Chers Lecteurs,
Dear Reader,
While a big retrospective documenting the life of Yves Saint Laurent takes place
at the Petit Palais until August 2010, we ask ourselves what defines the success
and the longevity of a brand. Innovation and quality would naturally be our first
response, especially if we consider the worldwide fame of French brands. The
success stories that are Goyard, Chantelle and the concept store Colette are further
proof of this. In this edition we focus on two men – Lionel Giraud (Chaumet) and
Lucas Ossendrijver (Lanvin Menswear) – who have added a touch of passion to
this definition. As always, Luxos brings you the hippest addresses. A spa, a sundrenched
walk in a park or a chic restaurant: summer is here! Finally, and this is
big news, from now on you will be able to find us online at luxos.com, which is
your online guide to luxury. Welcome to the world of Luxos!
Chers lecteurs,
Dior pays tribute to the modern woman with yet another fashion revolution
immédiatement New Look.
In 1947, there was a fashion revolution. Christian Dior launched a stunningly explosive new collection, which
was instantly baptised the ‘New Look’. Body-skimming silhouettes with bodices that cinched in the waist. The
legend of the Bar tailor was born. This legend has been kept alive through the work of John Galliano, and is
especially evident in his new project, the ‘New Lock’ bag. A play on words and above all a tribute to the essence
of Christian Dior himself. Like the Bar jacket, it is inspired by the female form. The sophisticated clasp, the
famous perforated caning, the hand weaving and embroidery – the bag’s supple and sensual curves pay homage
to the modern-day Dior woman. Whether she goes for the pink lamb skin, the pearly patent calfskin or the
python version, she will still be a multi-faceted woman, like actress Nora Arnezeder, the heroine of the short clips
directed by Peter Linbergh and Darius Khondji. A stunning tribute.
Hästens launches a collection of even more comfortable beds
Sleep is a gift that restores the body and enfolds us in the magic of dreams. So why not entrust those precious
hours of repose to those who’ve made sleep an art. Hästens, the bed maker founded in Sweden in 1852, has
conserved the traditions of the master craftsmen in the firm belief that no machine will ever be capable of
replacing manual expertise and natural materials. The new season ushers in the Continental models (2000T II,
Excelsior II and Luxuria) complete with an innovative system of individually mounted springs that are soft and
pliable on the surface and firmer at the base of the frame to support your body’s weight no matter how much
you move during sleep. The perfect recipe for drifting into oneiric experiences of total wellbeing. Each Hästens
bed is made entirely by hand and signed by the master craftsman who made it, without resorting to glue and
nails and using solely 100% natural materials. It’s no wonder then that Hästens beds have been chosen to cradle
the dreams of the Swedish royal house.
The camellia is symbolic at Chanel. This scentless and thornless flower, with its regular, almost symmetrical
petals, which is highly valued in China for its healing powers, became the emblem of Coco Chanel at the very
start of her career. She liked to pin it to her dresses and to place it delicately on a fabric like a sort of accessory.
Over the years the camellia hasn’t lost its value within the brand- it constantly appears in the ready to wear and
couture collections designed by Karl Lagerfeld and has even been used as an inspiration for a jewellery collection.
Chanel Jewellery demonstrates extraordinary craftsmanship with its precious and delicate jewels. The “Camélia
Ajouré” collection proposes rings and earrings in 18 carat yellow gold and also set with diamonds. Sensual and
discreet, they go perfectly with a soberly chic outfit or even with a sensual evening dress for a big event. The
cuff-bracelet provides the final touch to an elegant wardrobe and will certainly become one of your favourite
pieces of jewellery- to be worn for special occasions.
Highlights of the Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2010
collections from the world’s biggest fashion houses
BY NATALIA GRGONA
PHOTO: KARL LAGERFELD AT CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE
Christian Dior, Givenchy, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stéphane Rolland, etc.
