the Opel Zafira into the small monocab segment. Its

The Opel Meriva is the first car to pack the
full versatility of a small monocab into a
dynamic and expressive design.
It is a logical expression and interpretation
of the Opel design language successfully
introduced by the Astra.
• The windscreen is pulled forward, forming
an unbroken line with the bonnet, which
bears the characteristic Opel centre
crease, delivering optimum outward vision.
• The eagle-eye headlights are similar to
those of the Opel Astra, adding a high
quality appearance and incorporating the
“wing” shape daylight running lights that
are a part of the current Opel design
signature.
• The form of the headlights is echoed by
the openings carrying the fog lights.
• The trapezoid grille with the broad chrome

recognisably wider track conveys a dynamic,

Getting in and out was never easier.
A quantum leap in ergonomic flexibility
For the development team of the new Opel
Meriva the vision was always clear: to
develop a car that is the most flexible
5-seater small monocab.
To do this they analysed not only the
demands, but also the way that these
customers used their cars. With the Opel
Meriva, regardless of the age of the
customer, the rear seats are in frequent daily
use, as opposed to the occasional
occupancy of other small cars.
From this research the idea arose to offer
these customers something better or more
suitable to their needs, and at the same
time to set a new standard in ergonomics
and flexibility.

The unique FlexDoors ® system is the result of
this direction of thought. The opposite
opening portal doors offer distinct
advantages in everyday use to all customer
target groups.
• Getting in or out of the rear seats takes
place where the roof is at its highest point,
making it much more comfortable.
• The B pillar allows – in contrast to other
portal door systems without B pillar – the
independent opening of front and rear
doors.
• The 84º opening angle of the rear doors
enables a natural and ergonomic body
motion during ingress and egress that is
further aided by the large handle on the
B pillar.
• In tight parking spaces entry is easier,
since no contortions around the half open
door are needed.
• Four opening stages mean that opening
the doors in tight spaces is better
controlled.
Ergonomics
• For parents the FlexDoors ® system offers a
clear advantage when securing children in
or releasing them from their child seats, as
well as mounting the child seats.
• When both front and rear doors are open,
a safety zone is created in which it is easier
to control children leaving the car, parents
are closer to the children and not
separated by the rear door.
• In use the FlexDoors ® system eases loading
and unloading, for instance while shopping
or carrying more unusual loads.
• A light mounted in the lower B pillar
illuminates the ground beside the car,
adding yet another convenient safety
feature.
• Finally the FlexDoors ® system makes
access to the FlexSpace ® easier, making it

Portal doors, a brief history
Due to their convenience opposite opening
portal doors eased access to the rear seats
even in the days of horse-drawn carriages.
They were also common on early luxury cars.
However, as automotive performance increased
the door lock technology did not
keep pace. Due to the resulting safety concerns
they were banned in 1961.
One exception was made for the legendary
London taxis, to enable the passengers to
enter comfortably even when wearing a hat.
Since 2006 a new ECE regulation ensuring
maximum safety and security opened the
path for the reintroduction of rear-hinged
doors. They are an outstanding feature of
the new Rolls-Royce Phantom and have been
seen on special models from, among others,
Mazda and Mini.
The new Opel Meriva with the FlexDoors ®
system is the first vehicle that offers the advantages
of portal doors with independent
opening.
More access space
As opposed to conventional doors that usually
open to about 67° the portal doors of
the new Meriva open to 84°. This means they
offer more room for comfortable, ergonomically
optimal entry and exit, made even easier
by the large handle on the B pillar.
Safety zone
As the diagram on the left shows, with both
front and rear doors open there is a partially
enclosed area. This creates a secure feeling
and makes it easier to control children as
they step in or out of the car. This safety feature
will especially appeal to younger family
customers.

Child safety
Like conventional doors, the FlexDoors ®
sytem also includes child locks in the rear
doors that are mechanically activated. They
complement the electronically activated
safety locks.
Door opening in case of accident
When the airbags are detonated the doors
are automatically unlocked and can be
opened from inside or outside. The rear child
locks are automatically deactivated.

