borbe protiv raka u Srbiji Jugoslovenskog 

dru{tva za izu~avawe i suzbijawe 

raka i Dru{tva Srbije za borbu protiv 

raka odràna je 10. decembra 2007. godine 

u Beogradu, u kristalnoj dvorani hotela 

Hyatt Regency. Ovoj sve~anosti prisustvovalo 

je 250 zvanica, predstavnika onkolo{kih 

centara i dispanzera iz Srbije i 

Vojvodine, op{tinskih dru{tava za borbu 

protiv raka, SANU, AMN SLD, SLD, 

VMA, KCS i drugih stacionarnih zdravstvenih 

ustanova koje se bave i onkologijom. 

Na sve~anosti su bile prisutne i delegacije 

Dru{tava za borbu protiv raka iz 

Qubqane, Bawaluke, Podgorice i @eneve 

(UICC). 

Predstavnici vlade Srbije, sredstava 

javnog informisawa, Srpske pravoslavne 

crkve i onkolo{kih pacijenata su tako|e 

u~estvovali u ovoj manifestaciji. 

Ceo tok sve~anosti zabeleèn je audiovizuelnom 

kamerom sa koje je skinut 

govorni deo sve~anosti koji je posluìo 

za pisawe autenti~nog teksta u monografiji. 

Sve~anu akademiju je otvorio i pozdravio 

sve prisutne zvanice prof. dr 

Slobodan îkari}, doma}in sve~anosti.

Solemn Academy on the occasion of 80 

years of fight against cancer in Serbia by the 


Treatment of Cancer and Serbian Society for 

Fight Against Cancer was held on December 

10, 2007, in the Crystal Hall of the Hotel 

Hyatt Regency. The celebration was attended 

by 250 guests, representatives of oncology 

and health centers from Serbia and 

Vojvodina, municipal societies for fight 

against cancer, Serbian Academy of Sciences 

and Arts (SASA), Academy of Medical 

Sciences of the Serbian Medical Society 

(AMS SMS), Serbian Medical Society, 

Military Medical Academy (MMA), Clinical 

Centre of Serbia (CCS) and other stationary 

health care institutions, which include oncology 

services. 

Celebration was attended by delegations 

of Societies for Fight Against Cancer from 

Ljubljana, Banjaluka, Podgorica and Geneva 

(UICC). 

Representatives of the Serbian Government, 

media, Serbian Orthodox Church and 

oncological patients participated in this 

solemn event as well. 

The whole event was recorded by audiovisual 

means, and audio recording of speeches 

turned out to be quite useful for presentation 

of authentic texts in the Monograph.

Po okon~awu sve~ane akademije sve 

zvanice su dobile monografiju „80 godina 

borbe protiv raka u Srbiji” autora prof. 

dr Slobodana îkari}a.

koji uìva ovaj ugledni hotel.

After the ceremony and artistic programme 

all guests were given the Monograph 

"80 Years of Fight Against Cancer in Serbia"

bio inicijator formirawa velikog 

Jugoslovenskog dru{tva koje treba da se 

bavi izu~avawem i suzbijawem raka, to je 

bio pionirski i vizionarski potez. 

Profesor Joannovi} je dvadesetih godina 

napustio veoma dobro mesto {efa 

Katedre patolo{ke anatomije Univerziteta 

u Be~u i pridruìo se maloj grupi 

entuzijasta, koji su zapo~eli razvoj 

Medicinskog fakulteta Univerziteta u

Dear ladies and gentlemen, my colleagues, 

dear guests, It is indeed a special 

honour for me to greet you this evening on 

behalf of the government of the Republic of 

Serbia and the Ministry of Health. 

The first 80 years of Yugoslav Association 

for Research and Fight against Cancer, succeeded 

by the Serbian Society for Fight 

against Cancer arouse pride among people 

who have a lot to remember. 

When in 1927 \or|e Joannovi} started 

out with the establishment of the big 

Yugoslav Association, which was to deal with 

research and fight against cancer, it was an 

act of a pioneer and a visionary. 

During twenties, Professor Joannovi} 

abandoned his prosperous position of a Head 

of Pathological Anatomy Department at the 

Vienna University, and joined the small team 

of enthusiasts who stared the foundation of 

Medical School within the University of

Beogradu. Doneo je veliko znawe i rezultate 

jednog od najve}ih patologa svog vremena. 

U najpoznatijoj kwizi tog doba iz 

patologije, profesora Pika, poglavqe: 

„Bojewe preparata”, upravo je obradio 

\or|e Joannovi}. 

On je svojim samopregorom i entuzijazmom, 

zaraznim u to vreme, obezbedio da se 

sagradi zgrada Instituta za patologiju, 

koja je tada bila jedna od tri najmodernije 

u Evropi, zajedno sa londonskom i 

be~kom. 

I dan danas mi u~imo patologiju svoje 

studente u toj istoj zgradi. I u aoli te 

zgrade nalazi se bista \or|a Joannovi}a. 

Tokom 80 godina Dru{tvu je bila 

namewena te{ka i odgovorna misija da 

izu~ava i da suzbija rak koliko god je to 

mogu}e, da se suprotstavqa bolesti sa 

kojom se vi{e decenija borimo na 

razli~ite na~ine, a i danas za mnoge od 

tih bolesti ne moèmo re}i da im znamo 

uzrok. I danas, naàlost, bez obzira na 

sva dostignu}a tehnologije, na mnogo ve}a 

znawa koja imamo, danas su pre svega 

bolesti srca i krvnih sudova, ali odmah 

posle wih ~etvrtina svih uzroka smrti na 

Evropskom kontinentu su maligne bolesti. 

ûvawe zdravqa, wegovo unapre|ewe, 

otkrivawe bolesti kad god je mogu}e u 

najranijoj mogu}oj fazi i wihovo izle- 

~ewe, misija je koja je ostala ista ne samo 

ovih nekoliko desetina godina, ve} moè 

se re}i nekoliko vekova. Za nekoliko 

dana u Srbiji obeleì}emo osam vekova 

prve bolnice. Godine 1207. u manastiru 

„Studenica” Sveti Sava je zapo~eo bolni~ki 

sistem u Srbiji koji i dan danas 

razvijamo. 

Bez obzira na velike lomove, Jugoslovensko 

dru{tvo za izu~avawe i suzbijawe 

raka i Dru{tvo Srbije za borbu protiv 

raka prolazilo je kroz velike probleme. 

Danas, mo`da mnogo vi{e nego ranije, 

imamo potpuno jasnu svest. Sa rakom se ne 

moè izboriti samo onkolo{ka struka. 

Danas je onkolog svaki lekar. Svaki lekar 

mora da ima znawe o tome da je primarna 

prevencija ono {to moè potpuno da 

spre~i bolest i da je razgovor sa boles-

and achievements of one of the greatest 

pathologists of his time. 

It was \or|e Joannovi} who elaborated 

the Chapter called "Marking of preparations" 

in the most renowned book of pathology, 

of the time, written by professor Pick. 

He was the one who, engaging his self-sacrifice 

and enthusiasm, which was contagious 

at the time, brought to life the construction of 

the Pathology Institute, which was then 

among three most up to date buildings in 

Europe together with the ones located in 

London and Vienna. 

To this date, we have been studying 

pathology and teaching our students in the 

same building. This building has the bust of 

\or|e Joannovi} placed in its assembly hall. 

During the former 80 years activities of 

this Association, which was given the hard 

and responsible mission, to research and fight 

cancer using all of its capacities, to suppress 

the disease which we have been combating 

for several decades, in a variety of ways, without 

being in a position to even today, ascertain 

its origin. Even today, unfortunately, 

despite of all the achievements in the field of 

technology, and much improved knowledge, 

we have the situation that one fourth of all 

the death causes on the European continent 

are malignant diseases, right after the heart 

and blood vessel diseases. 

Preservation of health, its improvement, 

and successful disease diagnostics whenever 

possible and in its earliest phase and finding 

the proper cure remains our ever lasting mission, 

not only during these past decades, but 

throughout centuries. In couple of days in 

Serbia we will be celebrating its eight centuries 

of the first hospital establishment. In 

1207, in Studenica Monastery, St Sava built 

the first hospital system in Serbia, which we 

have been developing up to the present day. 

Regardless of the hardship which the 

Yugoslav Association for Research and Fight 

against Cancer and the Serbian Society for 

Fight against Cancer went through, they 

endured enormous problems. 

Today, maybe more than ever, we have 

become fully aware of the reality. Cancer 

cannot be defeated by oncological work 

alone. Every single doctor is an oncologist, 

today. Each and every doctor has to be

sekundarna prevencija podrazumeva da 

ta~no znamo da postoje bolesti koje, ako 

otkrijemo rano, moèmo potpuno da 

izle~imo. Tako da moèmo suzbijati rak i 

onda kada mu ne znamo uzrok, moèmo 

izvestiti na{e bolesnike, pove}ati im 

kvalitet ìvota i kona~no, uraditi ono 

{to nam je glavna misija: unaprediti 

zdravqe gra|ana Srbije. Zbog toga ovaj 

posao radimo sa ciqem da budemo pravi 

onkolozi {iroke orijentacije. 

Osnivawe Jugoslovenskog dru{tva za 

izu~avawe i suzbijawe raka, a potom 

Dru{tva Srbije za borbu protiv raka, 

bilo je usmereno na jedan veliki plemeniti 

ciq, a to je da se u dràvi stvori alijansa 

za borbu protiv raka. 

Mi smo danas, krajem 2007. godine, u 

situaciji da Dru{tvo posle prvih 80 godina 

zapo~iwe slede}i period, kroz narednih 

ko zna koliko desetina i stotina godina. 

U 2008. godini Srbija ima svoj program 

koji }e da se zove ne samo: „Srbija 

protiv raka”, nego koji }e biti osnova za 

pravu nacionalnu alijansu. 

Nekoliko godina aktivnosti podrazumevalo 

je najpre ne{to {to je bilo 

logi~no: popraviti ono {to je pokvareno, 

kupiti ono {to je neophodno, i u~initi 

prostore dostojanstvenim za le~ewe i za 

rad u tim ustanovama. 

Slede}i korak je, svakako, posle potpuno 

jasnih i dokumentovanih analiza: 

~ekaju nas nacionalni programi koje 

moramo ostvariti. 

Evropa protiv raka je od 1985. do 2000. 

godine uspela da smawi smrtnost za skoro 

10%. Ta aktivnost je nemogu}a ako to radi 

samo dràva, ako radi samo Ministarstvo 

zdravqa, ako rade samo profesori, ako 

rade samo bolnice, sestre, zaposleni u 

zdravstvenim ustanovama. To je mogu}e 

jedino ako celo dru{tvo shvati da je 

borba i suprotstavqawe raku zajedni~ki 

izazov. 

Moète imati najuspe{nije ekonomske 

projekte, moète biti i razvijeniji, za 

ugled, ako nema ko u zdravstvu da radi na 

tome {to napravite, na tome {to je inve- 

knowledgeable about the fact that the primary 

prevention may fully prevent the disease 

and that the dialogue with the affected 

person represents the first step which is 

obligatory in an every day work. 

Every practitioner is also an oncologist, 

because the secondary prevention presupposes 

that we are undoubtedly aware of having 

diseases which, if discovered early 

enough, may be fully cured. This means that 

we are able to fight cancer even when we do 

not know its cause, we may inform our 

patients, enhance their life quality and eventually, 

accomplish what is our major mission, 

and that is, to improve the health of Serbian 

population, which is why we are doing this 

job, and be real oncologists of a broader perception. 

Foundation of the Yugoslav Association 

for Research and Fight against Cancer and 

Serbian Society for Fight against Cancer was 

inspired by a huge and noble intention of creating 

the national alliance in combating cancer. 

Today, at the end of 2007, we have the situation 

of our Society entering a new period 

in which, after the foregoing 80 years, we are 

ahead of the next dozens and hundreds of 

years, where as of 2008, Serbia will have its 

own program, which will not only be called 

"Serbia against cancer" but also be the basis 

for the real national alliance. 

Following several years of activities, 

which relied on most logical commitments, 

which was, to repair the damage, purchase 

what was necessary and make the facilities 

more dignifying for providing medical service 

and conducting work. 

Indeed, the next step is to draft national 

programs, after fully clear and documented 

analyses, which we will have to accomplish. 

In the period 1985 - 2000, in course of its 

combat against cancer, Europe managed to 

reduce the death incidence by nearly 10%. 

Such activity would not be attainable with 

the sole involvement of a state, if it only 

assumed the engagement of the Ministry of 

health, professors, hospitals, nurses, and staff 

working in health institutions. This is achievable 

only when the society realizes that the 

fight and combat against cancer is a joint 

challenge.

You may have most successful economic 

projects, you may be ranked among the 

developed countries, set an example to other, 

but if you have nobody to work on what you 

have built up, on what you invested into, than 

you have lost your historical battle. 

Serbia today is on the milestone: to invest 

into health and health service, actually means 

to invest into sustainable economic development. 