Haute couture is a French specialty which is still alive today. It
represents the expertise, quality and incredible craftsmanship boasted
by a handful of the major fashion houses since their birth. Today only
a few major labels offer these tailor-made collections. Beautifully made
pieces are woven, embroidered and worked in luxurious fabrics by skilled
craftsmen, who spend countless hours slaving over their masterpieces, and
are finally presented at the haute couture shows.
The shows are held twice a year (in January and July) and wow not
only the world-wide press, but also clients who have come from all four
corners of the globe and who are not afraid to wear these extraordinary
clothes. These women are not just queens and princesses, First Ladies
and celebrities, but also wealthy ladies from the United States, the Middle
East, Asia and Russia, who have always dreamed of wearing Chanel,
Christian Dior, Givenchy, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Stéphane Rolland, etc. These
women can star in their own fairytale as they are turned into modern-day
Cinderellas at the flick of the designer’s wand.
In recent years, a selection of the largest foreign fashion houses have been invited by the Syndicale Chamber
of Haute Couture in Paris to present their haute couture collections. Thus Italian brands like Giorgio Armani,
Versace, Valentino and Lebanese designer Elie Saab are able to show off their exceptional craftsmanship and
savoir-faire and continue the art of dressmaking.
For Summer 2010, the biggest fashion houses have once again thrilled us with their creations. Karl Lagerfeld
presented a sweet and sensual version of the Chanel woman with his collection of evening gowns in pastel hues,
embroidered with camellias and sequins, while at Christian Dior John Galliano invited his guests to join him in the
hallowed salons of Dior where he presented 1950s ladies sporting exquisite clothes and ever-increasing volumes.
Jean-Paul Gaultier expressed a desire to travel to distant lands of Mexico by transforming his models into
Amazonian women, who sported tops and skirts made out of tulle, feathers and strips of pleated silk.
RING IN PINK GOLD DESIGNED IN
THE ICONIC BEE THEME
fut notre premier grand client.
To mark the first day of the celebration of Haute Joaillerie in Paris
in January, we met Lionel Giraud, creative director at Chaumet. He
talked to us in detail about the brand’s latest collection, based on the
bee... not to be missed!
how did bees become the inspiration for this Chaumet collection?
We are partners and sponsors of an association called ‘Save the
Bees’ of which the aim is to protect bees. This made sense for
Chaumet, particularly since the bee has always been something of
an emblem for our house. Indeed historically it was the symbol
of Napoleon I who was our first important customer. Thus it is a
way of celebrating our 230th anniversary with a collection that
celebrates the bee in all its forms.
how did you work the bee into your jewellery?
We really wanted to break away from the stereotypical motifs that people would expect
to see in a bee-themed collection. One would expect to see yellow and black pieces
crafted in a naturalistic and realistic style but we wanted to move away from that image
and do something a bit more fun and crazier in terms of the use of colours, shapes and
general intention.
It is a genuine creation and we tried to use the most magnificent gems. We took two
lines of beautiful, finely cut emeralds and instead of working them in a conventional
manner to make two beautiful pairs of drop earrings, we decided to break up this double
line and mix it with pink sapphires. So we ended up with clusters of pink sapphires and
we decided to go for an Indian look in terms of style and colour. As for the necklace, it
fastens with a small bee which is made out of violet sapphires.
On a toujours
Chaumet is particularly well known for its bejewelled head-pieces, which seem to have really come back
into fashion over the last few months.
I really like the bejewelled head pieces and I am fortunate enough to work for a jewellery house that has always
designed and crafted these pieces. We have always created wreaths, headbands, crests and tiaras. I don’t think
that a jewellery collection can be complete without a bejewelled head piece, to be honest. For Chaumet not
having a tiara in our collection is as unthinkable as not having a wedding dress in an haute couture collection.
It’s a huge part of our history, and it seems that it-girls love it too! Traditionally we sold these head pieces for
special occasions, like weddings but today they are fashion accessories. These tiaras will not just be worn once.
We are also beginning to feature more reasonably priced models in our jewellery collections and all kinds of head
pieces: like 1920s-style head bands and bejewelled hair pins. These pieces allow women to stand out from the
crowd and are real fashion accessories. We always say that these jewels allow people to be spotted by God and I
love this connotation. It is both the ultimate fashion accessory and a connection to the almighty power above.
