Mountains so old they owe no tithe. Before Spider, re lived with the unders who streaked and sparked through the clouds, laughing and smashing against the sky. Gleeful creatures, they brought the sky to life yet looked down at Judaculla’s Totems with pity. e ridges cast shadows that were alive, shadows that were lovers with frost and black ice. Long aer the sun melted March’s wicked bluster, shadows hoarded secret sleet clusters. Without re the cold was unbearable, even for Totems with feath- ers and fur. At night the shadows crept up and blocked the light; you never knew if they would slink back down and let the sun rise. Either way, Judaculla the giant didn’t seem to mind. But the unders did. ey thought Judaculla was cruel to deny his creatures what they needed most and decided to meddle; the unders lived for meddling. ey struck and sparked a tree sur- rounded by a lake. e re blasted high into the sky, rushing shadows to the coves. e Totems were thrilled until they tried to catch the ame—Bear’s big paws couldn’t touch it and it was too hot for Owl’s beak. Trout kept dousing the re out and twigs popped, burning Lynx in spots. e giant, Judaculla, watched and smiled. Aer everyone else failed, tiny Spider crawled to the front and said, “Let me try”. Eagle and Otter traded looks. Snake rolled her eyes and slithered back under foot. Elk brushed the ground with his hoof but said, “Alright”. Spider secured the tusti bowl on her back and skittered across the water. Embers littered the lake’s bank; she gathered them in her bowl and scurried back home. Soon enough, Spider lit little res and the valley was warm. Everyone was happy. Except Judaculla, who summoned Spider into his Courthouse. He picked her up in his mammoth hand, put her in a damp corner and said, “You cannot own what you did not make.” He thought about it and decided not to take her ame.
She’s been there ever since—angry, hungry, alone—trapped until the slant-eyed giant leaves the Land. And when Tim was born, Judaculla did.