I wish to congratulate to you the first 80 

years. Our sources and roots are firm and 

strong and committing, and \or|e Joannovi} 

and many other generations of our tutors, are 

watching us tonight from somewhere, wandering 

if it is possible that still, one fourth of 

Serbian population is dying from cancer? It 

is. And this is something that we can and 

must change.

Aktivnost Dru{tva za borbu protiv 

raka postaje sve zna~ajnija iz slede}ih 

razloga. Broj obolelih od kancera se dramati~no 

pove}ava uglavnom iz dva razloga. 

Zbog ubrzanog starewa stanovni{tva, 

a starewe je jedan od najzna~ajnijih faktora 

rizika. Godine 2005. u Evropi je umiralo 

oko milion qudi od raka, a pret-

gentlemen, I would like to greet you all on 

behalf of the Serbian Academy of Science 

and Arts, and in particular, on behalf of 

Nikola Hajdin, the member of Academy, to 

congratulate you for this significant jubilee, 

the 80th anniversary of the Serbian Society 

for Fight against Cancer and to wish to you 

even more success in your noble mission. 

Let me use the opportunity to add couple 

of word. 

The activities of the Society for Fight 

against Cancer is continuingly becoming 

more significant, due to the fact that the 

number of people affected by cancer is dramatically 

increasing, mainly because of for 

two reasons: 

Accelerated aging rate among our population, 

and aging is one of the critical factors of 

risk. In 2005, about one million people died 

of cancer in Europe, and in 2015, it is expect-

pre svega, hemijskim kancerogenim otpadom. 

Zahvaquju}i izuzetno brzom razvoju

tehnologija koje generi{u glavninu 

eksperimentalnih podataka, postiù se 

veoma zna~ajni uspesi u razumevawu 

prirode ovih oboqewa. Ali zbog prirode, 

zbog stohasti~ke prirode malignog 

procesa kancer ostaje i daqe velika enigma 

i ne moèmo re}i da smo kona~no 

dobili bitku protiv kancera. To moèmo 

re}i tek ako budemo u stawu da le~imo 

wegov metastazni oblik koji je uzrok 

smrti u 90% slu~ajeva. 

Me|utim, nove mo}ne metodologije 

omogu}ile su izuzetan uspeh na nekom drugom 

planu, na ranom otkrivawu bolesti, 

kada je uspeh le~ewa izvanredan. 

Zakqu~ak je jasan: i pored velikog 

uspeha nauke, prevencija i rano otkrivawe 

oboqewa su i danas najve}i garanti 

uspeha. 

To nam daje za pravo da kaèmo da je rak 

izle~iva bolest. I ba{ u vezi s tim 

skre}em pa`wu na platformu o nastupawu 

Dru{tva za borbu protiv raka. Tu je 

wihova uloga od izuzetnog zna~aja.

4% more. 

The second reason is the environmental 

pollution, first of all the chemical cancerogenic 

waste. 

Due to extremely fast development of biomedical 

sciences, and first of all, new technologies 

generating the majority of experimental 

data, we have achieved comparable 

success in understanding the nature of these 

diseases. However, due to their very nature, 

the stochastic pattern of the malignant 

process, cancer still remains big enigma and 

we cannot say that we finally won the battle 

against it. We will be able to say that only at 

the point when we will be capable of curing 

its metastatic form, which is the cause of 

death in 90% of cases. 

However, new powerful methodologies 

proved to be extraordinarily successful in 

another field, that is, early detection of disease, 

in case of which the rate of successful 

curing is outstanding. 

The conclusion is clear, and in spite of 

great achievements of science, the prevention 

and early detection of diseases are the 

best guarantors of success. 

This gives us the right to say that cancer is 

a curable disease. In this respect, let me draw 

your attention to the platform for actions of 

the Society for Fight against Cancer. In this 

segment, their play the key role. 

Dissemination of information about early 

signs of malignant diseases, in particular 

those which are most common, and let me 

emphasise, helping individuals to overcome 

fear from having the medical check up, are 

something that this society puts in the same 

rank as health services. 

This should be acknowledged by all the 

relevant entities who should abundantly and 

continuingly support the Society of Serbia in 

its fight against cancer, because the results of 

their work, will turn our to be manifold beneficial.

you on behalf of the Serbian Medical Society. 

Professor îkari}, to you and your associates 

and members of the Serbian Society for 

Fight against Cancer, I wish to congratulate 

this jubilee. Let me express my respect for 

the overall work you accomplished so far, in 

fighting this malignant disease. 

I also much appreciate your cooperation 

with Serbian Medical Society, which increases 

the number of entities who keep tackling 

the problem which is the matter of our discussion. 

At this Academy Ceremony, I decided to 

speak about a man, as a being who acts 

against himself, against his future, human civilization, 

having a double-natured personality, 

internally confronted and very dangerous. 

A man does not like wars, however, he 

leads them, he wishes to be healthy, but fails

U svojoj dugogodi{woj istoriji ~ovek 

se radi zadovoqewa svojih ìvotnih 

potreba koristio prirodnim izvorima. 

Wegov uticaj na prirodu u po~etku je bio 

naznatan i pasivan. Me|utim, sa napretkom 

i razvojem proizvodnih sredstava 

i odnosa wegov uticaj na prirodu postaje 

aktivan i po svojim posledicama po wu 

razara~ki. Takav odnos ~oveka prema 

okolini prate i druge pojave koje bi 

mogle ugroziti, pa ~ak i uni{titi, ne 

samo ìvot nego i uslove za normalno 

odvijawe ìvota na Zemqi. Tako se ~ovek 

na{ao u situaciji da ima najve}u odgovornost 

u pogledu o~uvawa ìvotne sredine, 

a time i zdravqa. 

Zato sada nagla{avam odnos ~oveka i 

prirode, naru{avawe ekolo{ke ravnoteè, 

zaga|enost ìvotne sredine i 

pojave koje ugroàvaju zdravqe ~oveka pa 

se time pojavquju i kao zna~ajni uzroci za 

pojavu raka, ako izuzmemo ono {to jo{ 

uvek ne znamo o ovoj bolesti. 

Savremeni na~in ìvota se karakteri{e 

permanentnim stresom, ìvotom u 

uslovima zaga|ene ìvotne sredine ({to 

se posebno odnosi na ìvot u gradovima), 

naru{enom ekolo{kom ravnoteòm, 

nepravilnom ishranom, nedovoqnom 

fizi~kom aktivno{}u, novim oblicima 

zavisnosti, hroni~nom intoksikacijom i 

ostalim {tetnim faktorima po zdravqe. 

Mi smo danas u situaciji da udi{emo 

zaga|en vazduh, pijemo nezdravu vodu, jedemo 

genetski modifikovanu hranu, hranu 

sa aditivima, hranu u ~ijoj se proizvodwi 

koriste ve{ta~ka |ubriva i pesticidi. 

Okruèni smo otpadnim materijama, 

zemqi{te je zaga|eno, velike reke su preplavqene 

{tetnim materijama. 

Sa tehni~ko-tehnolo{kim razvojem 

koji je pra}en razvojem ostalih infrastrukturnih 

delatnosti, pre svega saobra}aja 

i urbanizma, pove}ava se broj i 

vrsta zaga|iva~a. Stalni porast kori{- 

}ewa resursa izaziva znatne transformacije 

i kvalitativne promene ìvotne sredine. 

Sagorevawem ~vrstih i fosilnih 

goriva i pri raznim tehnolo{kim proces-

conditions to manage that. 

What is it that a modern man fails to see, 

or recognize, and refers to the prevention of 

disease and leading the healthy life? 

In his long history, man has been using 

natural resources to satisfy his living needs. 

Originally his influence on nature was 

insignificant and passive. 

However, along with the progress and 

development of means of production and 

production relations, man's influence on 

nature became active and its consequences 

upon nature, turned out to be destructive. 

Such treatment of environment stirred up 

other incidents which may endanger, and 

even destroy not only the living, but also the 

conditions for leading normal life on Earth. 

Thus a man found himself in a position to 

have the greatest responsibility for the 

preservation of environment, and consequently 

the health. 

That is why I emphasize the relation of 

man and nature, disruption of ecological balance, 

pollution and incidents jeopardizing 

human health, which eventually became crucial 

reasons for the incidence of cancer, if we 

put aside what we still do not know about this 

disease. 

The modern way of living imposes permanent 

stress, living conditions affected by pollution, 

in particular in the cities, disrupted 

ecological balance, poor feeding habits, 

insufficient physical activities, new forms of

Today, we came to the point where we 

breathe the polluted air, drink unhealthy 

water, eat genetically modified food, food 

containing additives, food produced using 

artificial fertilizers and pesticides, we are 

exposed to waste, the soil is polluted, big 

rivers loaded with hazardous substances. 

Along with technical and technological 

development, which is followed by the development 

of other activities related to infrastructure, 

first of all traffic and urban development, 

the types of polluters keep increasing. 

Constant increase in the use of resources 

causes significant transformation and quality 

changes to the living environment.

Negde u ovim relacijama treba tra- 

ìti uzroke nastanka raka, makar oni 

bili faktori rizika za qude sa predispozicijom. 

Shvataju}i da ste spoznali sve 

te probleme i da ste svesni da su oni uzroci 

mnogih bolesti ~oveka, vi ste se opredelili 

za borbu protiv raka i u va{oj 

koncepciji delovawa uvek polazite upravo 

od tih problema. Svojim opredelewem, 

programom, aktuelno{}u, sadràjima, 

stvorili ste snaàn front svih onih 

~inilaca neophodnih za va{ prepoznatqiv 

rad. 

Jo{ jednom, zadovoqstvo mi je {to 

mogu da vam ~estitam jubilej.

Man's acts upon nature by changing it. 

The consequences are the misbalance of the

whereby the natural living conditions 

are being seriously jeopardized. 

Instead of trying to obtain better knowledge 

about the nature and the natural laws, 

man started with destroying and polluting it. 

He is now facing the crisis which is harder to 

solve, than any other crisis that humankind 

experienced during their history. Any 

changes have their duration and anything 

that is subject to changes has its limit of 

endurance, up to which they may be a|usted 

in various ways, but what is to happen after? 

The Earth and people, as one global eco system, 

are getting dangerously closer to those 

limits. 

Somewhere in those relations, we should 

search for the origins of cancer, even if they 

prove to be the risk factors for people with 

predisposition. 

Having realised that you apprehended all 

these problems and being aware that they are 

the cause of many human diseases, you eventually 

decided to fight cancer and in your 

concept of action, you start from the very 

problem. Here I am primarily addressing the 

Society, the jubilee of which we are here to 

celebrate. With your program of activities, by 

which you keep up with modern trends and 

events, you created a strong foundation using 

all the elements vital for your recognizable 

work. 

Once again, let me say that I have the 

great pleasure to congratulate you on your 

jubilee.

veliko mi je zadovoqstvo {to mogu da vam 

se obratim u ime Akademije medicinskih 

nauka Srpskog lekarskog dru{tva, koja se 

intenzivno bavi i pitawem malignih 

tumora od homo sapijensa. Zadovoqstvo 

mi je {to mogu da se osvrnem na 80 godina 

plodnog i izuzetno korisnog rada 

Dru{tva Srbije za borbu protiv raka. Za 

po~etak, posle 80 godina (od daleke 1927.) 

moèmo da konstatujemo da po{ast koja 

postoji me|u nama, koja se {iri ve} 80 

godina, preti da ozbiqno ugrozi razvoj 

qudske vrste. Danas kada razgovaramo o 

tih 80 godina, dolazimo do saznawa da smo 

u obavezi i prema na{oj generaciji i 

prema generacijama koje dolaze, da se toj 

bolesti, toj po{asti uspe{no suprotstavimo.

Dear honourable Minister, members of 

Academy, professor îkari}, I have the great 

pleasure of addressing you on behalf of the 

Academy of Medical Science, of Serbian 

Medical Society which has been intensively 

involved in tackling the problem of malignant 

tumours since Homo Sapience, and 

being able to look back at 80 years of fruitful 

and extremely useful work of the Serbian 

Society for Fight against Cancer. Since 1927 

and after 80 years we may state that this disease 

which has spread as epidemic during this 

period, threatens to seriously undermine the 

development of humankind. Today, when we 

consider those 80 years, we come to the conclusion 

that we have the obligation before 

our generation and the generations to come, 

to win the combat against this malignant disease. 

In the attempt to accomplish this task, 

each one has his/her part of responsibility

odgovornosti i svoj deo poqa rada na 

suzbijawu i le~ewu ove te{ke bolesti. 

îwenica je da su Dru{tvo Srbije za 

borbu protiv raka i razvoj medicinske 

nauke i medicinske tehnologije omogu- 

}ili da danas postièmo relativno dobre 

rezultate u le~ewu ove bolesti. 

Isto tako, va`na je ~iwenica da se za 

ovih 80 godina otkrilo jo{ mnogo vi{e 

faktora rizika koji nam se sa razvojem 

dru{tva, industrije i tehnologije javqaju 

i prouzrokuju pojavu i nekih malignoma, 

zlo}udnih tumora, za koje smo nekada samo 

~uli da se mogu veoma retko javiti, a danas 

su svakodnevni. 