And if we need to further extol the virtues of seduction that a Chantelle bra can offer you, we can confirm that
the softness and transparence of the materials will ensure you a timeless femininity. And let’s not forget the vital
details: this famous fit and daily support is due to years of research and listening to real women, as well as the
incredible lightness which makes us almost forget we’re wearing anything... It’s said that the brand gained its
reputation purely by word of mouth so don’t hesitate to spread the word around your friends.
Classic Twist
The Lanvin menswear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver,
reveals all in this exclusive interview: his vision,
passion and inspiration
by Natalia GRGONa
Je me sentais quelque
Perhaps you have spotted Lucas Ossendrijver at the end of the Lanvin menswear fashion shows. That’s
because he is the designer who is in the process of evolving and changing the notion of menswear in this
illustrious fashion house. Originally from Holland, he has been working alongside Alber Elbaz, the brand’s
artistic director since 2006. Meet him.
What image did you have of lanvin before you started working for the brand?
I didn’t have a very clear image of Lanvin. I did however have an ingrained notion of its quality, craftsmanship
and custom tailoring. For me it was basically about shirts and suits. I had never gone into a Lanvin boutique
before working there. I heard that they were looking for a menswear designer and I greatly admired Alber
Elbaz and all that he had done for the women’s line. So I already felt a connection to the brand in some way.
I sent an application and a week later I had a meeting with him and that’s pretty much how it started. It was
very spontaneous. When I met him I found myself in the little office which belonged to Jeanne Lanvin, which
has remained practically untouched. Alber Elbaz hadn’t even seen my work but we had a chat and I think that
we just clicked. I knew that there was this notion of quality and hard work and that there would be lots of
opportunities for development.
is there a real sense of team work with alber Elbaz, the creative director?
Everyone does their own thing. My studio is located underneath the menswear boutique and his is below
the ladies womenswear boutique. The aim, so that the menswear and womenswear go together, is to create
a common thread between them so that they don’t remain as two different entities. We are in constant
communication. He has a different take on things. We have completely different personalities- almost opposites.
I think it is this factor that leads us down such an interesting path. It’s also important to have someone so close
at hand. If I am in doubt about something, I can show him. It’s really an exchange of ideas.
Where do you find inspiration in your role as menswear designer?
I don’t think that at the start of every season we rethink what we have done and try to do the opposite,
particularly in the world of men’s fashion. It’s more of an evolution than a revolution. It’s our desires that
change. It’s mainly a reflection on the modern man: where he is today, what he needs, because it’s man’s role
in society that changes more than anything else. It’s more intuitive than intellectual. We feel things and try to
respond to these feelings accordingly and translate them into our work. I’m not a philosopher and I’m not always
watching everything that’s going on. We follow our desires and those of men in general. Also men have really
evolved over the past few years. They are more interested in fashion and more than ever they dare to show off
this interest by not just wearing the same thing every day. They want new looks; they are more open. It’s quite
exciting at the moment because there are more possibilities than before and more interest in fashion as far as
men are concerned.
how would you define the lanvin man?
He’s someone who has an understanding of quality, who knows how to recognise if an item is well-made and
how to tell the difference. After that it’s a notion of spirit, of openness, willingness to experiment – a man
who isn’t afraid and who knows what he wants. I also think that it’s a notion of trying to move forward. Men’s
fashion is teeming with codes and pieces, like the suit, which are constant fixtures and difficult to change, so we
are trying to push the limits. We want to convey something sensual – a man who isn’t afraid to show his fragility
and who, at the end of the day, loves to play around with clothes and enjoys wearing them.
at lanvin there seems to be a real sense of the importance of detailing, of the cut and of well-made clothes?
When I’m designing the menswear I think predominately about the construction as this is what interests me
the most. I change the smallest details; it’s a question of millimetres. At the start of the season, it’s all about
the material. Finding and developing the fabrics. A lot of the time we work exclusively with the fabric makers.