Dual circuit safety systems
Just as in the aircraft industry where the
highest safety standards are enforced, the
FlexDoors ® logic function is duplicated in the
FlexDoors ® Monitoring Electronics (FDME).
In addition all FlexDoors ® logic-related
connections, modules, and cables are
permanently and constantly monitored and
checked. In case of any failure a strong
visual and audio warning is sounded.
Optimal side impact protection
As opposed to other cars with portal doors,
the new Opel Meriva has a substantial B
pillar. This gives the following benefits:

independently of each other

• Higher strength and stability throughout
the bodywork that in turn increases the
premium-quality feeling
Ergonomics
Smart advanced safety logic
Meriva customers, whether old or young,
have a high level of safety consciousness.
With this in mind the safety systems of the
new Opel Meriva received high priority. They
were conceived to deliver maximum safety
under all imaginable circumstances, without
disturbing the comfort or demanding more
attention from the driver or passengers. To
fulfil this aim Opel engineers worked
together with one of the world’s leading
research institutes.
The Fraunhofer Institute IPA has developed
much of the underlying technology that we
use every day without thinking about it. For
example the MP3 technology that enabled
today’s leading audio technology.
The FlexDoors ® safety system developed in
combination with the Fraunhofer Institute
contains the analysed data from some 1,000
system configurations and activities.
Specially constructed robots were used for
all the long-term component tests to ensure
the functional reliability and safety of the
mechanical closing elements and the
electronic control modules.

Intuitive operation
While it is understood that no one should
open a car door while the car is in motion, in
the new Opel Meriva this is permanently enforced
with the safety system:
• The whole door system is checked electronically
every time the engine is started.
• If the doors are not properly closed the
driver is immediately alerted both acoustically
and visually.
Opening procedures whilst driving

• The front doors can be opened from inside,
but from outside they remain locked.
• The rear doors remain locked, opening
them from in or outside is impossible.

Premium-class adjustment
The standard driver’s seat of the new Opel
Meriva sets new class standards. It is directly
derived from the current generation of Opel
seating. It is not only supremely comfortable
and supportive, it also has the longest travel
and height adjustment in this segment:
• 240 mm travel
• 65 mm height adjustment (best in class)
Together with the standard tilt and
telescope steering column and the high
mounted shifter, this enables every driver to
find their ideal driving position, while
enjoying a level of comfort previously only
available in premium-class cars.
Improved all-round vision
In addition to the high seating position,
good external vision is a major buying
consideration for monocab customers. The
large, forward mounted windscreen with slim

external vision.
Intuitive operation
The gear lever of the new Opel Meriva has
been mounted higher, ensuring that the
hand falls directly and comfortably onto it.
In addition the shallow angle of the centrally
mounted controls for the infotainment and
air conditioning enables optimal ergonomic
operation.

make the driving day easier.

vertical, but installed at the natural angle
taken by the hand as it reaches for them.

The basic advantage of FlexSpace ® , that the
rear seats stay in the car and fold into the
floor to give a flat load space, remains

In standard configuration, with the rear
seats raised, the load volume is a generous
400 litres (VDA), which can be enlarged in
stages to a full 1,500 litres.
• An especially practical feature is the loadspace
floor. In the higher position, with the
rear seats folded flat, it offers a flat load
space, making loading and unloading easier.
Under the floor there is a covered compartment,
offering another 86 litres of useful
storage.
• A retractable hook in the side wall is ideally
placed to take a shopping bag. It also
holds the floor in the upright position easing
access to the underfloor storage.
• In the lower setting higher loads can be
carried, and the luggage-space availability
behind the rear seats is maximised.
• Closed storage compartments in the side
walls of the luggage compartment are
standard on the new Opel Meriva.
• A hard cargo tray with anti-slip surface
protects the interior against dirt and wet
items. Specially tailored for the new Opel
Meriva, available as accessory.