Kada znamo da se broj, na primer, 

obolelih od karcinoma plu}a, karcinoma 

dojke, karcinoma koè, prostate, koloproktalnog 

regiona iz dana u dan pove- 

}ava, onda se ozbiqno postavqa pitawe 

koji su zadaci i koje je mesto Dru{tva 

Srbije za borbu protiv raka u ovom 

sloènom poslu. To }u primerom da vam 

predstavim. 

Nekada smo bili u situaciji da nam 

vi{e od polovine èna sa karcinomom 

grli}a materice dolaze u takvoj fazi 

kada vi{e nikakva operativna metoda ne 

moè da se primeni. 

Na klinici na kojoj sam radio, mi smo 

godi{we imali i po 150 do 200 velikih 

Verthajmovih operacija za razre{ewe 

pitawa karcinoma grli}a materice. 

Me|utim, kada smo sproveli primarnu 

prevenciju, kada smo motivisali ène da 

se redovno kontroli{u i dolaze na kontrolne 

preglede, kada smo primenili 

vrlo jednostavne metode da moèmo 

otkriti maligni tumor u samom za~etku 

kada je on samo lokalnog opredeqewa i 

kada primewujemo jednu jednostavnu 

operaciju, koja treba da odstrani samo deo 

grli}a materice u kome se nalazi promena, 

da dovedemo do kompletnog izle~ewa, 

situacija se, upravo, promenila. 

I danas beleìmo pad broja velikih 

Verthajmovih operacija na godi{wem 

nivou, od 200 smawuje se na ispod 100. 

Imamo veoma veliki broj tih malih promena 

na grli}u materice koje ène osloba|aju 

bolesti da mogu posle toga da 

ra|aju.

this serious disease. The fact is that the 

Serbian Society for Fight against Cancer and 

the development of medical technologies 

enabled us today to achieve relatively good 

results in curing this disease. 

It is equally important that during the past 

80 years, much more risk factors have been 

revealed, which, side by side with the development 

of society, industry and technologies, 

emerge and cause the incidence of some 

malignomes - malignant tumours, for which 

we heard in the past that they were rare, and 

which are today rather common. 

Knowing today that the number of, for 

example, those affected by lung cancer, 

breast cancer, skin cancer, cancer of prostate, 

coloproctol region, keeps increasing day in 

day out, than one asks a serious question, 

what is the place of the Serbian Society for 

Fight against Cancer in this complex task? I 

will illustrate this with an example. In the 

past, we used to deal with the situation of 

having more than half of affected women 

referring to us in the stadium when there 

would be no chance left for having a successful 

surgery to treat cervical cancer. 

At the clinics where I worked, we had up 

to 150 to 200 extensive Wertheim surgeries 

applied as the response to the cervical cancer. 

However, the situation changed after having 

introduced the primary prevention, 

encouraged women to have regular check 

ups and applied simple methods, to detect 

any malignant tumour in its earliest phase, 

when it is only local and apply one simple 

surgery which should remove only a degenerative 

part of cervix, to lead to the full recovery. 

Currently, we have the number of 

Wertheim's surgeries gradually dropping 

each year, from 200 to below 100. We 

encounter a huge number of small degenerative 

cervical changes which we eliminate and 

enable women to give births afterwards. 

This is where I see the mission of the 

Serbian Society for Fight against Cancer - to 

encourage the population to avoid risk factors, 

suppress them and apply different methods, 

including the choice of healthy food. It is 

well known that a large number of patients 

belong to the risk groups. Also a great number 

of people become affected due to their

Prema tome, tu moèmo da postignemo 

mnogo ako rano otkrijemo malignu bolest.

u 98% slu~ajeva, samo ako se uzrok otkrije

Li~no mislim da je to uloga Dru{tva. 

Isto tako da se poveè sa bolesnicima, da 

im ukaè na mogu}nosti kvalitetnog 

ìvota i kvalitetnog le~ewa, da im se dâ 

snage da se izbore sa svojom bole{}u i da 

im vrati osmeh. Ako tako nastavimo mislim 

da }emo slaviti ne samo 80 godina 

borbe protiv raka u Srbiji nego da }emo 

slaviti i 180, i nadam se da ne}e biti 

ovakvih problema kakve danas imamo. 

Ja vam ~estitam na svemu onome {to ste 

u~inili, ~estitam {to ste okupili ovoliki 

broj qudi. Znam da ste sproveli 

veliki broj programa u Dru{tvu Srbije za 

borbu protiv raka. Morate da nastavite 

tim putem, a doktori i medicinska 

onkologija neka u~ine sve {to mogu da one 

koji su oboleli vrati vrati wihovim 

porodicama u dobrom zdravqu.

Therefore, this is the segment where we 

may achieve a lot, provided that we make an 

early diagnosis of this malignant illness. Even 

some of the diseases which used to have the 

incidence of an epidemic, with high mortality 

rate, in the past 10 years have the survival 

rate of 98%, in case of their early detection. 

I personally believe that this is what the 

role of the Society should be, along with their 

establishing connection with patients, to 

instruct them about the possibilities of leading 

a quality life and quality medical treatment, 

give them strength to overcome the 

disease return smile to their faces. If we proceed 

in such way, I am sure that we will celebrate 

not only 80 years of fight against cancer 

in Serbia, but also 180 years and I hope we 

will not be encountering the problems of 

today. 

I congratulate you for the work you have 

done so far, and for gathering so many people 

here today. I know that you introduced a 

number of programs within the Serbian 

Society for Fight against Cancer. Your have 

to continue with your work, and let the doctors 

and medical oncology do everything in 

their power to return the affected ones to 

their family, in good health.

choosing the best path for the future".

Ve} prve decenije XX veka prof. \or|e 

Joannovi}, jedini Srbin u Evropi i svetu 

u tom vremenu imao je najve}e univerzitetsko 

zvawe profesora. Zajedno sa 

velikim patologom Paltaufom i kolegom 

[tembergom kreiraju Be~ku {kolu 

patologije, vrlo poznatu u to vreme. 

Istovremeno, oni se bave i nau~noistraìva~kim 

radom u oblasti nove medicinske 

discipline − onkologije, o kojoj 

mnogi Srbi lekari toga vremena ne znaju 

gotovo ni{ta. 

Beograd 1920. godine: profesor Batut, 

higijeni~ar i profesor Suboti}, hirurg, 

osniva~i Medicinskog fakulteta u 

Beogradu, imaju velike probleme da 

prona|u nastavnike za bazi~ne predmete 

za prvu generaciju studenata. Pozivaju 

profesora Joannovi}a iz Be~a da napusti 

taj velelepni grad, da do|e na Balkan, u 

Beograd, da predaje patologiju. On se tom 

pozivu odaziva i vrlo brzo postaje dekan i 

to u ~etiri mandata i tri mandata 

prodekan. 

Already during the first decade of the XX 

century, professor \or|e Joannovi} was the 

only Serb in Europe and the world of that 

time who had the highest University title as a 

professor. Together with the great pathologist 

Paltauf and his colleague Sternberg, they 

formed the Vienna school of pathology 

which was famous at that time. 

At the same time, they are involved in scientific 

work and research in the field of new 

medical discipline, oncology, of which many 

Serbs, doctors of that time, were almost completely 

ignorant. 

Belgrade, 1920 

Professor Batut, hygienist and professor 

Suboti}, surgeon, founders of Medical School 

in Belgrade, have big difficulties in finding 

the lecturers for basic subjects for the first 

generation of students. They invite professor 

Joannovi} from Vienna, to abandon that gorgeous 

city and come to the Balkans, 

Belgrade, to teach pathology. He responds to 

the invitation and very soon, becomes a dean 

for no less than four terms of office and a 

Vice-Chancellor for three terms of office.

Institute of Pathology, which was, 

at the time, among the best buildings in the 

world. 

While still in Vienna, professor Joannovi} 

realized, and that is what makes him a great 

visionary, that cancer is a global problem of 

the XX century and that the scientific practise, 

notwithstanding its personnel, premises 

and equipment quality, cannot combat with 

such a vicious disease unless it includes all 

the segments of society, in order to try to stop 

this giant enemy, called cancer. 

At the time, already several countries formed

takvog dru{tva u Kraqevini Srba, 

Hrvata i Slovenaca i 27. septembra 1927. 

godine na Konstitutivnoj skup{tini, 

upravo se i formira Jugoslovensko 

dru{tvo za izu~avawe i suzbijawe raka. 

Izabran je upravo profesor Joannovi} za 

prvog predsednika, a generalni sekretar 

je postao wegov u~enik, dr Ksenofon 

[ahovi}, budu}i profesor i akademik. 

Pokroviteq Dru{tva bio je, kao {to smo 

~uli, kraq Aleksandar I Kara|or|evi}. 

Ciqevi Dru{tva su bili veoma ambiciozni, 

ali za ovih 80 godina svi ciqevi 

su dostignuti. 

This motivates professor Joannovi} to establish 

such association in the Kingdom of Serbs, 

Croats and Slovenians, and on 27th 

September 1927, at its constitutional assembly, 

the Yugoslav Association for Research 

and Fight against Cancer was formed. 

Professor Joannovi} was elected the first 

Chairman, and the secretary general was his 

student, Ksenofon [ahovi}, future professor 

and Academy member, and its protector was, 

as we have already heard, king Aleksandar I 

Kara|or|evi}. 

The objectives of the Association were very 

ambitious, but for the past 80 years, all of 

them plus one were achieved.

predsednik, profesor Dimitrije Anti}. 

I daqe je generalni sekretar ostao doktor 

Ksenofon [ahovi}. 

Glavni ciq Dru{tva je bio skupiti 

novac da se izgradi zgrada u kojoj }e se 

skoncentrisati svi delovi onkolo{ke 

slu`be u tada{woj Kraqevine Srba, 

Hrvata i Slovenaca (odnosno, tada je ve} 

bila Kraqevina Jugoslavija). 

Najve}i donator je bio knez Pavle, pa se 

24. septembra 1939. godine polaù temeqi 

zgrade Zavoda kneza Pavla za izu~avawe i 

suzbijawe raka u dana{woj Pasterovoj 14, 

gde je podignuta ova zgrada. 

Pokroviteq je bila kraqica Marija. 

Zgrada je zavr{ena 1941. godine. Ali 

naàlost, Dru{tvo prestaje sa radom, jer 

po~iwe rat.

The tragic death of professor Joannovi} in 

1932 brought to the election of new 

Chairman, Professor Dimitrije Anti}. Doctor 

Ksenofon [ahovi} continued to be the secretary 

general. 

The major objective of the Association was 

to collect the funds to construct the building 

wherein all the departments of oncology 

would be concentrated in the Kingdom of 

Serbs, Croats and Slovenians, i.e. which by 

that time already became the Kingdom of 

Yugoslavia. 

The biggest donor was Prince Pavle, and on 

24th September 1939, the foundations of 

Prince Pavle's Institute for fighting cancer 

were set, the address of which was Pasterova 

14, where this building was constructed. 

The protector was Queen Marija. 

The major works on the building were completed 

in 1941, but unfortunately the 

Association discontinued with the construction, 

due to the war break out.

Dvadesetogodi{wu neaktivnost Dru{tva 

prekida dr Blagoje Ne{kovi}, koji preko 

Inicijativnog odbora, ~iji je sekretar 

bio dr Jovan Pavlica, organizuje 

Konstitutivnu skup{tinu 10. decembra 

1966. godine. Na Konstitutivnoj skup{tini 

je osnovano Dru{tvo Srbije za borbu 

protiv raka, koje i danas egzistira. 

Levo: Bilo je 118 delegata, a Skup{tina je 

odràna na Beogradskom sajmu.

predloìli dr Blagoja Ne{kovi}a, koji 

je predlog odbio. Istovremeno je predloìo

The twenty-year long inactivity of the Society 

was interrupted by Dr Blagoje Ne{kovi}, 

who, through the Initiative Committee, 

whose secretary was Dr Jovan Pavlica, organizes 

the Constitutive Assembly on 10th 

December 1966, founding the Serbian 

Society for Fight against Cancer, which still 

exists.

takvih 11, a u Vojvodini 12 dru{tava.

treba? Ja na to pitawe nemam odgovor, ali 

imam primer za komparaciju. 

Irska ima isto takvo Dru{tvo. Broji 

4.000.000 stanovnika. Ima godi{wi bruto 

promet 12.000.000,00 evra i 80 stalno 

zaposlenih radnika. Dru{tvo Srbije za 

borbu protiv raka ima samo dva stalno 

zaposlena radnika.

The Chairmen of the Society, during the period 

1966 - 2007, two years later, in Vojvodina, 

form and organize the Union of Vojvodina 

Societies for Fight against Cancer. 

The municipalities organize municipal associations. 

Today, there are 11 such associations 

in Central Serbia, and 12 in Vojvodina.

since 1991 have been: supplemental postage 

stamps, donations of private and legal entities 

and endowments of material goods to the 

Society. 

