From the Editor
For this month of our E-newsletter, EHWM welcomes all readers to the soaking
rainy season with the stories about fertilizer which is very important to farmers.
Compost fertilizer or organic fertilizer can be produced in the household with
the simple process by fermenting together the useless or residue materials derived
from the nature, for example leaves, animal manure, animal remains. The microorganisms
in nature will decompose them to be fertilizer that is ready to nourish
the soil in your garden. However, to increase agricultural products with chemical
fertilizer causes so many impacts to the environment and our health nowadays.
Therefore, it has to carefully study and find out alternatives to replace or reduce
the chemical fertilizer. Research study entitled “Composting of Pig Manure with
Agricultural Wastes in Northern Thailand“, which was carried out by Assoc. Prof.
Dr. Surapong Wattanachira and his team from Department of Environmental Engineering,
Chiang Mai University, presented the study result of the composting of pig
manure mixed with agricultural wastes such as soybean hulls, which is an alternative
for your choice.
Finally, all readers are encouraged to send in your suggestions and opinions
as well as information, articles, and knowledge concerning environment, particularly
on hazardous substances and waste. Your feedback and contributions are
valued, as they help us to improve our newsletter.
Composting of Pig Manure with Agricultural Wastes in
Northern Thailand
The composting of pig manure mixed with soy hull in the mixture ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1 (dry
weight basis) were studied. The experiments were conducted in perforated plywood composting boxes with
total 120 days of the experimental period.
During composting period, the mixtures within composting boxes were turned over and water was added.
The optimal time regarding temperature and C/N ratio of composting for mixture ratios of 1:1 2:1, 3:1, and
5:1 were 41, 41, 44, and 46 days, respectively. The optimal moisture content range was between 40 and 60
%. The carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N ratio) were 10.5, 9.8, 10.5, and 7.1 and the electrical conductivity (EC)
were 4.25, 3.25, 3.99, and 3.23 mS/cm of the composts with mixture ratios of 1:1 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1, respectively.
The cationic exchange capacity (CEC) of the composts in all mixture ratios was in the range of 84.7-
106.5 meq/100 g dry weight. The tendency of physical and chemical characteristics including temperature,
pH, C/N ratio, CEC, and EC of the composts from all mixture ratios were similar. While the size distributions
of the compost materials were represented as normal distribution and these composts could be classified as
the well composting. The pathogenic microorganisms were not found in all compost materials. Regard to the
acceptable quality of the composts standard by Land Development Department and Thai Industrial Standard
Institute, the composts of all mixture ratios could be identified to be the good compost. However, in waste
management aspect, composting of pig manure mixed with soy hull in the mixture ratio of 5:1 was the most
effective ratio.
EUTROPHICA-
Fertilizer...beneficial or harmful
Most farmers in Thailand lack of sufficient knowledge on soil and
fertilizer. Even there is a lot of related knowledge developed to assist
them, but the knowledge distribution was limited only among scholars
and farmer leaders. One reason is the difficulty of knowledge transfer.
The composition of soil, which is comprised of organic matter, minerals,
water, and air, is so complicated and inconstant. Moreover, there
are many types of fertilizers and several formulas, especially commercial
chemical fertilizers which there are nearly 800 formulas in the market.
Meanwhile soil fertility depends on various factors such as land use characteristic, behavior of fertilizers using,
and natural disasters that is able to affect to soil conditions. Therefore, farmers should analyze soil before
using fertilizers every two years.
Type of fertilizer
There are two main types of fertilizer: organic fertilizer and inorganic fertilizer, as following
details.
1. Organic fertilizers derived from a living plant or animal
source which includes well-rotted animal and animal waste, for
example manure, compost manure, green manure. Though humans
have used organic fertilizer since ancient times, the initiated
concept of natural nutrients efficiency improvement has
stimulated the development of inorganic fertilizer or chemical
fertilizer that has higher concentrations of nutrients than organic
fertilizer. Consequently, some farmers have reduced using or
even have not used organic fertilizers or organic materials anymore.
Organic fertilizer was classified into different types as follows.
