VERDI : I Vespri Siciliani
bUZZ ALerT
“Erich Kleiber leads the chorus and orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in a vigorous reading of the score … Callas gives a lustrous
performance, absolutely secure, radiantly lyrical, and deeply expressive. Boris Christoff’s Procida is complex, dark, and furiously forceful.
Giorgio Kokolios Bardi is little known, but he is an Arrigo with real presence, and his singing is lyrical and heroic. Enzo Mascherini
brings warmth and dramatic energy to the troubled Monforte. The ensembles that bring the four together at the end of the fourth
and fifth acts … are vocally and dramatically thrilling. The extraordinary singing will motivate fans of larger-than-life, old-fashioned
operatic performances.” — All Music Guide

Neapolitan music from the Renaissance to the 20 th century, featuring
J.S. BACH: Sonatas (6) for harpsichord & violin, BWV 1014–1019
By departing in virtually every respect from the conventional model of the
baroque trio sonata, Bach’s six sonatas for harpsichord and violin let both
instruments participate equally in the unfolding of the thematic-motivic
material. They establish a genuine dialogue between the two performers,
and actually pave the way for the classic duo sonata. The dialogue between
these two musicians is equal and enchanting, and the intimate nature of this
recording draws the listener in immediately.
Millenarium has recorded several discs for Ricercar devoted to the secular
monadic repertoire of the Middle Ages. They are brought together here for a
complete view of a time when the only religious music was Gregorian chant.
The recording includes songs for troubadours and trouvères, tender and bawdy
pieces from the famous Carmina Burana manuscript, and the reconstruction
of the Messe des joueurs. The Danza is devoted to the little-known repertoire
from shadowy English pastorals to the contemporary worlds of Richard
Rodney Bennett and Raymond Yiu, this wide-ranging program is brought to
nuanced life by the outstanding young baritone while the indefatigable Iain
performances on numerous studio and live recordings. Among a great
number of outstanding and talented interpretations of these works,
Richter’s style is unmistakable for its embossed, sculptural modeling
Claude DEBUSSY
Quartet, Trio & Dances
Édouard LALO
Symphonie espagnole
Patric STANDFORD
Orchestral Works
release date: november 13, 2012
Danel Quartet/Francette Bartholomée: harp/Daniel Blumenthal: piano
DEBUSSY: String Quartet in G minor • Danses (2 versions) • Piano Trio in G
Paying homage to Debussy in 2012 was natural for the Brussels-based Danel Quartet, as the city
played an important role in the composer’s musical development. On these recordings, Francette
Bartholomée is an attentive guardian of the magical chromatic harp. This release includes the
long-ignored youthful Trio, resurrected by Daniel Blumenthal.
Nikita Boriso-Glebsky: violin/Jean-Philippe Collard: piano/Sinfonia Varsovia/Augustin Dumay:
conductor
LALO: Symphonie espagnole • Violin Sonata • Arlequin • Guitare
For this sixth volume of Fuga Libera’s collection Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, we find the
magnificent Sinfonia Varsovia under the direction of Augustin Dumay. Prizewinning violinist Nikita
Boriso-Glebsky is one of the best talents of his generation. On this recording, he offers a particularly
welcome program, selecting beautiful lesser-known pieces. Jean-Philippe Collard matches the young
Russian violinist with sparkling keyboard playing, affirming Lalo’s title as a pioneer of chamber
music in France.
Raphael Wallfisch: cello/Royal Scottish National Orchestra/David Lloyd-Jones: conductor
STANDFORD: First Symphony (The Seasons—An English Year) • Cello Concerto • Prelude to a
Fantasy (The Naiades)
These three orchestral pieces represent a highly productive creative period in Patric Standford’s
life. As a teacher at the Guildhall School and regular performer in choral competitions in Hungary,
France, and Estonia during the 1970s, Standford has spent the last decade revisiting and revising
works written during this frenzied period, represented here on CD!

Magnard’s sonata for cello and piano, his last chamber music
composition (1910), is of great beauty. His music for piano solo,
presented here for the first time in total, dates from his youth
(1888–1890).
After Volume 1 won the International Classical Music Award for Early Music,
Volume 2 of The Sixteen’s new series devoted to Palestrina is based around
his glorious antiphon for Christmas Day, Hodie Christus natus est. Palestrina’s
legacy and impact on sacred music worldwide is second to none; he was
a master craftsman whose music composers of all ages have attempted to
emulate. He shapes his music in a beautifully sonorous way using a lot of
suspensions but always coming back into the line of the music.
of the Windsbach Boys Choir after 34 years. Winter & Winter has
chosen this recording as a highlight of his work, newly mastered and in a
refined sound quality. The Windsbach Boys Choir and the Munich Bach
Soloists must be counted among the most outstanding interpreters of the
Christmas Oratorio. The production is accomplished by the prominent
participation of soloists Juliane Banse, Cornelia Kallisch, Markus Schäfer,
Robert Swensen, and Thomas Quasthoff. Bach’s oeuvre takes center stage
and comes to beautiful bloom.