Should anyone be interested in such information, 

and probably the representatives of the 

government would be interested to hear, the 

gross turnover of the Society in the past four 

to five years, was about 250,000 Euro. Is this 

a lot, a little, or exactly what it should be? I 

have no answers to that but I have some comparative 

data. 

Ireland has the same kind of Society. Its population 

is 4 million. Their annual gross 

turnover is 12 million Euro and they have 80 

permanently employed staff. The Serbian 

Society for Fight against Cancer has only 2 

permanently employed persons.

Klini~ka onkologija u svetu i Srbiji se 

bazira na tri terapijska modaliteta: 

hiru{ki no`, jonizuju}e zra~ewe i citostatici. 

Hirurgija je najstarija grana onkologije. 

Proteè se jo{ od vremena (pogledajte 

sliku Nefretete XIV vek p.n.e.) kada su 

tada{wi lekari ~ak vr{ili trepanaciju 

lobawe u ciqu odstrawewa tumora mozga. 

Malo neverovatno, ali postoje zapisi o 

tome. 

Krajem XIX veka, hiru{ka onkologija 

naro~ito dolazi do izraàja. Javqaju se 

veliki operatori, kao {to je Verthajm, 

kao {to je Halsted. Wihove operacije su i 

sto godina kasnije i daqe aktuelne. 

Radioterapija se pojavquje po~etkom XX 

veka, zahvaquju}i velikim otkri}ima 

Rendgena, Marije Sklodovske, Piera 

Kirija i wihove }erke Irene. 

Hemioterapija se pojavquje u drugoj 

polovini XX veka.

Srbiji, opet su hirurzi predwa~ili ali u 

okviru svojih hiru{kih odeqewa, bolnica, 

klinika. Pionir radiolo{ke onkologije 

u Srbiji je dr Avram Josif Vinaver, 

The clinical oncology in the World and in 

Serbia, is based on three therapy modalities: 

surgery knife, ionizing radiotherapy and 

cytostatics. 

Surgery is the earliest branch of oncology. It 

originates far back, and I placed a picture of 

Nefertiti (XIV century b. c.), when the surgeons 

of that age even carried out the trepanation 

of sculls to remove brain tumours. It 

sounds most unbelievable, but we have written 

records as a proof. 

By the end of XIX century, the surgery 

oncology came to the first plan. We have 

great surgeons during this period, such as 

Wertheim, or Halsted. Their operations are 

still, even after one hundred years, applicable. 

Radiotherapy emerged in early XX century, 

thanks to great discoveries of Roentgen, 

Maria Sklodowska, Piere Curie and their 

daughter Irene. 

Chemotherapy appeared in late XX century. 

As for the clinical oncology in Serbia, the surgeons 

again took the main role, but within 

their surgical departments, hospitals and clinics. 

The pioneer o radiological oncology in 

Serbia was Dr Avram Josif Vinaver, Polish

The first X-ray machine arrived in Belgrade 

in late XIX century. There is an X-ray picture

region of the third metacarpal bone. King 

Petar, was as it was wounded in his hand in 

1870 near Sedan, where he fought under the 

former name Petar Mrkonji}.

Dragoqub (od miqa, zvani Dragi) 

Jovanovi} dolazi iz Pariza gde je bio 

asistent Marije Kiri. Dobija zadatak da 

nabavi jedan gram radijuma iz Joahimova. 

To je rudnik u êhoslova~koj, gde su 

Kirijevi, pre toliko godina (1898) dobili 

jednu tonu prera|ene rude i izdvojili 

radijum. Tako su postali velikani i 

osvojili ve~nu slavu. 

Na{ fizi~ar je doneo jedan gram radijuma, 

podelio ga Beogradu, Zagrebu, Qubqani, 

a dr Dimitrije Miodragovi} je 

izvr{io prvu aplikaciju radijumom u 

podru~je tumora grli}a materice 1932. 

godine. I tada se javqa drugi zavod u istoj 

zgradi, Zavod za radijum-terapiju. Ova dva 

zavoda }e 1947. godine da se integri{u u 

Radiolo{ki institut Medicinskog fakulteta. 

Neposredno posle rata, velike zasluge za 

razvoj radiolo{ke onkologije imaju profesor 

Ga|anski i profesor Aleksandar 

Simi}. Prvi u oblasti tzv. ortovolta`ne 

radio-terapije (kada se primewuje rendgenska 

cev i H zraci), a profesor Simi} u 

In 1927, our great physicist professor 

Dragoljub, more known under his nick name 

Dragi Jovanovi} arrives from Paris where he 

was the assistant to Maria Curie. He was 

given a task to provide one gram of radium 

from Jachymov. Jachymov was a mine in 

Czechoslovakia, wherefrom the Curies, many 

years before, (in 1898) obtained one ton of 

pitchblende ore from which they isolated 

radium, which led this couple to eternity and 

glory. 

Our physicist brought one gram of radium, 

distributed it between Belgrade, Zagreb and 

Ljubljana, and Dr Dimitrije Miodragovi} was 

the first to apply the radium on the uterine 

tumour, in 1932. Later, the second Institute 

was founded in the same building the 

Institute for radium therapy. These two 

Institutes will in 1947, integrate into one, 

Radiology Institute of the Medical School. 

Immediately after the war, great credit 

belongs to Professor Ga|anski and Professor 

Aleksandar Simi}, were the first ones in the 

field of so called orthovoltage radiotherapy 

applying X-ray tube and X-rays, and 

Professor Simi} in the field of radium therapy, 

or brachytherapy using radium.

ulazi u Pasterovu 14 i otvara Laboratoriju 

za eksperimentalnu onkologiju. 

U Radiolo{kom institutu, dakle, institutu 

integrisanom od dva zavoda veliki 

doprinos radio-terapiji daje primarijus 

Vladeta Popovi}, francuski |ak, koji je u 

jednom mandatu bio i predsednik Dru{tva 

Srbije za borbu protiv raka. 

Profesor Sava Simi} 1950. godine 

otvara Hiru{ko odeqewe koje se spaja sa 

Laboratorijom i registruje se 1956. 

godine novi Institut u Pasterovoj 14. − 

Onkolo{ki institut. Sada imamo dva 

instituta: Radiolo{ki i onkolo{ki 

institut.

After the war, we obtained another 10 grams 

of radium from the same mine in 

Czechoslovakia, and shared it equally 

between Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana and 

continued with operations in the same field 

of radiotherapy (brachytherapy). 

In 1948, Dr Ksenofon [ahovi} joins 

Pasterova 14 and opens the Laboratory for 

experimental oncology. In the Radiological 

institute, the integrated Institute comprising 

two institutes - the great contribution to 

radio therapy was given by Chief Physician 

Vladeta Popovi}, a French student who held 

one term of office as the Chairman of the 

Serbian Society for Fight against Cancer 

In 1950, Professor Sava Simi} opens the 

Surgical Department, which merges with the 

Laboratory and in 1956, registers the new 

Institute in Pasterova 14 - the Institute of 

Oncology. There are two institutes at the 

moment: Institute of Radiology and Institute 

of Oncology.

U Radiolo{kom institutu va`na godina 

je 1960, kada se nabavqa „kobalt bomba”, 

kako se popularno zove. Radilo se o izotopskoj 

ma{ini. To je veliki zaokret u 

radio-terapiji Srbije i Balkana (ako 

ho}ete) jer to je novi metod u zra~ewu 

pacijenta. To je bio vaàn doga|aj, toliko 

vaàn da je tada{wi potpredsednik 

Savezne dràve, Aleksandar Rankovi}, 

otvorio ovo odeqewe. 

Profesor Aleksije Milosavqevi} 1958. 

godine otvara Interno odeqewe u 

Pasterovoj i prikqu~uje ga Onkolo{kom 

institutu, a za to vreme mladi doktori 

Milo{ Bekerus i Smiqa Pendi} 

ukqu~uju u klini~ku praksu ve{ta~ke 

radio-izotope. Do tada je bio radijum, 

sada prelazimo na ve{ta~ke radio-izotope 

u brahiterapiji. 

Godine 1970. veliki autoriteti u oblasti 

radiolo{ke onkologije Srbije: Merka{, 

Brzakovi}, Vujni} otvaraju Odeqewe 

Betatrona, generatora jonizuju}eg zra- 

~ewa. Wegova maksimalna energija generisanih 

H zraka i elektrona iznosi 42 miliona 

elektovolti. To je najja~a ma{ina 

koja je ikada i igde ukqu~ena u klini~ku 

praksu. To je bio Betatron. 

Od toga vremena po~iwe moderna radioterapija 

Beograda, odnosno Srbije. 

As for the Institute of Radiology, the year to 

remember is 1960, when the so-called 'cobalt 

bomb' was purchased. It was an isotopic 

machine. This was a significant turn in the 

radio therapy in Serbia and the Balkans, 

since it represented a new method in X-ray 

treatment of patients. This event was given 

such an importance, that its Department was 

opened by then-Vice President of the state, 

Aleksandar Rankovi}. 

In 1958, Professor Aleksije Milosavljevi} 

opens the Medical Ward Department in 

Pasterova street which joins the Institute of 

Oncology, while at the same time, young doctors 

Milo{ Bekerus and Smilja Pendi} introduce 

in the clinical practice the artificial 

radio isotopes in brachytherapy. 

In 1970, a great authority in the field of radiology 

oncology of Serbia: Merka}, 

Brzakovi}, Vujni} are opening the Department 

in Betetron, generator of ionizing radiation 

with maximum energy of generated X 

rays and electrons accounts for 42 million 

electric volts. This was the most powerful 

machine that has ever been used in the clinical 

practise. Its name was Betatron. 

This event denotes the beginning of the modern 

radio therapy in Belgrade - Serbia.

Krajem sedme i po~etkom osme decenije 

Onkolo{ki institut vode profesori: 

Ivan Popovi}-\ani, a zatim doktor 

Blagoje Ne{kovi}, koji daje ime onkolo{kom 

institutu „Ksenofon [ahovi}.” 

Ima raznih nesporazuma povodom ovog 

imena. Kako sam bio u tim vremenima na 

licu mesta, znam {ta se de{avalo u ovom 

Institutu. Gore u Radiolo{kom institutu 

ovi qudi kreiraju modernu radio-terapiju 

u Srbiji. 

Godine 1974. uvodi se u radiolo{ku 

onkologiju Instituta brahiterapijski 

sistem sa radionuklidima visoke radioaktivnosti. 

To je bila velika revolucija 

u svetu i u Beogradu u oblasti 

brahiterapije i vrlo brzo Beograd }e 

postati reperna institucija za ovaj vid 

radioterapije malignoma ginekolo{ke 

regije u svetu.

By the end of the seventh and the beginning 

of the eighth decade, the Institute of 

Oncology was headed by Professor Ivan 

Popovi} \ani, and later, Dr Blagoje Ne{kovi}, 

who named this Institute “Ksenofon 

[ahovi}”. 

There were a number of misunderstandings 

with respect to this name. Since I was present 

there during that period, I was aware of what 

was going on in this Institute. In the Institute 

of Radiology up there, these people are creating 

the modern radio therapy in Serbia. 

The brachytherapy system with radionucleides 

of high radioactivity was introduced in 

the radiological oncology of the Institute, in 

1974. This represented a great revolution in 

the world and in Belgrade, in the field of 

brachytherapy and pretty soon, Belgrade was 

to become the benchmark for such type of 

radiotherapy of malignomes of ginecologial 

region in the world.

Dva instituta zajedno su u istoj zgradi, 

bave se istim problemima, ali nikako da 

se integri{u u jednu ustanovu. Poku{aji 

dugi 40 godina bili su bezuspe{ni. 

U monografiji „80 godina borbe protiv 

raka u Srbiji” sam poku{ao izneti razloge 

tom neuspehu. Kada je u Radiolo{ki 

institut do{ao poslovodni odbor (doc. dr 

Jovan Lazi}, dr Slobodan îkari}, 

Angelina Miqkovi}), ubedili smo radiologe 

da se integri{emo sa Onkolo{kim 

institutom. To se desilo 1979. godine i mi 

smo novom institutu dali ime Institut 

za onkologiju i radiologiju. 

Na ~elo ovog integrisanog instituta 

dolazi primarijus Kuzman Grani} ~iji je 

mandat trajao dve godine, a zatim doktor 

Nikola Mitrovi} ~iji je mandat trajao 18 

godina. Prvo je integrisan ovaj institut 

sa Univerzitetskim klini~kim centrom, 

a zatim deset godina kasnije dolazi do 

dezintegracije i Institut postaje ponovo 

samostalna radna organizacija pod 

imenom: Institut za onkologiju i radiologiju 

Srbije, upravo onako kako se i 

danas zove. 

Posle Nikole Mitrovi}a dolazi mladi 

docent, sada profesor Nenad Borojevi}. 

The two institutes, together in one building, 

are dealing with the same problems, but they 

never managed to integrate. Forty years of 

attempts to merge these two institutes were 

futile. 

In my book, I tried to disclose the reasons for 

this failure. When the managing board was 

constituted in the Institute of Radiology, 

(Senior Lecturer Dr Jovan Lazi}, Dr 

Slobodan îkari}, Angelina Miljkovi}), we 

persuaded the radiologists to integrate with 

the Institute of Oncology, which eventually 

took place in 1979. We named it the Institute 

for Oncology and Radiology. 

