Nova Scotia Printer Makes<br />
$10 MILLION Investment<br />
Advocate Printing & Publishing, Atlantic<br />
Canada’s largest independent printer, has<br />
made a $10 million investment to its<br />
printing operation in Pictou, Nova<br />
Scotia including the purchase of a Goss<br />
M600 heatset commercial press, the<br />
largest single purchase in the company’s<br />
115-year history.<br />
“This investment means that<br />
Advocate’s Pictou plant will be the most<br />
modern and advanced heatset printing<br />
facility in eastern Canada and allows us<br />
to expand our business in the Maritimes<br />
but also right across the country and into<br />
the US.” said Sean Murray, CEO. The<br />
new press, suited to publication and<br />
other commercial print work, is<br />
expected to increase the company’s<br />
capacity by 300 percent, .<br />
It’s expected that once the press is up<br />
and running it will create 30 new jobs for<br />
the Pictou location. “As a long-standing<br />
anchor business for Pictou County, this<br />

Advocate expects to begin installation<br />
of the new press by August.of this year.<br />
“The M600 will give us a competitive<br />
edge in the marketplace,” said Murray,<br />

Spin-off<br />
The MAN Group,<br />
parent company of<br />
MAN Roland, has<br />
announced a joint<br />
venture with the Allianz Group to<br />
purchase MAN Roland and run it as an<br />
independent entity.<br />
Allianz Capital Partners will control<br />
65% of the JV with MAN retaining<br />
35%. “I feel proud and enthusiastic<br />
about this new development,” said<br />
Gerd Finkbeiner, MAN Roland CEO at<br />
IPEX. The plan is to make the business<br />
fit for public listing in 3 to 5 years.<br />
“The company must be able to show<br />
the market that it can grow over this<br />

Steps Aside<br />
After two years as president and<br />
CEO of Quebecor World, Pierre<br />
Karl Péladeau is moving over to<br />
run the family’s media division and<br />
handing the print job to American<br />
Wes Lucas, the former chairman,<br />
president and CEO of top ink<br />
supplier Sun Chemical Corp.<br />
During Péladeau’s tenure<br />
Quebecor World launched a<br />
company-wide retooling plan and<br />
carried out aggressive streamlining<br />
of operations including the sell-off<br />
of its commercial sheetfed printing<br />

division. Last year Quebecor World<br />
reported revenues of US$6.3 billion<br />

Lucas, a Harvard Business<br />
School graduate, joined Sun<br />
Chemical in August 2001 with a<br />
previous background with global<br />
industrial chemical operations.<br />
This will be his first printing<br />
company experience. He’s slated to<br />
begin at Quebecor World May 11.<br />