A standard feature of the new Opel Meriva is
the advantageous electric parking brake.
One of the benefits gained from this is that
in combination with the high mounted gear
lever, a large storage space is freed between
the front seats. The unique new FlexRail ®
aluminium rail system uses this to maximum
advantage, providing highly versatile
modular multi-level storage capacity.
• In the standard lower console there are
two cupholders and two storage spaces for
mobile phones, MP3 players, etc., with 12-
V power outlet and optional aux-in and
USB connection.
• In the Cosmo the aluminium rails of the
FlexRail ® system are added. It holds an
extra cupholder module that can be slid
and positioned anywhere in the system,
allowing it to be used by front or back seat
occupants. In addition, it features a
comfortable armrest with a closed storage
that can be conveniently slid and fixed into
position anywhere along the upper rails.
• When the cupholders and armrest are
pushed rearwards, a roomy, protected
storage space between the rails offers
easily accessible space for a notebook
computer or a handbag.
• When not needed, all the moveable
components can be easily and quickly
removed.
• The console lighting ensures that even at
night there is illumination enough to find
whatever is stored.
• A special adapter for the middle rear seat
back allows the modular FlexRail ® armrest
and cupholder modules to be mounted on
the forward folded seatback for the rear
passengers.

Easily reached, flexible, and usefully sized
storage spaces that can cope with almost
any realistic and everyday demand were
given the highest priority in the new Opel
Meriva.
• Opel researches issued a questionnaire to
over 400 customers to define the most
frequently used items in a car.
• The aim was to find an easily accessible
place for the top 20 items of their
requirements.
With up to 32 open and closed storage
possibilities this aim was not only met, it was
comfortably surpassed.

Even the small cars and vans attract
customers who want a high level of comfort
and equipment that not only makes the car
more attractive in everyday use, but also
adds to its prestige and value.
Manual air conditioning
The air recirculation of the manual air
conditioning is push-button operated and
also has an electronically controlled
compressor to reduce fuel consumption.
Electronic Climate Control (ECC)
Efficient air management with low noise
levels even at full power is a feature of the
ECC in the new Opel Meriva. It uses a
patented regulation system to ensure
especially consistent and comfortable air
conditioning. It is dual-zone, allowing both
the driver and front passenger to select and
set their ideal temperature.

Daylight running lights
The daylight running lights use very little
power, so saving fuel, while at the same time
providing maximum daylight visibility.
Panorama sunroof
The full-width panorama sunroof of the new
Opel Meriva stretches over the first and second
seat row, giving a light and airy ambience.
To protect against too much sun it has
an electrically operated sunshade.

Front and rear Park Assist
The Park Assist has front- and rear-mounted
sensors to detect possible parking obstacles
and sound warning of potential collisions. It
is automatically activated by selecting reverse
gear, but for forward parking can also
be manually activated.
Comfort
Electric parking brake
The all new electric parking brake is a
standard feature on Opel Meriva. It replaces
the conventional manual parking brake and
interacts with several other functions.
• It can feasibly be operated with one finger,
even in fully loaded condition on steep
slopes.
• Auto-Drive-Away allows the customer to
launch the vehicle without prior manual
parking brake release. This is a huge
benefit, especially on gradients where the
driver typically needs to balance clutch
and accelerator pedal with parking brake
to avoid possible roll back.
In combination with the optional Hill Start
Assist this also eases starting on gradients
without using the parking brake.

Pedal Release System (PRS)
The Pedal Release System is a patented Opel
safety feature that automatically releases
the pedals in a major crash situation, so
helping avoid foot and lower leg injuries in
the footwell. The system was further developed
for the new Opel Meriva.

ISOFIX child seat system
The ISOFIX child seat fixing system is
standard on the outer rear seats of all new
Opel Merivas.
• The secure attachment of the seats to the
body structure improves the safety.
• The seats are easily fitted or removed, the
Top Tether Kit also guards against tipping
forwards.
Security restraint system
The new Opel Meriva is equipped with front
and side airbags for driver and front
passenger; from Enjoy curtain airbags are
also standard. The front passenger airbag
can be switch-deactivated for child seat use.
A special safety feature is the use of double
pre-tensioned front seat belts. In a crash,
these keep the driver and front passenger in
the ideal position for the airbags to offer
optimal protection. All the seats in the new
Opel Meriva are equipped with seat belt
warning.