Such integrated Institute was headed by the 

Chief Physician Kuzman Grani}, whose term 

of office lasted two years, and later Dr Nikola 

Mitrovi}, whose term of office lasted 18 

years. 

This Institute was initially integrated with the 

University Clinical Centre, and ten years 

later, the Institute disintegrated and again, 

became an independent organization under 

the name: Institute for Oncology and 

Radiology of Serbia, under which it is known 

until today. 

Nikola Mitrovi} was succeeded by a young 

Senior Lecturer, now a Professor, Nenad

zaposlenih radnika dominira Beograd 

i Novi Sad.

Today, we have five Centers for oncology 

and radiology: in Novi Sad, Belgrade,

The structure of medical staff, according to 

their education is: University degree, PhDs, 

lecturers and scientists. These charts show 

that Belgrade and Novi Sad are far ahead 

with respect to the mentioned qualifications 

of the medical staff.

Klini~ki materijal u ovim institutima: 

radiolo{ka onkologija, hirur{ka onkologija, 

medikalna onkologija. U ~etiri 

instituta najve}i klini~ki materijal 

(broj le~enih pacijenata tokom 2006. 

godine) pripada radiolo{koj onkologiji. 

Sem u Novom Sadu, ako su podaci koje su 

kolege dostavili ta~ni, tu je na ~elu medikalna 

onkologija. 

Me|utim onkologijom se u Beogradu i 

Srbiji bave i druge zdravstvene ustanove, 

u prvom redu Klini~ki centar Srbije, 

koji ima verovatno najve}i klini~ki 

materijal kada je re~ o hiru{koj onkologiji, 

zatim je tu Vojnomedicinska 

akademija koja se jedina, pored Instituta, 

bavi sa sva tri terapijska modaliteta: i 

raditerapijom, i hiru{kom i medikalnom 

onkologijom. 

I drugi klini~ko-bolni~ki centri i 

klinike u Beogradu, tako|e se bave onkologijom, 

ali samo hirur{kom i medikalnom 

onkologijom. 

The clinical material in these institutes: radiation 

oncology, surgery oncology medical 

oncology. In four institutes, the biggest clinical 

material (number of treated patients during 

2006) belongs to radiation oncology, 

aside from Novi Sad, where, if the information 

provided by our colleagues is correct, it 

is headed by medical oncology. 

However, other medical institutions in 

Belgrade and Serbia are also dealing with 

oncology, first of all the Clinical Centre of 

Serbia, which probably has the most extensive 

clinical material regarding the surgical 

oncology, with Military Medical Academy to 

follow, being the only one, besides the 

Institute, dealing with three therapy modalities: 

radiotherapy, surgical and medical 

oncology. 

There are other clinical and hospital centres 

in Belgrade dealing with oncology, but they 

practise only surgical and medical oncology.

onkologijom i jednu tre}inu celokupnog 

klini~kog materijala, pribli`no, 

pokrivaju onkolo{ki dispanzeri (ovu 

tvrdwu smo bazirali na podacima dobijenim 

upravo od onkolo{kih dispanzera). 

Imamo dvadeset onkolo{kih dispanzera u 

centralnoj Srbiji i sedam u Vojvodini. 

Angaòvawem nacionalnog buxeta u 

onkologiji Srbije, samo po dva parametra 

smo mogli da prikaèmo ovaj trend, drugi 

na~in nismo mogli da prona|emo. 

Radiolo{ka onkologija ima lek koji se 

zove jonizuju}e zra~ewe, to jest generatore 

jonizuju}eg zra~ewa za koje se daju 

novci, a medikalna onkologija ima citostatike. 

Radiolo{ka onkologija pokriva oko 

pedeset posto klini~kog materijala u 

Srbiji. Milion evra godi{we se tro{i u 

Srbiji na taj lek koji se zove jonizuju}e 

zra~ewe, a medikalna onkologija tro{i 

otprilike (2004.) devet i po, (2005.) 

jedanaest, (2006.) devetnaest, (2007.) dvadeset 

pet miliona evra. Ova diskrepanca 

izme|u cene ko{tawa jednog i drugog leka 

posebno treba da zainteresuje one koji 

vode politiku onkologije u Srbiji.

Oncology out-patient Departments are practising 

medical oncology and approximately 

one third of the total clinical material are 

being covered by oncology out-patient 

Departments (this information is based on 

the data received from those oncology outpatient 

departments). 

We have twenty oncology out-patient departments 

in Central Serbia and seven in 

Vojvodina. 

As for the national budget contribution for 

the oncology of Serbia, there are only two 

parameters we were able to use to show this 

trend, since there were no other indicators 

we could track. 

Radiation oncology has the cure which is 

called ionizing radiation, i.e. generators of 

ionizing radiation which has to be funded, 

while medical oncology uses cytostatics. 

Radiation oncology covers about fifty percent 

of clinical material in Serbia. Annually, 

millions of Euros have been spent in Serbia 

for this cure known as ionizing radiation and 

medical oncology spends approximately (in 

2004) nine and a half, (in 2005) eleven (in 

2006) nineteen, (in 2007) twenty-five million 

Euros. This discrepancy between the price of 

one and another cure should seriously attract 

attention of those who manage the oncology 

policy in Serbia.

onkologiji zemaqa u tranziciji i 

Balkana: na osnovu podataka koji su se 

slili na konferenciju ESTRO (Gliwice, 

Poqska, 2004. godine), napravili smo ove 

dijagrame. Ovo se odnosi na kadrove: 

lekare, fizi~are, radilo{ke tehni~are. 

Kao {to vidimo, mi smo prvi na Balkanu, 

ali smo posledwi me|u zemqama u tranziciji: 

Ma|arska, ê{ka, Poqska, Litvanija, 

Slovenija. Prvi u selu, posledwi u 

gradu. To je pomalo i filozofsko pitawe. 

I to pitawe uop{te ne bi brinulo (prvi 

na Balkanu, zar to nije dosta za Srbiju?). 

Ali s obzirom da ja 40 godina radim u 

onkologiji Srbije, znam vremena kada je 

radiolo{ka onkologija bila i ispred 

ovih zemaqa u tranziciji. To je fakat i o 

tome treba da povedemo ra~una. 

Desno: To isto se odnosi i na opremu. 

Opet smo negde prvi na Balkanu, posledwi 

me|u zemqama u tranziciji. 

Postavqa se pitawe: kakve je rezultate 

onkologija Srbije postizala? Rezultati

Balkans: we made these diagrams taking into 

account the data which were gathered at the 

ESTRO conference in Gliwice, Poland, in 

2004. It refers to the staff: doctors, physicists, 

radiology technologists. 

As we may see, we are first in Balkans, but 

last among the countries in transition: 

Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania 

and Slovenia. So, first in the village but last in 

the city. This may be put as a philosophical 

question. 

And this question should not concern us, to 

be the first in the Balkans, isn't this enough 

for Serbia? However, considering that I have 

been working in the field of oncology in 

Serbia for 40 years, I witnessed the times 

when radiation oncology used to be ahead 

these countries in transition. This is the fact, 

and this is something we should take into 

account. 

Right: The same refers to equipment. Again, 

we are about the first in the Balkans, and last 

among the countries in transition. 

The question which poses itself is what 

results have Serbian oncology been achiev-

smo qudi obolelih od raka izle~ili. To je 

veoma sloèn, kompleksan problem i 

pitawe i ne moè se re{avati za celokupnu 

onkologiju jedne dràve. 

Ja sam izvadio jedan segment onkologije u 

kome sam radio trideset-~etrdeset godina. 

To je onkoginekologija. Imamo nekoliko 

prospektivnih i retrospektivnih 

studija koje doseù do 1933. godine. 

Mislim konkretno na studije primarijusa 

Vladete Popovi}a. 

Usudio sam se da izdvojim tri studije koje 

se odnose na brahiterapiju karcinoma 

grli}a i tela materice tokom posledwih 

35 do 40 godina XX veka. U tom periodu 

smo tretirali oko 35−40.000 takvih pacijenata. 

To je najve}a koncentracija klini- 

~kog materijala u jednom radiolo{koonkolo{kom 

centru na svetu. 

Rezultati prve studije su prezentovani na 

Tre}em svetskom kongresu radiolo{ke 

onkologije u Pekingu 1997. godine. Radi 

se o karcinomu grli}a materice. Beograd 

je za deset posto postigao boqe rezultate 

od prose~nih svetskih rezultata. To je 

statisti~ki signifikantno boqi rezultat 

od prose~nog svetskog. 

Druga studija je izloèna na Svetskom 

kongresu radiolo{ke onkologije − Melburn 

2001. godine. Beograd je postigao za 

12% boqe rezultate od prose~nih svetskih 

rezultata u le~ewu karcinom tela 

materice. 

I na kraju, tre}a, prospektivna studija, 

prezentovana je u Va{ingtonu na Svetskom 

onkolo{kom kongresu 2006. godine u 

organizaciji UICC-a gde je bilo prisutno 

6000 u~esnika. Sa ovog kongresa, poznati 

svetski ~asopis ”Lancet oncology” izdvaja 

{est studija i plasira ih na svoje stranice. 

Radi se o studijama iz Danske, 

Meksika, Indije, Srbije, Francuske i 

Rusije. I ova ~iwenica govori o tome gde 

se nalazi srpska onkologija, odnosno 

radiolo{ka onkologija Srbije.

ing? As an oncologist and physician, I see the 

results as the number of people we cured. 

This is a very complex problem and a question 

which cannot be resolved on the level of 

entire oncology of one country. 

I singled out one segment of oncology, on 

which I worked thirty to forty years. It is 

called onco-ginecology. We have several 

prospective and retrospective studies reaching 

back to 1933. By them, I in particular 

mean the studies of the Chief Physician, 

Vladeta Popovi}. 

I dare single out three studies which refer to 

the brachyteraphy of cervical cancer and cancer 

of uterus during the past 35 - 40 years of 

XX century during which we treated 35- 

40,000 of such patients. This is the largest 

concentration of clinical material in one radiology 

and oncology centre in the world. 

The first study the results of which were presented 

at the third World Congress of radiation 

oncology in Peking in 1997, referred to 

the cervical cancer. Belgrade achieved results 

which were by 10% better than average 

international results. This is statistically significantly 

better result than the world's average. 

The next study was presented at the World 

Congress of radiation oncology held in 

Melbourne in 2001. Belgrade achieved 

results which were by 12% better than average 

international results in curing the carcinoma 

of uterus body. 

And finally the third, prospective study presented 

in Washington at the World Congress 

about oncology, held in 2006, which was 

organized by UICC, and attended by 6,000 

people. From this congress, the world's 

renowned journal "Lancet Oncology" highlighted 

six studies and published them on 

their pages. These are the studies of 

Denmark, Mexico, India, Serbia, France and 

Russia. This mirrors the place of Serbian 

oncology at this point - in particular, the radiation 

oncology.

Dru{tvo Srbije sara|ivalo i sara|iva}e 

sa Me|unarodnom unijom za borbu protiv 

raka i to na najvi{em mogu}em nivou. 

Sara|ivali smo tako|e i sa francuskim 

onkolozima, ~ak i pre Drugog svetskog 

rata. 

Mnogi na{i stru~waci koji su pomiwani 

i danas i koji se pomiwu i u monografiji, 

zavr{ili su studije i najvi{a obrazovawa 

u Francuskoj i vratili se u Srbiju, i 

radili upravo u onkologiji. Posle rata 

to se isto de{avalo. Na primer, profesor 

Xodi}, na{ ugledni profesor i onkolog, 

zavr{io je svoje poslediplomske studije 

upravo u Francuskoj. 

Kada smo bili u velikoj materijalnoj 

krizi 2001. godine, Francuska ambasada 

nam je poklonila 100 hiqada dolara. 

Gospodin Gabriel Keler, u to vreme 

francuski ambasador u Beogradu, tim 

povodom je u Institutu za onkologiju i 

radiologiju Srbije primio plaketu zahvalnosti. 

Finally, I would like to say that the Serbian 

Society cooperated and will cooperate in the 

future, with the International Union against 

Cancer at the highest possible level. 

We also cooperated with French oncologists, 

even before the second World War. 

Numerous experts from our country, many 

of whom we mentioned today, and who were 

included in the Monograph, completed their 

studies and obtained highest education in 

France, returned to Serbia and worked in the 

field of oncology. After the war, this pattern 

remained the same. For example, Professor 

Dòdi}, our renowned Professor and oncologist, 

completed his post graduate studies in 

France. 

In 2001, when we went through a big financial 

crisis, the embassy of France donated 100 

thousand USD. Mr Gabriel Keller, the 

French ambassador in Belgrade at that time, 

received from the Institute for Oncology and 

Radiology the golden plate as the token of 

our gratitude.

deceniji odvijala se velika saradwa izme|u 

srpskih i ruskih onkologa. Najpoznatiji 

ruski onkolo{ki instituti i centri 

u Moskvi, Petrogradu, Obninsku prihvatali 

su na{e stru~wake i tamo smo se 

i edukovali. Isto tako su i oni dolazili 

kod nas u Beograd. 

