carried on a struggle for supremacy with material<strong>is</strong>m from which<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r has emerged <strong>the</strong> vic<strong>to</strong>r. The reason lies in <strong>the</strong> div<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

society in<strong>to</strong> classes. On <strong>the</strong> one hand, in its own interest, <strong>the</strong> oppressing<br />

class must develop and reinforce its ideal<strong>is</strong>t doctrines. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong> oppressed classes, likew<strong>is</strong>e in <strong>the</strong>ir own interest,<br />

must develop and reinforce <strong>the</strong>ir material<strong>is</strong>t doctrines. Both<br />

ideal<strong>is</strong>m and material<strong>is</strong>m are weapons in <strong>the</strong> class struggle, and <strong>the</strong><br />

struggle between ideal<strong>is</strong>m and material<strong>is</strong>m cannot d<strong>is</strong>appear so long<br />

as classes continue <strong>to</strong> ex<strong>is</strong>t. Ideal<strong>is</strong>m, in <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> its h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>rical<br />

development, represents <strong>the</strong> ideology <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exploiting classes<br />

and serves reactionary purposes. Material<strong>is</strong>m, on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> re<strong>vol</strong>utionary class; in a class society, it grows<br />

and develops in <strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> an incessant struggle against <strong>the</strong> reactionary<br />

philosophy <strong>of</strong> ideal<strong>is</strong>m. Consequently, <strong>the</strong> h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

struggle between ideal<strong>is</strong>m and material<strong>is</strong>m in philosophy reflects <strong>the</strong><br />

struggle <strong>of</strong> interests between <strong>the</strong> reactionary class and <strong>the</strong> re<strong>vol</strong>utionary<br />

class. . . . A given philosophical tendency <strong>is</strong> in <strong>the</strong> last analys<strong>is</strong><br />

a manifestation in a particular gu<strong>is</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> policy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social<br />

class <strong>to</strong> which <strong>the</strong> philosophers belong.<br />

The d<strong>is</strong>tingu<strong>is</strong>hing character<strong>is</strong>tic <strong>of</strong> <strong>Marx</strong><strong>is</strong>t philosophy — i.e.,<br />

dialectical material<strong>is</strong>m — <strong>is</strong> its effort <strong>to</strong> explain clearly <strong>the</strong> class<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> all social consciousness NOT (including FOR philosophy). <strong>It</strong> publicly<br />

declares a resolute struggle between its own proletarian nature<br />

and <strong>the</strong> ideal<strong>is</strong>t philosophy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> propertied class. Moreover, it<br />

subordinates its own COMMERCIAL<br />

special and independent tasks <strong>to</strong> such general<br />

tasks as overthrowing capital<strong>is</strong>m, organizing and building a proletarian<br />

dicta<strong>to</strong>rship, and edifying a social<strong>is</strong>t society.<br />

2. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IDEALISM<br />

AND MATERIALISM<br />

Wherein lies <strong>the</strong> basic difference between ideal<strong>is</strong>m and material<strong>is</strong>m?<br />

<strong>It</strong> lies in <strong>the</strong> opposite answers given by <strong>the</strong> two <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> fundamental<br />

question in philosophy, that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship between spirit<br />

and matter (that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> relationship between consciousness and ex<strong>is</strong>tence).<br />

Ideal<strong>is</strong>m considers spirit (consciousness, concepts, <strong>the</strong><br />

subject) as <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> all that ex<strong>is</strong>ts on earth, and matter (nature<br />

and society, <strong>the</strong> object) as secondary and subordinate. Material<strong>is</strong>m