With the materials it’s also important to find the right technique. For me the definition of luxury is something
intimate. It’s for the person who’s going to be wearing it; it shouldn’t look ostentatious; it’s personal. It’s a very
modern take on the way we think about luxury.
What is the lanvin clientele like today?
It’s so varied! I often pass through the boutique since my studio is underneath it. I see old men, who have
been coming to Lanvin for a long time, who have always bought their clothes here and who are always in the
boutique. They buy shirts and suits. I love this loyalty. We didn’t want to revolutionize Lanvin, to make it a
fashion label, as we wanted to keep this classic element. Our strategy was primarily to propose classics with
a twist, to take a slightly different approach, and this is how we have been able to attract younger clients and
clients who want to buy individual pieces like t-shirts, trainers or a pair of trousers and not simply a suit or a
shirt. It’s a new way of buying. We have a clientele of all ages; it’s almost a luxury supermarket. It’s very open
and I think that we’re incredibly lucky to have such a wide range in terms of our clientele.
Hermès celebrates its world-famous scarves
BY YANITA KOSTOVA
Like the Olympian Hermès, the messenger of the Gods and patron saint of travellers,
it takes us on a journey. Through time, fashion and continents. Always constant yet
never the same, at 73 years old and measuring 90 cm squared, it tells a story of arts,
traditions and cultures.
With more than 1500 different designs, it is a heritage that is well guarded at 24 rue
du Faubourg St Honoré. The very first “Jeu des omnibus et des dames blanches” was
created in 1937 by Robert Dumas, director of the Hermès brand. But it was “Brides
de Gala”, designed by Hugo Grygkar and inspired by the world of horse-riding, which
became really famous. When Jean Louis Dumas took the torch from his father in 1978,
the same desire for excellence and innovation guided his movements. Artists have
designed variations around an annual theme which are then transposed onto silk in
workshops in Lyon. It is this meticulous attention to detail at every stage of the process
that produces such exceptional pieces made out of inimitable silk twill. This is a family
history that the new artistic director Pierre Alexis Dumas has excellently preserved.
SILK JERSEY GIVES A SUPERB FLUIDITY TO THE CARRé
This season we can admire the transposition of a painting by African artist George Lilanga which depicts life in
a village in Mozambique in a humorous and light-hearted way. Or the reproduction of “Kelly en Perles” which
was embroidered with miniature multi-coloured beads by a Cameroonian artist. The delicate printing allows
us to fully appreciate the beads pattern in relief and the intricate embroidery. This latest style, measuring
70cm and worked in vintage silk, was crafted in 1997 to celebrate the brand’s 70th anniversary and is
particularly distinctive.
The Hermes scarf is constantly modified. It has been reworked into a triangle, a ribbon and a belt. This year the
best-selling “Brides de Gala” has been released in a giant format measuring 140 cm and worked in twill silk in
seven original colours. A meticulous, old-fashioned process which every season uses new colours to rework a
great icon. The Hermes scarf is a classic which can be passed down from mother to daughter and is thus an icon
which will never go out of fashion.
‘We never stop making new discoveries’. We owe this incredibly enthusiastic
expression, which goes down very well at dinner parties, to French novelist
Colette (1873-1954), who would never have imagined that, more than fifty years
after her death, it could be so well suited to this famous concept store in her
namesake on Rue Saint-Honoré. In March 1997, Colette Rousseaux, aided by
her daughter Sarah Lerfel, had the excellent idea to baptise this 700m squared
boutique, dedicated to style, design, art and gastronomy, with the typically
French name ‘Colette’. A dream come true for the ladies of the television series
Sex and the City- and their avid fans: the boutique has become a touchstone for
international elegance, as illustrated by Stefano Pilati, the designer at Yves Saint
Laurent: “Colette has managed to put a whole area of Paris onto the fashion map.”
On écoute alors
Trendy eccentrics, passing designers and amused or simply curious tourists- 500 visitors per month come to
visit this bright and luminous three-story boutique, decorated in black, white and grey hues. Strictly chic, a
perfect mixture of extravagance and tastefulness: amongst the displays, a wall of iPods catches our attention.