I jedan kuriozitet! Prvi strani dràvqanin 

koji je postao ~lan Glavnog odbora 

Dru{tva Srbije za borbu protiv raka bio 

je Rus, akademik Igor Vaseqevi} Halevinski, 

koji je ina~e bio {ef, u to vreme, 

Kancelarije Ujediwenih nacija za saradwu 

u Beogradu. 

I na kraju, Srbi i Rusi posle velikih

I would like to say the same for the Russian 

oncologists. In the seventh, eighth and ninth 

decade, we had an excellent cooperation 

between Serbian and Russian oncologists. 

Famous Russian Institutes of Oncology and 

centres in Moscow, Petersburg, Obninsk 

accepted our experts who went through a 

training there. Also, they used to pay visits to 

us here in Belgrade. 

Let me also share with you one peculiarity! 

The first foreigner who became the member 

of the Management Board of the Serbian 

Society for Fight against Cancer was a 

Russian, academy member Igor Vasiljevi} 

Halevinski, who was then the Head of the 

UN Office for the cooperation at Belgrade. 

In the end, Serbs and Russians after great 

battles: in the right corner below, the founder 

of Serbian Society for Fight against Cancer, 

Dr Blagoje Ne{kovi}, who had the rank of a 

Major General, in the company of General 

Zdanov and General Peko Dap~evi}, in the

Joannovi}u, dopisnom ~lanu SANU, koji 

je prvi i najzaslu`niji srpski onkolog, a 

i svetski pionir u otkri}u procesa autoagresije 

u medicini. 

Preci \or|a Joannovi}a su iz Metohije 

do{li u banatsko selo Beodra, 

koje se danas zove Novo Mile{evo. 

Roditeqi \or|a Joannovi}a su se zatim 

preselili u Be~, gde je \or|e i ro|en 

1871. godine. Roditeqi su \or|a i wegovog 

mla|eg brata vaspitavali u patrijarhalnom 

duhu stare srpske tradicije. 

\or|e je u Be~u zavr{io osnovnu i 

sredwu {kolu i presti`ni be~ki Medicinski 

fakultet. Kao ro|eni Be~lija, 

zaposlio se u Institutu za patologiju 

Medicinskog fakulteta u Be~u kod 

~uvenog patologa profesora Paltaufa,

Respected guests, colleagues, ladies and 

gentlemen, it is my task, in fact, to tell something 

more about Prof. Dr. \or|e Joannovi}, 

corresponding member of the Serbian Academy 

of Sciences and Arts (SASA), the first 

and most meritorious Serbian oncologist, and 

the world pioneer in discovery of autoagression 

process in medicine. 

Ancestors of \or|e Joannovi} came from 

Metohija to the Village Beodra in Banat 

(Vojvodina), today called Novo Milo{evo. 

The parents of \or|e Joannovi} moved then 

to Vienna, where \or|e was born in 1871. 

\or|e and his younger brother were brought 

up in patriarchal spirit of the old Serbian tradition. 

\or|e completed elementary and secondary 

school in Vienna and graduated from the 

prestigious Medical School in Vienna. As 

native of Vienna he started to work in the 

Institute of Pathology of the Vienna Medical 

School with the famous pathologist, Prof.

da je Be~ pre Prvog svetskog rata bio centar

U Be~u je rektor Univerziteta bio 

slavni patolog i akademik Karl fon

mogli su da konkuri{u samo Berlin, koji 

je imao Rudolfa Virhova, pisca revolucionarne 

kwige „Celularna patologija”, 

zatim Pariz, London i donekle Sankt 

Peterburg. 

\or|e Joannovi} je u to vreme bio 

Srbin sa najve}im i najpresti`nijim univerzitetskim 

zvawem u svetu. 

Taj i takav ~ovek dolazi iz Be~a u 

Beograd iz ~istog i plemenitog patriotizma 

1920. godine. U saradwi sa Batutom 

i Subboti}em, osniva i organizuje 

Medicinski fakultet u Beogradu i 

polaè temeqe srpskoj onkologiji i 

patologiji. Moète zamisliti kakve je 

sve organizacione i druge poslove imao 

da obavi. 

Bio je u vi{e mandata prodekan i 

dekan, podigao je zgradu Instituta za 

patologiju 1926. godine, bio je prvi 

upravnik patologije. Osnovao je i bio 

prvi predsednik Jugoslovenskog dru{tva 

za izu~avawe i suzbijawe raka. 

Zalagao se za izgradwu jedinstvenog 

Onkolo{kog instituta u Beogradu. Bio je 

predsednik Srpskog lekarskog dru{tva. 

Od 1926. godine i dopisni ~lan SANU. 

Bio je, {to je va`no, i veliki prijateq 

studenata, tako da su ga studenti izabrali 

za doìvotnog po~asnog predsednika 

jugoslovenskih medicinara. 

Dostojno je reprezentovao Srbiju i 

Jugoslaviju na mnogobrojnim medicinskim 

kongresima u Evropi i Americi. 

Nije se ènio, nije imao dece, smatrao 

je da nauka traì celog ~oveka. Pose- 

}ivao je svog brata u Beodri. 

Nau~no delo \or|a Joannovi}a je impresivno 

u svetskim razmerama. Naravno, 

osnove ovog dela postavio je jo{ u Be~u. 

Napisao je 58 zna~ajnih radova iz eksperimentalne 

onkologije i patologije i 

patolo{ke morfologije. 

Za nas je posebno zna~ajno da je bio 

prvi srpski onkolog nau~nik.

Professor, Associate Professor and Full 

Professor. You must have in mind that 

Vienna before the First World War was center 

of the medical world. 

Rector of the University of Vienna of that 

time was the famous pathologist and academician 

Carl von Rokitansky. Rivals of the 

Vienna Medical School could only be Berlin 

with Rudolf Virchow, writer of the revolutionary 

book: "Cellular Pathology", Paris, 

London and to certain point Sankt 

Peterburg. 

\or|e Joannovi} was at that time a Serb 

with the greatest an most prestigious university 

position in the world. 

Such a man comes from Vienna to 

Belgrade for pure and noble patriotism in 

1920, to found and organize in triumvirate 

with Batut and Subboti} the Belgrade 

Medical School and lay foundation of the 

Serbian oncology and pathology. Can you 

imagine at all with what kind of organizational 

and other difficult tasks he had to cope. 

He was Associate Dean and Dean for several 

terms of office, he built the Institute of 

Pathology in 1926, he was the first Director 

of Pathology. He participated in the activities 

of the Yugoslav Society for the Study and 

Treatment of Cancer and was its first 

Chairman. 

He was the one to support construction of 

the central Oncology Institute in Belgrade. 

He was the Chairman of the Serbian Medical 

Society. In 1926 he became a corresponding 

member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences 

and Arts. What is very important, he was a 

great friend of the students, and the students 

elected him Lifelong Honorary President of 

the Yugoslav Medical Students. 

He represented trustworthly Serbia and 

Yugoslavia at numerous medical congresses 

in Europe and the United States. 

He never married nor had children, he 

believed that science wants a whole person. 

He visited his brother in Beodra. 

Scientific work of \or|e Joannovi} has an 

impressive world-wide reputation. Naturally, 

basis of his work had been set in Vienna. He 

wrote 58 significant papers dealing with

sebe”. 

Danas u XXI veku mi znamo da to nije 

ta~no, jer ve} na }elijskom nivou organizam 

{aqe molekul smrti svojim nepotrebnim 

}elijama, koji onda aktivira u }eliji 

ve} ugra|eni kaspazni sistem enzima, a 

koji „isecka” DNK i dovodi do samoubistva 

}elija tj. apoptoze. 

Tako|e, danas znamo da postoje mnoge 

autoimune bolesti. 

Me|utim, tada je \or|e Joannovi} 

zapazio da vojnici koji su imali izle~enu 

povredu glave i mozga nanetu vatrenim 

oru`jem nekada imaju nesnosne glavoboqe 

i neki takvi vojnici umiru. 

Na obdukcijama takvih bolesnika 

nalaze se samo multipna ogwi{ta razmek{awa 

mozga, kako u blizini, tako i u 

daqem odstojawu od izle~ene povrede 

mozga. 

Iste rezultate je dobio i svojim 

eksperimentima na belim pacovima koji 

su izlagani udarima povre|ivawa glave. 

Iz ovih zapaàwa na qudima i ìvotiwama 

\or|e Joannovi} izvla~i genijalni 

zakqu~ak: „Isti elementi mozga, koji su 

usled traume bili izvor za mnoèwe produkata 

raspada podleù kasnije dejstvu 

svojih reakcionih produkata”. 

Ako ovo prevedemo na dana{wi jezik o 

autoagresiji, o~igledno raspadni produkti 

mozga stimuli{u na{ imuni sistem da 

stvori antitela protiv wih, ali i protiv 

takvih materija u zdravim }elijama mozga 

i otuda multiple encefalomalacije. 

\or|e Joannovi} je ~ak poku{ao da 

primeni ovaj svoj koncept u terapiji karcinoma 

koè qudi i tuberkuloznih granuloma 

kod ìvotiwa ubrizgavaju}i „ra- 

{~ine” (misli na raspadne produkte ovih 

oboqewa) pod koù takvih bolesnika i 

eksperimentalnih ìvotiwa.

It is particularly important for us that he 

was the first Serbian oncologist/scientist. 

The most important scientific achievement 

of Djor|e Joannovi} is a little known 

fact that he was a pioneer in the discovery of 

autoagression in medicine. 

At that time in the medical circles dominated 

a narrow dogma inaugurated by the 

Nobel Prize Laureate, Immunologist Paul 

Ehrlich, inventor of "Salvarsan", a medicine 

against syphilis, who was a friend of \or|e 

Joannovi}, that the "human organism never 

creates substances against itself". 

Today, in the 21st century, we know that it 

is not true, for already at the cell level the 

organism sends a death molecule to its 

unnecessary cells, which then activates in the 

cell already built-in caspase enzyme system 

that cuts the DNA and leads to cell suicide or 

apoptosis. 

Furthermore, we are aware today that 

there are many autoimmune diseases. 

However, \or|e Joannovi} noticed then 

that the soldiers with healed firearm-related 

head and brain injuries sometimes had heavy 

headaches and died. 

Autopsy of such patients proved multiple 

areas of softened brain tissue, both in the 

vicinity and at a longer distance from the 

healed brain injury. 

He got the same results in his experiments 

on white rats which were subjected to head 

injuries. 

From such human and animal observation 

\or|e Joannovi} drew a brilliant conclusion: 

"The same brain elements, which have been 

as result of trauma source for multiplication 

of products of disintegration, later on are subject 

to action of their reaction products". 

If we interpret this into today's language 

of autoagression, it is obvious that disintegration 

brain products stimulate our immune 

system to make antibodies against them, but 

also against such substances in the healthy 

brain cells, which causes multiple encephalomalacias. 

\or|e Joannovi} even tried to apply this 

concept of his in the therapy of human skin 

cancer and tuberculous granuloma of animals, 

injecting the disintegration tissue under

Joannovi} je ova svoja otkri}a saop- 

{tio 1920. godine u Be~kom lekarskom 

dru{tvu i publikovao je iste godine dva 

rada: u Be~kom klini~kom nedeqniku i 

Srpskom arhivu. Interesantno da sam 

jedva prona{ao taj wegov rad u Srpskom 

arhivu jer je gre{kom lektora potpisan 

\. Jovanovi}, a ne \. Joannovi}, a naslov 

rada je bio uop{ten: „Novi pogledi na 

postanak i le~ewe izvesnih bolesti”. 

Paradoksalno je da sva srpska kulturna 

javnost zna za fizi~ara Mihaila Pupina 

iz Idvora u Banatu, a za \or|a Joannovi}a, 

isto tako velikog nau~nika, poreklom 

iz Beodre u Banatu, ne. âk ni mnogi 

lekari ne znaju o wegovom otkri}u 

autoagresije. 

Naàlost, epilog pri~e o \or|u 

Joannovi}u je tragi~an. Godine 1932. organizuju}i 

svoj godi{wi bal, buntovni studenti 

medicine levi~ari poru~ili su da 

je kraq Aleksandar, naravno, dobro 

do{ao da do|e na bal, ali da to nije slu~aj 

sa wegovim predsednikom Vlade, generalom 

Petrom @ivkovi}em. 

Naravno, general Petar @ivkovi} se 

razbesneo i pozvao u svoj kabinet \or|a 

Joannovi}a i tada mu navodno rekao: „Ti 

matora budalo, kako ne moè{ da smiri{ 

te buntovne studente” i jo{ gore, navodno, 

o{amario ga. 

