Making a Difference in Our Schools
“Poetry . . . I’d describe it as a true feeling.”
“Poetry can be a memory.”
“I liked making the word pools about being scared, happy and surprised.”
Reading these lines from a group of elementary
students lifts our spirits, and makes us
wish we had been part of the poetry workshop
they so enjoyed. Insights gained from enrichment
opportunities such as these are precious,
and fundamental to childhood. Whether they
are inside their school or out in the world,
children must have the capacity to imagine,
create and express themselves as they grow
towards adulthood.
Berkeley Public Education Foundation is all about enrichment; through our
grant, volunteer and special supported programs we respond to innovative
educators looking to add depth and breadth to learning, as in the poetry
workshop those Berkeley Arts Magnet 5 th graders described above. There are
few resources, beyond a teacher’s own wallet, that can be used for what some
call these discretionary—but we call essential—investments in a well­rounded
public education. We step in every year and put the dollars you provide directly
into schools and classrooms, where they produce tangible results.
This is a time when critical, creative and independent thinking are indispensable
to success in higher education and the workplace. At BPEF, this inspires
us as never before to raise funds for those hundreds of educators whose
focused optimism and courage keep them striving for excellence regardless of
budgetary constraints. When their reports come back at year’s end, telling us of
all that our grants made possible, it inspires us to begin again come September.
So we are here sharing our work—which is really the work of wonderful students
and teachers—and thanking you for the role you play in making it possible. Your
generosity truly can make a difference!

Classroom Grants 2009–10
“ I enjoyed the meditation fountain because it looked majestic, almost
like it could tell a story.”
A trip to the Asian Art Museum inspired a John Muir 3rd grader to write this
wonderful reflection about her day. Time and time again, we receive letters from
students thanking us for the field trip, updated equipment, new books, or artist
visit that ignited their enthusiasm and imagination.
BPEF classroom grants mutually benefit teachers and students—every grant
supports a teacher’s delivery and a student’s experience of curriculum. our
purchase of document cameras at several schools is a perfect example: the
ability of the entire class to see work and objects projected on a large screen
is grabbing students’ attention and expanding options for teachers:
“ It helps me focus . . . it helps the whole class do math at the same time
. . . it helps our teacher” Rosa Parks third graders write.
“ It has completely changed how I teach my class . . . we can toggle the
internet, look at a graph, talk about how our work compares to that
solution,” reports a Willard Middle School math teacher.
Every year the awarding of classroom grants introduces us to new teachers
and ideas, or rekindles our relationship with veteran educators who build upon
previous requests. We are approached by grade level teams energized by their
collaboration, and by individual teachers with a project unique to their classroom.
Their efforts and ideas deserve as much as we—and you—can give!
This Grant helped me realize a little dream of mine—to prove
that any student can and will read if you put the right book in
his or her hands. Thank you!

Berkeley School Volunteers 2009–10
The 2009­2010 school year was a time of expansion and continued change for
Berkeley School Volunteers, a Berkeley Public Education Foundation program
that annually infuses over $1 million worth of time and talent into our schools.
BSV grew its volunteer participation by 60% last year, thanks to active recruiting
and the buzz that positive volunteer stories and teacher experiences create.
Individual volunteers supported 200 teachers, and others gave their time to
work in after school programs, school gardens, libraries and various special
projects. In addition we facilitated organizations that focus volunteers on
particular sites or activities, such as Starting Blocks, a life skills program in the
Community Partnerships Academy at Berkeley high; congregation members
of the First Presbyterian Church and Revelation Baptist Church who jumped in
to support longfellow Middle School; Bayer Corporation, which maintained its
strong presence at Rosa Parks; and the WriterCoach Connection that provided
writing support for the three middle schools and at Berkeley high.
uC Berkeley students enlivened our schools as committed and energetic volunteers,
serving their community through campus programs such as The Music
Connection, SAgE mentors, Cal Teach Science and Math program, and the
Cal Corps Public Service Center. Some Cal students receive academic credit for
their volunteer service through our valued partnership with the School of Education‘s
97/197 Field Studies course. We even had a talented cohort of students
from university of oslo who incorporated volunteerism with BuSd Special Ed
students as part of their semester abroad studies.
People of all ages and backgrounds care enough about education to get
involved here in Berkeley, and BSV responds by finding ways they can meaningfully
support teachers, staff and students. It would be difficult to imagine a day
in the schools without the presence of these terrific volunteers!
“There is nothing more important—
or more gratifying—that I could be doing.”
Retired accounting executive Bob hetler, better known these days as “Teacher Bob,”
has discovered the joy and profound impact that volunteering can have. Four days
a week he works one­on­one or in groups to reinforce math concepts taught by
Thousand oaks 3rd grade teacher Quise Rodriguez. “Bob is absolutely wonderful!
having another adult in the room who is dedicated to children and understands they
all have different needs is vital to my classroom.” A treasured booklet of thank you
letters is a testament to Bob’s lasting impression on these fortunate youngsters.

Restricted Funds
Funds donated to BPEF for general
and earmarked purposes are
directed every year into a variety
of larger programs encompassing
multiple schools. Along with Classroom
grants and the Berkeley School
Volunteers programs, our active
collaborations with donors and staff
on these activities form the third
leg of BPEF’s involvement in many
hundreds of initiatives that make a
difference for students, both inside
and beyond the classroom!
Chancellor’s Grant for
Summer Scholarships
A prestigious Chancellor’s Community
Partnership Fund grant was awarded
to BPEF for a collaboration—with uC’s
Cal Corps Public Service Center, BuSd,
the City of Berkeley, South Berkeley Y
and Berkeley Youth Alternatives—
designed to keep K–5 students from
falling back in their reading fluency
during the summer. The fund provided
scholarships for students to attend
summer programs staffed with Cal
Corps’ BuIld (Berkeley united in
literacy development) tutors, who
worked on literacy skills throughout
the week at day camps. BuSd Superintendent
Bill huyett, shown here,
joined other community and campus
leaders for the camps kick­off and
book distribution in June. We were
proud when The Partnership Fund
awarded a second year of this grant for
upcoming Summer 2011 campers!