Why not listen to the latest Massive Attack record or the latest release from My Brightest Diamond, only a few
amongst a selection of avant-garde singles, or even the latest official Colette Compilation. There are also glossy
books, trendy magazines, rare films by Antonioni, candles, watches, a huge range of high-tech telephones, hifi
speakers and pocket-sized digital cameras. Then a second wall, this one decorated with colourful trainers,
reminding us that Colette is fashion. We head to the stairs.
NINETY MINERAL WATERS
The first floor perfectly illustrates the boutique’s motto: “Always the same, never the same” through its
impressive mix of famous brands and young designers. The gallery just opposite plays host to new exhibitions
every month: with subjects such as Martin Parr and Karl Lagerfeld. From May 3rd to June 5th, there will be an
exhibition of sculptures and paintings by Darcel, a frequent collaborator. And if all of this delectable artwork has
made you a little peckish, head down to the basement.
the restaurant at Colette is guarded by Oscar, a friendly dog which, by all accounts, “loves snoop dogg”.
but the hip hop loving dog is not the restaurant’s only attraction: a ‘water bar’ proposing a selection of
no less than 90 different mineral waters (!) accompanied, for example, by a slice of cake, devilishly named
‘Cake moss’! Colette is a living art form, a shrine, where there is always something new to discover...
IWC – PORTUGUESE AUTOMATIC
“Héros des mers, noble people…”, ainsi commence l’hymne national
portugais.
grands navigateurs portugais continuent à vivre encore aujourd’hui.
exceptionnelles !
“Heroes of the sea, noble race...”, runs the first line of the Portuguese
national anthem. It is an expression of the collective memory, in which
the great seafarers of Portugal are still very much alive to the present
time. The spirit of navigation was the theme at IWC this year with the
celebration of its Portuguese collection, which enters its eighth decade.
The “Portuguese Automatic” – with the large, IWC-manufactured
51011-calibre movement and seven-day power reserve – has also
undergone a facelift. This watch with a 42.3-millimetre case is now
offered in red gold instead of rose gold and has solid red gold appliqués.
The steel variant now features a silver-plated dial and rose gold-plated
hands and appliqués. With the Portuguese collection, IWC pays ultimate
homage to gallant navigators over 500 years ago. Now, you can brave
AUDEMARS PIGUET - ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE CHRONOGRAPH
Oak Offshore Tour Auto 2010.
Since it was founded in 1875, the Audemars Piguet Manufacture has upheld the art of Haute Horlogerie around
the same values: tradition, excellence and innovation. Ever since Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste
Piguet created a manufacture specializing in clocks and watches in the Swiss village of Le Brassus, this reliance
on craftsmanship and a deep understanding has been maintained well into the 21st century. Exceptional
pieces, some of which take up to eight months to manufacture, are made in the workshops. The assembly and
adjustment are done entirely by hand thus keeping to the traditional methods. The satin-finished sides, the cogs,
the pearled casing and the Côtes de Genève decor are just a few examples of this excellence. Because, according
to Audemars Piguet, shouldn’t a watch be as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside? Certainly, the
creative emotion invested into the beauty of these exceptional pieces is matched only by the technology used
to manufacture them. The inventiveness and creative audacity are closely linked to the passion of beauty. The
unprecedented number of “world firsts” demonstrates the absolute mastery of the avant-garde techniques. This
year, to celebrate its status as the Official Timepiece of the Tour Auto Optic 2000, the house is launching a new
limited edition collection made up of 60 pieces entitled the Royal Oak Offshore Tour Auto 2010 Chronograph. This
watch is the embodiment of power and protection. A symbol of strength and independence of Audemars Piguet.
A recognisable motif, an exemplary
craftmanship and a hundred-year-old
luggage maker called Goyard
by Natalia GRGONa
suite commande. Les malles et bagages Goyard ne cesseront d’évoluer, tout en restant une histoire de famille ;
The Goyard brand doesn’t rely on a celebrity face to help sell its products; neither does it need to advertise
itself in newspapers and magazines. Its name alone has been enough to attract attention for over a century.