Sav crven u licu \or|e Joannovi} je 

izleteo iz kabineta Petra @ivkovi}a i 

oti{ao na svoj Patolo{ki institut u 

svoju sobu, gde je ina~e i stanovao. Svetlo 

je gorelo cele no}i u wegovoj sobi, a meni 

je moja pokojna profesorka patologije, 

Marija Vi{wi} rekla da je u furuni 

na|eno veoma mnogo pepela, {to govori da 

je spaqivao svoju arhivu, i to ide u prilog 

samoubistvu. Tek ujutru, na|en je obe{en 

o kvaku prozora, spustiv{i se u fotequ. 

Beograd do tada nije zapamtio masovniju i 

tu`niju sahranu. 

Da zakqu~im: danas, 75 godina od 

tragi~ne smrti \or|a Joannovi}a svi 

cenimo wegovu veliku i plemenitu 

li~nost.

\or|e Joannovi}, therefore, discovered 

autoagression in medicine before Fissinger 

and Masugi, cited in the official history of 

medicine. 

Joannovi} communicated his discoveries 

in 1920 before the Vienna Medical 

Association and published two papers in the 

same year in the: Wiener klinische 

Wochenschrift and the Serbian Archiv. It is 

interesting that it was only with great difficulty 

that I have found his paper in the Serbian 

Archives, because by reader's mistake he was 

filed under \. Jovanovi}, and not \. 

Joannovi}, and the title of the paper was 

highly generalized: "Novi pogledi na 

postanak i le~enje izvesnih bolesti" (New 

Views on Origin and Treatment of Certain 

Diseases). 

Paradoxally enough, the Serbian cultural 

public knows all about the Physicist Mihailo 

Pupin from Idvor in Banat, and nothing 

about \or|e Joannovi}, a great scientist 

from Beodra in Banat as well. Many physicians 

do not even know about this 

Joannovic's discovery of autoagression. 

Unfortunately, epilogue to the story on 

\or|e Joannovi} was tragic. In 1932, organizing 

the annual Student Ball, rebellious left 

winged medical students sent word that King 

Aleksandar is welcome to come to the ball, 

but not his Prime Minister, General Petar 

@ivkovi}. 

General Petar @ivkovi} was furious of 

course and called at once \or|e Joannovi} to 

his office, and allegedly told him: "You old 

fool, can't you quiet down these rebellious 

students of yours", and what is even worse, 

slapped him. 

Getting red with humiliation \or|e 

Joannovi} rushed out of the Office of Petar 

@ivkovi} and went to his Institute of 

Pathology, into his room, where he also lived. 

The lights in his room were on all night long, 

and my late Professor of Pathology, Ms. 

Marija Vi{nji}, told me that a lot of ash were 

found in the fireplace in the morning, which 

meant that he had been burning his files, 

which proved suicide. Only in the morning he 

was found hung on the window knob and 

lying in his arm-chair. Never before had Belgrade 

witnessed such mass and sad funeral.

Tako|e, koliko smo upoznati, po{tujemo 

i ponosni smo na wegovo veliko 

nau~no delo. Ali kako smo se pona{ali 

prema wemu za ìvota? Mnogi su ga, naravno, 

cenili. SANU ga je izabrala za svog 

dopisnog ~lana, ali istini za voqu, mnogi 

su mu neopravdano pravili smetwe i 

videli smo na kraju, oterali ga u smrt. 

Postavqa se pitawe koliko mi Srbi, 

zaista, cenimo za ìvota na{e me|unarodno 

priznate nau~ne veli~ine. Moèmo 

li ne{to na primeru \or|a Joannovi}a 

da nau~imo za na{e relevantno odgovaraju}e 

pona{awe u sada{wosti i u budu}nosti? 

Hvala. 

In conclusion, today 75 years from tragic 

death of \or|e Joannovi}, we all honour 

Joannovic's great and noble personality. 

Furthermore, as far as we know, his great 

scientific work is respected and honoured 

very much. But how did we treat him while 

he was alive? Many of course respected him. 

He was a corresponding member of the 

Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, 

although, to tell the truth, he experienced 

unjustified obstacles by many people, which 

finally drove him to death. 

The question is now how much do the 

Serbs really respect our internationally 

acknowledged scientists, great men, during 

their life time. Can we learn something on 

the example of \or|e Joannovi} for our relevant 

appropriate behaviour at the present 

time and in the future?

Velika mi je ~ast i zadovoqstvo {to 

mi je pruèna prilika da govorim o 

Dru{tvu Srbije za borbu protiv raka, na 

koje smo veoma ponosni jer je nastavilo 

rad Jugoslovenskog dru{tva koje je kao 

{to ste ~uli osnovano kao ~etvrto u 

svetu, a koje smo u~lanili u Me|unarodno 

dru{tvo za borbu protiv raka (UICC) 

1971. godine. 

Nastavqaju}i stremqewa Jugoslovenskog 

dru{tva, na{e Dru{tvo, materijalno 

pomaè zavr{etak izgradwe, kao i 

nabavku opreme za zgradu u Pasterovoj 

ulici koja je bila namewena za obolele od 

raka, odnosno za Institut za onkologiju i 

radiologiju. Podsetimo da su u posleratnom 

periodu u ovoj zgradi pored Instituta 

bile sme{tene i dve klinike, kao i 

Institut medicine rada. Da bi omogu-

It is a great pleasure and honour to have 

the chance to speak of the Serbian Society 

for Fight Against Cancer we are very proud 

of because it has continued the activities of 

the Yugoslav Society, which was, as you have 

heard, founded as fourth in the world, and 

made member of the Union Against Cancer 

(UICC) in 1971. 

Continuing the aspirations of the 

Yugoslav Society, the Serbian Society supported 

financially the end of construction 

and procurement of the equipment for the 

building in the Pasteur Street, intended for 

treatment of cancer patients, i.e. Institute of 

Oncology and Radiology. I would like to 

remind you that in the postwar period, in this 

building beside the Institute, there were two 

clinics as well as Institute of Occupational 

Medicine. In order to enable accommodation

Da bi obezbedili redovan priliv 

materijalnih sredstava (jer su donacije 

zbog lo{ijih ekonomskih situacija bile 

smawene) na{e Dru{tvo insistira na 

dono{ewu zakona o doplatnoj po{tanskoj 

marki. Ovo je ostvareno u vreme kada je 

na{e Dru{tvo predsedavalo u Savezu 

dru{tava za borbu protiv raka Jugoslavije 

(1991). 

Dodatni stalan izvor prihoda Dru{tva 

smo, u periodu kada sam se nalazio na 

mestu predsednika, ostvarivali dobrotvornim 

koncertima uz veliku pomo} i 

u~e{}e na{ih umetnika u koncertnim 

dvoranama, pozori{tima i stranim ambasadama. 

Kako sva ova prikupqena sredstva 

nisu bila dovoqna za ve}e donacije, na{e 

aktivnosti smo usmeravali na edukaciju o 

raku. Zapo~eli smo sna`nu kampawu protiv 

pu{ewa i prekomernog uìvawa u 

alkoholu, kao i na zna~ajnu ulogu ishrane 

i ~istog vazduha. 

Akcije smo usmeravali na {kolsku 

omladinu preko koje smo ulazili i u 

porodice. Prvi korak je prevod sedam 

kwiìca koje je publikovao UICC i uz 

va`nu podr{ku Ministarstva za prosvetu 

besplatno, u dovoqnom broju, distribuirali 

svim osmogodi{wim i sredwim 

{kolama. Uz preporuku da se ove 

teme obra|uju na ~asovima higijene, 

biologije ili prirodnih nauka. Nagla- 

{avamo da je posle na{eg iskustva UICC 

preporu~ivalo i drugim ~lanicama da 

prevedu ove kwiìce. Moram da spomenem 

i na{e prevode drugih izdawa UICC, i to 

„Osloboditi novo pokolewe od duvana”, a 

za najmla|e crtanku „Zdrava hrana svakog 

dana”. 

Kao dodatnu va`nu aktivnost sa 

omladinom isti~em nagradni konkurs koje 

Dru{tvo raspisuje svake godine, marta

To ensure regular funds inflow (namely, 

donations were decreased due to bad economic 

conditions), our Society insisted on 

adoption of regulations on Extra-Cost 

Stamps. We succeeded in doing so at the time 

when our Society chaired the Yugoslav 

Association of Societies for Fight Against 

Cancer (1991). 

Additional regular income of the Society, 

at the time when I was the Chairman, was 

made by charity concerts, with the great help 

and participation of our artists in concert 

halls, theatres and foreign embassies. 

As collected funds were not enough for 

bigger donations, we focused our activities on 

cancer education. We began a strong nonsmoking 

campaign and campaign against 

drinking, and highlighted the important role 

of healthy food and clean air. 

Our actions were oriented toward school 

youth. Through them we entered into their 

families. The first step was translation of 

seven booklets published by the UICC - 

International Union Against Cancer, with 

tremendous support of the Ministry of 

Education; we forwarded these booklets free 

of charge to all elementary and high schools, 

with the recommendation for the pupils to 

study these themes in the classes of hygiene, 

biology and natural sciences. We should 

emphasize that after such experience, UICC 

- International Union Against Cancer recommended 

also to other members of the 

International Union to translate into their 

languages these booklets. I have to mention 

also our other translations of the UICC publications, 

such as: "Protection of the Young 

from Tobacco", and for the youngest cartoon 

"Healthy Food for Everyone". 

As additional important activity with the 

young, I would like to emphasize the annual 

Award Contest of the Society at the beginning 

of March, for all elementary and high

Redovno smo publikovali mnogo postera 

koje ste mogli videti na javnim mestima, 

po{tama, apotekama, medicinskim 

centrima, {kolama, èlezni~kim i autobuskim 

~ekaonicama. Pomenu}u samo 

„Evropski kodeks o raku”, „Pasivno pu- 

{ewe”, „Porodice i {kole zajedno pobedi}e 

rak”. 

Organizovali smo posebnu telefonsku 

liniju na kojoj su deùrali na{i onkolozi 

i odgovarali na sva postavqena 

pitawa o raku. 

Za zdravstvene radnike organizovali 

smo dvodevne seminare na kojima su se 

lekari op{te prakse upoznavali sa 

najnovijim pristupima u prevenciji, 

otkrivawu i le~ewu raka. 

Veoma sam ponosan {to smo o{tampali 

i besplatno dodeleli „Onkolo{ki 

priru~nik za medicinske sestre i 

tehni~are”, VIII izdawe Ameri~kog 

dru{tva za rak, za koga smo dobili autorizaciju 

od izdava~ke ku}e Jones i Bartlett 

po preporuci Ameri~kog dru{tva da ga 

bez naknade moèmo prevesti na na{ 

jezik. Prevod su obavili na{i poznati 

onkolozi, tako|e bez nadoknade. 

Mladim lekarima smo za usavr{avawe 

u inostranstvu, za u~e{}e sa wihovim 

radovima na zna~ajnim internacionalnim 

kongresima i skupovima dodeqivali 

nov~anu pomo} po na{em pravilniku. 

Na kraju, dame i gopspodo, moram priznati 

da smo imali i neuspeha od kojih 

posebno izdvajam neuspeh na{eg projekta 

u sanirawu dnevnog kopa napu{tenog rudnika 

azbesta u Stragarima sa koga se 

pored zaga|ivawa sitnim kancerogenim 

vlaknima azbesta vazdu{nim strujama 

bliske okoline zaga|uju veliki delovi 

na{e zemqe uz slivove reka Jasenice i 

Morave.

I would also like to emphasize lectures at 

adult educational institutions, workplaces, 

radio and television, by well-known oncologists, 

academicians and university professors; 

as well as our pocket editions both for sick 

and healthy people. 

We have regularly published posters, 

which could bee seen in public places, post 

offices, pharmacies, medical centers, schools, 

railroad and bus stations. Let us mention 

only some of them, like: "European Code 

Against Cancer", "Passive smoking", 

"Families and School Shall Beat Cancer 

Together". 

We have organized a special phone line 

with our prominent oncologists answering to 

all frequently asked questions about cancer. 

We have organized for our health workers 

two-day seminars, where the general practitioners 

got acquainted with best approaches 

in cancer prevention and detection. 

I am very proud that we have published 

and distributed free of charge: Oncology 

Guide to Nurses and Technicians, 8th edition 

of the American Cancer Society, for which 

we have got authorization from Jones and 

Bartlett Publishers, with recommendation of 

the American Society to publish this guide 

free of charge. Our well-known oncologists 

helped with the translation without charge 

too. 

We have enabled young physicians training 

abroad, their participation with their 

papers at important international congresses 

and gatherings, raised and distributed funds 

according to our rulebook. 

At the end, ladies and gentlemen, I must 

admit that we have had failures as well, 

among which I particularly single out failure 

of our project in rehabilitation of the strip 

mine of the Stragari deserted asbestos mine, 

which pollutes with tiny asbestos fibers 

through air pollution both the immediate 

environment and huge areas of our country 

along the basins of the Jasenica and the 

Morava Rivers.

Pisati kratku istoriju Instituta za

At the end, you must hear what I have to 

say, and perhaps, if you are patient enough, 

you will get a dinner. 

My task is to tell you something about the 

relation between the Serbian Society for 

Fight Against Cancer and the Institute of 

Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, which is 

not easy at all, after all the speeches you have 

heard, but I will try to be concise and tell you 

something that you might not have heard 

yet. 

