OakTree Schools4Schools State Summit Issue No 5\Thursday 29 March 2012 Last Friday the annual Schools4Schools summit, run by the Oaktree Foundation, was held at Melbourne University attracting around 70 students from across Melbourne who share a common interest in learning about poverty and other important global issues facing our world. We had 13 students from years 7-12 attend, including Ashley Mallett who spoke passionately about her recent trip to Cambodia on the OakTree Ambassadors' Challenge! We also heard from a group of OakTree volunteers who shared with us their reasons for joining the OakTree Foundation as well as Young Australian of the Year, Marita Cheng. It was an educational, inspiring and fun day for all involved, including several simulation games which illustrated just how fortunate we are in our day to day lives! OakTree Seed Group meetings are held on Tuesday lunchtimes in the drama room here at Tintern, where we learn about global issues such as poverty as well as what life is like for people around the world in a fun and exciting way, proving that young people really can instigate change. Over 1.4 billion people around the world are currently living in extreme poverty. Remember that “Young adults may only make up 25% of the world’s population but we make up 100% of the future” and if we work together as a team, something can be done to greatly reduce world poverty. Also, thank you to Miss Constable who accompanied us to the Schools4Schools summit and for all of her help to organise the day! Issue No 5\Thursday 29 March 2012 The High Five Principles of Career Development The High Five Principles originated when a group of Canadian career development experts were asked to spend a day together to summarise what they knew about life, learning and work, in five concise messages. The High Five Principles are: Change is constant Recognise that the world around you is constantly changing. Be open to change and remain alert to opportunities. Learning is ongoing Strive for continuous personal improvement. Stay motivated by learning new skills and developing new talents. Focus on the journey Don’t focus on one destination only. Recognise that your career journey will be throughout your lifetime. Appreciate and value each experience along the way. Follow your heart Know your self and believe in yourself. Pursue your passion to find fulfilment Discover ways to combine interests with career opportunities. Access your allies. Rely on the support of your family friends, mentors, colleagues and peers. Career success can be a team effort. The High Five have proven to have a universal quality and resonate with people from all walks of life. The have been used to promote career development primarily for young people and the messages are now finding their way into materials and activities around the world. Vocational Testing – Year 11 & 12 students There are still places available for the Vocational Testing Program (Morrisby testing) held on Monday April 16 starting at 1.00pm in C10 in the Anderson Centre. his program is conducted in conjunction with Career Analysts and will provide students with a report of their abilities and career preferences. For further information see www.careeranalysts.com.au Students who are not sure what they would like to do on leaving school, or wanting to confirm their present career ideas, are encouraged to consider participating in this program. The first part of the program requires 3 hours to do some written work. Following the testing day a feedback session will be held for students and parents at Tintern in the Theatre on Tuesday 8 May commencing at 7.30pm. Morrisby testing is a fee for service program and the cost will be $80.00.