• Manure derived from feces and urine of human and animals which are the rest of farm product.
To use manure, we have to be careful because the new manure can harm plants, due to the
saltiness and heat that occurred during the decomposition process. In addition, it may have
problems of weeds, disease or insect contaminated in manure. Therefore, it should be well
fermented and decomposed before using.
• Compost derived from the fermentation of plant remains by regularly watering and turning over
from time to time. Animal manure, chemical fertilizers and booster may be added as a mixture
to increase the quality of compost fertilizer and shorten the fermentation period.
The high standard quality compose should have the following characteristics:
1. Fertilizer grade should be not less than 1:1:0.5 (nitrogen: phosphorus: potassium).
2. Moisture and volatile matter should be not more than 35-40% by weight.
3. pH should be between 6.0 - 7.5.
4. Well-composted fertilizer should not have contaminations.
5. Well-composted fertilizer must not have heat remains.
6. The amount of organic matter must be between 25-50%.
7. ratio of carbon to nitrogen must be less than 20 to 1.
• Liquid Organic Fertilizer or liquid bio-fertilizer made by using sugar or molasses to extract nutrient
from plant and animal cells. Anaerobic microorganisms are used for decomposing in
fermentation process until the liquid turn to be brown color. Useful or beneficial microbial will
control harmful microbial, keep nitrogen in the soil and produce plant hormones to stimulate the
growth of root and create immunization. Therefore, the plants grow up strongly with good quality.
Most of all, organic fertilizer is an alternative to reduce chemical using as well as provide
safety for both farmers and consumers.
• Green manure made by ploughing up and over the fiber and stubble of plants after harvesting.
The debris will let to decompose, before planting, for 1-2 months until it releases the nutrients.
Legumes are often used as green manure crops for their easy growth and nitrogen fixing abilities.
For good benefit in producing green manure, chopping and ploughing the plants when they
are half-blooming to get good quality and high weight per hectare. Other advantage of green
manure is that raw materials can be available at the farm, so there is no transportation costs.
2. Inorganic fertilizers came from non-organic sources which was regularly found in nature. They
are also known as chemical fertilizer. Inorganic fertilizers were
divided into 2 types according to the component of primary nutrients
(N-P-K) as follows.
• Single fertilizers are chemical fertilizers that contain only
1 kind of primary nutrients, such as Ammonium Sulfate
Fertilizer (21-0-0) contains Nitrogen (N) 21%, Potassium
Nitrate Fertilizer (13-0-0) contains Nitrogen (N) 13%, Potassium
Chloride Fertilizer (0-0-60) contains Potassium (K)
60%, Potassium Sulfate Fertilizer (0-0-50) contains Potassium (K) 50%, etc.
• Mixed Fertilizers or bulk blending fertilizers are from the mixing of single fertilizers to increase
nutrients under appropriate N, P and K for each specific fertilizer. Mixed fertilizers are generally
found in the markets due to its popularity. In addition, with today’s technological advances, the
elements of mixed fertilizers are blended homogeneously. The fertilizer content is not compacted
or agglomerated during long-term storage and very easy to use.
Fertilizers Act of 1975 indicated that chemical fertilizer manufacturers had to specify the amount of
fertilizer nutrients on the label which meant as follows.
• The first number of fertilizer formula refers to the amount of total nitrogen (% N).
• The second number of fertilizer formulation refers to the amount of useful phosphorus. (% P 2
O 5)
Fertilizers Utilization Impacts
Impact on the environment
The popularity of chemical fertilizers utilization among farmers
in Thailand becomes higher every year. In 2011, the use of
chemical fertilizers reached 5.4 million tons. It severely impacted
on the environment, especially nitrogen and phosphate that
contaminated to the water were the cause of marine animal
extinction. Water is a media in transporting nitrogen and phosphate,
which are the main nutrients of sea animals. Though
these nutrients can nourish plants in aquatic environments and
fertilize sea creatures, but if they were over distributed in the
environment, oxygen will be reduced and cause the extinction
of some living things. This phenomenon called a EUTROPHICATION which is one of the major pollution
problems. Excessive nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems will reduce oxygen in water till fishes and other creatures
can not respire and die. As a result, biodiversity will be changed and the amount of blue-green algae, which
released toxins, will increase. Moreover, global climate change may promote the proliferation of toxic algae
in the near future. Meanwhile, the over use of chemical fertilizer could adversely affect to soil by destroying
micro-organisms, degrading soil quality or causing soil erosion. The study results of Greenpeace Southeast
Asia on the effects after using of chemical fertilizers for agriculture in 3
provinces of Thailand, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi and Suphanburi, found
the contamination of excessive nitrate in water resource and ground water.