To write a short history of the Institute of 

Oncology and Radiology Serbia is an enormous 

and very difficult task, which I accept 

with great responsibility and fearing whether 

I am able to cope with it. 

The history of this institution interweaves 

with history of our country, Medical School, 

Serbian Medical Society and Serbian Society 

for Fight Against Cancer, from the very

„Neka pomognut pomo}u bo`jom, 

znawem, nesebi~nom predano{}u sviju 

koji }e raditi u wemu ispuni sva o~ekivawa 

wegovih stvaralaca i celog jugoslovenskog 

naroda. 

Neka ovaj zavod bude mesto istine, 

qubavi i ~ove~nosti i neka wegovi 

stvaraoci, nadahnuti qubavqu prema 

bli`wem, imaju veru u one koji }e u tom 

zavodu delati i neka u ovom zavodu na|u 

leka i utehe oni kojima je namewena.” 

Imena pregalaca koji su se predano 

tokom prethodnih deset godina borili sa 

opakom bole{}u osta}e u se}awu i srcima 

onih koje su le~ili. Mnoga imena bi}e 

zapisana zlatnim slovima u nauci i struci 

a mnoga }e vreme neumitno prebrisati, 

dav{i im neadekvatnu ocenu. 

Ovom prilikom suzdrà}emo se od 

pomiwawa bilo kog imena, kako bismo 

izbegli i najmawu verovatno}u da nekog 

povredimo. Onkolo{ka era zapo~iwe u 

Srbiji izuzetno ìvom aktivno{}u 

nadle`nih iz Ministarstva zdravqa, 

Srpskog lekarskog dru{tva, Medicinskog 

fakulteta, Jugoslovenskog dru{tva za 

izu~avawe i suzbijawe raka. Agilno{}u 

istaknutih ~lanova medicinske zajednice 

objavqena je 1930. Rezolucija Srpskog 

lekarskog dru{tva o potrebi formirawa 

instituta za izu~avawe, le~ewe i suzbijawe 


Pro{lo je od tada skoro deset godina 

kada su se sklopile okolnosti koje }e 

dovesti do po~etka izgradwe namenske 

zgrade. Godine 1939. 24 septembra osve- 

{tani su temeqi Zavoda kneza Pavla za 

izu~avawe i suzbijawe raka. Taj datum je 

odre|en za dan Instituta za onkologiju i 

radiologiju Srbije. Weno kraqevsko 

veli~anstvo Marija i wegovo kraqevsko 

viso~anstvo knez namesnik Pavle osigurali 

su materijalna sredstva za izgradwu 

ove ustanove. Izgradwu je prekinuo rat, a 

dovr{ena je po wegovom zavr{etku.

beginning. It is a history where destinies of 

tens of thousands of cancer patients treated 

during the past 80 years are intertwined, a 

history of their families and the ones who 

treated them and took care of them. 

I believe that the message from the 

Charter which was laid in the foundations of 

the building in 14 Pasteur Street, where the 

Institute is found, clearly explains it: 

"Let it, by God's help, knowledge, 

unselfish commitment of all who shall work 

in it, fulfill the expectations of its creators 

and the whole Yugoslav nation. 

Let this Institute be a place of truth, love 

and humanity, and let its creators, imbued 

with love for close ones, have faith in those 

who shall work in this Institute, and let the 

ones in need find in this Institute remedy and 

comfort." 

The names of zealous workers who fought 

in the recent ten years with this pernicious 

disease shall stay in memories and hearts of 

the ones they cured. Names of many a scientist 

and expert shall be written in gold, while 

others shall be mercilessly deleted in time 

with a poor grade. 

On this occasion we will not mention any 

names to avoid even the slightest probability 

of hurting someone. The oncological era in 

Serbia began with an exceptionally vivid 

activity of the competent Ministry of Health, 

Serbian Medical Society, Medical School, 


Treatment of Cancer. Thanks to endeavors 

of distinguished members of the medical 

community, Resolution of the Serbian 

Medical Society on the need of establishing 

an institute for the study, treatment and control 

of cancer was published in 1930. 

After nearly ten years, circumstances 

finally enabled beginning of construction of 

such a building. On September 24, 1939, 

foundation stones of the Institute of Knez 

(Prince) Pavle for Study and Treatment of 

Cancer were blessed. This is the Day of the 

Institute of Oncology and Radiology of 

Serbia. Her Royal Highness Marija and His 

Royal Highness Prince-Regent Pavle provided 

funds for construction of this institution. 

Construction was interrupted by war, and it 

was finished when the war ended. 

At the end of fifties of the last century, the 

building in 14 Pasteur Street included:

vi{e decenija pre ovoga zapo~ete tendencije 

za kompeksnim pristupom u onkologiji 

koji su trasirali na{i veliki 

preci. 

Ovaj deo sale ne}e dobiti ve~eru 

(smeh). 

A to je da nema le~ewa bez izu~avawa i 

suzbijawa raka. Savremenim jezikom bismo 

rekli da ozbiqno bavqewe onkologijom 

podrazumeva le~ewe, nau~noistraìva~ki 

rad i prevenciju. 

Danas Institut za onkologiju i radiologiju 

Srbije ~ine tri klinike, {est 

slu`bi i dva odeqewa. Institut je sertifikovan 

od strane Ministarstva za nauku 

kao nau~ni institut, koji je nastavna baza 

Medicinskog i drugih fakulteta. Institut 

~ine zaposleni, koji svakodnevno 

u~estvuju u le~ewu obolelih od raka. 

Onkolo{kih bolesnika je pro{le godine 

bilo preko 11.000. 

Na{i stru~waci su prisutni na svim 

zna~ajnijim evropskim i svetskim 

skupovima, a pojedinci kao i sama ustanova 

su ~lanovi svih zna~ajnijih me|unarodnih 

stru~nih organizacija. Institut je 

pridruèni ~lan Evropske asocijacije za 

istraìvawe i le~ewe raka. Unutar 

Instituta se sprovodi nekoliko desetina 

klini~kih studija svakog dana. U posledwih 

pet godina Institut je gotovo u potpunosti 

rekonstruisan, oprema zanovqena 

i trenutno je u toku instalacija 

opreme u vrednosti od devet miliona 

evra. 

Veruju}i da na{i preci nisu mogli da 

sawaju kako }e danas wihove ideje biti 

predo~ene u stvarnosti, uz èqu za stalnim 

napretkom, nadamo se da }e na{i 

potomci oti}i jo{ i daqe, se}aju}i se nas 

onako kako se mi se}amo na{ih velikih 

predaka.

encompassed all tendencies of several 

decades toward complex oncology approach 

traced by our great predecessors.

There is no treatment without cancer control 

study. In contemporary language it 

means that serious oncology approach 

involves treatment, scientific and research 

work and prevention. 

Today, Institute of Oncology and 

Radiology of Serbia consists of three clinics, 

six services and two departments. The 

Institute has a Certificate of the Ministry of 

Science to be a scientific institution and 

teaching base of the Medical School and 

other faculties. Institute staff is trained for 

treating cancer patients on daily basis. Only 

last year there were over 11.000 of such 

patients. 

Our experts participate in all significant 

European and international congresses, and 

are members, as the Institute itself, of major 

international expert organizations. The 

Institute is and affiliate member of the 

European Association for Cancer Research. 

Within the Institute several tens of clinical 

studies are implemented every day. In the 

last five years the Institute has been completely 

reconstructed, equipment renovated 

and installation has begun of the equipment 

worth nine million euros. 

In the belief that our ancestors could only 

have dreamed that there ideas would have 

come true, wishing continuous progress, we 

hope that our descendants shall achieve even 

more, remembering us just the way we 

remember our great ancestors.

80 godina borbe protiv raka u Srbiji, 

veliki broj pojedinaca kao i onkolo{kih 

ustanova i dru{tava svesrdno se 

angaòvalo u toj borbi. Da bi na neki 

na~in odali priznawe svim u~esnicima te 

borbe, profesor îkari} je napisao 

monografiju „80 godina borbe protiv 

raka u Srbiji” u kojoj je posveta: „Kwigu 

posve}ujemo svim pregaocima velikog 

srca i jo{ ve}eg duha koji su na tlu na{e 

zemqe u~estvovali u 80-godi{woj borbi 

protiv nemilosrdnog neprijateqa koji se 

zove rak.

Akademik Joannovi} bio je veliki 

stru~wak, nau~nik i pedagog. Pod wegovom 

inicijativom 27.9.1927. godine osnovano 

je Jugoslovensko dru{tvo za izu~avawe 

i suzbijawe raka. Bio je tvorac ideje 

o izgradwi centralnog onkolo{kog instituta 

u Beogradu. Godine 1922. akademik 

Joannovi} je osnovao a potom i inicirao 

izgradwu Instituta za patologiju, bio 

prvi {ef katedre i dekan Medicinskog 

fakulteta u 4 mandata.

80 years of fight against cancer in Serbia, 

numerous individuals as well as oncology 

institutions and societies have heartily participated 

in this struggle. In order to reward 

somehow all participants in this struggle, 

Professor îkari} has written the Monograph 

"80 Years of Fight Against Cancer in Serbia" 

with the following dedication: "This book is 

dedicated to all zealous workers of mighty 

heart and even greater spirit, who have participated 

in our country in the 80-year long 

struggle against merciless enemy called cancer. 

This is also a dedication to all our patients, 

who have also participated in this fight for

Academician Joannovi} was a great expert, 

scientist and pedagogue. He initiated founding

It was his idea to build a central Oncology 

Institute in Belgrade. In 1922 Academician 

Joannovi} founded and initiated construction 

of the Institute of Pathology. He was the first 

Head of Department and Dean of Medical 

School for 4 terms of office.

Bio je veliki humanista, posebno nadaren 

da voli Dru{tvo Srbije za borbu protiv

uzdigne Dru{tvo. Zna~ajna je uloga 

Radeta Ku{i}a u organizovawu Dru{tva 

{irom tada{we Jugoslavije, kao i u 

wegovom povezivawu sa me|unarodnom 

Unijom za borbu protiv raka. Omogu}io 

je, ulaù}i ogromna materijalna sredstva, 

revitalizaciju centralne onkolo{ke 

ustanove u Srbiji. Inicirao je i organizovao

helping the Serbian Society for Fight Against 

Cancer; as prominent economic expert he 

was able to organize and raise funds to help 

the Society. Rade Ku{i} had a great role in 

organizing the Society's activities in the overall 

Yugoslav region and connecting it with 

the International Union Against Cancer. He 

enabled, investing huge funds, revitalization 

of the central Serbian Oncology Institute. He 

initiated and organized the action "Youth in 

Fight Against Cancer" performed today as 

well.

Successful in using radium punctate and radium 

moulage. Excellent practical and manual 

skills and knowledge of this oncologist, who 

has spent his entire working career at the 

institute of Oncology and Radiology of 

Serbia. He is one of the most engaged radiation 

oncologists in Serbia in the field of radium 

brachytherapy. 

Scientific Advisor Predrag Brzakovi}, MD PhD 

During his active service as the head radiologist 

in the Belgrade Institute of Oncology 

and Radiology he has contributed a lot to 

creation and development of contemporary 

protocols in cancer treatment. Due to his 

exceptional merits in scientific-research in 

the field of oncology, he was elected chairman 

of the Serbian Society for Fight Against 

Cancer in three terms of office. In 2006 he

Professor Mladenovi} was the Director of the 

Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic "Narodni 

front" in the period 1969 - 1982. He is our 

best gynecology surgeon ever. He was the 

first one to introduce consultation staff team 

in treating gynecological patients; he founded 

the gynecology and obstetrics school, 

which is functioning even today. 

Prof. Dr. Miroslav Opri} 

Organizer and founder of the Departments 

of Pathology in Zaje~ar, Kladovo, Bor, 

Br~ko, and Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) 

"Beànijska Kosa"; and of the Institute of 

Pathology and Forensic Medicine in Tuzla. 

For four years he was the Chairman of 

Cancerology Section of the Serbian Medical

Prominent businessman and veteran when 

his activities in the Serbian Society Against 

Cancer are in question; he was also one of the 

Society's chairmen. His motto is "It is better 

to be respected than famous". He is one of 

the initiators of the Extra-Cost Stamp campaign 

and Editor-in-Chief of the first issue of 

the Society Journal "Bolje spre~iti nego le~iti" 

(Better to Prevent Than Cure).

Ve~eras smo ~uli mnogo lepih re~i o 80 

godina unazad, {ta smo radili i koliko

opasnom bole{}u. Naravno, re}i }u samo

i daqe boriti i da }emo se izboriti onoliko 

koliko moèmo i koliko savremena

okupqenih na zajedni~kom zadatku u jednoj 

borbi koju moramo dobiti. 

Vidim, dame i gospodo, jo{ ne{to {to je 

mnogo va`nije, integraciju svih resursa 

kojima dràva Srbija raspolaè. 

Evo i mene iz jedne ku}e koja je s vama ovde 

na zajedni~kom zadatku i verujem da }emo