With its discreet and very selective boutiques, Goyard, which was born in 1853 and has been based at 233 rue
Saint Honoré ever since, has over time become one of the most famous luxury leather goods brands not only
in France but also worldwide. Its stylish chevron motif is easily recognizable. We take a look at the defining
moments of this business which is synonymous with success.
A FAMILY HISTORY
In 1853, François Goyard bought shares in the famous Morel brand, a well-established and famous trunk maker,
where he worked with his son, Edmond. Incredibly ambitious and fascinated by his craft, at the start of the 20th
century 25-year-old Edmond took over the company and came up with a trademark fabric woven out of linen,
cotton and hemp, covered with a stylized motif pattern of the three interlaced chevrons. This “Y” motif evokes
the universal link between the tree, the man and the letter ‘y’ in the family name. Edmond realised very quickly
that in order to sustain this new luxury luggage collection, he must offer the very best. Every piece had to be
carefully tailor-made according to the desires and needs of the customer. And the Goyard trunk was born. It
represents the brand’s entry into the modern era and the international aristocracy quickly caught on, from the
Duke and Duchess of Windsor to John Rockefeller, from American presidents to Asian maharajahs.
Year after year, as the company passed from father to son, the Goyard entrepreneurs continued to shine in the
elite world of luggage-makers. In 1931, they obtained a patent for the design of a ‘Malle Bureau’: a portable box
which when opened transforms into a writing tablet with drawers. The world fell in love with it and writer Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle went straight to order one for himself. The Goyard trunks and luggage never stop evolving
and are engrained in the family’s heritage. The company was handed down from father to son until 1998 when
the businessman Jean-Pierre Signoles bought the brand, which he now runs with his two sons. A new family
history which upholds the skill and craftsmanship central to the brand, whilst ensuring its independence.
STACKED JEWELLERY CASE
A LUXURY TRUNK-MAKER AND MADE-TO-MEASURE
Today the house is known primarily for its famous canvas made of a mixture of
linen, hemp and cotton, which is manufactured in the brand’s own workshops.
A canvas which over the years, thanks to developments in technology, has been
made waterproof and fade resistant. This craftwork allows Goyard to emphasise the
detailing, executed entirely by hand, which makes each piece so unique. The brand
also creates custom-made pieces and special orders, of which there are numerous
examples: a trunk designed to carry a polo player’s equipment, another designed to
transport a bike, others created to hold perfumes, cigars and even caviar ... Each trunk
is numbered and bears a reference label with the name of the worker handwritten
inside. During its development into a respected maker of luxury leather goods, Goyard
was one of the first brands to create a recognisable motif: its famous Y has become as
familiar as Louis Vuitton’s ‘LV’... While the latter has worked hard to make sure that
their monogram become known worldwide as a symbol of ostentatious luxury, Goyard
has targeted an upscale clientele which prefers a more discreet chic.
VINTAGE LUGGAGE PIECES
Their tailor-made service is simply a natural progression from the
customisation that Goyard has offered its clients from the very
start. A client can request that his or her initials or other symbols
be monogrammed on their luggage- and they will of course be
painted on by hand.
Today Jean-Pierre Signoles continues to encourage uniqueness. He has
opened a new boutique, directly opposite 233 rue Saint Honoré, which
is dedicated to animal accessories, like a travel food-bowl and even
a bag for cats. He is also moving Goyard into the world of fashion,
developing various bags which he has produced in a selection of
vibrant colours. And fashionistas and celebrities alike seem to approve.