Asparagus field in Kanchanaburi, where asparagus has been grown
throughout the year in the community, is the case study of high level
nitrate-contaminated water. The fertilizers were excessively used to 200
kg / ha / year, or 1120 kg / ha / year. This meant that it was 70 times
over the limit, which was 16 kg / ha / year. Furthermore, the study in
Chile presented that using a large quantity of fertilizers did not help to increase the yield. In contrary, the crops
tend to produce a good yield if appropriate fertilizers were applied (8 kilograms per hectare). Most of all, it
will not cause water pollution problem.
Impact on health
The research study from abroad indicated that children who lived in the industrial agriculture area,
where community’s water resources were highly contaminated by nitrate, were a group of highest health risks.
Toxicity of nitrate caused “Blue-baby syndrome” or methemoglobinemia disease. This occurred in infants under
4 months who drank nitrate-contaminated water in excess of 11 mg / l at a time or got the total amount
of nitrate and nitrite in excess of 1mg per day. Blue baby syndrome is the symptom that intestinal bacteria
changed the nitrate to nitrite. Nitrite will absorb and combine with hemoglobin to form methemoglobin that
can result as the blood lacks the ability to carry sufficient oxygen to individual body cells, which finally may
be a cause of death. Adults who drank nitrate-contaminated water may take a risk of gastrointestinal cancer,
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL), bladder cancer and ovarian cancer. When large amounts of nitrate contaminated
in food, such as fish or vegetables, were consumed, it may cause neurological conditions, memory
loss, paralysis, or diarrhea. Symptoms, such as diarrhea, starchy deposits, dizziness, headache, shock, loss
of consciousness, brain damaged from lack of oxygen, may occur slowly and finally cause death. In addition,
pregnant women who received nitrate from food and water may take risk of miscarriage or abortion.
Impact on economic
Nowadays, most farmers use imported fertilizers. In 2009 there were about 3.87 million tons of
chemical fertilizers with a total value of 42.41 million baht were imported. The behavior of using fertilizers in
large quantities by misunderstanding is the major reason of high cost agricultural products, for example the
cost of fertilizer for planting rice is about 20% of the total production cost, while planting palm will cost about
two times of planting rice (40%).
The choice of fertilizers utilization
Employing organic fertilizers or compost is an alternative for
environmental benefit, since they will provide micro-nutrients
and sufficient microbial to the environment and fertile the soil.
Adding compost to the soil can adjust the quality of soil physical,
provide good ventilation, reduce ratio of carbon and nitrogen
and restore soil fertility. The potential in soil physical
condition improvement is a special feature of organic fertilizers
that chemical fertilizers could not do. However, organic fertilizers
are not popular enough to replace chemical fertilizer because the disadvantages of price per unit weight
of nutrients which is higher while the amount of nutrient per unit weight is lower than chemical fertilizer. In
addition, transportation and storage of chemical fertilizers are easier. Furthermore, organic fertilizers release
nutrients slower than chemical fertilizers. The best practice is to use organic fertilizers together with chemical
fertilizers to increase the efficiency of chemical fertilizers.
To solve the problem of excessive use of fertilizers in agriculture, which will not only increase the
product cost but also impact to the environment, the new technology of “Tailor-made Fertilizer” under the
concept “specific fertilizers for specific crops and soils with lower cost” has been recently applied. Although
this technology is rather new for Thai farmers, but it gives a good results of practice since fertilizers will be
specific employed basing on soil analysis data. You can learn more from www.ssnm.agr.ku.ac.th or www.