Passive safety
The basis of passive safety in the new Opel
Meriva is a rigid passenger cell that has
minimum deformation, providing maximum
protection to all occupants.
• Within and around this high-tensile steels
are used.
• In a front or rear collision crumple zones
absorb and diffuse crash energy
throughout the structure.
• Special deformation elements front and
rear absorb energy in low-impact crashes,
so saving money on repair costs.
Repair-friendly construction
The new Opel Meriva follows the
recommendations of the Research Council
for Automobile Repairs (RCAR), an
international organisation of insurers. The
bumpers are mounted to avoid over- or
under-running another vehicle in case of an
accident. In addition expensive parts such
as the headlights and radiator, special
mounting elements that react to a low speed
accident, guard them against damage. The
advantage of this is that the new Opel
Meriva receives lower vehicle insurance
premium classification.
Adaptive brake lights and automatic
hazard warning lights
The adaptive brake lights warn following
traffic by blinking rapidly (5 x per second),
when the ABS is activated at over 30 km/h.
When the airbags are released the hazard
warning lights are automatically activated.
Pedestrian Protection
The special construction of the front
bumper, with harder lower section and
impact-absorbent higher section, reduces
the risk of leg and knee injuries. In case of a
pedestrian head impact, the bonnet is
impact-absorbent to minimise injury.

Electronic chassis systems
The new Opel Meriva features the latestgeneration
Electronic Stability Program Plus
(ESP ®Plus ). It includes the following functions:
• Straight Line Stability Control (SLS), which
recognises any tendency towards
instability under braking and adjusts the
brake pressure for optimum straight-line
braking stability under all road conditions.
• Cornering Brake Control (CBC), which
improves stability in bends by reducing the
brake pressure of individual wheels.
• Drag Torque Control (DTC), which prevents
loss of grip due to engine brake torque on
icy roads.
• Enhanced Understeering Control (EUC),
which can operate on up to all four brakes
to stabilise potentially critical situations.
• Brake Assist System (BAS) respects the
latest pedestrian protection requirements
to give a higher deceleration gain even to
unskilled drivers and results in shorter
braking distances under all circumstances.
• Active Rollover Protection (ARP): in case of
extreme curves with high velocity, the
ESP ®Plus slows down the car to a stable
condition and prevents roll-over. This is a
special benefit e.g. in case of loaded roof
carrier.
• Hydraulic Brake Fade Assist (HBFA), which
automatically raises braking pressure to
compensate potential brake fade.

Safety
Active safety
The chassis of the new Opel Meriva is
significantly improved in all criteria.
Architectural components are carried over
from current Opel Zafira, with wider track in
front and rear. In line with the longer
wheelbase the customer benefits from
higher ride comfort, improved steering
precision and greater active safety. The new
chassis allows wheel sizes up to 18˝ and
ensures a high level of driving dynamics.
The steering system has been changed from
the current Meriva which has an Electric
Power Steering system (EPS) to an Electro-
Hydraulic Power Steering system (EHPS) to
be able to accommodate the increased size
and loads.
Besides active safety, maximum passive
safety was also a main development target:
the new Opel Meriva features larger brake
sizes in comparison to the current car.
Sight and Light Pack
Several features that increase both safety
and driver satisfaction are available in the
optional Sight and Light Pack:
• Automatic Lighting Control with tunnel
recognition. When the headlights are
automatically activated the daylight
running lights are deactivated.
• Rain sensor. Automatically activates the
windscreen wipers and is regulated by the
vehicle speed and rain density.
• Automatically dimming interior rear-view
mirror protects against dazzle from
following traffic.

meets Euro 5 emission standard. It has
16-valve technology and reflects the Opel
philosophy of downsizing for increased allround
economy.
Efficiency is optimised by the use of
lightweight components such as hollow
crank and camshafts and by the reduction of
internal friction.
The 1.4 Turbo version demonstrates the
downsizing principle convincingly by
delivering 103 kW. Here sodium-filled valves,
close-coupled pre-catalytic converter and
thermal mapping are used together with the
double cam phasing to provide the clean
power. All of these engines also feature
advanced vibration damping to make
driving the new Meriva even more
pleasurable.