The Goyard bag is all over the pages of every magazine, yet not once
has the product been advertised…
Just twenty minutes outside of Paris, in Ville d’Avray, there is an unusual hotel with 43
bedrooms, which boasts a restaurant run by the chef Benoit Bordier, an artists’ cafe and
a viewing point which looks directly onto the water… A beautiful view not unlike the
exceptional service: words cannot describe the Vinotherapy spa, which offers a selection
of exclusive vine and grape based treatments in its Caudalie products, like the Honey
and Wine wrap, the Crushed Cabarnet exfoliating treatment... There is a relaxing, exotic
vibe with a relaxation room boasting a steam bath, showers surrounded by stones and
bamboo shoots and an outdoor Jacuzzi heated to 37 degrees. A pastoral haven, located
only a few minutes away from the capital, where you can happily spend an afternoon or
weekend doing absolutely nothing.
We have always loved the Italian charm of this hotel, which is situated just around the corner
to take guests on a journey beyond the Italian frontier...even if the delicious concoctions by the
One of Pershing hall’s best ideas was to create in the centre of the building, underneath the
tranquillity of the location, far from prying eyes, where you almost feel like you should whisper?
like its cousin the hotel Kube, the murano brunch is definitely worth the trip, both for its musical
ambiance and its subtle and welcoming décor. With regard to the brunch, there are two menus:
the second includes a bottle of champagne. the menu is constantly renewed, thus allowing you to
return frequently and try the new dishes concocted by chef antoine Perray. the savoury buffet
is made up of delicate specialities like Russian caviar salad and olive tajine. you will undoubtedly
love the creations on the sweet buffet and let’s not forget the dessert table, which will leave you
Perched in the 18th arrondissement, the modern, stylish hotel Kube, famed for its parties
frequented by famous DJs, which is perched in the 18th arrondissement, is worth the trip even
on Sunday for its hearty brunch. Thought up by the chef Nicolas Guillard, this arty brunch
proposes a selection of savoury specialities like foie gras, tuna tartar and crab terrine. Another
buffet is filled with sweet surprises like strawberry tiramisu, two-chocolate mousse as well
as different juices and hot drinks on tap. The concept of finger-food, which is so dear to this
establishment, plays an important role, although the dishes are always presented with creativity.
The best bit about this brunch: you can relax on the sofas and take in the good music. Or,
during the summer months, you can take advantage of the courtyard and brunch outside.
Since the Costes brothers never do anything by half, it’s now the turn of Thierry
dishes, ideal for sharing on a date or before going out dancing in the area.
ViP ROOm
this is, quite literally, the place where all the very important people hang out. a
justified statement: in this undeniable Parisian hotspot, lenny Kravitz sips on dom
Perignon, lady Gaga, justice, the black-Eyed Peas and sean Paul have all given
private concerts and Vin diesel relaxes after his promotional work. it was a risky
move and a big challenge to take on: after 10 years on the Champs-Elysées, ViP
Room moved to a new location just a few minutes from the louvre and the hotel
Costes, in the place of the mythical scala. the master of ceremony, jean-Roch, has
designed a three-storey ‘box of lights’ made up of an upmarket restaurant, an art
gallery, a café and a ‘concept-store’ open practically all day, smoking rooms that
diffuse chlorophyll and finally a gargantuan dance floor (capacity: 3000 people)
where you can dance the night away to “house, hip hop and 80s tunes- although
special guests can request whatever they want”. are you on the list?
In his youth Marcel Proust wrote ‘In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower’ here.
Planted in 1778 under the wishes of Philippe d’Orleans, the most aristocratic park
in Paris is laid out in an English style – it is adorned with golden railings and
boasts a Chinese fort, a white marble temple, an island of flowers, a windmill
and a number of charming follies: an Egyptian pyramid, statues of Chopin and
Maupassant, as well as an adorable Renaissance bridge. A delicately bourgeois
setting- just right for a delicious picnic lunch on the grass, underneath the
Located in the Latin Quarter, the stomping ground of the student
community, it is a key part of Parisian life: safe in the knowledge
that, close by, the senators are working on reformulating our
country’s laws, you can make yourself comfortable on the antique
iron chairs, around the Grand Bassin, in which little children sail
small plastic boats. Sitting there, cast your mind to Maupassant,
who, once upon a time, wrote: “It was like a forgotten garden of
the last century, as pretty as the gentle smile of an old lady. (…)
here and there one came across beds of flowers, lines of little trees
looking like schoolboys out for a walk, cluster of magnificent rose
bushes, or regiments of fruit trees.” And things haven’t changed a
bit. Simply add puppet shows, carriage rides. And you.