Never Too Many Books!
literacy is a strong theme and priority
that runs through the grants BPEF
funds each year—from Big Books for
preschoolers to novels for high
schoolers. For the past five years,
BPEF funds have underwritten the
piloting of a literature­rich curriculum
developed by Columbia Teachers
College Reading and Writing
Project—the TCRWP that K–5
teachers are now buzzing about—
and we continue to support its recent
adoption by BuSd with grants to
build extensive permanent classroom
libraries. Among literacy­related

Teaching a Boost
Science instruction is enhanced both
for students and teachers through
our longstanding partnership with
Bayer healthCare. Their annual contri
bution to BPEF allows us to fund
every 5th grade class in BuSd for a
hands­on workshop with practicing
scientists at lawrence Berkeley
national labs. In addition, these
funds support numerous field trips to
spots of scientific importance in our
region—from tidepools in the South
Bay to oakland’s Chabot Space and
Science Center. Bayer funds also allow
Community Resources for Science to
offer professional development and
in­class volunteers to K–8 teachers
through a districtwide membership
program BPEF supports each year.

Seeds Garden Education
Berkeley’s school gardening and
cooking programs are national
models of hands­on learning across
the curriculum. last year, these
activities caught the eye of Berkeley’s
Whole Foods staff member nick
heustis—shown at left with BPEF
Executive director Molly Fraker and

arranged designation of both a 5%
Community Support day and a Bag
Rebate day to create a BPEF fund to
support garden education. Working
with BuSd’s network for a healthy
California program, we are using these
resources for activities that other
funding excludes, including important
professional development for our
dedicated and talented gardening
instructors.

Music in the Schools Gives Everyone a
Chance to Perform
We are delighted each year that our elementary students can
boast of having the illustrious Berkeley Symphony orchestra
provide back­up at their schools’ music performances! Through our
partnership with the Symphony and BuSd, we support an extensive
year­long exposure to orchestral music and instruments, with BSo
members visiting classrooms and performing alongside K–5 students.
Music in the Schools introduces a level of professional musicianship
that deepens appreciation and raises confidence in our students;
what an exceptional opportunity for aspiring musicians!
Inspiring Green Careers
Planned Gift Spotlights
the Value of Arts in
Public Education
Berkeley Public Education Foundation
was honored to receive a gift in 2009
that will expand opportunities for
arts education in our schools over the
coming decade. A bequest from the
estate of longtime Berkeley resident
louise hamrick is earmarked for new
arts initiatives beyond what school
budgets can provide. After reviewing
arts programming in the district we
concluded that formal drama instruction
was not widely represented or funded.
We know drama can be a confidence
builder and a creative tool for exploring
language arts. With the hamrick
Bequest, we are launching an exciting
partnership with the renowned Berkeley
Repertory Theater to fund a 10­week
drama workshop at every K–5 school
during 2010–11 in which both teachers
and students will learn from a visiting
actor­educator.
When former Berkeley high school psychologist and front desk volunteer herb
Singer passed away in 2007, his daughter Ellen Singer­Vine decided to give back
in a way that honored herb’s deep commitment to the students he served. The
herb Singer green Scholars, a program and fund established in 2008, supports
job skills workshops, spring break internships, and summer job placements for
Berkeley high students in businesses that are committed to ‘green’ practices.

Spring Luncheon May 14, 2010
BPEF’s annual Spring luncheon packed hs lordships once again, as over 450 community members honored our
“leaders in literacy.” Significant gains in reading and writing proficiency are being recorded by Berkeley students,
particularly in the crucial K–5 years. BPEF is proud to have been a steadfast early funder of innovations that are
now widely and effectively adopted in language arts curricula districtwide, contributing to these exciting trends.
To spotlight their leadership role in this vital work, we selected honorees whose work expresses a passion and
belief that fluency in reading, writing and speaking are essential steppingstones to academic success.

For his steadfast belief in the power of storytelling and theatrical performance to
help students creatively express personal and dramatic narratives.
For a passionate commitment to encourage talented and motivated UC students
to support the academic success of Berkeley public school students through
year-round tutoring.
Students participating in Cal’s Corps Berkeley united in literacy development—
or BuIld —provide over 15,000 hours of tutoring and mentoring to over
500 Berkeley youth in our schools and recreation centers.
For his initiative and innovation in developing bi-lingual literacy tools for students,
families and teaching colleagues participating in Berkeley’s two-way immersion
program.
Jabari Anderson is among many BuSd teachers interested in research­based
pedagogy and adaptations of technology to enrich their classrooms.

For his persistent, visionary and collegial efforts to strengthen early language
arts teaching and learning in Berkeley’s K–5 public schools, and for his belief
that every child can become a fluent reader.
A stack of books illustrates Tom Prince’s commitment to a language arts
curriculum that invites constant and engaged reading.
Years of acting experience, a passion for storytelling, and a love of bringing words
to life on stage contribute to Richard’s renown for quality drama instruction and
productions at King Middle School.
A Musical Connection with Cal
It was with great appreciation that we recognized The Music Connection founder
Sandra nakagawa at our May Spring luncheon as she made plans to move on to
graduate school. In just two years her idea for a uC Berkeley student­run music
volunteer program grew from 15 to over 100 volunteer tutors, who fan throughout
BuSd to assist K–12 students with after­school, in­class and private music instruction.
