard and reinforced versions. The 

reinforced types are used in extreme 

conditions where special features in 

terms of tensile strength and abrasion 

resistance are required. 

The larger weight formats are used in 

shape blasting (presplitting and contour 

blasting). 

The entire Riocord range is waterproof, 

flexible, and allows interconnection.

sHock tuBe 

The Rioline has been designed as 

part of the reliable non electric 

system for initiation of blasts. 

Rioline consists of a long length 

of spooled shock tube. Rioline 

shock tube is safe against 

extraneous currents and designed 

to provide high tensile strength and 

resistance to elongations. 

Rioline can be initiated with 

RiocoRD detonating cord, RioDeT 

electric and Rionel non electric 

detonators or other initiation 

systems designed for this purpose. 

included within spools of Rioline 

are caps to protect the end of the 

shocktube. Also included are 

transparent plastic connectors to 

obtain longer lengths as required.