During the hot months, this ultra-modern park, built between 1990 and 1992 over the
which are 15 metres high. You can play table tennis, mess around with a toboggan or
even fly away: every half an hour a giant helium-filled balloon transports 30 adults and
In the wake of Pré Catelan, this immense outdoor theatre, opened in 1953, is made up of sculpted gardens
which pay homage to four of the most famous plays by the English playwright: the Greek wood from
Midsummer Night’s Dream; the moors and yew trees from Macbeth and Hamlet, reminiscent of Scotland and
Denmark; and finally the sombre vegetation from As You Like It – a reference to Arden Forest, near to where
William Shakespeare was both born and buried. Each garden is dotted with quotations from his works, which
are played out every summer in the open air. As the author of Richard VI once said: ‘Here are the French: they
Montaigne Market, a multi-brand concept store (57 avenue Montaigne, Tel. +33 (0) 1 42 56 58 58).
Have lunch at the Louis² bar (ask for the table closest to the fireplace), the restaurant at the Hotel
de la Trémoille, and choose a delicious plate of lobster linguini.
Head over to Rue Passy, in the 16th arrondissement, which is well known for its gorgeous shops
and its chic Parisian vibe.
Rendez-vous au Bristol (Hôtel Le Bristol, 112 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, Tel. +33 (0)1 53 43
Have a drink at the Bristol (Hôtel Le Bristol, 112 rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, Tel. +33 (0)1 53
43 43 00) and try one of the cocktails created by my friend Pascal Havel.
Pop into the Etro boutique (66 rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, Tel. +33 (0)1 45 48 18 17) for their
great present ideas, like their selection of elegant and discreet perfumes.
Dîner chez Hélène Darroze (4 rue d’Assas, Tel. +33 (0) 1 42 22 01 11), spécialités landaises avec le
chef Frédéric Duca.
Dinner at Hélène Darroze (4 rue d’Assas, Tel. +33 (0) 1 42 22 01 11) where you will enjoy
Landaise specialities by Chief Frédéric Duca.
the job oF our
Dreams
We talk to Frédéric Beauché, a Member of the Cléfs d’Or
and the Head concierge of Murano Resort in Paris
by Natalia GRGONa
J’ai dû me
What is the most satisfying thing about your job?
Nothing is more gratifying than a client’s satisfaction- when
they have had a marvellous dinner in a restaurant that we have
recommended to them, or have loved a play that we have
advised them to see. When they have had a wonderful stay as
a result of our hard work!
What is the biggest challenge that you have had to face
during your time as concierge?
The biggest challenge I have ever had to face was about 15
years ago when a client wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower but
without queuing, and he wanted to be the only one in the lift!
At that time, such a privilege was reserved only for heads of
state! I spent the morning on the phone but nothing could
be done. I had to go there in order to finally obtain such a
privilege for the client.
What are the must-see sights for someone visiting Paris?
I would always advise my clients to visit the old parts of Paris
like L’île de la Cité, the Marais and the magnificent Place
des Vosges. There is also a selection of charming little, very
Parisian museums like the Rodin, Jacquemart André and
Picasso museums. Finally I would finish with a ballet at Opéra
Garnier, which is completely heavenly.
This is, without a doubt, the most charming and the best located hotel that Florence has to offer. Ideally situated
right in the centre of the city, the Relais Santa Croce is merely a stone’s throw away from the Duomo. Set in an
authentic 18th century palace, which has recently been renovated, the hotel is bursting with Italian charm. With
an incredible view of the city, the hotel is a perfect example of contemporary elegance- mixing modern design
and vintage furniture in its bedrooms. The sumptuous ceilings are adorned with frescos which can be admired
in all their splendour, while three Michelin-starred restaurant “Guelfi e Ghibellini” certainly makes the trip
